Abstract:In this paper, we present new families of quantum channels for which corresponding minimum output Rényi $p$-entropy is not additive. Our manuscript is motivated by the results of Grudka et al., J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 43 425304 and we focus on channels characterized by both extensions and subspaces of the antisymmetric subspace in $\mathbb{C}^d \otimes \mathbb{C}^d$, which exhibit additivity breaking for $p>2$.

Abstract:The problem of additivity of the Minimum Output Entropy is of fundamental importance in Quantum Information Theory (QIT). It was solved by Hastings in the one-shot case, by exhibiting a pair of random quantum channels. However, the initial motivation was arguably to understand regularized quantities and there was so far no way to solve additivity questions in the regularized case. The purpose of this paper is to give a solution to this problem. Specifically, we exhibit a pair of quantum channels which unearths additivity violation of the regularized minimum output entropy. Unlike previously known results in the one-shot case, our construction is non-random, infinite dimensional and in the commuting-operator setup. The commuting-operator setup is equivalent to the tensor-product setup in the finite dimensional case for this problem, but their difference in infinite dimensional setting has attracted substantial attention and legitimacy recently in QIT with the celebrated resolutions of Tsirelson's and Connes embedding problem. Likewise, it is not clear that our approach works in the finite dimensional setup. Our strategy of proof relies on developing a variant of the Haagerup inequality optimized for a product of free groups.

Abstract:We prove that the minimal Renyi entropy of order 2 (RE2) output of a positive-partial-transpose(PPT)-inducing channel joint to an arbitrary other channel is equal to the sum of the minimal RE2 output of the individual channels. PPT-inducing channels are channels with a Choi matrix which is bound entangled or separable. The techniques used can be easily recycled to prove additivity for some non-PPT-inducing channels such as the depolarizing and transpose depolarizing channels, though not all known additive channels. We explicitly make the calculations for generalized Werner-Holevo channels as an example of both the scope and limitations of our techniques.

Abstract:We investigate the Rényi entropy of independent sums of integer valued random variables through Fourier theoretic means, and give sharp comparisons between the variance and the Rényi entropy, for Poisson-Bernoulli variables. As applications we prove that a discrete ``min-entropy power'' is super additive on independent variables up to a universal constant, and give new bounds on an entropic generalization of the Littlewood-Offord problem that are sharp in the ``Poisson regime''.

Abstract:It is known that the additivity conjecture of Holevo capacity, output minimum entoropy, and the entanglement of formation (EoF), are equivalent with each other. Among them, the output minimum entropy is simplest, and hence many researchers are focusing on this quantity. Here, we suggest yet another entanglement measure, whose strong superadditivity and additivity are equivalent to the additivity of the quantities mentioned above. This quantity is as simple as the output minimum entropy, and in existing proofs of additivity conjecture of the output minimum entropy for the specific examples, they are essentially proving the strong superadditivity of this quantity.

Abstract:We show that for log-concave real random variables with fixed variance the Shannon differential entropy is minimized for an exponential random variable. We apply this result to derive upper bounds on capacities of additive noise channels with log-concave noise. We also improve constants in the reverse entropy power inequalities for log-concave random variables.

Abstract:We investigate minimum output (Rényi) entropy of qubit channels and unital quantum channels. We obtain an exact formula for the minimum output entropy of qubit channels, and bounds for unital quantum channels. Interestingly, our bounds depend only on the operator norm of the matrix representation of the channels on the space of trace-less Hermitian operators. Moreover, since these bounds respect tensor products, we get bounds for the capacity of unital quantum channels, which is saturated by the Werner-Holevo channel. Furthermore, we construct an orthonormal basis, besides the Gell-Mann basis, for the space of trace-less Hermitian operators by using discrete Weyl operators. We apply our bounds to discrete Weyl covariant channels with this basis, and find new examples in which the minimum output Rényi $2$-entropy is additive.

On the Completely Monotone Conjecture for Rényi Entropy

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize the completely monotone conjecture from Shannon entropy to the Rényi entropy. We confirm this conjecture for the order of derivative up to $3$, when the order of Rényi entropy is in certain regimes. We also investigate concavity of Rényi entropy power and the completely monotone conjecture for Tsallis entropy. We observe that the completely monotone conjecture is true for Tsallis entropy of order $2$. Our proofs in this paper are based on the techniques of integration-by-parts and sum-of-squares.

Abstract:The minimum entropy output is computed for rotationally invariant quantum channels acting on spin-1/2 and spin-1 systems. For the case of two parallel such channels and initial entangled (singlet) state the entropy of the output is higher then the doubled minimal entropy output of the single channel. This gives a certain moral support to the additivity hypothesis. Another related simple function of the channel (minimum entropy gain) is shown to be additive in general.

