Abstract:The classification and metabolism of lipoproteins and their relation to the risk of coronary heart disease are briefly discussed. Cross-sectional studies indicate that people who practice endurance training tend to have higher levels of HDL, but lower plasma concentrations of VLDL, LDL and triglycerides than physically inactive persons of the same age and sex. A similar picture has emerged from longitudinal studies. The effects of physical training on the level of total cholesterol is less certain (but probably also less important since the essential part of plasma cholesterol is present in lipoproteins--LDL and HDL--which are considered to have antagonistic functions in the development of atherosclerosis). Forced training of rats resulted in a lowering of total concentrations of cholesterol (although there are some negative reports) and triglycerides, increased activity of lipoprotein lipase in the muscle, increased activity of the plasma enzyme LCAT (lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase) and increased excretion of bile acids in the faeces. In human subjects who practice endurance training a similar increase in activity of the above enzymes has been demonstrated and this may be the basis for the effect of training on lipoprotein concentrations in plasma. It is concluded that physical activity of endurance type appears to have a favourable effect on the pattern of lipoproteins in the plasma (rise in HDL, fall in VLDL and LDL), and that consequently such training may have significance for the prevention of coronary heart disease.

Abstract:Our purpose was to elucidate effects of acute exercise and training on blood lipids-lipoproteins, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in overweight/obese men (n = 10) and women (n = 8); age, BMI, body fat percentage, and VO(2)max were (mean ± SEM): 45 ± 2.5 years, 31.9 ± 1.4 kg·m(-2), 41.1 ± 1.5%, and 25.2 ± 1.3 mlO(2)·kg(-1)·min(-1). Before exercise training subjects performed an acute exercise session on a treadmill (70% VO(2)max, 400 kcal energy expenditure), followed by 12 weeks of endurance exercise training (land-based or aquatic-based treadmill): 3 sessions·week(-1), progressing to 500 kcal·session(-1) during which subjects maintained accustomed dietary habits. After training, the acute exercise session was repeated. Blood samples, obtained immediately before and 24 h after acute exercise sessions, were analyzed for serum lipids, lipoproteins, and hsCRP adjusted for plasma volume shifts. Exercise training increased VO(2)max (+3.67 mlO(2)·kg(-1)·min(-1), P < 0.001) and reduced body weight (-2.7 kg, P < 0.01). Training increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and HDL(2b)-cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations (+3.7 and +2.4 mg·dl(-1), P < 0.05) and particle numbers (+588 and +206 nmol·l(-1), P < 0.05) in men. In women despite no change in total HDL-C, subfractions shifted from HDL(3)-C (-3.2, P < 0.01) to HDL(2b)-C (+3.5, P < 0.05) and HDL(2a)-C (+2.2 mg·dl(-1), P < 0.05), with increased HDL(2b) particle number (+313 nmol·l(-1), P < 0.05). Training reduced LDL(3) concentration and particle number in women (-1.6 mg·dl(-1) and -16 nmol·l(-1), P < 0.05). Acute exercise reduced the total cholesterol (TC): HDL-C ratio in men (-0.16, P < 0.01) and increased hsCRP in all subjects (+0.05 mg·dl(-1), P < 0.05), regardless of training. Training did not affect acute exercise responses. Our data support the efficacy of endurance training, without dietary intervention, to elicit beneficial changes in blood lipids-lipoproteins in obese men and women.

