Abstract:Light induced polarons in solid films of polymer-fullerene blends were studied by applying photoluminescence (PL), photo induced absorption (PIA) techniques as well as electron spin resonance (ESR). The materials used were poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly-[2-methoxy, 5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy) phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) as donors. As acceptors we used [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester ([C60]PCBM) and various soluble C70-derivates: [C70]PCBM, diphenylmethano[70]fullerene oligoether (C70-DPM-OE), C70-DPM-OE2, and two fullerene dimers, C70-C70 and C60-C70 (all shown in figure 1). In all blends containing C70 we found typical signatures which were absent if [C60]PCBM was used as acceptor. Light-induced ESR revealed signals at g>=2.005, which we previously assigned to an electron localized on the C70 cage, the PIA measurements showed a new sub-bandgap absorption band at 0.92 eV, which we correspondingly ascribe to C70 radical anions formed in the course of photoinduced electron transfer from donor to acceptor.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to understand the spectral characteristics of photo - generated radical anions in polymer - [C70] fullerene bulk heterojunctions, especially in the photoelectric conversion process in organic solar cells (OSC). Specifically, the authors focus on the following points: 1. **Research on photo - induced charge - separation states**: - The photophysical properties in different mixtures of polymers and [C70] fullerene derivatives were studied, especially photo - induced absorption (PIA) and electron spin resonance (ESR) signals. - Through these techniques, the authors attempted to reveal the formation and characteristics of photo - generated radical anions. 2. **Discovery and assignment of new absorption peaks**: - In the photo - induced absorption experiment, the authors discovered a new sub - band - gap absorption peak (0.92 eV). This peak appears in the mixture containing [C70], but does not exist when [C60]PCBM is used as the acceptor. - The authors attributed this new absorption peak to the negative radical anion on [C70] fullerene. 3. **Analysis of ESR signals**: - Through ESR experiments, the authors discovered spin signals related to [C70], which are manifested as shoulder peaks with g - values greater than 2.005. - These ESR signals further confirm the existence of negative radical anions on [C70] fullerene. 4. **Comparison of the behaviors of different material systems**: - By comparing different combinations of polymers and fullerene derivatives, the authors excluded the influence of side chains and other factors on the new absorption peak, and confirmed that these characteristics indeed originate from the radical anions on [C70] fullerene. ### Summary The main purpose of this study is to study in detail the photo - generated radical anions in polymer - [C70] fullerene mixtures by spectroscopic means (such as PIA and ESR) and confirm the spectral characteristics of these radical anions. This helps to gain a deeper understanding of the charge - separation and - transfer mechanisms in organic solar cells, thereby providing theoretical support for improving their energy - conversion efficiency.
