Abstract:We have calculated the half-lives of $^{56}$Ni$^{\ast}$ within PCM for clusters $\ge ^{16}$O. The cluster decay half-lives studied with respect to radius formula due to Royer (R$_{Royer}$) shows that the half-lives lie within $\pm$7%, excluding Bass radius formula where these lie within $\pm$10%.

Abstract:The cluster dynamics of radioactive nuclei decaying to neighbouring daughter nuclei of the double magic $^{132}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb is investigated using the relativistic mean-field (RMF) approach with NL3$^*$ parameter set within the preformed cluster-decay model (PCM). The novel feature of the present study is the application of the newly derived preformation formula, laying the groundwork for accessing the break-up of the Q-value: preformation energy, cluster emission energy and the recoil energy of the daughters formed. The energy associated with cluster preformation is theoretically quantified for the first time. This treatment underscores the shell effect, pairing correlation as well as the blocking of particular orbitals by unpaired nucleons. To ascertain the applicability of the new formula, the PCM based calculations are carried out with nuclear potential obtained using the phenomenological M3Y and microscopic RMF-based R3Y nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials along with corresponding densities. We found a marginal variation that can be attributed to the difference in their barrier properties, however, the predictions for the case of both M3Y and R3Y potentials are found to agree well with the experimental half-lives. Although none of the considered reaction systems yields a double magic daughter nucleus, we found that the kinematics of their cluster emissions is governed by their proximity to the shell closure. The deduced systematic of the recoil energy in cluster decays can provide valuable insight for the synthesis of elements in superheavy mass region in the future.

Theoretical investigation of heavy cluster decay from Z=118 and 120 isotopes: A search for an empirical formula in superheavy region

Abstract:Various decay modes in superheavy nuclei have been of significant interest among which cluster radioactivity has recently gained sizable attention. The {\alpha}-decay being a predominant decay mode in the superheavy region, the accurate determination of cluster decay half-lives is also crucial in this region as it has tremendous potential to be explored as one of the major decay channels. The usability of the Royer analytical formula [Nuclear Physics A 683 (2001) 182], which is based on the asymmetric fission model, has been investigated for the cluster and {\alpha} decay in superheavy region, by comparing it with several other (semi)empirical/analytical formulas. After fitting the formula on around 100 cluster-decay data and around 423 {\alpha}-decay data, the refitted Royer formula (RRF) is found to be very robust which is able to estimate the cluster decay and {\alpha}-decay half-lives with good accuracy. In fact, a comparison of the half-lives of both the decay modes using the same formula points towards a substantial chance of heavy cluster (Kr and Sr) decay from various isotopes of Z=118 and 120. Hence, the formula proposed in this study works fairly well for the estimation of cluster decay half-lives in superheavy regions where most empirical formulas fail to match with the half-lives from the various established theories.

Systematic Calculations on Cluster Radioactivity Half-Lives

Abstract:Half-lives of cluster radioactivity have been systematically investigated using the effective liquid drop description with the varying mass asymmetry shape and effective inertial coefficient. A new nuclear radius formula including the isospin-dependent term is presented instead of the old empirical radius formula R-p = 1.20A(p)(1/3). The calculated half-lives with the new nuclear radius formula are in good agreement with the available experimental data and closer to the experimental values than the ones with the old nuclear radius formula. We made some predictions on the new possible island of cluster radioactivity around the double-magic daughter nucleus Sn-100. The calculated results show that the alpha-like-nuclei clusters are the most probable cases for measurements in this region. We also try to find cluster radioactivities around another double-magic daughter nucleus Sn-132, but there is no clear evidence for the existence of cluster radioactivity. The predictions on the half-lives of cluster radioactivity around the daughter nucleus Pb-208 are made as well. These results may be useful for future experiments.
Half-lives and Cluster Preformation Factors for Various Cluster Emissions in Trans-Lead Nuclei

Abstract:The generalized density-dependent cluster model (GDDCM) is extended to study cluster radioactivity in even-even and odd-Anuclei decaying to the doublymagic nucleus Pb-208 or its neighboring nuclei. Themicroscopic cluster-daughter potential is numerically constructed in the double-folding model with M3Y nucleon-nucleon interactions plus proton-proton Coulomb interactions. Instead of the WKB barrier penetration probability, the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation with outgoing Coulomb wave boundary conditions is presented. The cluster preformation factor is well taken into account based on some available experimental cases. The calculated half-lives are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. This indicates that a unified description of a decay and cluster radioactivity has been achieved by the GDDCM. Predictions of cluster emission half-lives are made for promising emitters, which may guide future experiments.

