Abstract:We review a case study of a UI design project for a complete travel search engine system prototype for regular and corporate users. We discuss various usage scenarios, guidelines, and so for, and put them into a web-based prototype with screenshots and the like. We combined into our prototype the best features found at the time (2002) on most travel-like sites and added more to them as a part of our research. We conducted feasibility studies, review common design guidelines and Nelson's heuristics while constructing this work. The prototype is itself open-source, but has no backend functionality, as the focus is the user-centered design of such a system. While the prototype is mostly static, some dynamic activity is present through the use of PHP.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the problem of designing a user-friendly travel search engine interface to enhance the user's booking experience. Specifically, the paper addresses the problem through the following aspects: 1. **User Scenario Design**: The paper details the specific scenarios of different types of users (such as regular users, corporate users) when using the travel search engine, including booking flights, hotels, car rentals, etc. 2. **Interface Design**: The paper proposes various design guidelines to ensure the intuitiveness and ease of use of the user interface. For example, using colors, frames, and proximity to highlight grouping, and adopting interactive styles to prevent errors (such as country and city dropdown boxes). 3. **Shopping Cart Functionality**: The paper introduces the functionality of the shopping cart as a central repository, allowing users to conveniently manage and purchase multiple items. 4. **Corporate User Needs**: The paper pays special attention to the specific needs of corporate users, such as bulk booking, preference settings for different travelers, etc. 5. **Additional Features**: The paper also discusses some additional features, such as cruise booking, package booking, etc., to meet more diverse user needs. Overall, the paper aims to enhance the user experience and efficiency when using the travel search engine by optimizing the user interface and functionality design.
