Abstract:This paper finds a symmetry relation (between quantiles of a random variable and its negative) that is intuitively appealing. We show this symmetry is quite useful in finding new relations for quantiles, in particular an equivariance property for quantiles under continuous decreasing transformations.

Abstract:It is widely claimed that the quantile function is equivariant under increasing transformations. We show by a counterexample that this is not true (even for strictly increasing transformations). However, we show that the quantile function is equivariant under left continuous increasing transformations. We also provide an equivariance relation for continuous decreasing transformations. In the case that the transformation is not continuous, we show that while the transformed quantile at p can be arbitrarily far from the quantile of the transformed at p (in terms of absolute difference), the probability mass between the two is zero. We also show by an example that weighted definition of the median is not equivariant under even strictly increasing continuous transformations.

Abstract:Symmetries are ubiquitous in science, aiding theoretical comprehension by discerning patterns in mathematical models and natural phenomena. This work introduces a method for assessing the extent of symmetry within a time series. We explore both microscopic and macroscopic features extracted from a recurrence plot. By analyzing the statistics of small recurrence matrices, our approach delves into microscale dynamics, facilitating the identification of symmetric time series segments through diagonal macroscale structures on a recurrence plot. We validate our approach by successfully quantifying involution symmetries for three-dimensional dynamical models, specifically, order-2 rotational symmetry in the Lorenz '63 model, and inversion symmetry in the Chua circuit. Our quantifier also detects symmetry breaking in the modified Lorenz model for El Niño phenomenon. The method can be applied in a versatile manner, not only to three-dimensional trajectories but also to univariate time series. Symmetry quantification in time series is promising for enhancing dynamical system modeling and profiling.

Abstract:We show that the left (right) sample quantile tends to the left (right) distribution quantile at p in [0,1], if the left and right quantiles are identical at p. We show that the sample quantiles diverge almost surely otherwise. The latter can be considered as a generalization of the well-known result that the sum of a random sample of a fair coin with 1 denoting heads and -1 denoting tails is 0 infinitely often. In the case that the sample quantiles do not converge we show that the limsup is the right quantile and the liminf is the left quantile.

Abstract:Symmetric derivatives and integrals are extensively studied to overcome the limitations of classical derivatives and integral operators. In the current investigation, we explore the quantum symmetric derivatives on finite intervals. We introduced the idea of right quantum symmetric derivatives and integral operators and studied various properties of both operators as well. Using these concepts, we deliver new variants of Young's inequality, Hölder's inequality, Minkowski's inequality, Hermite–Hadamard's inequality, Ostrowski's inequality, and Gruss–Chebysev inequality. We report the Hermite–Hadamard's inequalities by taking into account the differentiability of convex mappings. These fundamental results are pivotal to studying the various other problems in the field of inequalities. The validation of results is also supported with some visuals.

On asymmetry and quantile estimation of the stochastic frontier model

Abstract:Quantile regression has become common in applied economic research. Recently, these methods have been adapted for use with the stochastic frontier model. However, the composed nature of the error term is ignored, drawing into question if a "stochastic" quantile frontier is actually estimated. Here we demonstrate that a particular distributional pair is consistent with the intent of these earlier proposals but is not in fact a quantile estimator. An interesting feature of this distributional pairing is that both distributions can be asymmetric. We further discuss the identification and practical issues associated with this framework.

Abstract:In many cases the symmetry structure of quantum field theories can be neatly encoded into their associated symmetry theory (SymTFT), a topological field theory in one dimension higher. For geometrically engineered QFTs in string theory this SymTFT has been argued to arise from the background geometry, essentially by integration of the topological sector of string theory on the horizon of the geometry transverse to the QFT locus. In this paper we clarify some subtle aspects of this proposal. We take a higher dimensional approach, where the ten dimensional string theory fields to be integrated arise as edge modes of a topological field theory in eleven dimensions. The resulting construction provides a SymTFT generalisation of the descent procedure for anomalies.

Hypothesis testing of symmetry in quantum dynamics

Abstract:Symmetry plays a crucial role in quantum physics, dictating the behavior and dynamics of physical systems. In this paper, We develop a hypothesis-testing framework for quantum dynamics symmetry using a limited number of queries to the unknown unitary operation and establish the quantum max-relative entropy lower bound for the type-II error. We construct optimal ancilla-free protocols that achieve optimal type-II error probability for testing time-reversal symmetry (T-symmetry) and diagonal symmetry (Z-symmetry) with limited queries. Contrasting with the advantages of indefinite causal order strategies in various quantum information processing tasks, we show that parallel, adaptive, and indefinite causal order strategies have equal power for our tasks. We establish optimal protocols for T-symmetry testing and Z-symmetry testing for 6 and 5 queries, respectively, from which we infer that the type-II error exhibits a decay rate of $\mathcal{O}(m^{-2})$ with respect to the number of queries $m$. This represents a significant improvement over the basic repetition protocols without using global entanglement, where the error decays at a slower rate of $\mathcal{O}(m^{-1})$.

