Abstract:Advances in embedded devices and wireless sensor networks have resulted in new and inexpensive health care solutions. This paper describes the implementation and the evaluation of a wireless body sensor system that monitors human physiological data at home. Specifically, a waist-mounted triaxial accelerometer unit is used to record human movements. Sampled data are transmitted using an IEEE 802.15.4 wireless transceiver to a data logger unit. The wearable sensor unit is light, small, and consumes low energy, which allows for inexpensive and unobtrusive monitoring during normal daily activities at home. The acceleration measurement tests show that it is possible to classify different human motion through the acceleration reading. The 802.15.4 wireless signal quality is also tested in typical home scenarios. Measurement results show that even with interference from nearby IEEE 802.11 signals and microwave ovens, the data delivery performance is satisfactory and can be improved by selecting an appropriate channel. Moreover, we found that the wireless signal can be attenuated by housing materials, home appliances, and even plants. Therefore, the deployment of wireless body sensor systems at home needs to take all these factors into consideration.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop and evaluate a wireless body - area sensor system for monitoring human physiological data at home. Specifically, this study uses a waist - worn tri - axial accelerometer unit to record human activities and transmits the sampled data to a data - recording unit through an IEEE 802.15.4 wireless transceiver. The main objectives of the study include: 1. **Achieve non - invasive continuous health monitoring**: The designed wireless sensor system needs to be lightweight, small - sized and low - power - consuming so as not to interfere with the normal life of users during daily activities. 2. **Classify different human movements**: By analyzing the recorded acceleration data, verify whether different body movements such as sitting - standing transitions, left - right rotations and walking can be distinguished. 3. **Evaluate the 802.15.4 wireless signal quality**: Test the quality of 802.15.4 wireless signals in a typical home environment, especially in the presence of interference from other wireless devices (such as IEEE 802.11 signals and microwave ovens), and the attenuation of signals by building materials, household appliances and plants, etc. Through these objectives, the study aims to provide an economical, simple and effective home health monitoring solution, especially suitable for the elderly and patients with chronic diseases.
