Abstract:Hard scattered partons are predicted to be well calibrated probes of the hot and dense medium produced in heavy ion collisions. Interactions of these partons with the medium w ill result in modifications of internal jet structure in Au+Au events compared to that observed in the p+p/d+Au reference. Full jet reconstruction is a promising tool to measu re these effects without the significant biases present in measurements with high-$\pT$ hadrons. One of the most significant challenges for jet reconstruction in the heavy ion environment comes from the correct characterization of the background fluctuations. The jet mome ntum irresolution due to background fluctuations has to be understood in order to recover the correct jet spectrum. Recent progress in jet reconstruction methodology is discu ssed, as well as recent measurements from p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=200 \gev$.

Abstract:We present an update to the analysis of fully reconstructed jets in heavy ion collisions by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC. We analyse the response of the anti-$k_{T}$ algorithm in the presence of background, and present a new observable for the measurement of inclusive jet production that is expected to be more robust against background model assumptions than previous jet analyses at RHIC and LHC.

Abstract:We review recent developments related to jet clustering algorithms and jet reconstruction, with particular emphasis on their implications in heavy ion collisions. These developments include fast implementations of sequential recombination algorithms, new IRC safe algorithms, quantitative determination of jet areas and quality measures for jet finding, among many others. We also show how jet reconstruction provides a useful tool to probe the characteristics of the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions, which allows one to distinguish between different models of parton-medium interaction.

Abstract:The study of the hot and dense medium created in heavy-ion collisions via the effect of parton energy loss is one of the major goals of jet and high-\pt\ measurements in these reactions. In particular the modifications of the longitudinal and transverse jet structure. Here the subtraction of the underlying heavy-ion event, as well as a precise knowledge of the background induced fluctuations of the reconstructed jet energy is required. Abstract:We examine the problem of jet reconstruction at heavy-ion colliders using jet-area-based background subtraction tools as provided by FastJet. We use Monte Carlo simulations with and without quenching to study the performance of several jet algorithms, including the option of filtering, under conditions corresponding to RHIC and LHC collisions. We find that most standard algorithms perform well, though the anti-kt and filtered Cambridge/Aachen algorithms have clear advantages in terms of the reconstructed transverse-momentum offset and dispersion.

Abstract:Full jet reconstruction in relativistic heavy ion collisions provides new and unique insights to the physics of parton energy loss. Because of the large underlying event multiplicity in $A+A$ collisions, random and correlated fluctuations in the background can result in the reconstruction of fake jets. These fake jets must be identified and rejected to obtain the purest jet sample possible. A large but reducible fake rate of jets reconstructed using an iterative cone algorithm on HIJING events is observed. The absolute rate of fake jets exceeds the binary-scaled p+p jet rate below 50 GeV and is not negligible until 100 GeV. The variable $\Sigma j_{T}$, the sum of the jet constituent's $E_{T}$ perpendicular to the jet axis, is introduced to identify and reject fake jets at by a factor of 100 making it negligible. This variable is shown to not strongly depend on jet energy profiles modified by energy loss. By studying azimuthal correlations of reconstructed di-jets, the fake jet rate can be evaluated in data.

Abstract:Description of parton interaction with the hot and dense nuclear matter created in heavy-ion collisions at high energies is a complex task, which requires a detailed knowledge of jet production in p+p and d+Au collisions. Measurements in these collision systems are therefore essential to disentangle initial state nuclear effects from cold nuclear matter effects, medium-induced kT broadening and jet quenching. To obtain complete description of the p+p (d+Au) collision it is also important to study particle production in the underlying event. The measured properties of underlying event can be used to tune the QCD based Monte-Carlo models. In this paper some of the recent results on jet and underlying event properties in p+p and d+Au collisions at = 200 GeV measured by the STAR experiment are presented. In particular, the preliminary results on charged and strange particle fragmentation functions in p+p collisions are discussed and confronted with PYTHIA simulations. Next, the measurement of inclusive jet spectrum and di-jet correlations in d+Au collisions is presented and compared with the measurements in p+p collisions to estimate the size of cold nuclear matter effects. Finally, the study of underlying event properties in p+p collisions is shown and compared to PYTHIA simulation.

