Abstract:A remarkably successful program of parity-violating electron scattering experiments is providing new insight into the structure of the nucleon. Measurement of the vector form factors enables a definitive study of potential strange quark-antiquark contributions to the electromagnetic structure such as the magnetic moment and charge distribution. Recent experimental results have already indicated that effects of strangeness are much smaller than theoretically expected. In addition, the neutral axial form factor appears to display substantial corrections as one might expect from an anapole effect.

Abstract:Sixty years ago Gell-Mann introduced, with a striking sense of caution, a new fundamental layer in the structure of matter. He christened the associated particles 'quarks', a name borrowed from the psychedelic flood of words of James Joyce's novel Finnegans Wake. Independently and simultaneously, Zweig arrived at similar ideas. We outline the circumstances that led to the introduction of quarks.

Abstract:We extend our proposal that major universality classes of hadronic matter can be understood, and in favorable cases calculated, directly in the microscopic quark variables, to allow for a splitting between strange and light quark masses. A surprisingly simple but apparently viable picture emerges, featuring essentially three phases, distinguished by whether strangeness is conserved (standard nuclear matter), conserved modulo 2 (hypernuclear matter), or locked to color (color flavor locking). These are separated by sharp phase transitions. There is also, potentially, a quark phase matching hadronic {ital K} condensation. The smallness of the secondary gap in two-flavor color superconductivity corresponds to the disparity between the primary dynamical energy scales of QCD and the much smaller energy scales of nuclear physics. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract:Intrinsic strangeness contributions to low-energy strange quark matrix elements of the nucleon are modelled using kaon loops and meson-nucleon vertex functions taken from nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-hyperon scattering. A comparison with pion loop contributions to the nucleon electromagnetic (EM) form factors indicates the presence of significant SU(3)-breaking in the mean-square charge radii. As a numerical consequence, the kaon loop contribution to the mean square Dirac strangeness radius is significantly smaller than could be observed with parity-violating elastic ep experiments planned for CEBAF, while the contribution to the Sachs radius is large enough to be observed with PV electron scattering from (0^+,0) nuclei. Kaon loops generate a strange magnetic moment of the same scale as the isoscalar EM magnetic moment and a strange axial vector form factor having roughly one-third magnitude extracted from nu p/nubar p elastic scattering. In the chiral limit, the loop contribution to the fraction of the nucleon's scalar density arising from strange quarks has roughly the same magnitude as the value extracted from analyses of Sigma_{\pi N}. The importance of satisfying the Ward-Takahashi Identity, not obeyed by previous calculations, is also illustrated, and the sensitivity of results to input parameters is analyzed.

Abstract:Analyses of the three valence-quark bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory predict that the nucleon may be understood primarily as a Borromean bound-state, in which binding arises mainly from two separate effects. One originates in non-Abelian facets of QCD that are expressed in the strong running coupling and generate confined but strongly-correlated colour-antitriplet diquark clusters in both the scalar–isoscalar and pseudovector–isotriplet channels. That attraction is magnified by quark exchange associated with diquark breakup and reformation. Diquark clustering is driven by the same mechanism which dynamically breaks chiral symmetry in the Standard Model. It has numerous observable consequences, the complete elucidation of which requires a framework that also simultaneously expresses the running of the coupling and masses in the strong interaction. Planned experiments are capable of validating this picture.

Abstract:It is shown that the hole in the centre of 3 H , 3 He and 4 He , the neutron halos in nuclei, the α- and other clustering effects in nuclei and the nuclear molecules all basically arise due to the same underlying effect. We shall show that all these ground state properties of nuclei are manifestations of quark effects. The role of triton clustering in very neutron rich nuclei is emphasized. All these require the concept of hidden colour states which arise from confinement ideas of QCD for the multi-quark systems. This provides a comprehensive understanding of diverse nuclear effects and makes unique predictions.

On Quark Substructures in an Inspired Unified Model

Abstract:Motivated by the growing attention devoted to the Quantum Chromodynamics sector of the Standard Model, and the recent observations of non-standard hadronic states, a possible substructure of quarks $q_{f}\equiv C_{ij}|k_{i}k_{j}\rangle $ in terms of four colorless bound particles $% k_{i(=0,\ldots,3)}$ "hyperquarks" is investigated in a $SO(10)$-inspired unified model. This aims to define a subtle structure of matter as well as an explanation of some particularities of quarks. Precisley, these hyperquarks $k_{i}$ are bound by a $SU(3)_{h}$ "hyperstrong force" under which they are assumed to be charged. Exploiting certain known data, the masses and the charges of such fundamental particles are discussed along with the emerged four extra quarks $q_{f}\equiv \delta_{ii}|k_{i}k_{i}\rangle $ and three hyperweak bosons $W_{h}$.

Abstract:In this conference proceeding, we review important theoretical developments related to the production of strangeness in astrophysics. This includes its effects in supernova explosions, neutron stars, and compact-star mergers. We also discuss in detail how the presence of net strangeness affects the deconfinement to quark matter, expected to take place at large densities and/or temperatures. We conclude that a complete description of dense matter containing hyperons and strange quarks is fundamental for the understanding of modern high-energy astrophysics.