Abstract:We prove that the relative entropy of entanglement is additive when \emph{at least one of the two states} belongs to some specific class. We show that these classes include bipartite pure, maximally correlated, GHZ, Bell diagonal, isotropic, and generalized Dicke states. Previously, additivity was established only if \textit{both} states belong to the same class. Moreover, we extend these results to entanglement monotones based on the $\alpha$-$z$ Rényi relative entropy. Notably, this family of monotones includes also the generalized robustness of entanglement and the geometric measure of entanglement. In addition, we prove that any monotone based on a quantum relative entropy is not additive for general states. We also compute closed-form expressions of the monotones for bipartite pure, Bell diagonal, isotropic, generalized Werner, generalized Dicke, and maximally correlated Bell diagonal states. Our results rely on developing a method that allows us to recast the initial convex optimization problem into a simpler linear one. Even though we mostly focus on entanglement theory, we expect that some of our technical results could be useful in investigating more general convex optimization problems.

Abstract:In this short report, we give some new entropy inequalities based on Rényi relative entropy and the observation made by Berta {\em et al} [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1403.6102" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1403.6102">arXiv:1403.6102</a>]. These inequalities obtained extends some well-known entropy inequalities. We also obtain a condition under which a tripartite operator becomes a Markov state.

Generalized Rényi entropy accumulation theorem and generalized quantum probability estimation

Abstract:The entropy accumulation theorem, and its subsequent generalized version, is a powerful tool in the security analysis of many device-dependent and device-independent cryptography protocols. However, it has the drawback that the finite-size bounds it yields are not necessarily optimal, and furthermore it relies on the construction of an affine min-tradeoff function, which can often be challenging to construct optimally in practice. In this work, we address both of these challenges simultaneously by deriving a new entropy accumulation bound. Our bound yields significantly better finite-size performance, and can be computed as an intuitively interpretable convex optimization, without any specification of affine min-tradeoff functions. Furthermore, it can be applied directly at the level of Rényi entropies if desired, yielding fully-Rényi security proofs. Our proof techniques are based on elaborating on a connection between entropy accumulation and the frameworks of quantum probability estimation or $f$-weighted Rényi entropies, and in the process we obtain some new results with respect to those frameworks as well. In particular, those findings imply that our bounds apply to prepare-and-measure protocols without the virtual tomography procedures or repetition-rate restrictions previously required for entropy accumulation.

On an entropic analogue of additive energy

Abstract:Recent advances have linked various statements involving sumsets and cardinalities with corresponding statements involving sums of random variables and entropies. In this vein, this paper shows that the quantity $2{\bf H}\{X, Y\} - {\bf H}\{X+Y\}$ is a natural entropic analogue of the additive energy $E(A,B)$ between two sets. We develop some basic theory surrounding this quantity, and demonstrate its role in the proof of Tao's entropy variant of the Balog--Szemerédi--Gowers theorem. We examine the regime where entropic additive energy is small, and discuss a family of random variables related to Sidon sets. In finite fields, one can define an entropic multiplicative energy as well, and we formulate sum-product-type conjectures relating these two entropic energies.

Abstract:An "entropy increasing to the maximum" result analogous to the entropic central limit theorem (Barron 1986; Artstein et al. 2004) is obtained in the discrete setting. This involves the thinning operation and a Poisson limit. Monotonic convergence in relative entropy is established for general discrete distributions, while monotonic increase of Shannon entropy is proved for the special class of ultra-log-concave distributions. Overall we extend the parallel between the information-theoretic central limit theorem and law of small numbers explored by Kontoyiannis et al. (2005) and Harremoës et al.\ (2007, 2008). Ingredients in the proofs include convexity, majorization, and stochastic orders.

Abstract:Accounting for the non-normality of asset returns remains challenging in robust portfolio optimization. In this article, we tackle this problem by assessing the risk of the portfolio through the "amount of randomness" conveyed by its returns. We achieve this by using an objective function that relies on the exponential of Rényi entropy, an information-theoretic criterion that precisely quantifies the uncertainty embedded in a distribution, accounting for higher-order moments. Compared to Shannon entropy, Rényi entropy features a parameter that can be tuned to play around the notion of uncertainty. A Gram-Charlier expansion shows that it controls the relative contributions of the central (variance) and tail (kurtosis) parts of the distribution in the measure. We further rely on a non-parametric estimator of the exponential Rényi entropy that extends a robust sample-spacings estimator initially designed for Shannon entropy. A portfolio selection application illustrates that minimizing Rényi entropy yields portfolios that outperform state-of-the-art minimum variance portfolios in terms of risk-return-turnover trade-off.
