Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.
On the Weyl problem for complete surfaces in the hyperbolic and anti-de Sitter spaces

Abstract:The classical Weyl problem (solved by Lewy, Alexandrov, Pogorelov, and others) asks whether any metric of curvature $K\geq 0$ on the sphere is induced on the boundary of a unique convex body in $\R^3$. The answer was extended to surfaces in hyperbolic space by Alexandrov in the 1950s, and a ``dual'' statement, describing convex bodies in terms of the third fundamental form of their boundary (e.g. their dihedral angles, for an ideal polyhedron) was later proved. We describe three conjectural generalizations of the Weyl problem in $\HH^3$ and its dual to unbounded convex subsets and convex surfaces, in ways that are relevant to contemporary geometry since a number of recent results and well-known open problems can be considered as special cases. One focus is on convex domain having a ``thin'' asymptotic boundary, for instance a quasicircle -- this part of the problem is strongly related to the theory of Kleinian groups. A second direction is towards convex subsets with a ``thick'' ideal boundary, for instance a disjoint union of disks -- here one find connections to problems in complex analysis, such as the Koebe circle domain conjecture. A third direction is towards complete, convex disks of infinite area in $\HH^3$ and surfaces in hyperbolic ends -- with connections to questions on circle packings or grafting on the hyperbolic disk. Similar statements are proposed in anti-de Sitter geometry, a Lorentzian cousin of hyperbolic geometry where interesting new phenomena can occur, and in Minkowski and Half-pipe geometry. We also collect some partial new results mostly based on recent works.

Properties and Transformations of Weingarten Surfaces

Abstract:The Weingarten relations satisfied by rotationally symmetric surfaces in Euclidean 3-space E3 are considered from three points of view: restrictions on the slope of the relation at umbilic points, the action of SL2(R) as fractional linear transformations on the space of curvatures, and variational formulations for the relations. With regard to the first, we obtain bounds on the slope of a Weingarten relation in terms of the fall off of the radii of curvature at an umbilic point. This generalizes recent work by a number of authors. For the second, we show that the action descends from curvature space to E3 and splits into three natural geometric actions. This is applied to a class of Weingarten surfaces, called semi-quadratic, on which the action is shown to be transitive. Finally, a natural Lagrangian formulation is given for certain types of Weingarten relations and stability established.

Abstract:Using the Levi‐Civita connection on the noncommutative differential 1‐forms of a spectral triple (B,H,D) , we define the full Riemann curvature tensor, the Ricci curvature tensor and scalar curvature. We give a definition of Dirac spectral triples and derive a general Weitzenböck formula for them. We apply these tools to θ ‐deformations of compact Riemannian manifolds. We show that the Riemann and Ricci tensors transform naturally under θ ‐deformation, whereas the connection Laplacian, Clifford representation of the curvature, and the scalar curvature are all invariant under deformation.

It is shown that a very special class of the above space-time admits proper Weyl projective curvature collineation.

Abstract:This is an exposition of recent results -- obtained in joint work with Andrzej Derdzinski -- on essentially conformally symmetric (ECS) manifolds, that is, those pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with parallel Weyl curvature which are not locally symmetric or conformally flat. In the 1970s, Roter proved that while Riemannian ECS manifolds do not exist, pseudo-Riemannian ones do exist in all dimensions $n\geq 4$, and realize all indefinite metric signatures. The local structure of ECS manifolds is known, and every ECS manifold carries a distinguished null parallel distribution $\mathcal{D}$, whose rank is always equal to $1$ or $2$. We review basic facts about ECS manifolds, briefly discuss the construction of compact examples, and outline the proof of a topological structure result: outside of the locally homogeneous case and up to a double covering, every compact rank-one ECS manifold is a bundle over $\mathbb{S}^1$ whose fibers are the leaves of $\mathcal{D}^\perp$. Finally, we mention some classification results for compact rank-one ECS manifolds.

Abstract:We investigate the curvature of Eschenburg spaces with respect to two different metrics, one constructed by Eschenburg and the other by Wilking. With respect to the Eschenburg metric, we obtain a simple complete characterization of the curvature of every Eschenburg space in terms of the triples of integers defining the space. With respect to Wilking's metric, we study all the examples whose natural isometry group acts with cohomogeneity two. Here, we find that apart from the previously known examples with almost positive curvature, all the remaining examples have open sets of points with zero-curvature planes.

Abstract:For Einstein four-manifolds with positive scalar curvature, we derive relations among various positivity conditions on the curvature tensor, some of which are of great importance in the study of the Ricci flow. Abstract:We study toroidal compactifications of finite volume complex hyperbolic manifolds. We obtain results on the existence or nonexistence of Kähler metrics satisfying certain nonpositive curvature properties on these compactifications. Starting from quotients of complex hyperbolic space by deep enough non-uniform arithmetic lattices, we also verify the Shafarevich conjecture for their compactifications, by showing that their universal covers are Stein.