Effects of Long-Term Exercise of Moderate Intensity on Anthropometric Values and Serum Lipids and Lipoproteins

Abstract:The influence of endurance training on serum lipids and lipoproteins was investigated in 20 sedentary males and 14 sedentary females. The total group was trained 3 to 4 times a week for 9 months. After 24 weeks all subjects ran a 15 km-race and after 36 weeks a half-marathon (21 km) race. Anthropometric values were determined before and after the training programme. Blood samples were drawn before the start of the training programme and, in order to avoid the measurement of acute effects, 5 days before both races. In the male group, median body weight and body mass were significantly decreased (p < 0.01) after nine months of training, while in the female group body weight and body mass index remained essentially unchanged. Percentage body fat, measured by skinfold thickness was significantly decreased in both groups at the end of the training programme. During the training period, median serum total cholesterol, low density lipid cholesterol and triacylglycerol concentrations decreased significantly (p < 0.01) in the male group, while in the female population the median serum lipid- and lipoprotein concentrations did not differ from pre-training values. The changes in serum lipids or lipoproteins did not correlate significantly with changes in body weight, body mass index or percentage body fat. Stepwise multiple regression showed that these changes were mostly dependent on initial concentrations in serum. Finally, no significant increase in median high density lipid cholesterol was observed in either the male or female group.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Influence of Resistance Training on Serum Lipid and Lipoprotein Concentrations in Young Men and Women

Abstract:Although endurance training has been repeatedly shown to favorably alter lipid and lipoprotein concentrations, data on the effects of resistance training are equivocal. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of short-term, high-intensity resistance training on the lipid profile of young men and women. The resistance training program was known to result in significant adaptations within the vastus lateralis muscle (39), which could contribute to alterations in lipid profile. Thirty-two college-aged individuals were divided into four groups: training men (n = 12), control men (n = 7), training women (n = 8), and control women (n = 5). The short-term (8-week) training period consisted of three exercises for the lower extremity (squats, leg press, and leg extension) performed two times a week for three sets to failure, performing 6-8 repetitions maximum (RM) on Mondays and 8-10 RM on Fridays. After fasting, blood was drawn at three time points (pre-, mid-, and posttraining) and analyzed for lipid and lipoprotein concentrations (total cholesterol, low-and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides). Although the training program resulted in significant alterations in body composition (decrease in percent body fat) and fiber composition (hypertrophy and type IIB to IIA fiber conversions), no change was detected over time for any of the blood lipid parameters in either young men or young women. Thus, while any form of physical activity may prove beneficial for individuals at risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), short-term, high-intensity resistance training does not appear to influence serum lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in young individuals not at risk for CHD. Relationship between physical activity and HDL-cholesterol in healthy older men and women: a cross-sectional and exercise intervention study

Abstract:We used cross-sectional and exercise intervention studies to examine whether physical activity levels or increases in peak aerobic capacity (peak VO2) explain variation in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels in older men and women. In the cross-sectional study, 307 older individuals (169 men; 138 women; 67 +/- 7 years) were characterized for HDL-C, leisure time physical activity, peak VO2, body composition, body fat distribution and dietary intake. HDL-C was 19% higher (P < 0.001) in women (57 +/- 14 mg/dl) versus men (48 +/- 14 mg/dl). Thirty-two percent of the variation in HDL-C in older men was explained by the waist circumference (r2 = 16%), percent dietary intake of alcohol (r2 = 11%), and carbohydrate (r2 = 6%). Waist circumference was also the best predictor of HDL-C in older women, (r2 = 7%); with percent dietary intake of carbohydrate adding an additional 6% to the model. Neither peak VO2 nor leisure time physical activity were independent predictors of HDL-C. Statistical control for the aforementioned variables diminished, but did not abolish gender differences in HDL-C. Thirty-seven older individuals (23 men; 14 women) participated in a 2-month exercise program in which individuals by week eight were expending approximately 900 kcal per week in exercise energy expenditure. Subjects were maintained in energy balance throughout the exercise program. Endurance training significantly increased peak VO2 by 15% in both men and women, and by design, body composition and body fat distribution did not change. No changes in HDL-C levels were noted. In conclusion, variations in leisure time physical activity or increases in peak VO2 are not independent predictors of HDL-C levels in healthy older men and women. Instead, central adiposity, as estimated by the waist circumference, and to a lesser extent, dietary intake of carbohydrate and alcohol, are significant predictors of variation in plasma HDL-C levels. Furthermore, short-term exercise training, generating less than 900 kcal per week in exercise energy expenditure, in the absence of weight loss, fails to influence HDL-C levels.

