Abstract:The formula-evaluation problem is defined recursively. A formula's evaluation is the evaluation of a gate, the inputs of which are themselves independent formulas. Despite this pure recursive structure, the problem is combinatorially difficult for classical computers. A quantum algorithm is given to evaluate formulas over any finite boolean gate set. Provided that the complexities of the input subformulas to any gate differ by at most a constant factor, the algorithm has optimal query complexity. After efficient preprocessing, it is nearly time optimal. The algorithm is derived using the span program framework. It corresponds to the composition of the individual span programs for each gate in the formula. Thus the algorithm's structure reflects the formula's recursive structure.

Quantum circuits for floating-point arithmetic

Abstract:Quantum algorithms to solve practical problems in quantum chemistry, materials science, and matrix inversion often involve a significant amount of arithmetic operations which act on a superposition of inputs. These have to be compiled to a set of fault-tolerant low-level operations and throughout this translation process, the compiler aims to come close to the Pareto-optimal front between the number of required qubits and the depth of the resulting circuit. In this paper, we provide quantum circuits for floating-point addition and multiplication which we find using two vastly different approaches. The first approach is to automatically generate circuits from classical Verilog implementations using synthesis tools and the second is to generate and optimize these circuits by hand. We compare our two approaches and provide evidence that floating-point arithmetic is a viable candidate for use in quantum computing, at least for typical scientific applications, where addition operations usually do not dominate the computation. All our circuits were constructed and tested using the software tools LIQ$Ui|\rangle{}$ and RevKit.

Abstract:Shannon proved that almost all Boolean functions require a circuit of size $\Theta(2^n/n)$. We prove a quantum analog of this classical result. Unlike in the classical case the number of quantum circuits of any fixed size that we allow is uncountably infinite. Our main tool is a classical result in real algebraic geometry bounding the number of realizable sign conditions of any finite set of real polynomials in many variables.

Abstract:Many quantum algorithms make use of oracles which evaluate classical functions on a superposition of inputs. In order to facilitate implementation, testing, and resource estimation of such algorithms, we present quantum circuits for evaluating functions that are often encountered in the quantum algorithm literature. This includes Gaussians, hyperbolic tangent, sine/cosine, inverse square root, arcsine, and exponentials. We use insights from classical high-performance computing in order to optimize our circuits and implement a quantum software stack module which allows to automatically generate circuits for evaluating piecewise smooth functions in the computational basis. Our circuits enable more detailed cost analyses of various quantum algorithms, allowing to identify concrete applications of future quantum computing devices. Furthermore, our resource estimates may guide future research aiming to reduce the costs or even the need for arithmetic in the computational basis altogether.

Abstract:Quantum logic gates provide fundamental examples of conditional quantum dynamics. They could form the building blocks of general quantum information processing systems which have recently been shown to have many interesting nonclassical properties. We describe a simple quantum logic gate, the quantum controlled-NOT, and analyze some of its applications. We discuss two possible physical realizations of the gate, one based on Ramsey atomic interferometry and the other on the selective driving of optical resonances of two subsystems undergoing a dipole-dipole interaction.

Abstract:Synthesis of quaternary quantum circuits involves basic quaternary gates and logic operations in the quaternary quantum domain. In this paper, we propose new projection operations and quaternary logic gates for synthesizing quaternary logic functions. We also demonstrate the realization of the proposed gates using basic quantum quaternary operations. We then employ our synthesis method to design of quaternary adder and some benchmark circuits. Our results in terms of circuit cost, are better than the existing works.

Abstract:Implementing quantum algorithms on realistic devices requires translating high-level global operations into sequences of hardware-native logic gates, a process known as quantum compiling. Physical limitations, such as constraints in connectivity and gate alphabets, often result in unacceptable implementation costs. To enable successful near-term applications, it is crucial to optimize compilation by exploiting the capabilities of existing hardware. Here we implement a resource-efficient construction for a quantum version of AND logic that can reduce the compilation overhead, enabling the execution of key quantum circuits. On a high-scalability superconducting quantum processor, we demonstrate low-depth synthesis of high-fidelity generalized Toffoli gates with up to 8 qubits and Grover's search algorithm in a search space of up to 64 entries. Our experimental demonstration illustrates a scalable and widely applicable approach to implementing quantum algorithms, bringing more meaningful quantum applications on noisy devices within reach.

