Abstract:It is well known that Sokoban is PSPACE-complete (Culberson 1998) and several of its variants are NP-hard (Demaine et al. 2003). In this paper we prove the NP-hardness of some variants of Sokoban where the warehouse keeper can only pull boxes.

Abstract:Sokoban is one of the most studied combinatorial puzzle game in the literature. Its computational complexity was first shown to be PSPACE-complete in 1997. A new proof of this result was obtained by Hearn and Demaine (2005) [8], by introducing the Nondeterministic Constraint Logic (Ncl) problem. Since then, Ncl has been used to prove the PSPACE-completeness of several other puzzles including a few Sokoban variants, by many authors. In this paper, we show that Snowman, a new Sokoban-like puzzle game released in 2015, is PSPACE-complete by reduction from Ncl.
Complexity of Motion Planning of Arbitrarily Many Robots: Gadgets, Petri Nets, and Counter Machines

Abstract:We extend the motion-planning-through-gadgets framework to several new scenarios involving various numbers of robots/agents, and analyze the complexity of the resulting motion-planning problems. While past work considers just one robot or one robot per player, most of our models allow for one or more locations to spawn new robots in each time step, leading to arbitrarily many robots. In the 0-player context, where all motion is deterministically forced, we prove that deciding whether any robot ever reaches a specified location is undecidable, by representing a counter machine. In the 1-player context, where the player can choose how to move the robots, we prove equivalence to Petri nets, EXPSPACE-completeness for reaching a specified location, PSPACE-completeness for reconfiguration, and ACKERMANN-completeness for reconfiguration when robots can be destroyed in addition to spawned. Finally, we consider a variation on the standard 2-player context where, instead of one robot per player, we have one robot shared by the players, along with a ko rule to prevent immediately undoing the previous move. We prove this impartial 2-player game EXPTIME-complete.

Walking through Doors is Hard, even without Staircases: Proving PSPACE-hardness via Planar Assemblies of Door Gadgets

Abstract:A door gadget has two states and three tunnels that can be traversed by an agent (player, robot, etc.): the "open" and "close" tunnel sets the gadget's state to open and closed, respectively, while the "traverse" tunnel can be traversed if and only if the door is in the open state. We prove that it is PSPACE-complete to decide whether an agent can move from one location to another through a planar assembly of such door gadgets, removing the traditional need for crossover gadgets and thereby simplifying past PSPACE-hardness proofs of Lemmings and Nintendo games Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong Country. Our result holds in all but one of the possible local planar embedding of the open, close, and traverse tunnels within a door gadget; in the one remaining case, we prove NP-hardness. We also introduce and analyze a simpler type of door gadget, called the self-closing door. This gadget has two states and only two tunnels, similar to the "open" and "traverse" tunnels of doors, except that traversing the traverse tunnel also closes the door. In a variant called the symmetric self-closing door, the "open" tunnel can be traversed if and only if the door is closed. We prove that it is PSPACE-complete to decide whether an agent can move from one location to another through a planar assembly of either type of self-closing door. Then we apply this framework to prove new PSPACE-hardness results for eight different 3D Mario games and Sokobond.
Solving Sequential Manipulation Puzzles by Finding Easier Subproblems

Abstract:We consider a set of challenging sequential manipulation puzzles, where an agent has to interact with multiple movable objects and navigate narrow passages. Such settings are notoriously difficult for Task-and-Motion Planners, as they require interdependent regrasps and solving hard motion planning problems. In this paper, we propose to search over sequences of easier pick-and-place subproblems, which can lead to the solution of the manipulation puzzle. Our method combines a heuristic-driven forward search of subproblems with an optimization-based Task-and-Motion Planning solver. To guide the search, we introduce heuristics to generate and prioritize useful subgoals. We evaluate our approach on various manually designed and automatically generated scenes, demonstrating the benefits of auxiliary subproblems in sequential manipulation planning.