Abstract:Background and Objectives: Atherosclerosis, driven by dyslipidaemia and oxidative stress, is a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This study evaluates the effects of vigorous-intensity bodybuilding exercise (VIBBE) on atherosclerosis biomarkers-including paraoxonase-1 (PON1) and arylesterase (ARE) activities-and lipid profiles in male bodybuilders who do not use anabolic-androgenic steroids. Comparisons were made with individuals engaged in moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (MIAE), as well as overweight/obese sedentary (OOS) and normal-weight sedentary (NWS) individuals. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 122 healthy male participants aged 18-45 years, divided into four groups: VIBBE (n = 31), OOS (n = 30), MIAE (n = 32), and NWS (n = 29). Anthropometric assessments were performed, and fasting blood samples were collected for biochemical analyses, including lipid profiles and PON1 and ARE activities. Statistical analyses compared the groups and evaluated correlations between adiposity measures and atherosclerosis biomarkers. Results: The VIBBE group exhibited significantly lower levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and logarithm of the TG to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio [log(TG/HDL-C)] compared to the OOS group (p < 0.05 for all), indicating improved lipid profiles. However, these improvements were not significant when compared to the NWS group (p > 0.05), suggesting that VIBBE may not provide additional lipid profile benefits beyond those associated with normal weight status. PON1 and ARE activities were significantly lower in the VIBBE group compared to the MIAE group (p < 0.05 for both), suggesting that VIBBE may not effectively enhance antioxidant defences. Correlation analyses revealed significant inverse relationships between PON1 and ARE activities and adiposity measures, including body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body fat percentage (BFP), fat mass index (FMI), and obesity degree (OD) (p < 0.05 for all). Positive correlations were observed between oxLDL and log(TG/HDL-C) and adiposity measures (p < 0.05 for all). Conclusions: Vigorous-intensity bodybuilding exercise improves certain lipid parameters compared to sedentary obese individuals but does not significantly enhance antioxidant enzyme activities or further improve lipid profiles beyond those observed in normal-weight sedentary men. Conversely, moderate-intensity aerobic exercise significantly enhances PON1 and ARE activities and improves lipid profiles, offering superior cardiovascular benefits. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating moderate-intensity aerobic exercise into physical activity guidelines to optimize cardiovascular health by balancing improvements in lipid metabolism with enhanced antioxidant defences.
Effects of exercise training on the chemical composition of plasma LDL.

Abstract:The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of exercise training on the chemical composition of plasma low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Thirteen men (mean age +/- SE, 47.2 +/- 1.5 years) were examined before and after 14 weeks of endurance-oriented exercise training (3 to 4 d/wk, 30 to 45 min/d). Although calculated plasma LDL concentrations remained unaltered (3.49 +/- 0.24 versus 3.65 +/- 0.23 mmol/L), changes in the chemical composition of LDL (increased LDL free cholesterol, cholesterol ester, and phospholipid content) were associated with a reduction in adiposity, umbilical girth, and basal plasma insulin and glucose concentration with training intervention. Increases in LDL molecular weight and particle diameter were associated with a reduction in fat mass, plasma triglyceride concentration, and basal plasma glucose concentration with physical activity. The LDL lipid-to-protein ratio also increased (P < .01) with training by 7%, primarily due to an increase in LDL free cholesterol content (P < .01). These findings indicate the formation of LDL particles that are more cholesterol enriched and protein poor with exercise training, which provides additional evidence for the cardioprotective effect of long-term physical activity.
Low and moderate, rather than high intensity strength exercise induces benefit regarding plasma lipid profile