Abstract:Does deconfined cold quark matter occur in nature? This is currently one of the fundamental open questions in nuclear astrophysics. In these proceedings, I review the current state-of-the-art techniques to address this question in a model-agnostic manner, by synthesizing inputs from astrophysical observations of neutron stars and their binary mergers, and first-principles calculations within nuclear and particle theory. I highlight recent improvements in perturbative calculations in asymptotically dense cold quark matter, as well as compelling evidence for a conformalizing transition within the cores of massive neutron stars.

Abstract:Forty years ago, Witten suggested that dark matter could be composed of macroscopic clusters of strange quark matter. This idea was very popular for several years, but it dropped out of fashion once lattice QCD calculations indicated that the confinement/deconfinement transition, at small baryonic chemical potential, is not first order, which seemed to be a crucial requirement in order to produce large clusters of quarks. Here we revisit both the conditions under which strangelets can be produced in the Early Universe and the many phenomenological implications of their existence. Most of the paper discusses the limits on their mass distribution and a possible and simple scheme for their production. Finally, we discuss the most promising techniques to detect this type of objects.

Abstract:In the early 1960s particle physicists found that they had wandered into a jungle. They were confronted by a bewildering array of particles called hadrons that did not appear to follow any discernible pattern. Murray Gell-Mann eventually tamed this hadronic jungle by proposing that all hadrons are made up of combinations of more fundamental particles called quarks: mesons contain a quark and an antiquark, while baryons contain three quarks. Some physicists found this bold hypothesis difficult to swallow at first, but for four decades these two basic "body plans"have been more or less adequate to accommodate the many new hadrons that have turned up in experiments.

Abstract:I present an introduction to the field of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) with emphasis on nucleon spin structure and perturbative methods. After a somewhat comprehensive overview of perturbative QCD, including the systematics of renormalization, I introduce deeply-inelastic scattering and deeply-virtual Compton scattering along with the nonperturbative distribution functions appearing in these processes. I show how these processes can be used to extract the distribution of longitudinal spin of nucleons, and briefly discuss the complications associated with transverse spin components. There are five appendices which accompany this work, discussing topics ranging from canonical field quantization to dimensional regularization to the structure of several important Lie groups. These appendices are meant to give the reader a certain basic understanding of some of the mathematical details underlying the main text, as well as provide a useful reference. This work was submitted in a slightly different form to the University of Maryland at College Park in partial completion of the requirements for a doctor of philosophy in physics, received August 2000.

Abstract:We explain how the emergent phenomenon of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking ensures that Poincaré covariant analyses of the three valence–quark scattering problem in continuum quantum field theory yield a picture of the nucleon as a Borromean bound-state, in which binding arises primarily through the sum of two separate contributions. One involves aspects of the non-Abelian character of Quantum Chromodynamics that are expressed in the strong running coupling and generate tight, dynamical color-antitriplet quark–quark correlations in the scalar–isoscalar and pseudovector-isotriplet channels. This attraction is magnified by quark exchange associated with diquark breakup and reformation, which is required in order to ensure that each valence–quark participates in all diquark correlations to the complete extent allowed by its quantum numbers. Combining these effects, we arrive at a properly antisymmetrised Faddeev wave function for the nucleon and calculate, e.g. the flavor-separated versions of the Dirac and Pauli form factors and the proton’s leading-twist parton distribution amplitude. We conclude that available data and planned experiments are capable of validating the proposed picture.
Penta-quark States with Strangeness, Hidden Charm and Beauty

Abstract:The classical quenched quark models with three constituent quarks provide a good description for the baryon spatial ground states, but fail to reproduce the spectrum of baryon excited states. More and more evidences suggest that unquenched effects with multi-quark dynamics are necessary ingredients to solve the problem. Several new hyperon resonances reported recently could fit in the picture of penta-quark states. Based on this picture, some new hyperon excited states were predicted to exist; meanwhile with extension from strangeness to charm and beauty, super-heavy narrow $N^*$ and $\Lambda^*$ resonances with hidden charm or beauty were predicted to be around 4.3 and 11 GeV, respectively. Recently, two of such $N^*$ with hidden charm might have been observed by the LHCb experiment. More of those states are expected to be observed in near future. This opens a new window in order to study hadronic dynamics for the multi-quark states.

Abstract:The fundamental theory of the strong interaction -- quantum chromodynamics (QCD) -- provides the foundational framework with which to describe and understand the key properties of atomic nuclei. A deep understanding of the explicit role of quarks and gluons in nuclei remains elusive however, as these effects have thus far been well-disguised by confinement effects in QCD which are encapsulated by a successful description in terms of effective hadronic degrees of freedom. The observation of the EMC effect has provided an enduring indication for explicit QCD effects in nuclei, and points to the medium modification of the bound protons and neutrons in the nuclear medium. Understanding the EMC effect is a major challenge for modern nuclear physics, and several key questions remain, such as understanding its flavor, spin, and momentum dependence. This manuscript provides a contemporary snapshot of our understanding of the role of QCD in nuclei and outlines possible pathways in experiment and theory that will help deepen our understanding of nuclei in the context of QCD.