Abstract:Inspired by the theory of apartness relations of Scott, we establish a positive theory of dissimilarity valued in an involutive quantale $\mathsf{Q}$ without the aid of negation. It is demonstrated that a set equipped with a $\mathsf{Q}$-valued dissimilarity is precisely a symmetric category enriched in a subquantaloid of the quantaloid of back diagonals of $\mathsf{Q}$. Interactions between $\mathsf{Q}$-valued dissimilarities and $\mathsf{Q}$-valued similarities (which are equivalent to $\mathsf{Q}$-valued equalities in the sense of H{ö}hle--Kubiak) are investigated with the help of lax functors. In particular, it is shown that similarities and dissimilarities are interdefinable if $\mathsf{Q}$ is a Girard quantale with a hermitian and cyclic dualizing element.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a method for testing the conditional symmetry of multivariate random variables, specifically testing whether or not the conditional distribution of one random variable is symmetric around zero given another. Both the conditional symmetry test for observable data and unobserved error terms in parametric models are considered. The proposed test statistics are built on the weighted L2 -distance between empirical characteristic functions and require no distributional assumption about the data distribution. The asymptotic properties of the test statistics under the null and alternative hypotheses are investigated. Since the limiting null distributions are intractable, a nonparametric Monte Carlo resampling method is used to determine critical values. Simulation results show the good performance of the proposed method in various scenarios. Two real datasets are analysed to illustrate the practical usefulness of the proposed tests.

Abstract:We study the relationship between the zeros of the Riemann zeta function and physical systems exhibiting supersymmetry, $PT$ symmetry and $SU(2)$ group symmetry. Our findings demonstrate that unbroken supersymmetry is associated with the presence of non-trivial zeros of the zeta function. However, in other cases, supersymmetry is spontaneously broken and the ground state energy of the system is not zero. Moreover, we have established the manifestation of PT symmetry invariance within our supersymmetric system. In addition, our findings provide insights into a $SU(2)$ symmetry that arises within these systems, with the Hilbert space having a two-level structure.

Symmetries of quantization of finite groupoids

Abstract:This paper proves certain facts concerning the equivariance of quantization of pi-finite spaces. We argue that these facts establish an analogy between this quantization procedure and the geometric quantization of a symplectic vector space. Specifically, we observe that symmetries of a given polarization/Lagrangian always induce coherent symmetries of the quantization. On the other hand, symmetries of the entire phase space a priori only induce projective symmetries. For certain three-dimensional theories, this projectivity appears via a twice-categorified analogue of Blattner-Kostant-Sternberg kernels in geometric quantization and the associated integral transforms.

A quantum tug of war between randomness and symmetries on homogeneous spaces

Abstract:We explore the interplay between symmetry and randomness in quantum information. Adopting a geometric approach, we consider states as $H$-equivalent if related by a symmetry transformation characterized by the group $H$. We then introduce the Haar measure on the homogeneous space $\mathbb{U}/H$, characterizing true randomness for $H$-equivalent systems. While this mathematical machinery is well-studied by mathematicians, it has seen limited application in quantum information: we believe our work to be the first instance of utilizing homogeneous spaces to characterize symmetry in quantum information. This is followed by a discussion of approximations of true randomness, commencing with $t$-wise independent approximations and defining $t$-designs on $\mathbb{U}/H$ and $H$-equivalent states. Transitioning further, we explore pseudorandomness, defining pseudorandom unitaries and states within homogeneous spaces. Finally, as a practical demonstration of our findings, we study the expressibility of quantum machine learning ansatze in homogeneous spaces. Our work provides a fresh perspective on the relationship between randomness and symmetry in the quantum world.

Abstract:The theory of groups has a twofold symmetry, sending a group to its opposite. Groups invariant under the symmetry are abelian. The theory of quasigroups has a richer, sixfold symmetry, obtained by permuting the multiplication with its two divisions. The Sixfold Way identifies the various classes of quasigroups which are invariant under the respective subgroups of the symmetry group of the theory. Quantum quasigroups provide a self-dual framework to unify the study of quasigroups and Hopf algebras. The goal of this paper is to classify the symmetry classes of quantum quasigroups. Corresponding to the Sixfold Way for classical quasigroups, we are able to identify a Sevenfold Way for general classes exhibiting a symmetry, and initiate a study of a fuller symmetry which holds for linear quantum quasigroups.

