Abstract:Finite decomposition complexity and asymptotic dimension growth are two generalizations of M. Gromov's asymptotic dimension which can be used to prove property A for large classes of finitely generated groups of infinite asymptotic dimension. In this paper, we introduce the notion of decomposition complexity growth, which is a quasi-isometry invariant generalizing both finite decomposition complexity and dimension growth. We show that subexponential decomposition complexity growth implies property A, and is preserved by certain group and metric constructions.

Information Decomposition Diagrams Applied beyond Shannon Entropy: A Generalization of Hu's Theorem

Abstract:In information theory, one major goal is to find useful functions that summarize the amount of information contained in the interaction of several random variables. Specifically, one can ask how the classical Shannon entropy, mutual information, and higher interaction information relate to each other. This is answered by Hu's theorem, which is widely known in the form of information diagrams: it relates shapes in a Venn diagram to information functions, thus establishing a bridge from set theory to information theory. In this work, we view random variables together with the joint operation as a monoid that acts by conditioning on information functions, and entropy as a function satisfying the chain rule of information. This abstract viewpoint allows to prove a generalization of Hu's theorem. It applies to Shannon and Tsallis entropy, (Tsallis) Kullback-Leibler Divergence, cross-entropy, Kolmogorov complexity, submodular information functions, and the generalization error in machine learning. Our result implies for Chaitin's Kolmogorov complexity that the interaction complexities of all degrees are in expectation close to Shannon interaction information. For well-behaved probability distributions on increasing sequence lengths, this shows that the per-bit expected interaction complexity and information asymptotically coincide, thus showing a strong bridge between algorithmic and classical information theory.

One-Way Communication Complexity of Partial XOR Functions

Abstract:Boolean function $F(x,y)$ for $x,y \in \{0,1\}^n$ is an XOR function if $F(x,y)=f(x\oplus y)$ for some function $f$ on $n$ input bits, where $\oplus$ is a bit-wise XOR. XOR functions are relevant in communication complexity, partially for allowing Fourier analytic technique. For total XOR functions it is known that deterministic communication complexity of $F$ is closely related to parity decision tree complexity of $f$. Montanaro and Osbourne (2009) observed that one-sided communication complexity $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F)$ of $F$ is exactly equal to nonadaptive parity decision tree complexity $NADT^{\oplus}(f)$ of $f$. Hatami et al. (2018) showed that unrestricted communication complexity of $F$ is polynomially related to parity decision tree complexity of $f$. We initiate the studies of a similar connection for partial functions. We show that in case of one-sided communication complexity whether these measures are equal, depends on the number of undefined inputs of $f$. On the one hand, if $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F)=t$ and $f$ is undefined on at most $O(\frac{2^{n-t}}{\sqrt{n-t}})$, then $NADT^{\oplus}(f)=t$. On the other hand, for a wide range of values of $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F)$ and $NADT^{\oplus}(f)$ (from constant to $n-2$) we provide partial functions for which $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F) < NADT^{\oplus}(f)$. In particular, we provide a function with an exponential gap between the two measures. Our separation results translate to the case of two-sided communication complexity as well, in particular showing that the result of Hatami et al. (2018) cannot be generalized to partial functions. Previous results for total functions heavily rely on Boolean Fourier analysis and the technique does not translate to partial functions. For the proofs of our results we build a linear algebraic framework instead. Separation results are proved through the reduction to covering codes.

Abstract:For any function f(x, y), its communication complexity is the minimum number of bits needed to be exchanged between two parties holding integers x and y respectively. Invented thirty years ago, communication complexity has been a central research area in theoretical computer science with rich applications to algorithmic problems. In this talk, we give an overview of computational complexity, high-lighting several notable recent results and the diverse mathematical techniques needed for deriving such results.

Abstract:We completely characterise the complexity in the decision tree model of computing composite relations of the form h = g(f^1,...,f^n), where each relation f^i is boolean-valued. Immediate corollaries include a direct sum theorem for decision tree complexity and a tight characterisation of the decision tree complexity of iterated boolean functions.

Abstract:We introduce decomposition complexes of posets, which generalize order complexes. The main advantage of our construction is that decomposition complexes are closed under taking products. Other special instances of this theory include nested set complexes as well as Bergman complexes.

