Abstract:In this paper we characterize primitive branched coverings with minimal defect over the projective plane with respect to the properties decomposable and indecomposable. This minimality is achieved when the covering surface is also the projective plane, which corresponds to the last case to be solved. As a consequence, we have extended the family of realisations of branched coverings on the projective plane and established a type of generalisation of results on primitive permutation groups.

Abstract:William Thurston (1946-2012) gave a combinatorial characterization for generic branched self-coverings of the two-sphere by associating a planar graph to them <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760</a>. By generalizing the notion of local balancing, the author extends the Thurston result to encompass any branched covering of the two-sphere. As an application, we supply a lower bound for the number of equivalence classes of real rational functions for each given ramification profile. Shapiro Conjecture, now it is a theorem \cite{MR2552110}. The theorem version that we prove concerns generic rational functions, assuring that if all critical points of that function are real, then we can transform it into a rational map with real coefficients by post-composition with an automorphism of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{1}$. The proof we present is constructive and founded on elementary arguments.}

Abstract:For a branched cover between two closed orientable surfaces, the Riemann-Hurwitz formula relates the Euler characteristics of the surfaces, the total degree of the cover, and the total length of the partitions of the degree given by the local degrees at the preimages of the branching points. A very old problem asks whether a collection of partitions of an integer having the appropriate total length (that we call a candidate cover) always comes from some branched cover. The answer is known to be in the affirmative whenever the candidate base surface is not the 2-sphere, while for the 2-sphere exceptions do occur. A long-standing conjecture however asserts that when the candidate degree is a prime number, a candidate cover is always realizable. In this paper we analyze the question from the point of view of the geometry of 2-orbifolds, and we provide strong supporting evidence for the conjecture. In particular, we exhibit three different sequences of candidate covers, indexed by their degree, such that for each sequence: (1) The degrees giving realizable covers have asymptotically zero density in the naturals; (2) Each prime degree gives a realizable cover.

Abstract:We discuss how the fractional Dehn twist coefficient behaves under a fully ramified branched covering of an open book, and give applications to both topological and contact 3-manifolds. Among them, we show that non-right-veering closed braids represent virtually loose transverse links.

Abstract:Let N be the moduli space of stable rank 2 vector bundles on a smooth projective curve of genus g>1 with fixed odd determinant. With Sebastian Torres, we previously found a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the bounded derived category of N into bounded derived categories of symmetric powers of the curve and, possibly, a phantom block. In this work, we employ the theory of weaving patterns to eliminate the possibility of a phantom, completing the proof of the decomposition conjectured by Narasimhan and, independently, by Belmans, Galkin, and Mukhopadhyay.

Abstract:We consider closed orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds which are cyclic branched coverings of the 3-sphere, with branching set being a two-bridge knot (or link). We establish two-sided linear bounds depending on the order of the covering for the Matveev complexity of the covering manifold. The lower estimate uses the hyperbolic volume and results of Cao-Meyerhoff and Gueritaud-Futer (who recently improved previous work of Lackenby), while the upper estimate is based on an explicit triangulation, which also allows us to give a bound on the Delzant T-invariant of the fundamental group of the manifold.

Abstract:We show that the description of the holomorphic $\mathbb C \mathrm P^1$-bundle associated to a holomorphic projective structure on a Riemann surface in terms of the principal bundle of projective $2$-frames extends very well to the setting of branched projective structures. This generalization reveals a space of parameters, each of which is associated to a branching class. The space of branched projective structures with a given branching class appears as a space of connections on a given $\mathbb C \mathrm P^1$-bundle, and is consequently an affine space. Finally, we study the map which to a branching class associates the corresponding $\mathbb C \mathrm P^1$-bundle with section.

Abstract:In this paper we consider completed coverings that are branched coverings in the sense of Fox. For completed coverings between PL manifolds we give a characterization of the existence of a monodromy representation and the existence of a locally compact monodromy representation. These results stem from a characterization for the discreteness of a completed normal covering. We also show that completed coverings admitting a monodromy representations are discrete and that the image of the branch set is closed.

Abstract:We show that the moduli space of marked branched projective structures of genus g and branching degree n is a complex analytic space. In the case g > 1 we show that this moduli space is of dimension 6 g - 6 + n and we characterize its singular points in terms of their monodromy. We introduce a notion of branching class, that is an infinitesimal description of branched projective structures at the branched points. We show that the space of marked branching classes of genus g and branching degree n is a complex manifold. We show that if n < 2g-2 the space of branched projective structures is an affine bundle over the space of branching classes, while if n > 4g-4 the former is an analytic subspace of the latter.

Obstructions to semiorthogonal decompositions for singular projective varieties II: Representation theory

Abstract:We show that odd-dimensional projective varieties with tilting objects and only ADE-hypersurface singularities are nodal, i.e. they only have $A_1$-singularities. This is a very special case of more general obstructions to the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions for projective Gorenstein varieties. More precisely, for many isolated hypersurface singularities, we show that Kuznetsov-Shinder's categorical absorptions of singularities cannot contain tilting objects. The key idea is to compare singularity categories of projective varieties to singularity categories of finite-dimensional associative Gorenstein algebras. The former often contain special generators, called cluster-tilting objects, which typically have loops and $2$-cycles in their quivers. In contrast, quivers of cluster-tilting objects in the latter categories, can never have loops or $2$-cycles.