Coordinated Motion Planning: Multi-Agent Path Finding in a Densely Packed, Bounded Domain

Abstract:We study Multi-Agent Path Finding for arrangements of labeled agents in the interior of a simply connected domain: Given a unique start and target position for each agent, the goal is to find a sequence of parallel, collision-free agent motions that minimizes the overall time (the makespan) until all agents have reached their respective targets. A natural case is that of a simply connected polygonal domain with axis-parallel boundaries and integer coordinates, i.e., a simple polyomino, which amounts to a simply connected union of lattice unit squares or cells. We focus on the particularly challenging setting of densely packed agents, i.e., one per cell, which strongly restricts the mobility of agents, and requires intricate coordination of motion. We provide a variety of novel results for this problem, including (1) a characterization of polyominoes in which a reconfiguration plan is guaranteed to exist; (2) a characterization of shape parameters that induce worst-case bounds on the makespan; (3) a suite of algorithms to achieve asymptotically worst-case optimal performance with respect to the achievable stretch for cases with severely limited maneuverability. This corresponds to bounding the ratio between obtained makespan and the lower bound provided by the max-min distance between the start and target position of any agent and our shape parameters. Our results extend findings by Demaine et al. (SIAM Journal on Computing, 2019) who investigated the problem for solid rectangular domains, and in the closely related field of Permutation Routing, as presented by Alpert et al. (Computational Geometry, 2022) for convex pieces of grid graphs.

PSPACE-Hard 2D Super Mario Games: Thirteen Doors

Abstract:We prove PSPACE-hardness for fifteen games in the Super Mario Bros. 2D platforming video game series. Previously, only the original Super Mario Bros. was known to be PSPACE-hard (FUN 2016), though several of the games we study were known to be NP-hard (FUN 2014). Our reductions build door gadgets with open, close, and traverse traversals, in each case using mechanics unique to the game. While some of our door constructions are similar to those from FUN 2016, those for Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Land 2, Super Mario World 2, and the New Super Mario Bros. series are quite different; notably, the Super Mario Bros. 2 door is extremely difficult. Doors remain elusive for just two 2D Mario games (Super Mario Land and Super Mario Run); we prove that these games are at least NP-hard.

The Parameterized Complexity of Motion Planning for Snake-Like Robots

Abstract:We study the parameterized complexity of a variant of the classic video game Snake that models real-world problems of motion planning. Given a snake-like robot with an initial position and a final position in an environment (modeled by a graph), our objective is to determine whether the robot can reach the final position from the initial position without intersecting itself. Naturally, this problem models a wide-variety of scenarios, ranging from the transportation of linked wagons towed by a locomotor at an airport or a supermarket to the movement of a group of agents that travel in an `ant-like' fashion and the construction of trains in amusement parks. Unfortunately, already on grid graphs, this problem is PSPACE-complete [Biasi and Ophelders, 2016]. Nevertheless, we prove that even on general graphs, the problem is solvable in time $k^{\mathcal{O}(k)}|I|^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$ where $k$ is the size of the snake, and $|I|$ is the input size. In particular, this shows that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT). Towards this, we show how to employ color-coding to sparsify the configuration graph of the problem to have size $k^{\mathcal{O}(k)}|I|^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$ rather than $|I|^{\mathcal{O}(k)}$. We believe that our approach will find other applications in motion planning. Additionally, we show that the problem is unlikely to admit a polynomial kernel even on grid graphs, but it admits a treewidth-reduction procedure. To the best of our knowledge, the study of the parameterized complexity of motion planning problems (where the intermediate configurations of the motion are of importance) has so far been largely overlooked. Thus, our work is pioneering in this regard.

BOMP: Bin-Optimized Motion Planning

Abstract:In logistics, the ability to quickly compute and execute pick-and-place motions from bins is critical to increasing productivity. We present Bin-Optimized Motion Planning (BOMP), a motion planning framework that plans arm motions for a six-axis industrial robot with a long-nosed suction tool to remove boxes from deep bins. BOMP considers robot arm kinematics, actuation limits, the dimensions of a grasped box, and a varying height map of a bin environment to rapidly generate time-optimized, jerk-limited, and collision-free trajectories. The optimization is warm-started using a deep neural network trained offline in simulation with 25,000 scenes and corresponding trajectories. Experiments with 96 simulated and 15 physical environments suggest that BOMP generates collision-free trajectories that are up to 58 % faster than baseline sampling-based planners and up to 36 % faster than an industry-standard Up-Over-Down algorithm, which has an extremely low 15 % success rate in this context. BOMP also generates jerk-limited trajectories while baselines do not. Nonholonomic Motion Planning as Efficient as Piano Mover's