Abstract:BackgroundThe effects of chronic aerobic exercise upon lipid profile has been previously demonstrated, but few studies showed this effect under resistance exercise conditions.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to examine the effects of different resistance exercise loads on blood lipids.MethodsThirty healthy, untrained male volunteers were allocated randomly into four groups based at different percentages of one repetition maximum (1 RM); 50%-1 RM, 75%-1 RM, 90%-1 RM, and 110%-1 RM. The total volume (sets × reps × load) of the exercise was equalized. The lipid profile (Triglycerides [TG], HDL-cholesterol [HDL-c], LDL-cholesterol, and Total cholesterol) was determined at rest and after 1, 24, 48 and 72 h of resistance exercise.ResultsThe 75%-1 RM group demonstrated greater TG reduction when compared to other groups (p < 0.05). Additionally, the 110%-1 RM group presented an increased TG concentration when compared to 50% and 75% groups (p = 0.01, p = 0.01, respectively). HDL-c concentration was significantly greater after resistance exercise in 50%-1 RM and 75%-1 RM when compared to 110%-1 RM group (p = 0.004 and p = 0.03, respectively). Accordingly, the 50%-1 RM group had greater HDL-c concentration than 110%-1 RM group after 48 h (p = 0.05) and 72 h (p = 0.004), respectively. Finally, The 50% group has showed lesser LDL-c concentration than 110% group after 24 h (p = 0.007). No significant difference was found in Total Cholesterol concentrations.ConclusionThese results indicate that the acute resistance exercise may induce changes in lipid profile in a specific-intensity manner. Overall, low and moderate exercise intensities appear to be promoting more benefits on lipid profile than high intensity. Long term studies should confirm these findings.

HDL-C and Apolipoprotein A-I are Independently Associated with Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Function in Healthy Humans.

Abstract:Prior animal and cell studies have demonstrated a direct role of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and Apolipoprotein A-I (Apo A-I) in enhancing skeletal muscle mitochondrial function and exercise capacity. However, the relevance of these animal and cell investigations in humans remains unknown. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was conducted in 48 adults (67% female, 8% Black participants, age 39 ± 15.4 years) to characterize the associations between HDL measures, Apo A-I, and muscle mitochondrial function. Forearm muscle oxygen recovery time (tau) from post-exercise recovery kinetics was used to assess skeletal muscle mitochondrial function. Lipoprotein measures were assessed by nuclear magnetic resonance. HDL efflux capacity was assessed using J774 macrophages, radiolabeled cholesterol, and Apolipoprotein B-depleted plasma both with and without added cyclic adenosine monophosphate. In univariate analyses, faster skeletal muscle oxygen recovery time (lower tau) was significantly associated with higher levels of HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), ApoA-I, and larger mean HDL size, but not HDL cholesterol efflux capacity. Slower recovery time (higher tau) was positively associated with body mass index (BMI) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG). In multivariable linear regression analyses, higher levels of HDL-C and Apo A-I, as well as larger HDL size, were independently associated with faster skeletal muscle oxygen recovery times that persisted after adjusting for BMI and FPG (all p <0.05). In conclusion, higher levels of HDL-C, Apo A-I, and larger mean HDL size were independently associated with enhanced skeletal muscle mitochondrial function in healthy humans.

The Influence of Exercise Training on Plasma Lipids and Lipoproteins in Health and Disease

Abstract:There is a very high probability that lipoprotein metabolism plays a central role in the etiology of coronary heart disease. In sedentary persons one way to favorably alter lipoprotein metabolism and possibly delay the progression of coronary atherosclerosis is by an increase in their habitual physical activity. More physically active persons tend to have lower plasma triglycerides and very low density lipoprotein concentrations, and a greater high-density lipoprotein mass due to higher concentrations of the subfraction HDL2 and apoprotein A-I. Plasma low-density lipoprotein concentrations usually are not significantly reduced by exercise unless accompanied by weight loss, but there may be important changes in the distribution among the low-density subfractions. These exercise effects are most likely mediated by alterations in the activity of enzymes involved in the synthesis, transport and catabolism of the various lipoproteins including lipoprotein lipase, hepatic lipase and lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase. In healthy persons as well as in patients with ischemic heart disease, diabetes and renal failure, an increase in moderate-intensity, endurance-type activity requiring an expenditure of approximately 4 MJ (1,000 kcal) per week usually produce favorable lipoprotein changes. Above this level a dose-response relationship exists, with greater changes occurring up to energy expenditures of 19 MJ (4,500 kcal) per week.