Abstract:Jets are produced from hard scatterings in the early stages of heavy-ion collisions. It is expected that these high-p$_T$ partons travel through the hot and dense medium before fragmenting. Therefore they are expected to suffer energy loss in the QGP via gluon radiation or elastic collisions along their path. Measurements from full jet reconstruction help in the understanding of energy loss and its effectß on the jet structure and energy profile. A data-driven characterization of the background in Au+Au is needed in order to compare the results to p+p. The large coverage of the STAR detector along with an online trigger also allows for reconstructing di-jets. Suitable selection of trigger jets allows for studying a subset of jets on the recoil side which are biased towards higher energy loss because of a larger, on average, in-medium path length traversed. Trigger jets are also used to study jet-hadron correlations as an independent measurement to assess the effect of energy loss on the recoil side. We present measurements of di-jets and jet-hadron correlations in the presence of reconstructed di-jets in Au+Au and p+p at 200 GeV in the STAR experiment.

Multiplicity Based Background Subtraction for Jets in Heavy Ion Collisions

Abstract:Jet measurements in heavy ion collisions at low jet momentum can provide constraints on the properties of the quark gluon plasma but are overwhelmed by a significant, fluctuating background. We build upon our previous work which demonstrated the ability of the jet multiplicity method to extend jet measurements into the domain of low jet momentum [1, Mengel:2023]. We extend this method to a wide range of jet resolution parameters. We investigate the over-complexity of non-interpretable machine learning used to tackle the problem of jet background subtraction through network optimization. Finally, we show that the resulting shallow neural network is able to learn the underlying relationship between jet multiplicity and background fluctuations, with a lesser complexity, reinforcing the utility of interpretable methods.

Abstract:The precise reconstruction of jet transverse momenta in heavy-ion collisions is a challenging task. A major obstacle is the large number of (mainly) low-$p_{\rm T}$ particles overlaying the jets. Strong region-to-region fluctuations of this background complicate the jet measurement and lead to significant uncertainties. In this paper, a novel approach to correct jet momenta (or energies) for the underlying background in heavy-ion collisions is introduced. The proposed method makes use of common Machine Learning techniques to estimate the jet transverse momentum based on several parameters, including properties of the jet constituents. Using a toy model and HIJING simulations, the performance of the new method is shown to be superior to the established standard area-based background estimator. The application of the new method to data promises the measurement of jets down to extremely low transverse momenta, unprecedented thus far in data on heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:High transverse momentum ($p_T$) particle production is suppressed due to parton (jet) energy loss in the hot dense medium created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Redistribution of energy at low-to-modest $p_T$ has been elusive to measure because of large anisotropic backgrounds. We report a data-driven method for background evaluation and subtraction, exploiting the away-side pseudorapidity gaps, to measure the jetlike correlation shape in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm{NN}}}=200$ GeV with the STAR experiment. The correlation shapes, for trigger particle $p_T>3$ GeV/$c$ and various associated particle $p_T$ ranges within $0.5<p_T<10$ GeV/$c$, are consistent with Gaussians and their widths are found to increase with centrality. The results indicate jet broadening in the medium created in central heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:Exploration of the hot and dense nuclear matter produced in collisions of heavy ions is one of the main goals of modern high energy nuclear physics. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) provides a unique opportunity to map the QCD phase diagram by colliding different nucleus species and varying the energy of collisions. RHIC has already begun the second phase of the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program, which will allow us to cover energy range for gold-gold collisions $$\sqrt {{{s}_{{NN}}}} = 7.7{\kern 1pt} - {\kern 1pt} 27$$ GeV. The Fixed-target Program (FXT) will extend collision energy range available for the analysis down to $$\sqrt {{{s}_{{NN}}}} = 3.0$$ GeV. BES-II along with FXT will dramatically enhance our understanding of the QCD phase diagram in the broad range of baryon chemical potential, $${{\mu }_{{\text{B}}}}$$ , up to 720 MeV. Recent detector upgrades increase STAR’s acceptance both in rapidity and low transverse momentum, and extend its particle identification capabilities. With new detectors STAR can explore phase diagram with even higher precision hopefully reaching both the onset of deconfinement as well as the critical point. In this talk, we present the most recent results and future plans from the STAR experiment.