Abstract:A degree $d$ genus $g$ cover of the complex projective line by a smooth curve $C$ yields a vector bundle on the projective line by pushforward of the structure sheaf. Which bundles are possible? Equivalently, which $\mathbb{P}^{d-2}$-bundles over $\mathbb{P}^1$ contain such covers? (In the language of many previous papers: what are the scrollar invariants of the cover?) We give a complete answer in degree $4$, which exhibits the expected pathologies. We describe a polytope (one per degree) which we propose gives the complete answer for primitive covers, i.e. covers that don't factor through a subcover. We show that all such bundles (for primitive covers) lie in this polytope, and that a ``positive proportion'' of the polytope arises from smooth covers. Moreover, we show the necessity of the primitivity assumption. Finally, we show that the map from the Hurwitz space of smooth covers to the space of bundles is not flat (for $d>3$ and $g \gg_d 0$).

Abstract:The Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) is designed to gather the best and deepest multiwavelength data for studying the formation and evolution of galaxies and active galactic nuclei, the distribution of dark and luminous matter at high redshift, the cosmological parameters from distant supernovae, and the extragalactic background light. The program uses the most powerful space- and ground-based telescopes to cover two fields, each 10'x16', centered on the Hubble Deep Field North and the Chandra Deep Field South, already the sites of extensive observations from X-ray through radio wavelengths. GOODS incorporates 3.6-24 micron observations from a SIRTF Legacy Program, four-band ACS imaging from an HST Treasury Program, and extensive new ground-based imaging and spectroscopy. GOODS data products will be made available on a rapid time-scale, enabling community research on a wide variety of topics. Here we describe the project, emphasizing its application for studying the mass assembly history of galaxies.

Abstract:By employing methods from complex analysis and topology, we have established a criterion for the existence of specific types of branched covers between 2-spheres. This criterion generalizes the results previously obtained by Jiang (2004), Pervova-Petronio (2006), Zhu (2019), and Wei-Wu-Xu (2024). As an application of our findings, we introduce several new types of exceptional branching datum.

Abstract:By a construction of Berstein and Edmonds every proper branched cover f between manifolds is a factor of a branched covering orbit map from a locally connected and locally compact Hausdorff space called the monodromy space of f to the target manifold. For proper branched covers between 2-manifolds the monodromy space is known to be a manifold. We show that this does not generalize to dimension 3 by constructing a self-map of the 3-sphere for which the monodromy space is not a locally contractible space.

On the regularity of the structure of branched immersions

Abstract:We show the existence of some special coordinate systems for expressing maps with branch points. These coordinates allow obtaining an explicit representation formula of branch immersions and understanding the regularity of some fundamental elements in the theory of R. D. Gulliver, R. Osserman and H. L. Royden. For conformal maps, we prove that these coordinates exist with certain regularity if and only if the mean curvature vector extends and is in a particular Hölder space. In the general case, we characterize this type of coordinate system. Also, using these coordinates, we study the regularity and behavior of curvatures near branch points.

Abstract:Branched coverings boast a rich history, ranging from the ramification of Riemann surfaces to the realization of 3-manifolds as coverings branched over knots and spanning both geometric topology and algebraic geometry. This work delves into branched coverings "à la Fox" of ( G , X )-manifolds, encompassing three main avenues: Firstly, we introduce a comprehensive class of singular ( G , X )-manifolds, elucidating elementary theory paired with illustrative examples to showcase its efficacy and universality. Secondly, building on Montesinos' work, we revisit and augment the prevailing knowledge, formulating a Galois theory tailored for such branched coverings. This includes a detailed portrayal of the fiber above branching points. Lastly, we identify local attributes that guarantee the existence of developing maps for singular ( G , X )-manifolds within the branched coverings framework. Notably, we pinpoint conditions that ensure the existence of developing maps for these singular manifolds. This research proves especially pertinent for non-metric singular ( G , X )-manifolds like those of Lorentzian or projective nature, as discussed by Barbot, Bonsante, Suhyoung Choi, Danciger, Seppi, Schlenker, and the author, among others. While examples are sprinkled throughout, a standout application presented is a uniformization theorem "à la Mess" for singular locally Minkowski manifolds exhibiting BTZ-like singularities.

Abstract:Groups with a non-cyclic Sylow $p$-subgroup have too many representations over a field of characteristic~$p$ to describe them fully. A~natural question arises, whether the world of representations coming from algebraic varieties with a group action is as vast as the realm of all modular representations. In this article, we explore the possible ``building blocks'' (the indecomposable direct summands) of cohomologies of smooth projective curves with a group action. We show that usually there are infinitely many such possible summands. To prove this, we study a family of $\mathbb Z/p \times \mathbb Z/p$-covers and describe the cohomologies of the members of this family completely.

Abstract:Let $X$ be an Enriques surface. Using Beauville's result about the triviality of the Brauer map of $X$, we define a new involution on the category of coherent sheaves on the canonically covering K3 surface $\overline{X}$. We relate the fixed locus of this involution to certain Picard schemes of the noncommutative pair $(X,\mathcal{A})$, where $\mathcal{A}$ is an Azumaya algebra on $X$ defined by the nontrivial element in the Brauer group of $X$.
