Abstract:We define the wonderful compactification of an arrangement of subvarieties. Given a complex nonsingular algebraic variety $Y$ and certain collection $\mathcal{G}$ of subvarieties of $Y$, the wonderful compactification $Y_\mathcal{G}$ can be constructed by a sequence of blow-ups of $Y$ along the subvarieties of the arrangement. This generalizes the Fulton-MacPherson configuration spaces and the wonderful models given by De Concini and Procesi. We give a condition on the order of blow-ups in the construction of $Y_\mathcal{G}$ such that each blow-up is along a nonsingular center.

Abstract:We define a natural compactification of an arrangement complement in a ball quotient. We show that when this complement has a moduli space interpretation, then this compactification is often one that appears naturally by means of geometric invariant theory. We illustrate this with the moduli spaces of smooth quartic curves and rational elliptic surfaces.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over $\mathbb C$, and let $M$ be the wonderful compactification of a symmetric space $G/H$. Take a $\widetilde G$--equivariant principal $R$--bundle $E$ on $M$, where $R$ is a complex reductive algebraic group and $\widetilde G$ is the universal cover of $G$. If the action of the isotropy group $\widetilde H$ on the fiber of $E$ at the identity coset is irreducible, then we prove that $E$ is polystable with respect to any polarization on $M$. Further, for wonderful compactification of the quotient of $\text{PSL}(n,{\mathbb C})$, $n\,\neq\, 4$ (respectively, $\text{PSL}(2n,{\mathbb C})$, $n \geq 2$) by the normalizer of the projective orthogonal group (respectively, the projective symplectic group), we prove that the tangent bundle is stable with respect to any polarization on the wonderful compactification.

Abstract:All arithmetic non-compact ball quotients by Deligne-Mostow's unitary monodromy group arise as sub-ball quotients of either of two spaces called ancestral cases, corresponding to Gaussian or Eisenstein Hermitian forms respectively. In our previous paper, we investigated the compactifications of the Gaussian Deligne-Mostow variety. Here we work on the remaining case, namely the ring of Eisenstein integers, which is related to the moduli space of unordered 12 points on $\mathbb P^1$. In particular, we show that Kirwan's partial resolution of the moduli space is not a semi-toroidal compactification and Deligne-Mostow's period map does not lift to the unique toroidal compactification. We give two interpretations of these phenomena in terms of the log minimal model program and automorphic forms. As an application, we prove that the above two compactifications are not (stacky) derived equivalent, as the $DK$-conjecture predicts. Furthermore, we construct an automorphic form on the moduli space of non-hyperelliptic curves of genus 4, which is isogenous to the Eisenstein Deligne-Mostow variety, giving another intrinsic proof, independent of lattice embeddings, of a result by Casalaina-Martin, Jensen and Laza.

Wonderful compactifications of Bruhat-Tits buildings in the non-split case

Abstract:Given an adjoint semisimple group $G$ over a local field $k$, we prove that the maximal Satake-Berkovich compactification of the Bruhat-Tits building of $G$ can be identified with the one obtained by embedding the building into the Berkovich analytification of the wonderful compactification of $G$, extending previous results of Rémy, Thuillier and Werner. In the process, we use the characterisation of the wonderful compactification in terms of Hilbert schemes given by Brion to extend the definition of the wonderful compactification to the case of a non-necessarily split adjoint semisimple group over an arbitrary field and investigate some of its properties pertaining to rational points on the boundary. Lastly, given a finite possibly ramified Galois extension $k'/k$, we take a look at the action of the Galois group on the maximal compactification of the building of $G$ over $k'$ and check that the Galois-fixed points are precisely the limits of sequences of fixed points in the building over $k'$, though they may not lie in the Satake-Berkovich compactification of $G$ over $k$.

Abstract:A classical branched cover is an open surjection of compact Hausdorff spaces with uniformly bounded finite fibers and analogously, a quantum branched cover is a unital $C^*$ embedding admitting a finite-index expectation. We show that whenever a compact Hausdorff space $Z$ contains a one-point compactification of an uncountable set, the incidence correspondence attached to the space of cardinality-$(\le n)$ subsets of $Z$ (for $n\ge 3$) is a classical branched cover that does not dualize to a quantum one. In particular, when $Z$ is dyadic, the resulting $C^*$ embeddings are quantum branched covers precisely when $Z$ is also metrizable. This provides a partial converse to an earlier result of the author's (to the effect that continuous, unital, subhomogeneous $C^*$ bundles over compact metrizable spaces are quantum branched) and settles negatively a question of Blanchard-Gogić. There are also some positive results identifying classes of compact Hausdorff spaces (e.g. extremally disconnected or orderable) with the property that all (continuous, unital) $C^*$ bundles based thereon are quantum branched.