Abstract:We present an algorithm for non-holonomic motion planning (or 'parking a car') that is as computationally efficient as a simple approach to solving the famous Piano-mover's problem, where the non-holonomic constraints are ignored. The core of the approach is a graph-discretization of the problem. The graph-discretization is provably accurate in modeling the non-holonomic constraints, and yet is nearly as small as the straightforward regular grid discretization of the Piano-mover's problem into a 3D volume of 2D position plus angular orientation. Where the Piano mover's graph has one vertex and edges to six neighbors each, we have three vertices with a total of ten edges, increasing the graph size by less than a factor of two, and this factor does not depend on spatial or angular resolution. The local edge connections are organized so that they represent globally consistent turn and straight segments. The graph can be used with Dijkstra's algorithm, A*, value iteration or any other graph algorithm. Furthermore, the graph has a structure that lends itself to processing with deterministic massive parallelism. The turn and straight curves divide the configuration space into many parallel groups. We use this to develop a customized 'kernel-style' graph processing method. It results in an N-turn planner that requires no heuristics or load balancing and is as efficient as a simple solution to the Piano mover's problem even in sequential form. In parallel form it is many times faster than the sequential processing of the graph, and can run many times a second on a consumer grade GPU while exploring a configuration space pose grid with very high spatial and angular resolution. We prove approximation quality and computational complexity and demonstrate that it is a flexible, practical, reliable, and efficient component for a production solution.

Abstract:In terms of Rudyak's generalization of Farber's topological complexity of the path motion planning problem in robotics, we give a complete description of the topological instabilities in any sequential motion planning algorithm for a system consisting of non-colliding autonomous entities performing tasks in space whilst avoiding collisions with several moving obstacles. The Isotopy Extension Theorem from manifold topology implies, somewhat surprisingly, that the complexity of this problem coincides with the complexity of the corresponding problem in which the obstacles are stationary.

GOMP: Grasp-Optimized Motion Planning for Bin Picking

Abstract:Rapid and reliable robot bin picking is a critical challenge in automating warehouses, often measured in picks-per-hour (PPH). We explore increasing PPH using faster motions based on optimizing over a set of candidate grasps. The source of this set of grasps is two-fold: (1) grasp-analysis tools such as Dex-Net generate multiple candidate grasps, and (2) each of these grasps has a degree of freedom about which a robot gripper can rotate. In this paper, we present Grasp-Optimized Motion Planning (GOMP), an algorithm that speeds up the execution of a bin-picking robot's operations by incorporating robot dynamics and a set of candidate grasps produced by a grasp planner into an optimizing motion planner. We compute motions by optimizing with sequential quadratic programming (SQP) and iteratively updating trust regions to account for the non-convex nature of the problem. In our formulation, we constrain the motion to remain within the mechanical limits of the robot while avoiding obstacles. We further convert the problem to a time-minimization by repeatedly shorting a time horizon of a trajectory until the SQP is infeasible. In experiments with a UR5, GOMP achieves a speedup of 9x over a baseline planner.

Scaling Motion Planning Infeasibility Proofs

Abstract:Achieving completeness in the motion planning problem demands substantial computation power, especially in high dimensions. Recent developments in parallel computing have rendered this more achievable. We introduce an embarrassingly parallel algorithm for constructing infeasibility proofs. Specifically, we design and implement a manifold triangulation algorithm on GPUs based on manifold tracing with Coxeter triangulation. To address the challenge of extensive memory usage within limited GPU memory resources during triangulation, we introduce batch triangulation as part of our design. The algorithm provides two orders of magnitude speed-up compared to the previous method for constructing infeasibility proofs. The resulting asymptotically complete motion planning algorithm effectively leverages the computational capabilities of both CPU and GPU architectures and maintains minimum data transfer between the two parts. We perform experiments on 5-DoF and 6-Dof manipulator scenes.

