Abstract:In order to employ solid state quantum dots as qubits, both a high degree of control over the confinement potential as well as sensitive charge detection are essential. We demonstrate that by combining local anodic oxidation with local Schottky-gates, these criteria are nicely fulfilled in the resulting hybrid device. To this end, a quantum dot with adjacent charge detector is defined. After tuning the quantum dot to contain only a single electron, we are able to observe the charge detector signal of the quantum dot state for a wide range of tunnel couplings.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: how to achieve highly sensitive detection of the charge state of quantum dots (QDs) while realizing a highly controllable confinement potential for them. Specifically, the author aims to construct a hybrid quantum - dot device by combining local anodic oxidation (LAO) and local Schottky - gates to meet the requirements for qubit applications. ### Background and Problems 1. **High Tunability** - In order to use solid - state quantum dots as qubits, a high degree of control over the confinement potential of quantum dots is required. - Traditional methods such as etching or LAO can define quantum dots, but their confinement potentials are difficult to adjust after manufacturing, resulting in low tunability. 2. **High - Sensitivity Charge Detection** - At the same time, the ability to detect the charge state of quantum dots is required. The presence of metal gates can severely reduce the read - out fidelity, and methods without metal gates are difficult to achieve high tunability. 3. **Combining the Advantages of Both** - The author proposes a method that combines LAO and Schottky - gates, aiming to achieve both high tunability and high - sensitivity charge detection simultaneously. ### Methods and Results - **Experimental Design** - Use an AlGaAs heterostructure and perform local anodic oxidation on its surface with an AFM to form oxide lines, defining quantum dots and quantum point contacts (QPCs). - Use Schottky - gates to adjust the electrical properties of quantum dots, enabling precise control of the state of single electrons. - **Experimental Results** - Successfully achieved highly sensitive detection of single electrons in quantum dots. - Observed Coulomb oscillations and minimum transconductance, verifying the change in the charge state of quantum dots. - Experiments show that this method can detect the charge state of quantum dots in a wide range of tunneling couplings, demonstrating its high tunability and good read - out fidelity. ### Conclusion By combining the techniques of LAO and Schottky - gates, the author has successfully constructed a hybrid quantum - dot device with both high tunability and high - sensitivity charge detection. This achievement provides an important technological basis for future solid - state qubit research based on quantum dots.