Abstract:Decomposition of functions is a general method frequently used in binary logic circuit synthesis, Data Mining and Machine Learning. Ashenhurst-Curtis (AC) decomposition belongs to one of the best known decomposition methods. However, it is really challenging to find the exact minimum AC decomposition for large functions because it requires many exhaust searches. In the hope that large scale quantum computers will be build in the future, we propose an quantum approach based on Grover algorithm to find the optimal AC decomposition in terms of partition theory. The detailed quantum circuit design was created and simulated using Quipper language. According to the experimental results, it is learnt that the quantum algorithm presented in this paper can decompose Boolean function successfully with almost 100% probability and $ o\left( {\sqrt N } \right) $ iterations.

Abstract:We investigate the properties of a Block Decomposition Method (BDM), which extends the power of a Coding Theorem Method (CTM) that approximates local estimations of algorithmic complexity based on Solomonoff–Levin’s theory of algorithmic probability providing a closer connection to algorithmic complexity than previous attempts based on statistical regularities such as popular lossless compression schemes. The strategy behind BDM is to find small computer programs that produce the components of a larger, decomposed object. The set of short computer programs can then be artfully arranged in sequence so as to produce the original object. We show that the method provides efficient estimations of algorithmic complexity but that it performs like Shannon entropy when it loses accuracy. We estimate errors and study the behaviour of BDM for different boundary conditions, all of which are compared and assessed in detail. The measure may be adapted for use with more multi-dimensional objects than strings, objects such as arrays and tensors. To test the measure we demonstrate the power of CTM on low algorithmic-randomness objects that are assigned maximal entropy (e.g., π ) but whose numerical approximations are closer to the theoretical low algorithmic-randomness expectation. We also test the measure on larger objects including dual, isomorphic and cospectral graphs for which we know that algorithmic randomness is low. We also release implementations of the methods in most major programming languages—Wolfram Language (Mathematica), Matlab, R, Perl, Python, Pascal, C++, and Haskell—and an online algorithmic complexity calculator.

Abstract:Orthogonal direct-sum decompositions of finite games into potential, harmonic and nonstrategic components exist in the literature. In this paper we study the issue of decomposing games that are strategically equivalent from a game-theoretical point of view, for instance games obtained via transformations such as duplications of strategies or positive affine mappings of the payoffs. We show the need to define classes of decompositions to achieve commutativity of game transformations and decompositions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the ideas of composition and decomposition in the context of vector spaces, graphs and matroids. For vector spaces $\V_{AB},$ treated as collection of row vectors, with specified column set $A\uplus B,$ we define $\V_{SP}\lrarv \V_{PQ}, S\cap Q= \emptyset, $ to be the collection of all vectors $(f_S,f_Q)$ such that $(f_S,f_P)\in \V_{SP}, (f_P,f_Q)\in \V_{PQ}$. An analogous operation $\G_{SP}\lrarg \G_{PQ}\equivd \G_{PQ}$ can be defined in relation to graphs $\G_{SP}, \G_{PQ},$ on edge sets $S\uplus P, P\uplus Q,$ respectively in terms of an overlapping subgraph $\G_P$ which gets deleted in the right side graph (see for instance the notion of $k-sum$ \cite{oxley}). For matroids we define the `linking' $\M_{SP}\lrarm \M_{PQ} \equivd (\M_{SP}\vee \M_{PQ})\times (S\uplus Q)$, denoting the contraction operation by '$\times$'. In each case, we examine how to minimize the size of the `overlap' set $P,$ without affecting the right side entity. In the case of vector spaces, there is a polynomial time algorithm for achieving the minimum, which we present. Similar ideas work for graphs and for matroids under appropriate conditions. Next we consider the problem of decomposition. Here, in the case of vector spaces, the problem is to decompose $\V_{SQ}$ as $\V_{SP}\lrarv \V_{PQ},$ with minimum size $P.$ We give a polynomial time algorithm for this purpose. In the case of graphs and matroids we give a solution to this problem under certain restrictions.

Abstract:A decomposition space (also called 2-Segal space) is a simplicial object satisfying an exactness condition weaker than the Segal condition: just as the Segal condition expresses composition, the new condition expresses decomposition. It is a general framework for incidence (co)algebras. In this contribution, after establishing a formula for the section coefficients, we survey a large supply of examples, emphasising the notion's firm roots in classical combinatorics. The first batch of examples, similar to binomial posets, serves to illustrate 2 key points: (1) the incidence algebra in question is realised directly from a decomposition space, without a reduction step, and reductions are often given by CULF functors; (2) at the objective level, the convolution algebra is a monoidal structure of species. We encounter the usual Cauchy product of species, the shuffle product of L-species, the Dirichlet product of arithmetic species, the Joyal-Street external product of q-species and the Morrison `Cauchy' product of q-species. In each case a power series representation results from taking cardinality. The external product of q-species exemplifies the fact that Waldhausen's S-construction on an abelian category is a decomposition space, yielding Hall algebras. The next class of examples includes Schmitt's chromatic Hopf algebra, the Faà di Bruno bialgebra, the Butcher-Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of trees and variations from operad theory. Similar structures on posets and directed graphs exemplify a general construction of decomposition spaces from directed restriction species. An appetiser on decomposition spaces of symmetric functions is included. We finish by computing the Möbius function in a few cases, and commenting on certain cancellations that occur in the process of taking cardinality, substantiating that these cancellations are not possible at the objective level.