Abstract:We define a new class of completions of locally symmetric varieties of type IV which interpolates between the Baily-Borel compactification and Mumford's toric compactifications. An arithmetic arrangement in a locally symmetric variety of type IV determines such a completion canonically. This completion admits a natural contraction that leaves the complement of the arrangement untouched. The resulting completion of the arrangement complement is very much like a Baily-Borel compactification: it is the proj of an algebra of meromorphic automorphic forms. When that complement has a moduli space interpretation, then what we get is often a compactification obtained by means of geometric invariant theory. We illustrate this with several examples: moduli spaces of polarized $K3$ and Enriques surfaces and the semi-universal deformation of a triangle singularity. We also discuss the question when a type IV arrangement is definable by an automorphic form.

Abstract:We introduce and study smooth compactifications of the moduli space of n labeled points with weights in projective space, which have normal crossings boundary and are defined as GIT quotients of the weighted Fulton-MacPherson compactification. We show that the GIT quotient of a wonderful compactification is also a wonderful compactification under certain hypotheses. We also study a weighted version of the configuration spaces parametrizing n points in affine space up to translation and homothety. In dimension one, the above compactifications are isomorphic to Hassett's moduli space of rational weighted stable curves.

Abstract:The moduli space of complex cubic surfaces has three different, but isomorphic, compact realizations: as a GIT quotient, as a Baily--Borel compactification of a ball quotient, and as a compactified $K$-moduli space. From all three perspectives, there is a unique boundary point corresponding to non-stable surfaces. From the GIT point of view, to deal with this point, it is natural to consider the Kirwan blowup, while from the ball quotient point of view it is natural to consider the toroidal compactification. Both these spaces have the same cohomology and and it is therefore natural to ask whether they are isomorphic. Here we show that this is in fact not the case. Indeed, we show the more refined statement that both spaces are equivalent in the Grothendieck ring, but not $K$-equivalent. Along the way, we establish a number of results and techniques for dealing with singularities and canonical classes of Kirwan blowups and toroidal compactifications of ball quotients.

Abstract:We introduce a categorical analogue of Saito’s notion of primitive forms. For the category $\textsf{MF}(\frac{1}{n+1}x^{n+1})$ of matrix factorizations of $\frac{1}{n+1}x^{n+1}$, we prove that there exists a unique, up to non-zero constant, categorical primitive form. The corresponding genus zero categorical Gromov–Witten invariants of $\textsf{MF}(\frac{1}{n+1}x^{n+1})$ are shown to match with the invariants defined through unfolding of singularities of $\frac{1}{n+1}x^{n+1}$.

Abstract:We prove that the moduli space of rational curves with cyclic action, constructed in our previous work, is realizable as a wonderful compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a product of projective spaces. By proving a general result on such wonderful compactifications, we conclude that this moduli space is Chow-equivalent to an explicit toric variety (whose fan can be understood as a tropical version of the moduli space), from which a computation of its Chow ring follows.

Cohomologies of tautological bundles of matroids

Abstract:Tautological bundles of realizations of matroids were introduced in [BEST23] as a unifying geometric model for studying matroids. We compute the cohomologies of exterior and symmetric powers of these vector bundles, and show that they depend only on the matroid of the realization. As an application, we show that the log canonical bundle of a wonderful compactification of a hyperplane arrangement complement, in particular the moduli space of pointed rational curves, has vanishing higher cohomologies.

Abstract:A number of compactifications familiar in complex-analytic geometry, in particular, the Baily-Borel compactification and its toroidal variants, as well as the Deligne-Mumford compactifications, can be covered by open subsets whose nonempty intersections are Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. We exploit this fact to describe the (rational) homotopy type of these spaces and the natural maps between them in terms of the simplicial sets attached to certain categories. We thus generalize an old result of Charney-Lee on the Baily-Borel compactification of A_g and recover (and rephrase) a more recent one of Ebert-Giansiracusa on the Deligne-Mumford compactifications. We also describe an extension of the period map for Riemann surfaces (going from the Deligne-Mumford compactification to the Baily-Borel compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized varieties) in these terms.

