We apply them to find integrable partial difference equations contained in a class of equations obtained by the multiple scale analysis of the general multilinear dispersive difference equation defined on the square.

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to tackle integrability problem for evolutionary differential-difference equations (D$\Delta$Es) on free associative algebras, also referred to as nonabelian D$\Delta$Es. This approach enables us to derive necessary integrability conditions, determine the integrability of a given equation, and make progress in the classification of integrable nonabelian D$\Delta$Es. This work involves establishing symbolic representations for the nonabelian difference algebra, difference operators, and formal series, as well as introducing a novel quasi-local extension for the algebra of formal series within the context of symbolic representations. Applying this formalism, we solve the classification problem of integrable skew-symmetric quasi-linear nonabelian equations of orders $(-1,1)$, $(-2,2)$, and $(-3,3)$, consequently revealing some new equations in the process.

Abstract:We consider higher symmetries and operator symmetries of linear partial differential equations. The higher symmetries form a Lie algebra, and operator ones form an associative algebra. The relationship between these symmetries is established. We show that symmetries of linear equations sometimes generate symmetries of nonlinear ones. New symmetries of two-dimensional stationary equations of gas dynamics are found.

Abstract:For a field k with an automorphism σ and a derivation δ, we introduce the notion of Liouvillian solutions of linear difference–differential systems {σ(Y)=AY,δ(Y)=BY} over k and characterize the existence of Liouvillian solutions in terms of the Galois group of the systems. In the forthcoming paper, we will propose an algorithm for deciding if linear difference–differential systems of prime order have Liouvillian solutions.

Abstract:The isospectral set of the Dirac matrix D=d+d* consists of orthogonal Q for which Q* D Q is an equivalent Dirac matrix. It can serve as the symmetry of a finite geometry G. The symmetry is a subset of the orthogonal group or unitary group and isospectral Lax deformations produce commuting flows d/dt D=[B(g(D)),D] on this symmetry space. In this note, we remark that like in the Toda case, D_t=Q_t* D_0 Q_t with exp(-t g(D))=Q_t R_t solves the Lax system.

On Symmetries of Integrable Quadrilateral Equations

Abstract:In the paper, we describe a method for deriving generalized symmetries for a generic discrete quadrilateral equation that allows a Lax pair. Its symmetry can be interpreted as a flow along the tangent direction of its solution evolving with a Lie group parameter t. Starting from the spectral problem of the quadrilateral equation and assuming the eigenfunction evolves with the parameter t, one can obtain a differential-difference equation hierarchy, of which the flows are proved to be commuting symmetries of the quadrilateral equation. We prove this result by using the zero-curvature representations of these flows. As an example, we apply this method to derive symmetries for the lattice potential Korteweg–de Vries equation.

Auger Electron Cascades in Water and Ice

Abstract:Secondary electron cascades can induce significant ionisation in condensed matter due to electron-atom collisions. This is of interest in the context of diffraction and imaging using X-rays, where radiation damage is the main limiting factor for achieving high resolution data. Here we present new results on electron-induced damage on liquid water and ice, from the simulation of Auger electron cascades. We have compared our theoretical estimations to the available experimental data on elastic and inelastic electron-molecule interactions for water and found the theoretical results for elastic cross sections to be in very good agreement with experiment. As a result of the cascade we find that the average number of secondary electrons after 100 fs in ice is about 25, slightly higher than in water, where it is about 20. The difference in damage between ice and water is discussed in the context of sample handling for biomolecular systems.

Abstract:Lie symmetry analysis is one of the powerful tools to analyze nonlinear ordinary differential equations. We review the effectiveness of this method in terms of various symmetries. We present the method of deriving Lie point symmetries, contact symmetries, hidden symmetries, nonlocal symmetries, $\lambda$-symmetries, adjoint symmetries and telescopic vector fields of a second-order ordinary differential equation. We also illustrate the algorithm involved in each method by considering a nonlinear oscillator equation as an example. The connections between (i) symmetries and integrating factors and (ii) symmetries and integrals are also discussed and illustrated through the same example. The interconnections between some of the above symmetries, that is (i) Lie point symmetries and $\lambda$-symmetries and (ii) exponential nonlocal symmetries and $\lambda$-symmetries are also discussed. The order reduction procedure is invoked to derive the general solution of the second-order equation.

Abstract:In this article, we construct explicit meromorphic solutions of first order linear $q$-difference equations in the complex domain and we describe the location of all their zeros and poles. The homogeneous case leans on the study of four fundamental equations, providing the previous informations in the framework of entire or meromorphic coefficients. The inhomogeneous situation, which stems from the homogeneous one and two fundamental equations, is also described in detail. We also address the case of higher-order linear $q$-difference equations, using a classical factorization argument. All these results are illustrated by several examples.

Abstract:Symmetry is a powerful tool for finding analytical solutions to differential equations, both partial and ordinary, via the similarity variables or via the invariance of the equation under group transformations. It is the largest group of transformations that leaves the differential equation invariant. It is now known that this differential equation method plays the same role when it comes to the study of difference equations. Difference equations can be used to model various phenomena where the changes occur in discrete manner. The use of symmetries on recurrence equations, usually, leads to reductions of order and hence ease the process of finding their solutions. One of the aims of this work is to employ symmetries to generalize some results in the literature. We present new generalized formula solutions of a class of difference equations and we investigate the periodicity and behavior of theses solutions.