Abstract:Quantum algorithms for the analysis of Boolean functions have received a lot of attention over the last few years. The algebraic normal form (ANF) of a linear Boolean function can be recovered by using the Bernstein–Vazirani (BV) algorithm. No research has been carried out on quantum algorithms for learning the ANF of general Boolean functions. In this paper, quantum algorithms for learning the ANF of quadratic Boolean functions are studied. We draw a conclusion about the influences of variables on quadratic functions, so that the BV algorithm can be run on them. We study the functions obtained by inversion and zero-setting of some variables in the quadratic function and show the construction of their quantum oracle. We introduce the concept of “club” to group variables that appear in quadratic terms and study the properties of clubs. Furthermore, we propose a bunch of algorithms for learning the full ANF of quadratic Boolean functions. The most efficient algorithm, among those we propose, provides an O ( n ) speedup over the classical one, and the number of queries is independent of the degenerate variables.
Heuristics for Quantum Compiling with a Continuous Gate Set

Abstract:We present an algorithm for compiling arbitrary unitaries into a sequence of gates native to a quantum processor. As accurate CNOT gates are hard for the foreseeable Noisy- Intermediate-Scale Quantum devices era, our A* inspired algorithm attempts to minimize their count, while accounting for connectivity. We discuss the search strategy together with metrics to expand the solution frontier. For a workload of circuits with complexity appropriate for the NISQ era, we produce solutions well within the best upper bounds published in literature and match or exceed hand tuned implementations, as well as other existing synthesis alternatives. In particular, when comparing against state-of-the-art available synthesis packages we show 2.4x average (up to 5.3x) reduction in CNOT count. We also show how to re-target the algorithm for a different chip topology and native gate set, while obtaining similar quality results. We believe that empirical tools like ours can facilitate algorithmic exploration, gate set discovery for quantum processor designers, as well as providing useful optimization blocks within the quantum compilation tool-chain.

Abstract:This thesis consists of two parts. The first part is about how quantum theory can be recovered from first principles, while the second part is about the application of diagrammatic reasoning, specifically the ZX-calculus, to practical problems in quantum computing. The main results of the first part include a reconstruction of quantum theory from principles related to properties of sequential measurement and a reconstruction based on properties of pure maps and the mathematics of effectus theory. It also includes a detailed study of JBW-algebras, a type of infinite-dimensional Jordan algebra motivated by von Neumann algebras. In the second part we find a new model for measurement-based quantum computing, study how measurement patterns in the one-way model can be simplified and find a new algorithm for extracting a unitary circuit from such patterns. We use these results to develop a circuit optimisation strategy that leads to a new normal form for Clifford circuits and reductions in the T-count of Clifford+T circuits.

Abstract:Quantum algorithms are a promising framework for a proper treatment of Feynman loop integrals due to the existence of a manifestly causal representation scenario. Particularly, unfolding causal configurations of multiloop Feynman diagrams is understood as querying \textit{directed acyclic graph} (DAG) configurations of undirected graphs in graph theory. In this paper we present a quantum algorithm for querying causality of multiloop Feynman diagrams using an ingenious change in the logic of the design of the oracle operator. The construction of the quantum oracle is surprisingly based exclusively on multicontrolled Toffoli gates and XNOT gates. The efficiency of the algorithm is evaluated performing a comparison with a quantum algorithm based on binary clauses. Additionally, we explicitly analise several three-, four- and five-eloop topologies, which have not been previously explored due to their higher complexity.

