Abstract:The study of localizations of groups has concentrated on group theoretic properties which are preserved by localization. In this paper we look at finitely generated soluble groups and determine when the local groups associated with them are soluble.

Abstract:In this paper, we deal with locally graded groups whose subgroups are either subnormal or soluble of bounded derived length, say d. In particular, we prove that every locally (soluble-by-finite) group with this property is either soluble or an extension of a soluble group of derived length at most d by a finite group, which fits between a minimal simple group and its automorphism group. We also classify all the finite non-abelian simple groups whose proper subgroups are metabelian.

Abstract:We describe the applications of localization methods, in particular the functorial localization formula, in the proofs of several conjectures from string theory. The functorial localization formula pushes the computations on complicated moduli spaces to simple moduli spaces. It is a key technique in the proof of the general mirror formula, the proof of the Hori-Vafa formula for explicit expressions of basic hypergeornetric series of homogeneous manifolds, and the proof of the Marino-Vafa formula for Hodge integrals. The proposal of Strominger-Yau-Zaslow of mirror symmetry will also be discussed.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of "local stability in permutations" for finitely generated groups. If a group is sofic and locally stable in our sense, then it is also locally embeddable into finite groups (LEF). Our notion is weaker than the "permutation stability" introduced by Glebsky-Rivera and Arzhantseva-Paunescu, which allows one to upgrade soficity to residual finiteness. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for an amenable group to be locally permutation stable, in terms of invariant random subgroups (IRSs), inspired by a similar criterion for permutation stability due to Becker, Lubotzky and Thom. We apply our criterion to prove that derived subgroups of topological full groups of Cantor minimal subshifts are locally stable, using Zheng's classification of IRSs for these groups. This last result provides continuum-many groups which are locally stable, but not stable.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a locally graded group and suppose that every non-nilpotent subgroup of $G$ is permutable. We prove that $G$ is soluble. (In light of previous results of the authors, it suffices to prove that $G$ is soluble if it is periodic.

Abstract:The class of those (torsion-free) $SI^*$-groups which are not locally soluble, has the cardinality of the continuum. Moreover, these groups are not only pairwise non-isomorphic, but also they generate pairwise different varieties of groups. Thus, the set of varieties generated by not locally soluble $SI^*$-groups is of the same cardinality as the set of all varieties of groups. It is possible to localize a variety of groups which contains all groups and varieties constructed. The examples constructed here continue the well known example of a not locally soluble $SI^*$-group built by Hall and by Kovács and Neumann.

Abstract:Abstract It is well known that all saturated formations of finite soluble groups are locally defined and, except for the trivial formation, have many different local definitions. I show that for Lie and Leibniz algebras over a field of characteristic 0, the formations of all nilpotent algebras and of all soluble algebras are the only locally defined formations and the latter has many local definitions. Over a field of nonzero characteristic, a saturated formation of soluble Lie algebras has at most one local definition, but a locally defined saturated formation of soluble Leibniz algebras other than that of nilpotent algebras has more than one local definition.

Abstract:The set of finitely generated subgroups of the group $PL_+(I)$ of orientation-preserving piecewise-linear homeomorphisms of the unit interval includes many important groups, most notably R.~Thompson's group $F$. In this paper we show that every finitely generated subgroup $G<PL_+(I)$ is either soluble, or contains an embedded copy of Brin's group $B$, a finitely generated, non-soluble group, which verifies a conjecture of the first author from 2009. In the case that $G$ is soluble, we show that the derived length of $G$ is bounded above by the number of breakpoints of any finite set of generators. We specify a set of `computable' subgroups of $PL_+(I)$ (which includes R. Thompson's group $F$) and we give an algorithm which determines in finite time whether or not any given finite subset $X$ of such a computable group generates a soluble group. When the group is soluble, the algorithm also determines the derived length of $\langle X\rangle$. Finally, we give a solution of the membership problem for a family of finitely generated soluble subgroups of any computable subgroup of $PL_+(I)$.