Abstract:We deduce the rms nuclear charge radii for ground states of light and medium-mass nuclei from experimental data of cluster radioactivity and proton emission in a unified framework. On the basis of the density-dependent cluster model, the calculated decay half-lives are obtained within the modified two-potential approach. The charge distribution of emitted clusters in the cluster decay and that of daughter nuclei in the proton emission are determined to correspondingly reproduce the experimental half-lives within the folding model. The obtained charge distribution is then employed to give the rms charge radius of the studied nuclei. Satisfactory agreement between theory and experiment is achieved for available experimental data, and the present results are found to be consistent with theoretical estimations. This study is expected to be helpful in the future detection of nuclear sizes, especially for these exotic nuclei near the proton dripline.

Abstract:We investigate the recently discovered a decays of heavy and superheavy nuclei with A = 160-294 by the cluster model of a decay. This covers the short-lifetime a decays of the nuclei near the proton-drip line, the decays of superheavy elements with Z = 106-118, and the long-lifetime decay of the naturally occurring nuclide W-180 [Danevich et al., Phys. Rev. C 67, 014310 (2003)]. It is found that the cluster model can well reproduce the new data of half-lives of these nuclei. For superheavy nuclei the cluster model, without introducing any additional adjustments, can reasonably reproduce the half-lives of many nuclei although substantial deviations between experimental half-lives and theoretical ones exist in a few cases in which there may be large errors in the experimental data for a single event. Some new a emitters in naturally occurring nuclides are predicted. Experiments to search the alpha radioactivity of Hf-176,Hf-178 and of Sm-149 are strongly recommended.
Α-Decay Half-Lives of Ground and Isomeric States of Exotic Nuclei Around Closed Shells

Abstract:We investigate the alpha-decay half-lives of ground and isomeric states of exotic nuclei around the shell closures Z=82 and N=82 by the density-dependent cluster model (DDCM). Our calculations concentrate on four kinds of favored alpha transitions: (1) ground state to ground state, (2) ground state to isomeric state, (3) isomeric state to ground state, and (4) isomeric state to isomeric state. The calculated alpha-decay half-lives of both ground and isomeric states are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Useful predictions on the partial half-lives of several alpha emitters are made for future experiments.

Abstract:The alpha and cluster decay properties of the $132-138$^Nd, $144-158$^Gd, $176-196$^Hg and $192-198$^Pb even-even isotopes in the two mass regions A = 130-158 and A = 180-198 are analysed using the Coulomb and Proximity Potential Model. On examining the clusters at corresponding points in the cold valleys (points with same A_2) of the various isotopes of a particular nucleus we find that at certain mass numbers of the parent nuclei, the clusters emitted are getting shifted to the next lower atomic number. It is interesting to see that the change in clusters appears at those isotopes where a change in shape is occurring correspondingly. Such a change of clusters with shape change is studied for the first time in cluster decay. The alpha decay half lives of these nuclei are computed and these are compared with the available experimental alpha decay data. It is seen that the two are in good agreement. On making a comparison of the alpha half lives of the normal deformed and super deformed nuclei, it can be seen that the normal deformed $132$^Nd, $176-188$^Hg and $192$^Pb nuclei are found to be better alpha emitters than the super deformed (in excited state) $134,136$^Nd, $190-196$^Hg and $194$^Pb nuclei. The cluster decay studies reveal that as the atomic number of the parent nuclei increases the N \neq Z cluster emissions become equally or more probable than the N=Z emissions. On the whole the alpha and cluster emissions are more probable from the parents in the heavier mass region (A=180-198) than from the parents in the lighter mass region (A= 130-158). The effect of quadrupole ({\beta}_2) and hexadecapole ({\beta}_4) deformations of parent and fragments on half life times are also studied.

Abstract:We present a systematic calculation on α-decay half-lives of medium mass nuclei by the improved version of density-dependent cluster model, in which the nuclear potential between α-particle and daughter nucleus is obtained from the double-folding integral of the renormalized M3Y nucleon–nucleon interaction with the matter density distributions of α-particle and daughter nucleus, and the Coulomb potential is obtained from the double-folding integral of the proton–proton Coulomb interaction with the charge density distributions of α-particle and daughter nucleus. For the favored transitions from nuclear ground states, the theoretical partial half-lives of α-decay are in good agreement with experimental ones. On average, the density-dependent cluster model (DDCM) can reproduce the experimental α-decay half-lives of nuclei with Z=52–80 to within a factor of 3 or better. Therefore DDCM gives reliable and accurate results for favored α-decays in the medium mass region.