Abstract:In order to assess the ability of jet observables to constrain the characteristics of the medium produced in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC, we investigate the influence of background subtraction and jet quenching on jet reconstruction, with focus on the dijet asymmetry as currently studied by ATLAS and CMS. Using a toy model, we examine the influence of different background subtraction methods on dijet momentum imbalance and azimuthal distributions. We compare the usual jet-area based background subtraction technique and a variant of the noise-pedestal subtraction method used by CMS. The purpose of this work is to understand what are the differences between the two techniques, given the same event configuration. We analyze the influence of the quenching effect using the Q-PYTHIA Monte Carlo on the previous observables and to what extent Q-PYTHIA is able to reproduce the CMS data for the average missing transverse momentum that seems to indicate the presence of large angle emission of soft particles.

Abstract:In all modern hadronic colliders, jets recieve a large contribution from a soft background: pileup in the case of proton-proton collisions at the LHC, or the underlying event for heavy-ion collisions at RHIC or the LHC. In these proceedings, we present a generic and simple method, based on jet areas, to subtract the contribution of the soft background from the jets. This allows for more precise kinematic reconstruction of jets in dense environments.

Abstract:Interactions of hard partons in the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) created with relativistic heavy ion collisions lead to characteristic modifications of the internal structure of reconstructed jets. A large part of the observed jet sub-structure modifications stem from the QGP's response to energy and momentum deposited by hard partons. Good control over medium response in theoretical calculations is thus instrumental to a quantitative understanding of medium modified (quenched) jets in heavy ion collisions. We present an improved way of handling the medium response in the jet quenching model Jewel and present results for a variety of jet sub-structure observables. The new recoil handling is more versatile and robust than the old scheme, giving a better control over many observables and, in particular, greatly improves the description of the jet mass.

Abstract:A bstract Subtraction of the large background in reconstruction is a key ingredient in jet studies in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Here we address the question to which extent the most commonly used subtraction techniques are able to eliminate the effects of the background on the most commonly discussed observables at present: single inclusive jet distributions, dijet asymmetry and azimuthal distributions. We consider two different background subtraction methods, an area-based one implemented through the FastJet package and a pedestal subtraction method, that resemble the ones used by the experimental collaborations at the LHC. We also analyze different ways of defining the optimal parameters in the second method. We use a toy model that easily allows variations of the background characteristics: average background level and fluctuations and azimuthal structure, but cross-checks are also done with a Monte Carlo simulator. Furthermore, we consider the influence of quenching using Q-PYTHIA on the dijet observables with the different background subtraction methods and, additionally, we examine the missing momentum of particles. The average background level and fluctuations affect both single inclusive spectra and dijet asymmetries, although differently for different subtraction setups. A large azimuthal modulation of the background has a visible effect on the azimuthal dijet distributions. Quenching, as implemented in Q-PYTHIA, substantially affects the di-jet asymmetry but little the azimuthal dijet distributions. Besides, the missing momentum characteristics observed in the experiment are qualitatively reproduced by Q-PYTHIA.

Abstract:Jets from early stages of heavy-ion collisions undergo modified showering in quark-gluon plasma (QGP) relative to vacuum due to jet-medium interactions, which can be measured using observables like differential jet shape and generalized angularities. Differential jet shape ($\rho(\mathbf{R})$) encodes radially differential information about jet broadening and has shown an average migration of charged energy away from the axes of quenched jets from Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. Measurements of generalized angularities in presence of the medium from Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC show harder, or more quark-like jet fragmentation relative to vacuum. Measuring these distributions in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC will help us further characterize jet-medium interactions in a phase-space region complementary to that of the LHC.