Planning for Complex Non-prehensile Manipulation Among Movable Objects by Interleaving Multi-Agent Pathfinding and Physics-Based Simulation

Abstract:Real-world manipulation problems in heavy clutter require robots to reason about potential contacts with objects in the environment. We focus on pick-and-place style tasks to retrieve a target object from a shelf where some `movable' objects must be rearranged in order to solve the task. In particular, our motivation is to allow the robot to reason over and consider non-prehensile rearrangement actions that lead to complex robot-object and object-object interactions where multiple objects might be moved by the robot simultaneously, and objects might tilt, lean on each other, or topple. To support this, we query a physics-based simulator to forward simulate these interaction dynamics which makes action evaluation during planning computationally very expensive. To make the planner tractable, we establish a connection between the domain of Manipulation Among Movable Objects and Multi-Agent Pathfinding that lets us decompose the problem into two phases our M4M algorithm iterates over. First we solve a multi-agent planning problem that reasons about the configurations of movable objects but does not forward simulate a physics model. Next, an arm motion planning problem is solved that uses a physics-based simulator but does not search over possible configurations of movable objects. We run simulated and real-world experiments with the PR2 robot and compare against relevant baseline algorithms. Our results highlight that M4M generates complex 3D interactions, and solves at least twice as many problems as the baselines with competitive performance.

Tetris with Few Piece Types

Abstract:We prove NP-hardness and #P-hardness of Tetris clearing (clearing an initial board using a given sequence of pieces) with the Super Rotation System (SRS), even when the pieces are limited to any two of the seven Tetris piece types. This result is the first advance on a question posed twenty years ago: which piece sets are easy vs. hard? All previous Tetris NP-hardness proofs used five of the seven piece types. We also prove ASP-completeness of Tetris clearing, using three piece types, as well as versions of 3-Partition and Numerical 3-Dimensional Matching where all input integers are distinct. Finally, we prove NP-hardness of Tetris survival and clearing under the "hard drops only" and "20G" modes, using two piece types, improving on a previous "hard drops only" result that used five piece types.

Multi-Robot Motion Planning for Unit Discs with Revolving Areas

Abstract:We study the problem of motion planning for a collection of $n$ labeled unit disc robots in a polygonal environment. We assume that the robots have revolving areas around their start and final positions: that each start and each final is contained in a radius $2$ disc lying in the free space, not necessarily concentric with the start or final position, which is free from other start or final positions. This assumption allows a weakly-monotone motion plan, in which robots move according to an ordering as follows: during the turn of a robot $R$ in the ordering, it moves fully from its start to final position, while other robots do not leave their revolving areas. As $R$ passes through a revolving area, a robot $R'$ that is inside this area may move within the revolving area to avoid a collision. Notwithstanding the existence of a motion plan, we show that minimizing the total traveled distance in this setting, specifically even when the motion plan is restricted to be weakly-monotone, is APX-hard, ruling out any polynomial-time $(1+\epsilon)$-approximation algorithm. On the positive side, we present the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for computing a feasible weakly-monotone motion plan. The total distance traveled by the robots is within an $O(1)$ factor of that of the optimal motion plan, which need not be weakly monotone. Our algorithm extends to an online setting in which the polygonal environment is fixed but the initial and final positions of robots are specified in an online manner. Finally, we observe that the overhead in the overall cost that we add while editing the paths to avoid robot-robot collision can vary significantly depending on the ordering we chose. Finding the best ordering in this respect is known to be NP-hard, and we provide a polynomial time $O(\log n \log \log n)$-approximation algorithm for this problem.

Connected Coordinated Motion Planning with Bounded Stretch

Abstract:We consider the problem of connected coordinated motion planning for a large collective of simple, identical robots: From a given start grid configuration of robots, we need to reach a desired target configuration via a sequence of parallel, collision-free robot motions, such that the set of robots induces a connected grid graph at all integer times. The objective is to minimize the makespan of the motion schedule, i.e., to reach the new configuration in a minimum amount of time. We show that this problem is NP-complete, even for deciding whether a makespan of 2 can be achieved, while it is possible to check in polynomial time whether a makespan of 1 can be achieved. On the algorithmic side, we establish simultaneous constant-factor approximation for two fundamental parameters, by achieving constant stretch for constant scale. Scaled shapes (which arise by increasing all dimensions of a given object by the same multiplicative factor) have been considered in previous seminal work on self-assembly, often with unbounded or logarithmic scale factors; we provide methods for a generalized scale factor, bounded by a constant. Moreover, our algorithm achieves a constant stretch factor: If mapping the start configuration to the target configuration requires a maximum Manhattan distance of $d$, then the total duration of our overall schedule is $\mathcal{O}(d)$, which is optimal up to constant factors.

