Abstract:We consider random multiplicative functions taking the values $\pm 1$. Using Stein's method for normal approximation, we prove a central limit theorem for the sum of such multiplicative functions in appropriate short intervals.

Abstract: Let $(X_i, i\in J)$ be a family of locally dependent non-negative integer-valued random variables, and consider the sum $W=\sum_{i\in J}X_i$. We establish general error upper bounds for $d_{TV}(W, M)$ using the three-parametric perturbation form of Stein operator, where the target variable $M$ is either the mixture of Poisson distribution and binomial or negative binomial distribution, and the three parameters are delicately determined by guaranteeing $M$ and $W$ are identical in the first three factorial cumulants. As applications, we discuss in detail the classic local dependence structure examples like $(1, 1)$-runs, ($k_{1},k_{2}$)-runs and $k$-runs, and attain $O(|J|^{-1})$ error bounds under some special cases by exactly figuring out the smoothness of the conditional distributions of $W$ upon partial sums. The obtained result is to some extent a significant improvement of Pek\"{o}z [Bernoulli, 19 (2013)] and Upadhye, et al. [Bernoulli, 23 (2017)].

Abstract:A Steinhaus random multiplicative function $f$ is a completely multiplicative function obtained by setting its values on primes $f(p)$ to be independent random variables distributed uniformly on the unit circle. Recent work of Harper shows that $\sum_{n\le N} f(n)$ exhibits ``more than square-root cancellation," and in particular $\frac 1{\sqrt{N}} \sum_{n\le N} f(n)$ does not have a (complex) Gaussian distribution. This paper studies $\sum_{n\in {\mathcal A}} f(n)$, where ${\mathcal A}$ is a subset of the integers in $[1,N]$, and produces several new examples of sets ${\mathcal A}$ where a central limit theorem can be established. We also consider more general sums such as $\sum_{n\le N} f(n) e^{2\pi i n\theta}$, where we show that a central limit theorem holds for any irrational $\theta$ that does not have extremely good Diophantine approximations.

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ be a Steinhaus or a Rademacher random multiplicative function. For a wide class of multiplicative functions $f$ we show that the sum $\sum_{n \le x}\alpha(n) f(n)$, normalised to have mean square $1$, has a non-Gaussian limiting distribution. More precisely, we establish a generalised central limit theorem with random variance determined by the total mass of a random measure associated with $\alpha f$. Our result applies to $d_z$, the $z$-th divisor function, as long as $z$ is strictly between $0$ and $\tfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}$. Other examples of admissible $f$-s include any multiplicative indicator function with the property that $f(p)=1$ holds for a set of primes of density strictly between $0$ and $\tfrac{1}{2}$.

Abstract:In analytic number theory, several results make use of information regarding the prime values of a multiplicative function in order to extract information about its averages. Examples of such results include Wirsing's theorem and the Landau-Selberg-Delange method. In this paper, we are interested in the opposite direction. In particular, we prove that when $f$ is a suitable divisor-bounded multiplicative function with small partial sums, then $f(p)\approx-p^{i\gamma_1}-\ldots-p^{i\gamma_m}$ on average, where the $\gamma_j$'s are the imaginary parts of the zeros of the Dirichet series of $f$ on the line $\Re(s)=1$. This extends a result of Koukoulopoulos and Soundararajan and it builds upon ideas coming from previous work of Koukoulopoulos for the case where $|f|\leqslant 1$.

Abstract:We study higher uniformity properties of the Möbius function $\mu$, the von Mangoldt function $\Lambda$, and the divisor functions $d_k$ on short intervals $(X,X+H]$ with $X^{\theta+\varepsilon} \leq H \leq X^{1-\varepsilon}$ for a fixed constant $0 \leq \theta < 1$ and any $\varepsilon>0$. More precisely, letting $\Lambda^\sharp$ and $d_k^\sharp$ be suitable approximants of $\Lambda$ and $d_k$ and $\mu^\sharp = 0$, we show for instance that, for any nilsequence $F(g(n)\Gamma)$, we have \[ \sum_{X < n \leq X+H} (f(n)-f^\sharp(n)) F(g(n) \Gamma) \ll H \log^{-A} X \] when $\theta = 5/8$ and $f \in \{\Lambda, \mu, d_k\}$ or $\theta = 1/3$ and $f = d_2$. As a consequence, we show that the short interval Gowers norms $\|f-f^\sharp\|_{U^s(X,X+H]}$ are also asymptotically small for any fixed $s$ for these choices of $f,\theta$. As applications, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions to linear equations in primes in short intervals, and show that multiple ergodic averages along primes in short intervals converge in $L^2$. Our innovations include the use of multi-parameter nilsequence equidistribution theorems to control type $II$ sums, and an elementary decomposition of the neighbourhood of a hyperbola into arithmetic progressions to control type $I_2$ sums.