Abstract:The {\em Wiman-Edge pencil} is the universal family $C_t, t\in\mathcal B$ of projective, genus $6$, complex-algebraic curves admitting a faithful action of the icosahedral group $\Af_5$. The curve $C_0$, discovered by Wiman in 1895 \cite{Wiman} and called the {\em Wiman curve}, is the unique smooth, genus $6$ curve admitting a faithful action of the symmetric group $\Sf_5$. In this paper we give an explicit uniformization of $\mathcal B$ as a non-congruence quotient $\Gamma\backslash \Hf$ of the hyperbolic plane $\Hf$, where $\Gamma<\PSL_2(\Z)$ is a subgroup of index $18$. We also give modular interpretations for various aspects of this uniformization, for example for the degenerations of $C_t$ into $10$ lines (resp.\ $5$ conics) whose intersection graph is the Petersen graph (resp.\ $K_5$). In the second half of this paper we give an explicit arithmetic uniformization of the Wiman curve $C_0$ itself as the quotient $\Lambda\backslash \Hf$, where $\Lambda$ is a principal level $5$ subgroup of a certain "unit spinor norm" group of Möbius transformations. We then prove that $C_0$ is a certain moduli space of Hodge structures, endowing it with the structure of a Shimura curve of indefinite quaternionic type.

Abstract:We revisit the classical problem by Weyl, as well as its generalisations, concerning the isometric immersions ofS2into simply-connected 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Gauss curvature. A sufficient condition is exhibited for the existence of globalC1,1-isometric immersions. Our developments are based on the framework a la Labourie (J. Differential Geom. 30 (1989) 395-424) of analysing isometric immersions viaJ-holomorphic curves. We obtain along the way a generalisation of a well-known theorem due to Heinz and Pogorelov.

Abstract:We determine pseudosymmetry type curvature conditions of some 2-quasi-Einstein manifolds (M,g), dim M > 3, with the Riemann-Christoffel curvature tensor R expresed by a linear combination of Kulkarni-Nomizu products formed by the metric tensor g, the Ricci tensor S and its square S^2. Certain warped product manifolds, with 2-dimensional base, and in particular some spacetimes, are such 2-quasi Einstein manifolds.

Abstract:Motivated by the classical Euler elastic curves, David A. Singer posed in 1999 the problem of determining a plane curve whose curvature is given in terms of its position. We propound the same question in Lorentz-Minkowski plane, focusing on spacelike and timelike curves. In this article, we study those curves in $\mathbb{L}^2$ whose curvature depends on the Lorentzian pseudodistance from the origin, and those ones whose curvature depends on the Lorentzian pseudodistance through the horizontal or vertical geodesic to a fixed lightlike geodesic. Making use of the notions of geometric angular momentum (with respect to the origin) and geometric linear momentum (with respect to the fixed lightlike geodesic) respectively, we get two abstract integrability results to determine such curves through quadratures. In this way, we find out several new families of Lorentzian spiral, special elastic and grim-reaper curves whose intrinsic equations are expressed in terms of elementary functions. In addition, we provide uniqueness results for the generatrix curve of the Enneper's surface of second kind and for Lorentzian versions of some well known curves in the Euclidean setting, like the Bernoulli lemniscate, the cardioid, the sinusoidal spirals and some non-degenerate conics. We are able to get arc-length parametrizations of them and they are depicted graphically.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic growth of the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on singular Riemannian manifolds, where all geometrical invariants appearing in classical spectral asymptotics are unbounded, and the total volume can be infinite. Under suitable assumptions on the curvature blow-up, we show how the singularity influences the Weyl's asymptotics. Our main motivation comes from the construction of singular Riemannian metrics with prescribed non-classical Weyl's law. Namely, for any non-decreasing slowly varying function $\upsilon$ we construct a singular Riemannian structure whose spectrum is discrete and satisfies \[ N(\lambda) \sim \frac{\omega_n}{(2\pi)^n} \lambda^{n/2} \upsilon(\lambda). \] Examples of slowly varying functions are $\log\lambda$, its iterations $\log_k \lambda = \log_{k-1}\log\lambda$, any rational function with positive coefficients of $\log_k \lambda$, and functions with non-lo\-ga\-rithmic growth such as $\exp\left((\log \lambda)^{\alpha_1} \dots (\log_k \lambda)^{\alpha_k} \right)$ for $\alpha_i \in (0,1)$. A key tool in our arguments is a new quantitative estimate for the remainder of the heat trace and the Weyl's function on Riemannian manifolds, which is of independent interest.