Abstract:Exercise has beneficial effects on lipoproteins. Little is known about how long the effects persist with detraining or whether the duration of benefit is effected by training intensity or amount. Sedentary, overweight subjects (n = 240) were randomized to 6-mo control or one of three exercise groups: 1) high-amount/vigorous-intensity exercise; 2) low-amount/vigorous-intensity exercise; or 3) low-amount/moderate-intensity exercise. Training consisted of a gradual increase in amount of exercise followed by 6 mo of exercise at the prescribed level. Exercise included treadmill, elliptical trainer, and stationary bicycle. The number of minutes necessary to expend the prescribed kilocalories per week (14 kcal x kg body wt(-1) x wk(-1) for both low-amount groups; 23 kcal x kg body wt(-1) x wk(-1) for high-amount group) was calculated for each subject. Average adherence was 83-92% for the three groups; minutes per week were 207, 125, and 203 and sessions per week were 3.6, 2.9, and 3.5 for high-amount/vigorous-intensity, low-amount/vigorous intensity, and low-amount/moderate-intensity groups, respectively. Plasma was obtained at baseline, 24 h, 5 days, and 15 days after exercise cessation. Continued inactivity resulted in significant increases in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle number, small dense LDL, and LDL-cholesterol. A modest amount of exercise training prevented this deterioration. Moderate-intensity but not vigorous-intensity exercise resulted in a sustained reduction in very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)-triglycerides over 15 days of detraining (P < 0.05). The high-amount group had significant improvements in high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, HDL particle size, and large HDL levels that were sustained for 15 days after exercise stopped. In conclusion, physical inactivity has profound negative effects on lipoprotein metabolism. Modest exercise prevented this. Moderate-intensity but not vigorous-intensity exercise resulted in sustained VLDL-triglyceride lowering. Thirty minutes per day of vigorous exercise, like jogging, has sustained beneficial effects on HDL metabolism.
Skeletal muscle morphology and risk of cardiovascular disease in elderly men

Abstract:BACKGROUND: While it is well known that physical inactivity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, there is still a search for the mechanisms by which exercise exerts its positive effect. Skeletal muscle fibre type can be affected to some extent by exercise, and different fibre types possess different anti-inflammatory and glucometabolic properties that may influence cardiovascular disease risk.DESIGN: Population-based cohort study.METHODS: We investigated relations of skeletal muscle morphology to risk of cardiovascular events in a sample of 466 71-year-old men without cardiovascular disease, of which 295 were physically active (strenuous physical activity at least 3 h/week).RESULTS: During a median of 13.1 years of follow up, 173 major cardiovascular events occurred. Among physically active men, 10% higher proportion of type-I (slow-twitch oxidative) fibres was associated with a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.84 (95% confidence interval 0.74-0.95) for cardiovascular events, and 10% higher proportion of type-IIx (fast-twitch glycolytic) fibres was associated with a HR of 1.24 (1.06-1.45), adjusting for age. Similar results were observed in several sets of multivariable-adjusted models. No association of muscle fibre type with risk of cardiovascular events was observed among physically inactive men.CONCLUSIONS: Higher skeletal muscle proportion of type-I fibres was associated with lower risk of cardiovascular events and a higher proportion of type-IIx fibres was associated with higher risk of cardiovascular events. These relations were only observed in physically active men. Skeletal muscle fibre composition may be a mediator of the protective effects of exercise against cardiovascular disease.