Kac's Central Limit Theorem by Stein's Method

Abstract:In $1946$, Mark Kac proved a Central Limit type theorem for a sequence of random variables that were not independent. The random variables under consideration were obtained from the angle-doubling map. The idea behind Kac's proof was to show that although the random variables under consideration were not independent, they were what he calls \textit{statistically independent} (in modern terminology, this concept is called long range independence). The final conclusion of his paper was that the sample averages of the random variables, suitably normalized converges to the standard normal distribution. We describe a new proof of Mark Kac's result by applying Stein's method and show that the normalized sample averages converge to the standard normal distribution in the Wasserstein metric, which is stronger than the convergence in distribution.

Abstract:We examine the conditions under which the sum of random multiplicative functions in short intervals, given by $\sum_{x<n \leqslant x+y} f(n)$, exhibits the phenomenon of \textit{better than square-root cancellation}. We establish that the point at which the square-root cancellation diminishes significantly is approximately when the ratio $\log\big(\frac{x}{y}\big)$ is around $\sqrt{\log\log x}$. By modeling characters by random multiplicative functions, we give a sharp bound of $\frac{1}{r-1}\sum_{\chi \!\!\!\mod r} \big|\sum_{x<n\leqslant x+y}\chi(n)\big|$, where $r$ is a large prime and $x+y\leqslant r $. This extends the result of Harper \cite{Harper_charac}.

Let S n = X 1+⋯+X n and ${}^{{{\left( r \right)}}}S_{n} = S_{n} - {\left( {X^{{{\left( 1 \right)}}}_{n} + \cdots + X^{{{\left( r \right)}}}_{n} } \right)}.$Sufficient and necessary conditions for (r) S n approximating to sums of independent normal random variables are obtained. Via approximation results, the convergence rates of the strong law of large numbers for (r) S n are studied.

Abstract:Assuming the generalized Lindelöf hypothesis (GLH), a weak generalized Ramanujan conjecture and a Rankin--Selberg type partial sum estimate, we show that the sum of coefficients of a general $L$-function in short intervals of appropriate length has a Gaussian limiting distribution. The novelty lies in the degree aspect under GLH. In particular, this generalizes Hughes--Rudnick's result on lattice point counts in thin annuli.

This in turn allows us to establish the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture and the divisor correlation conjecture with a short average over one variable. Our main new ingredients are type $II$ estimates obtained by developing a "contagion lemma" for nilsequences and then using this to "scale up" an approximate functional equation for the nilsequence to a larger scale. This extends an approach developed by Walsh for Fourier uniformity.

Abstract:Granville-Soundararajan, Harper-Nikeghbali-Radziwill, and Heap-Lindqvist independently established an asymptotic for the even natural moments of partial sums of random multiplicative functions defined over integers. Building on these works, we study the even natural moments of partial sums of Steinhaus random multiplicative functions defined over function fields. Using a combination of analytic arguments and combinatorial arguments, we obtain asymptotic expressions for all the even natural moments in the large field limit and large degree limit, as well as an exact expression for the fourth moment.

Abstract:We present a de Bruijn type approximation for quantifying the content of m smooth numbers, derived from samples obtained through a probability measure over the set of integers less than or equal to n, with point mass function at k inversely proportional to k. Our analysis is based on a stochastic representation of the measure of interest, utilizing weighted independent geometric random variables. This representation is analyzed through the lens of Stein method for the Dickman distribution. A pivotal element of our arguments relies on precise estimations concerning the regularity properties of the solution to the Dickman Stein equation for heaviside functions, recently developed by Bhattacharjee and Schulte. Remarkably, our arguments remain mostly in the realm of probability theory, with Mertens first and third theorems standing as the only number theory estimations required.