The connectivity of the normalising and permuting graph of a finite soluble group

Abstract:We introduce the normalising graph of a group and study the connectivity of the normalising and permuting graphs of a group when the group is finite and soluble. In particular, we classify finite soluble groups with disconnected normalising graph. The main results shows that if a finite soluble group has connected normalising graph then this graph has diameter at most 6. Furthermore, this bound is tight. A corollary then presents the connectivity properties of the permuting graph.

Abstract:We describe the structure of finite groups with $\mathfrak{F}$-subnormal or self-normalizing primary cyclic subgroups when $\mathfrak{F}$ is a subgroup-closed saturate superradical formation containing all nilpotent groups. We prove that groups with absolutely $\mathfrak{F}$-subnormal or self-normalizing primary cyclic subgroups are soluble when $\mathfrak{F}$ is a subgroup-closed saturate formation containing all nilpotent groups.

Abstract:L.A. Shemetkov posed a Problem 9.74 in Kourovka Notebook to find all local formations $\mathfrak{F}$ of finite groups such that every finite minimal non-$\mathfrak{F}$-group is either a Schmidt group or a group of prime order. All known solutions to this problem are obtained under the assumption that every minimal non-$\mathfrak{F}$-group is soluble. Using the above mentioned solutions we present a polynomial in $n$ time check for a local formation $\mathfrak{F}$ with bounded $\pi(\mathfrak{F})$ to be a formation of soluble groups with the Shemtkov property where $n=\max \pi(\mathfrak{F})$.

Abstract:A remarkable result of Thompson states that a finite group is soluble if and only if its two-generated subgroups are soluble. This result has been generalized in numerous ways, and it is in the core of a wide area of research in the theory of groups, aiming for global properties of groups from local properties of two-generated (or more generally, $n$-generated) subgroups. We contribute an extension of Thompson's theorem from the perspective of factorized groups. More precisely, we study finite groups $G = AB$ with subgroups $A,\ B$ such that $\langle a, b\rangle$ is soluble for all $a \in A$ and $b \in B$. In this case, the group $G$ is said to be an $\cal S$-connected product of the subgroups $A$ and $B$ for the class $\cal S$ of all finite soluble groups. Our main theorem states that $G = AB$ is $\cal S$-connected if and only if $[A,B]$ is soluble. In the course of the proof we derive a result of own interest about independent primes regarding the soluble graph of almost simple groups.

Abstract:We give a condition for a hyperelliptic curve $C$ over a local field $K$ to be locally soluble, on the condition that $C$ obtains semistable reduction after a tame extension of $K$, and that the residue field $k$ is sufficiently large relative to the genus of the curve. The condition is presented in terms of the cluster picture of $C$, a combinatorial object which determines much of the local arithmetic of $C$.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of local Hilbert--Schmidt stability, motivated by the recent definition by Bradford of local permutation stability, and give examples of (non-residually finite) groups that are locally Hilbert--Schmidt stable but not Hilbert--Schmidt stable. For amenable groups, we provide a criterion for local Hilbert--Schmidt stability in terms of group characters, by analogy with the character criterion of Hadwin and Shulman for Hilbert--Schmidt stable amenable groups. Furthermore, we study the (very) flexible analogues of local Hilbert--Schmidt stability, and we prove several results analogous to the classical setting. Finally, we prove that infinite sofic, respectively hyperlinear, property (T) groups are never locally permutation stable, respectively locally Hilbert--Schmidt stable. This strengthens the result of Becker and Lubotzky for classical stability, and answers a question of Lubotzky.

Abstract:Abstract A finite group G is said to be a PST -group if every subnormal subgroup of G permutes with every Sylow subgroup of G . We shall discuss the normal structure of soluble PST -groups, mainly defining a local version of this concept. A deep study of the local structure turns out to be crucial for obtaining information about the global property. Moreover, a new approach to soluble PT -groups, i.e., soluble groups in which permutability is a transitive relation, follows naturally from our vision of PST -groups. Our techniques and results provide a unified point of view for T -groups, PT -groups, and PST -groups in the soluble universe, showing that the difference between these classes is quite simply their Sylow structure.