Abstract:The experimental data of newly observed a-decay chains, including new superheavy elements and medium-mass neutron-deficient isotopes, have been investigated by the generalized density-dependent cluster model. Instead of the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin barrier penetration probability, the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation with outgoing Coulomb wave boundary conditions is presented. The calculated alpha-decay half-lives are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. For superheavy nuclei, the calculated half-lives show that their stability against alpha-decay has a considerable increase with increasing neutron numbers. Predictions on alpha-decay half-lives are made for a new element 120, which may be useful for ongoing experiments.

Abstract:The α-decay half-lives of heavy and superheavy nuclei are systematically calculated using a radial wave function within the cluster model. The decaying state is considered as an isolated quasi-bound state, and the α-decay process is interpreted as the quantum transition from the quasi-bound state to the scattering state. Then the quasi-bound state wave function and the scattering state wave function, in combination with the difference of potentials, are used to give a clear expression of the α-decay width. The present study is mainly restricted to even–even nuclei with N>126, including the superheavy mass region. The obtained α-decay half-lives are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, the study has been extended to the newly observed heaviest nuclei. It is worth noting that the aim of this work is not only to reproduce the experimental data better, but also to extend our understanding of α decay.

Abstract:The radius of a nucleus is one of the important quantities in nuclear physics. Although there are many researches on ground-state properties of superheavy nuclei, researches on charge radii of superheavy nuclei are rare. In this article, nuclear root-mean-square (rms) charge radii of heavy and superheavy nuclei are extracted from the experimental alpha-decay data. alpha-decay calculations are performed within the generalized density-dependent cluster model, where alpha-decay half-lives are evaluated using quasibound state wave functions. The charge distribution of daughter nuclei is determined in the double-folding model to reproduce the experimental alpha-decay half-lives. The rms charge radius is then calculated using the resulting charge distribution. In addition, a simple formula is also proposed to calculate nuclear charge radii with the experimental alpha-decay energies and half-lives. The formula is directly derived from the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin barrier penetration probability with some approximations. The two different methods show good agreement with the experimental data for even-even nuclei, and the deduced results are consistent with other theoretical models. Moreover, nuclear radii of heavy and superheavy nuclei with Z = 98-116 are extracted from the alpha-decay data, for which alpha decay is a unique tool to probe nuclear sizes at present. Abstract:The β-decay half-lives of 110 neutron-rich isotopes of the elements from _{37}Rb to _{50}Sn were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The 40 new half-lives follow robust systematics and highlight the persistence of shell effects. The new data have direct implications for r-process calculations and reinforce the notion that the second (A≈130) and the rare-earth-element (A≈160) abundance peaks may result from the freeze-out of an (n,γ)⇄(γ,n) equilibrium. In such an equilibrium, the new half-lives are important factors determining the abundance of rare-earth elements, and allow for a more reliable discussion of the r process universality. It is anticipated that universality may not extend to the elements Sn, Sb, I, and Cs, making the detection of these elements in metal-poor stars of the utmost importance to determine the exact conditions of individual r-process events.

Abstract:The beta-decay half-lives of 55 neutron-rich nuclei Sn134-139, Sb134-142, Te137-144, I140-146, Xe142-148, Cs145-151, Ba148-153, and La151-155 were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory employing the projectile fission fragments of U-238. The nuclear level structure, which relates to deformation, has a large effect on the half-lives. The impact of newly measured half-lives on modeling the astrophysical origin of the heavy elements is studied in the context of r process nucleosynthesis. For a wide variety of astrophysical conditions, including those in which fission recycling occurs, the half-lives have an important local impact on the second (A approximate to 130) peak.
Density-dependent Cluster Model Study of Α-Decay and Cluster Radioactivity of Nuclei

Abstract:We have discussed a new cluster model of α-decay and cluster radioactivity: the density-dependent cluster model(DDCM),which is based on the microscopic nuclear potential and Coulomb potential.DDCM can give accurate theoretical half-lives for various decays of nuclei in a unified framework.Through a systematical calculation of half-lives of α-decay and cluster radioactivity,we find that the deviation between DDCM and experiment is usually less than a factor of 3.This good agreement shows that the density-dependent cluster model can further provide reliable predictions for future experiments.