Abstract:Background: Short-term exercise training programs that consist of moderate intensity endurance training or high intensity interval training have become popular choices for healthy lifestyle modifications, with as little as two weeks of training being shown to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and whole-body glucose metabolism. An emerging concept in exercise biology is that exercise stimulates the release of cytokines and other factors into the blood that contribute to the beneficial effects of exercise on metabolism, but whether these factors behave similarly in response to moderate and high intensity short term training is not known. Here, we determined the effects of two short-term exercise training programs on the concentrations of select secreted cytokines and Klotho, a protein involved in anti-aging. Methods: Healthy, sedentary men (n = 22) were randomized to moderate intensity training (MIT) or sprint intensity training (SIT) treatment groups. SIT consisted of 6 sessions over 2 weeks of 6 × 30 s all out cycle ergometer sprints with 4 min of recovery between sprints. MIT consisted of 6 sessions over 2 weeks of cycle ergometer exercise at 60% VO2peak, gradually increasing in duration from 40 to 60 min. Blood was taken before the intervention and 48 h after the last training session, and glucose uptake was measured using [18F]FDG-PET/CT scanning. Cytokines were measured by multiplex and Klotho concentrations by ELISA. Results: Both training protocols similarly increased VO2peak and decreased fat percentage and visceral fat (P < 0.05). MIT and SIT training programs both reduced the concentrations of IL-6, Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF) and Leptin. Interestingly, MIT, but not SIT increased monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) concentrations, an exercise-induced cytokine, as well as Klotho concentrations. Conclusion: Short-term exercise training at markedly different intensities similarly improves cardiovascular fitness but results in intensity-specific changes in cytokine responses to exercise.
Association of muscle fiber composition with health and exercise-related traits in athletes and untrained subjects

Abstract:Skeletal muscle is a heterogenous and metabolically active tissue, the composition of which is associated with multiple traits. The aim of the study was to determine whether there are additional health and exercise-related traits associated with muscle fiber composition in athletes and non-athletes. This study recruited 164 Russian participants (51 endurance and 48 power athletes; 65 controls). Vastus lateralis muscle fiber composition was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Slow-twitch muscle fiber percentage (STMF%) was significantly greater in endurance than power athletes and non-athletes, and in non-athlete females than males. STMF% was positively associated with athletes' training frequency, non-athletes' and endurance athletes' age, endurance athletes' competition level and chest depth, and power athletes' training age. STMF% was negatively associated with diastolic blood pressure in power athletes and with systolic blood pressure and reaction time in non-athletes. In all participants, STMF% was positively associated with age, tolerance to long distance exercise, chest depth and fracture incidence, and negatively with systolic blood pressure and resting heart rate. Age, sex and training frequency explained 10.6% and 13.2% of the variance in STMF% in endurance and power athletes, respectively. This is one of the most comprehensive studies involving athletes and untrained subjects and provides novel information concerning associations of increased STMF percentage with lower resting heart rate, better tolerance to long distances, faster reaction time and larger chest depth. On the other hand, the increased percentage of fast-twitch muscle fibers was associated with rare fracture incidence.

Response of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein to exercise training in an at-risk population