An Efficient Motion Planning Method with a Lazy Demonstration Graph for Repetitive Pick-and-Place

Abstract:Robotic systems frequently need to plan consecutive similar manipulation in some scenarios (e.g., pick-and-place tasks), leading to similar motion plans. Moreover, the workspace of a robot changes with the difference in operation actions, which affects subsequent tasks. Therefore, it is significant to reuse information from previous solutions for new motion planning instances to adapt to workplace changes. This paper proposes the Lazy Demonstration Graph (LDG) planner, a novel motion planner that exploits successful and high-quality planning cases as prior knowledge. In addition, a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is established by learning the distribution of samples in the planning cases. Through the trained GMM, more samples are placed in a promising location related to the planning tasks for achieving the purpose of adaptive sampling. This adaptive sampling strategy is combined with the Lazy Probabilistic Roadmap (LazyPRM) algorithm; in the subsequent planning tasks, this paper uses the multi-query property of a road map to solve motion planning problems without planning from scratch. The lazy collision detection of the LazyPRM algorithm helps overcome changes in the workplace by searching candidate paths. Our method also improves the quality and success rate of the path planning of LazyPRM. Compared with other state-of-the-art motion planning algorithms, our method achieved better performance in the planning time and path quality. In the repetitive motion planning experiment of the manipulator for pick-and-place tasks, we designed two different experimental scenarios in the simulation environment. The physical experiments are also carried out in AUBO-i5 robot arm. Accordingly, the experimental results verified our method's validity and robustness.
Search-Based Path Planning among Movable Obstacles

Abstract:This paper investigates Path planning Among Movable Obstacles (PAMO), which seeks a minimum cost collision-free path among static obstacles from start to goal while allowing the robot to push away movable obstacles (i.e., objects) along its path when needed. To develop planners that are complete and optimal for PAMO, the planner has to search a giant state space involving both the location of the robot as well as the locations of the objects, which grows exponentially with respect to the number of objects. The main idea in this paper is that, only a small fraction of this giant state space needs to be explored during planning as guided by a heuristic, and most of the objects far away from the robot are intact, which thus leads to runtime efficient algorithms. Based on this idea, this paper introduces two PAMO formulations, i.e., bi-objective and resource constrained problems in an occupancy grid, and develops PAMO*, a search method with completeness and solution optimality guarantees, to solve the two problems. We then further extend PAMO* to hybrid-state PAMO* to plan in continuous spaces with high-fidelity interaction between the robot and the objects. Our results show that, PAMO* can often find optimal solutions within a second in cluttered environments with up to 400 objects.

Abstract:Path planning is a crucial algorithmic approach for designing robot behaviors. Sampling-based approaches, like rapidly exploring random trees (RRTs) or probabilistic roadmaps, are prominent algorithmic solutions for path planning problems. Despite its exponential convergence rate, RRT can only find suboptimal paths. On the other hand, $\text {RRT}^*$, a widely-used extension to RRT, guarantees probabilistic completeness for finding optimal paths but suffers in practice from slow convergence in complex environments. Furthermore, real-world robotic environments are often partially observable or with poorly described dynamics, casting the application of $\text {RRT}^*$ in complex tasks suboptimal. This letter studies a novel algorithmic formulation of the popular Monte-Carlo tree search (MCTS) algorithm for robot path planning. Notably, we study Monte-Carlo Path Planning (MCPP) by analyzing and proving, on the one part, its exponential convergence rate to the optimal path in fully observable Markov decision processes (MDPs), and on the other part, its probabilistic completeness for finding feasible paths in partially observable MDPs (POMDPs) assuming limited distance observability (proof sketch). Our algorithmic contribution allows us to employ recently proposed variants of MCTS with different exploration strategies for robot path planning. Our experimental evaluations in simulated 2D and 3D environments with a 7 degrees of freedom (DOF) manipulator, as well as in a real-world robot path planning task, demonstrate the superiority of MCPP in POMDP tasks.

Abstract:An infinite 3D plate of homogeneous incompressible fluid is considered, with finite thickness, together with a 2D infinite homogeneous mass in its centre. Einstein equations are exactly solved, in the interior of the 3D mass. The solution is joined to the exterior vacuum metric of Taub. Every value for the 2D mass, positive or negative, allows a perfect junction.
