Abstract:We study a realization of a 1d chain of Majorana bound states at the interfaces between alternating ferromagnetic and superconducting regions at a quantum spin Hall insulator edge. In the limit of well separated Majoranas, the system can be mapped to the transverse field Ising model. The disordered critical point can be reached by tuning the relative magnitude or phases of the ferromagnetic and superconducting order parameters. We compute the voltage dependence of the tunneling current from a metallic tip into the Majorana chain as a direct probe of the random critical state.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to realize a one - dimensional Majorana fermion chain at the edge of the Quantum Spin Hall (QSH) insulator and study its properties under different conditions, especially the behavior when these Majorana fermions are in the random - singlet phase. Specifically, the authors explore how to create Majorana fermion chains by alternately arranging Ferromagnetic (FM) and Superconducting (SC) regions, and use a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) probe to measure the electron tunneling current in these chains as a direct means of probing the random - singlet phase and its related properties. ### Background of the paper - **Majorana fermions**: They are special particles that are their own antiparticles and can be regarded as half of ordinary (Dirac) fermions. These particles have important theoretical significance in condensed - matter physics, especially in topological materials. - **Quantum Spin Hall insulator**: It is a two - dimensional material whose edges support gapless electron states. These electron states can be regarded as spin - up and spin - down electrons propagating in opposite directions, so it is called the "Quantum Spin Hall" phase. - **Random - singlet phase**: It is a quantum critical phenomenon caused by strong disorder, in which Majorana fermions form random pairs, resulting in the energy spectrum and transport properties of the system showing unique statistical characteristics. ### Research objectives - **Realize Majorana fermion chains**: By alternately arranging FM and SC regions at the QSH edge, form a series of Majorana fermions. - **Study the random - singlet phase**: Explore the behavior of these Majorana fermions in the random - singlet phase, especially their energy - level distribution and tunneling - current characteristics. - **Experimental verification**: Propose a method of using STM probes to measure the tunneling current to verify theoretical predictions and provide experimental evidence about the random - singlet phase. ### Main methods - **Hamiltonian derivation**: Starting from the Hamiltonian at the QSH edge, considering the influence of FM and SC regions, derive the Hamiltonian of the Majorana fermion chain. - **Real - Space Renormalization Group (RSRG)**: Use the RSRG method to simplify the complex chain - like system into independent Majorana pairs, so as to analytically study the energy levels and tunneling characteristics of the system. - **Tunneling - current calculation**: Calculate the tunneling current between the STM probe and the Majorana chain, and analyze its voltage - dependence relationship, especially the peak position and intensity of the tunneling current changing with voltage. ### Expected results - **Energy - level distribution**: Through the RSRG method, obtain the energy - level distribution of the Majorana chain, especially in the random - singlet phase. - **Tunneling - current characteristics**: Predict the voltage - dependence relationship of the tunneling current, especially the tunneling - current peaks at different energy levels, which can be used as direct evidence of the random - singlet phase. - **Experimental verification**: The proposed experimental scheme can be used for actual measurement, verify theoretical predictions, and provide an experimental basis for further research on the properties of Majorana fermions. In summary, this paper aims to explore and verify the unique properties of the Majorana fermion chain realized at the QSH edge in the random - singlet phase through a combination of theoretical and experimental methods.