Abstract:We combine aspects of the notions of finite decomposition complexity and asymptotic property C into a notion that we call finite APC-decomposition complexity. Any space with finite decomposition complexity has finite APC-decomposition complexity and any space with asymptotic property C has finite APC-decomposition complexity. Moreover, finite APC-decomposition complexity implies property A for metric spaces. We also show that finite APC-decomposition complexity is preserved by direct products of groups and spaces, amalgamated products of groups, and group extensions, among other constructions.

Abstract:Finite decomposition complexity (FDC) is a large scale property of a metric space. It generalizes finite asymptotic dimension and applies to a wide class of groups. To make the property quantitative, a countable ordinal “the complexity” can be defined for a metric space with FDC. In this paper we prove that the subgroup Z≀Z of Thompsonʼs group F belongs to Dω exactly, where ω is the smallest infinite ordinal number and show that F equipped with the word-metric with respect to the infinite generating set {x0,x1,…,xn,…} does not have finite decomposition complexity.
On Some Decompositions of r-Disjunctive Languages

Abstract:Some kinds of decompositions of r-disjunctive languages on an arbitrary alphabet will be investigated. We will show that an f-disjunctive (t-disjunctive) language can be divided into two parts and either one part of them is an f-disjunctive (t-disjunctive) language or both parts are r-disjunctive but not f-disjunctive (t-disjunctive) languages. Finally, a relevant result of H. J. Shyr and S. S. Yu concerning the disjunctive languages will be improved.
Effective cylindrical cell decompositions for restricted sub-Pfaffian sets

Abstract:The o-minimal structure generated by the restricted Pfaffian functions, known as restricted sub-Pfaffian sets, admits a natural measure of complexity in terms of a format $\mathcal{F}$, recording information like the number of variables and quantifiers involved in the definition of the set, and a degree $D$ recording the degrees of the equations involved. Khovanskii and later Gabrielov and Vorobjov have established many effective estimates for the geometric complexity of sub-Pfaffian sets in terms of these parameters. It is often important in applications that these estimates are polynomial in $D$. Despite much research done in this area, it is still not known whether cell decomposition, the foundational operation of o-minimal geometry, preserves polynomial dependence on $D$. We slightly modify the usual notions of format and degree and prove that with these revised notions this does in fact hold. As one consequence we also obtain the first polynomial (in $D$) upper bounds for the sum of Betti numbers of sets defined using quantified formulas in the restricted sub-Pfaffian structure.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce and study various kinds of decomposition complexity. First, we give a characterization of residually finite groups having finite decomposition complexity (FDC). Secondly, we introduce equi-variant straight FDC (sFDC), and prove that a group having equi-variant sFDC if and only if its box space having sFDC. Finally, we show that elementary amenable groups have equi-variant sFDC by introducing something called stable FDC.

Abstract:In this paper, we test and extend a proposal of Gu, Pei, and Zhang for an application of decomposition to three-dimensional theories with one-form symmetries and to quantum K theory. The theories themselves do not decompose, but, OPEs of parallel one-dimensional objects (such as Wilson lines) and dimensional reductions to two dimensions do decompose, sometimes in two independent ways. We apply this to extend conjectures for quantum K theory rings of gerbes (realized by three-dimensional gauge theories with one-form symmetries) via both orbifold partition functions and gauged linear sigma models.

Abstract:Markov chains have been widely employed as a fundamental model in the studies of probabilistic and stochastic communicating and concurrent systems. It is well-understood that decomposition techniques play a key role in reachability analysis and model-checking of Markov chains. (Discrete-time) quantum Markov chains have been introduced as a model of quantum communicating systems [1] and also a semantic model of quantum programs [2]. The BSCC (Bottom Strongly Connected Component) and stationary coherence decompositions of quantum Markov chains were introduced in [3, 4, 5]. This paper presents a new decomposition technique, namely periodic decomposition, for quantum Markov chains. We further establish a limit theorem for them. As an application, an algorithm to find a maximum dimensional noiseless subsystem of a quantum communicating system is given using decomposition techniques of quantum Markov chains.