Abstract:We sketch recent interactions between model theory and a roughly 150-year old study of analytic functions involving complex analysis, algebraic topology, and number theory, centered in canonicity of universal covers. Towards this goal we discuss in a systematic and unified way several examples indicating the main ideas of the proofs and the necessary changes in method for different situations: exponential covers, modular and Shimura curves, Shimura and abelian varieties, and coherent families of smooth covers.

Abstract:We study the moduli space of $G_2$-instantons on (projectively) flat bundles over torsion-free $G_2$-orbifolds. We prove that the moduli space is compact and smooth at the irreducible locus after adding small and generic holonomy perturbations. Consequently, we define an integer-valued invariant that is invariant under $C^0$-deformation of torsion-free $G_2$-structures. We compute this invariant for some orbifolds that arise in Joyce's construction of compact $G_2$-manifolds

Abstract:It is well-known that gauging a finite 0-form symmetry in a quantum field theory leads to a dual symmetry generated by topological Wilson line defects. These are described by the representations of the 0-form symmetry group which form a 1-category. We argue that for a d-dimensional quantum field theory the full set of dual symmetries one obtains is in fact much larger and is described by a (d-1)-category, which is formed out of lower-dimensional topological quantum field theories with the same 0-form symmetry. We study in detail a 2-categorical piece of this (d-1)-category described by 2d topological quantum field theories with 0-form symmetry. We further show that the objects of this 2-category are the recently discussed 2d condensation defects constructed from higher-gauging of Wilson lines. Similarly, dual symmetries obtained by gauging any higher-form or higher-group symmetry also form a (d-1)-category formed out of lower-dimensional topological quantum field theories with that higher-form or higher-group symmetry. A particularly interesting case is that of the 2-category of dual symmetries associated to gauging of finite 2-group symmetries, as it describes non-invertible symmetries arising from gauging 0-form symmetries that act on (d-3)-form symmetries. Such non-invertible symmetries were studied recently in the literature via other methods, and our results not only agree with previous results, but our approach also provides a much simpler way of computing various properties of these non-invertible symmetries. We describe how our results can be applied to compute non-invertible symmetries of various classes of gauge theories with continuous disconnected gauge groups in various spacetime dimensions. We also discuss the 2-category formed by 2d condensation defects in any arbitrary quantum field theory.

Abstract:We study the string topology of a closed oriented Riemannian manifold M. We describe a compact moduli space of diagrams, and show how the cellular chain complex of this space gives algebraic operations on the singular chains of the free loop space LM of M. These operations are well-defined on the homology of a quotient of this moduli space, which has the homotopy type of a compactification of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. In particular, our action of the 0-dimensional homology of the quotient space on the homology of the free loop space of M recovers the Cohen-Godin positive boundary TQFT.

The partial compactification of the universal centralizer

Abstract:The universal centralizer of a semisimple algebraic group is the family of centralizers of regular elements, parametrized by their conjugacy classes. When the group is of adjoint type, we construct a smooth, log-symplectic fiberwise compactification of the universal centralizer by taking the closure of each fiber in the wonderful compactification. We use the geometry of the wonderful compactification to give an explicit description of its symplectic leaves. We also show that the compactified centralizer fibers are isomorphic to certain Hessenberg varieties -- we apply this connection to compute the singular cohomology of the partial compactification, and to study the geometry of the corresponding universal Hessenberg family.

Abstract:Abstract We construct a sequence of explicit blow-ups and blow-downs on an irreducible compact Hermitian symmetric spaces $X$ which transforms it into a projective space of the same dimension. Moreover, this resolves a birational map given by Landsberg and Manivel. Centers of the blow-ups for $X$ are constructed by loci of chains of minimal rational curves and centers of the blow-ups for the projective space are constructed from the variety of minimal rational tangents of $X$ and its higher secant varieties. The result was known in the special case where $X$ is of rank 2 and could be found in Zak’s monograph “Tangents and secants of algebraic varieties.”