Abstract:This paper develops a notion of geometric quantiles on Hadamard spaces, also known as global non-positive curvature spaces. After providing some definitions and basic properties, including scaled isometry equivariance and a necessary condition on the gradient of the quantile loss function at quantiles on Hadamard manifolds, we investigate asymptotic properties of sample quantiles on Hadamard manifolds, such as strong consistency and joint asymptotic normality. We provide a detailed description of how to compute quantiles using a gradient descent algorithm in hyperbolic space and, in particular, an explicit formula for the gradient of the quantile loss function, along with experiments using simulated and real single-cell RNA sequencing data.

Abstract:We present a simple result that allows us to evaluate the asymptotic order of the remainder of a partial asymptotic expansion of the quantile function $h(u)$ as $u\to 0^+$ or $1^-$. This is focussed on important univariate distributions when $h(\cdot)$ has no simple closed form, with a view to assessing asymptotic rate of decay to zero of tail dependence in the context of bivariate copulas. The Introduction motivates the study in terms of the standard Normal. The Normal, Skew-Normal and Gamma are used as initial examples. Finally, we discuss approximation to the lower quantile of the Variance-Gamma and Skew-Slash distributions.

Testing symmetry on quantum computers

Abstract:Symmetry is a unifying concept in physics. In quantum information and beyond, it is known that quantum states possessing symmetry are not useful for certain information-processing tasks. For example, states that commute with a Hamiltonian realizing a time evolution are not useful for timekeeping during that evolution, and bipartite states that are highly extendible are not strongly entangled and thus not useful for basic tasks like teleportation. Motivated by this perspective, this paper details several quantum algorithms that test the symmetry of quantum states and channels. For the case of testing Bose symmetry of a state, we show that there is a simple and efficient quantum algorithm, while the tests for other kinds of symmetry rely on the aid of a quantum prover. We prove that the acceptance probability of each algorithm is equal to the maximum symmetric fidelity of the state being tested, thus giving a firm operational meaning to these latter resource quantifiers. Special cases of the algorithms test for incoherence or separability of quantum states. We evaluate the performance of these algorithms on choice examples by using the variational approach to quantum algorithms, replacing the quantum prover with a parameterized circuit. We demonstrate this approach for numerous examples using the IBM quantum noiseless and noisy simulators, and we observe that the algorithms perform well in the noiseless case and exhibit noise resilience in the noisy case. We also show that the maximum symmetric fidelities can be calculated by semi-definite programs, which is useful for benchmarking the performance of these algorithms for sufficiently small examples. Finally, we establish various generalizations of the resource theory of asymmetry, with the upshot being that the acceptance probabilities of the algorithms are resource monotones and thus well motivated from the resource-theoretic perspective.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the quantization of Kähler manifolds, focusing on the relationship between deformation quantization and geometric quantization. We provide a classification of degree 1 formal quantizable functions in the Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization, establishing that these formal functions are of the form $f = f_0 - \frac{\hbar}{4\pi}(\Delta f_0 + c)$ for a certain smooth (non-formal) function $f_0$. If $f_0$ is real-valued then $f_0$ corresponds to a Hamiltonian Killing vector field. In the presence of Hamiltonian $G$-symmetry, we address the compatibility between the infinitesimal symmetry for deformation quantization via quantum moment map and infinitesimal symmetry on geometric quantization acting on Hilbert spaces of holomorphic sections via Berezin-Toeplitz quantization.

Abstract:The interrelation between classicality/quantumness and symmetry of states is discussed within the phase-space formulation of finite-dimensional quantum systems. We derive representations for classicality measures $\mathcal{Q}_N[H_{\varrho}]$ of states from the stratum of given symmetry type $[H_{\varrho}]$ for the Hilbert-Schmidt ensemble of qudits. The expressions for measures are given in terms of the permanents of matrices constructed from the vertices of the special Wigner function's positivity polytope. The supposition about the partial order of classicality indicators $\mathcal{Q}_N[H_{\varrho}]$ in accordance with the symmetry type of stratum is formulated.

Abstract:Abstract Symmetry and symmetry breaking are two pillars of modern quantum physics. Still, quantifying how much a symmetry is broken is an issue that has received little attention. In extended quantum systems, this problem is intrinsically bound to the subsystem of interest. Hence, in this work, we borrow methods from the theory of entanglement in many-body quantum systems to introduce a subsystem measure of symmetry breaking that we dub entanglement asymmetry . As a prototypical illustration, we study the entanglement asymmetry in a quantum quench of a spin chain in which an initially broken global U (1) symmetry is restored dynamically. We adapt the quasiparticle picture for entanglement evolution to the analytic determination of the entanglement asymmetry. We find, expectedly, that larger is the subsystem, slower is the restoration, but also the counterintuitive result that more the symmetry is initially broken, faster it is restored, a sort of quantum Mpemba effect, a phenomenon that we show to occur in a large variety of systems.