Abstract:This research applies concepts from algorithmic probability to Boolean and quantum combinatorial logic circuits. A tutorial-style introduction to states and various notions of the complexity of states are presented. Thereafter, the probability of states in the circuit model of computation is defined. Classical and quantum gate sets are compared to select some characteristic sets. The reachability and expressibility in a space-time-bounded setting for these gate sets are enumerated and visualized. These results are studied in terms of computational resources, universality and quantum behavior. The article suggests how applications like geometric quantum machine learning, novel quantum algorithm synthesis and quantum artificial general intelligence can benefit by studying circuit probabilities.

Abstract:We describe a practical method of constructing quantum combinational logic circuits with basic quantum logic gates such as NOT and general $n$-bit Toffoli gates. This method is useful to find the quantum circuits for evaluating logic functions in the form most appropriate for implementation on a given quantum computer. The rules to get the most efficient circuit are utilized best with the aid of a Karnaugh map. It is explained which rules of using a Karnaugh map are changed due to the difference between the quantum and classical logic circuits.

A Comprehensive Study of Quantum Arithmetic Circuits

Abstract:In recent decades, the field of quantum computing has experienced remarkable progress. This progress is marked by the superior performance of many quantum algorithms compared to their classical counterparts, with Shor's algorithm serving as a prominent illustration. Quantum arithmetic circuits, which are the fundamental building blocks in numerous quantum algorithms, have attracted much attention. Despite extensive exploration of various designs in the existing literature, researchers remain keen on developing novel designs and improving existing ones. In this review article, we aim to provide a systematically organized and easily comprehensible overview of the current state-of-the-art in quantum arithmetic circuits. Specifically, this study covers fundamental operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and modular exponentiation. We delve into the detailed quantum implementations of these prominent designs and evaluate their efficiency considering various objectives. We also discuss potential applications of presented arithmetic circuits and suggest future research directions.

Abstract:Implementing a quantum algorithm on a NISQ device has several challenges that arise from the fact that such devices are noisy and have limited quantum resources. Thus, various factors contributing to the depth and width as well as to the noise of an implementation of an algorithm must be understood in order to assess whether an implementation will execute successfully on a given NISQ device. In this contribution, we discuss these factors and their impact on algorithm implementations. Especially, we will cover state preparation, oracle expansion, connectivity, circuit rewriting, and readout: these factors are very often ignored when presenting an algorithm but they are crucial when implementing such an algorithm on near-term quantum computers. Our contribution will help developers in charge of realizing algorithms on such machines in (i) achieving an executable implementation, and (ii) assessing the success of their implementation on a given machine.

Abstract:Efficient ways to prepare fermionic ground states on quantum computers are in high demand and different techniques have been developed over the last years. Despite having a vast set of methods, it is still unclear which method performs well for which system. In this work, we combine interpretable circuit designs with an effective basis approach in order to optimize a multiconfigurational valence bond wavefunction. Based on selected model systems, we show how this leads to explainable performance. We demonstrate that the developed methodology outperforms related methods in terms of the size of the effective basis as well as individual quantum resources for the involved circuits.

We give a list of equivalence rules which can help in the analysis and design of quantum circuits. As example applications we study quantum teleportation and dense coding protocols in terms of a simple XOR swapping circuit and give an intuitive picture of a basic gate teleportation circuit.

Abstract:Because it has the ability to avoid energy losses and the possibility to solve some exponentially hard problems in polynomial time, quantum computation is getting more and more attention. Multi-valued logic for quantum computing has shown practical advantages for scaling up a quantum computer. In this paper, some reversible logic gates for the multi-valued quantum logic and some synthesis methods for reversible logic are introduced, including the Cosine-Sine decomposition and the evolutionary quantum logic synthesis.

Abstract:We propose a novel variational method for solving the sub-graph isomorphism problem on a gate-based quantum computer. The method relies (1) on a new representation of the adjacency matrices of the underlying graphs, which requires a number of qubits that scales logarithmically with the number of vertices of the graphs; and (2) on a new ansatz that can efficiently probe the permutation space. Simulations are then presented to showcase the approach on graphs up to 16 vertices, whereas, given the logarithmic scaling, the approach could be applied to realistic sub-graph isomorphism problem instances in the medium term.