Abstract:The \ensuremath{\alpha}-decay half-lives of the exotic $N=125$, 126, and 127 isotones (Po, Rn, Ra, Th, and U) are systematically studied by the density-dependent cluster model (DDCM). The influence of the neutron shell closure $N=126$ on the \ensuremath{\alpha}-cluster formation and penetration probabilities is analyzed and discussed in detail. By combining the DDCM and a two-level microscopic model together, the experimental half-lives of \ensuremath{\alpha} transitions to both the ground state and the excited state in the daughter nuclei are reproduced very well.

Abstract:Nuclear charge radii of ^{55,56}Ni were measured by collinear laser spectroscopy. The obtained information completes the behavior of the charge radii at the shell closure of the doubly magic nucleus ^{56}Ni. The trend of charge radii across the shell closures in calcium and nickel is surprisingly similar despite the fact that the ^{56}Ni core is supposed to be much softer than the ^{48}Ca core. The very low magnetic moment μ(^{55}Ni)=-1.108(20) μ_{N} indicates the impact of M1 excitations between spin-orbit partners across the N,Z=28 shell gaps. Our charge-radii results are compared to ab initio and nuclear density functional theory calculations, showing good agreement within theoretical uncertainties.

Abstract:Cluster decays of rare-earth nuclei are studied with a view to look for neutron magic shells for the $_{50}$Sn nucleus as the daughter product always. The $^{100}$Sn and $^{132}$Sn radioactivities are studied to find the most probable cluster decays and the possibility, if any, of new neutron shells. For a wide range of parent nuclei considered here (from Ba to Pt) $^{12}$C from $^{112}$Ba and $^{78}$Ni from $^{210}$Pt parent are predicted to be the most probable clusters (minimum decay half-life) referring to $^{100}$Sn and $^{132}$Sn daughters, respectively. Also, $^{22}$Mg decay of $^{122}$Sm is indicated at the second best possibilty for $^{100}$Sn-daughter decay. In addition to these well known magic shells (Z=50, N=50 and 82), a new magic shell at Z=50, N=66 ($^{116}$Sn daughter) is indicated for the $^{64}$Ni decay from $^{180}$Pt parent.
Cluster radioactivity from trans-tin to superheavy region using an improved empirical formula

Abstract:A simple relation $(aZ_{c} + b)(Z_{d}/Q)^{1/2} + (cZ_{c} + d)$ of estimation of the half-life of cluster emission is further improved for cluster and $\alpha$-decays, separately, by incorporating isospin of parent nucleus as well as angular momentum taken away by the emitted particle. This improved version is not only found robust in producing experimental half-lives belonging to the trans-tin and trans-lead regions but also elucidates cluster emission in superheavy nuclei over the usual $\alpha$-decay. Considering daughter nuclei around the doubly magic $^{100}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb nuclei for trans-tin and trans-lead (including superheavy) parents, respectively, a systematic and extensive study of 56$\leq$Z$\leq$120 isotopes is performed for the light and heavy cluster emissions. A fair competition among cluster emission, $\alpha$-decay, spontaneous fission, and $\beta$-decay is observed in this broad range resulting in a substantial probability of C to Sr clusters from several nuclei, which demonstrates the adequacy of shell effects. The present article proposes a single, improved, latest-fitted, and effective formula of cluster radioactivity that can be used to estimate precise half-lives for a wide range of the periodic chart from trans-tin to superheavy nuclei.

Abstract:The {\beta} decays of very neutron-rich nuclides in the Co-Zn region were studied experimentally at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory using the NSCL {\beta}-counting station in conjunction with the neutron detector NERO. We measured the branchings for {\beta}-delayed neutron emission (Pn values) for 74Co (18 +/- 15%) and 75-77Ni (10 +/- 2.8%, 14 +/- 3.6%, and 30 +/- 24%, respectively) for the first time, and remeasured the Pn values of 77-79Cu, 79,81Zn, and 82Ga. For 77-79Cu and for 81Zn we obtain significantly larger Pn values compared to previous work. While the new half-lives for the Ni isotopes from this experiment had been reported before, we present here in addition the first half-life measurements of 75Co (30 +/- 11 ms) and 80Cu (170+110 -50 ms). Our results are compared with theoretical predictions, and their impact on various types of models for the astrophysical rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) is explored. We find that with our new data, the classical r-process model is better able to reproduce the A = 78-80 abundance pattern inferred from the solar abundances. The new data also influence r-process models based on the neutrino-driven high-entropy winds in core collapse supernovae.