Abstract:Background: High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is promoted as an independent predictor of atherosclerotic risk. In addition, cardiorespiratory fitness is inversely related to hsCRP in single-sex cross-sectional analyses. Our objective was to determine if modulating fitness with exercise training imposes changes in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in a mixed-sex population at risk for cardiovascular disease. Methods: We studied baseline and postintervention plasma hsCRP in 193 sedentary, overweight to mildly obese, dyslipidemic men and women who were randomized to 6 months of inactivity or 1 of 3 aerobic exercise groups: low amount-moderate intensity (energy equivalent of approximately 19.3 km/wk at 40%-55% peak VO2), low amount-high intensity (energy equivalent of approximately 19.3 km/wk at 65%-80% peak VO2), or high amount-high intensity (energy equivalent of approximately 32.2 km/wk at 65%-80% peak VO2). Results: At baseline, the study population was at intermediate to high cardiovascular risk as defined by hsCRP. Cardiorespiratory fitness was inversely related to hsCRP (P < .001) even after adjusting for significant and expected sex differences. Fitness, hormone replacement therapy use, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol accounted for the sex difference in baseline hsCRP. Fitness, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting insulin, hormone replacement therapy, and visceral adiposity were all independent predictors for baseline hsCRP (r2 = 0.34 for the entire model, P < .0001). However, despite significant improvements in fitness, visceral adiposity, subcutaneous adiposity, and insulin sensitivity, hsCRP did not change in response to exercise training (P > .20). Conclusions: Cardiorespiratory fitness is inversely related to hsCRP independent of sex and accounts for most of the large sex disparity in hsCRP. Nonetheless, in the absence of a significant change in diet, 6 months of aerobic exercise training does not produce a significant change in hsCRP in an at-risk population.

Abstract:Low concentrations of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are a recognized risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Exercise is often recommended to increase HDL-C, but the effect of exercise training on HDL levels and metabolism in subjects with low HDL concentrations is not well defined. The present study compared the HDL response to 12 months of supervised endurance exercise training without weight loss in 17 men aged 26 49 years with initially low ( < 40 mg/dl, N=7) or normal ( > 44 mg/dl, N=10) HDL-C levels. HDL-C levels and HDL apolipoprotein metabolism were assessed while the subjects consumed controlled diets before and after the year of training. Increases in total (5.1+/-2.8 versus 1.9+/-4.2 mg/dl, P=0.08) and HDL2 (3.8+/-2.9 versus 0.4+/-1.1 mg/dl, P=0.01) cholesterol were greater in men with normal initial HDL-C levels. Catabolic rates for HDL apolipoproteins decreased 7-14% and biological half-lives increased 10-15% after exercise training in subjects with normal HDL, but were unchanged in the low HDL-C group. HDL apolipoprotein synthetic rates were not consistently affected by exercise training in either group. Postheparin lipoprotein lipase activity increased 27%, the clearance rate of intravenous triglycerides increased 14%, and apolipoprotein B levels decreased 16% with training in subjects with normal HDL-C but were unchanged in the low HDL-C group. We conclude that the ability to increase HDL-C levels through endurance exercise training is limited in subjects with low initial HDL-C, possibly because exercise training in such subjects fails to alter triglyceride metabolism.

Abstract:The effects of a 12-week resistance exercise training (RT) program on body composition and serum lipid concentrations were assessed in weight-stable, moderately overweight older men (n = 18) and women (n = 17) aged 54 to 71 years with a body mass index (BMI) of 26 to 36 kg/m2. Following RT, the men had a significant increase in fat-free mass (FFM) and a decrease in percent body fat (%BF) and fat mass (FM), whereas the women demonstrated no change, resulting in significant time-by-sex interactions for FFM (P = .002), %BF (P = .006), and FM (P = .005). There were no changes in total cholesterol (Chol), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), or triacylglycerol (Tg) due to RT. However, following RT, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) increased (0.06+/-0.02 mmol/L) in the men and decreased (0.09+/-0.03 mmol/L) in the women (time-by-sex interaction, P = .0004). The Chol/HDL-C ratio decreased (0.36+/-0.11) in the men and increased (0.29+/-0.10) in the women (time-by-sex interaction, P = .0001). For all subjects combined, the changes in HDL-C and the Chol/HDL-C ratio were not related to any changes in body fat stores (ie, %BF or FM), suggesting that RT may potentially alter the lipoprotein-lipid profile in older weight-stable men and women. In conclusion, although the changes in the lipoprotein-lipid profile were small, the men had a significantly increased HDL-C level and decreased Chol/HDL-C ratio, while the women demonstrated opposite changes.
