Abstract:In this short note, we prove that if an axially symmetric, asymptotically flat, stationary solution of the Einstein Vacuum Equation admits an involution interchanging the components of the event horizons, then the force between at least two of the event horizons must be positive. The proof is based on an observation that in this case the force can be expressed as a line integral with positive integrand.

Abstract:We finish the proof of the no-hair theorem for stationary, analytic, connected, suitably regular, four dimensional vacuum black holes. We show how to define the surface gravity and the angular velocity of horizons without assuming analyticity. We point out that, under the usual regularity conditions, vacuum near-horizon geometries are Kerrian without assuming analyticity.

Abstract:We show that a stationary asymptotically flat electro-vacuum solution of Einstein’s equations that is everywhere locally “almost isometric” to a Kerr–Newman solution cannot admit more than one event horizon. Axial symmetry is not assumed. In particular this implies that the assumption of a single event horizon in Alexakis–Ionescu–Klainerman’s proof of perturbative uniqueness of Kerr black holes is in fact unnecessary.

Abstract:We prove that any analytic vacuum spacetime with a positive cosmological constant in four and higher dimensions, that contains a static extremal Killing horizon with a maximally symmetric compact cross-section, must be locally isometric to either the extremal Schwarzschild de Sitter solution or its near-horizon geometry (the Nariai solution). In four-dimensions, this implies these solutions are the only analytic vacuum spacetimes that contain a static extremal horizon with compact cross-sections (up to identifications). We also consider the analogous uniqueness problem for the four-dimensional extremal hyperbolic Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter solution and show that it reduces to a spectral problem for the laplacian on compact hyperbolic surfaces, if a cohomological obstruction to the uniqueness of infinitesimal transverse deformations of the horizon is absent.

Abstract:The celebrated geodesic congruence equation of Raychaudhuri, together with the resulting singularity theorems of Penrose and Hawking that it enabled, yield a highly general set of conditions under which a spacetime (or, more generically, a pseudo-Riemannian manifold) is expected to become geodesically incomplete. It is a non-trivial question to ask whether (and to what extent) there exist equivalently general conditions under which one expects discrete spacetimes to become geodesically incomplete, and how these conditions might differ from those in the continuum. This article builds upon previous work, in which the conformal and covariant Z4 (CCZ4) formulation of the Cauchy problem for the Einstein field equations, with constraint-violation damping, was defined in terms of Wolfram model evolution over discrete (spatial) hypergraphs for the case of vacuum spacetimes, and proceeds to consider a minimal extension to the non-vacuum case by introducing a massive scalar field distribution, defined in either spherical or axial symmetry. Under appropriate assumptions, this scalar field distribution admits a physical interpretation as a collapsing (and, in the axially-symmetric case, uniformly rotating) dust, and we are able to show, through a combination of rigorous mathematical analysis and explicit numerical simulation, that the resulting discrete spacetimes converge asymptotically to either non-rotating Schwarzschild black hole solutions or maximally-rotating (extremal) Kerr black hole solutions, respectively. Although the assumptions used in obtaining these preliminary results are very strong, they nevertheless offer hope that a more general, perhaps ultimately ``Penrose-like'', singularity theorem may be provable in the discrete spacetime case too.

Abstract:We study time-dependent compactification of extra dimensions. We assume that the spacetime is spatially homogeneous, and solve the vacuum Einstein equations without cosmological constant in more than three dimensions. We consider globally hyperbolic spacetimes in which almost abelian Lie groups act on the spaces isometrically and simply transitively. We give left-invariant metrics on the spaces and solve Ricci-flat conditions of the spacetimes. In the four-dimensional case, our solutions correspond to the Bianchi type II solution. By our results and previous studies, all spatially homogeneous solutions whose spaces have zero-dimensional moduli spaces of left-invariant metrics are found. For the simplest solution, we show that each of the spatial dimensions cannot expand or contract simultaneously in the late-time limit.

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study of continuously self-similar (CSS) gravitational dynamics in two dimensions, motivated by critical phenomena observed in higher dimensional gravitational theories. We consider CSS spacetimes admitting a homothetic Killing vector (HKV) field. For a general two-dimensional gravitational theory coupled to a dilaton field and Maxwell field, we find that the assumption of continuous self-similarity determines the form of the dilaton coupling to the curvature. Certain limits produce two important classes of models, one of which is closely related to two-dimensional target space string theory and the other being Liouville gravity. The gauge field is shown to produce a shift in the dilaton potential strength. We consider static black hole solutions and find spacetimes with uncommon asymptotic behaviour. We show the vacuum self-similar spacetimes to be special limits of the static solutions. We add matter fields consistent with self-similarity (including a certain model of semi-classical gravity) and write down the autonomous ordinary differential equations governing the gravitational dynamics. Based on the phenomenon of finite-time blow-up in ODEs, we argue that spacetime singularities are generic in our models. We present qualitatively diverse results from analytical and numerical investigations regarding matter field collapse and singularities. We find interesting hints of a Choptuik-like scaling law.

Abstract:We perform a thorough analysis of de Sitter solutions in O(d,d) invariant cosmologies. Starting with a homogeneous and isotropic framework we examine conditions for the existence of such solutions to the vacuum field equations, nonperturbative in α′ in both the string frame and the Einstein frame. We elucidate the nature of the instability in the string frame vacuum. For the Einstein frame, we demonstrate that the de Sitter solutions cannot be eternal. We then extend our analysis to include Bianchi I universes where the O(d,d) symmetry includes scale factor exchange as well as scale factor duality. A new representation of vacuum Lovelock solutions in $d = 2N+1$ dimensions: Black holes with an integrable singularity and regular black holes

Abstract:In recent years, black hole (BH) solutions with an integrable singularity have garnered significant attention as alternatives to regular black holes (RBH). In these models, similarly to RBHs, an object would not undergo spaghettification when approaching the radial origin. Instead of the potentially unstable de Sitter core present in RBHs, an integrable singularity emerges where the Ricci scalar diverges while its volume integral remains finite. However, the construction of both RBH solutions and BHs with an integrable singularity typically requires the inclusion of specific forms of matter in the energy-momentum tensor. We demonstrate that, from a geometric perspective in the absence of matter, vacuum solutions in Lovelock gravity in $d=2n+1$ dimensions can be represented as vacuum BHs with an integrable singularity in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory for $d=5$ and in cubic gravity for $d=7$. Meanwhile, the vacuum solution in quartic gravity is described as a vacuum RBH with a nontrivial hyperboloidal cross-section. For all the aforementioned cases, we have determined the conditions that the parameters in the solutions must satisfy. Remarkably, in all discussed cases, there is no presence of an internal horizon near a potentially unstable de Sitter core.

Abstract:Wormhole solutions in gravitational theories typically require exotic matter. Here we present a wormhole solution to the field equations of Einsteinian Cubic Gravity -- a phenomenological competitor to general relativity that includes terms cubic in the curvature -- that has no matter, exotic or otherwise. These purely gravitational wormhole geometries are asymptotically AdS but contain a geometric deficit at infinity. The deficit, interpreted as a global monopole, plays an essential role in our construction. We find that our wormhole solution satisfies traversablility criteria. We also find, for different parameters, a range of possible wormhole solutions.

Abstract:We report a family of self-similar exact solutions in General Relativity. The solutions are found in a Painleve-Gullstrand coordinate system but can also be transformed smoothly into a diagonal form. The solutions represent a gravitational collapse leading to three possible outcomes, depending on the parameter space: (i) a collapse followed by a bounce and dispersal of the clustered matter distribution, (ii) a rapid collapse followed by a bounce and an eventual re-collapse, and (iii) a standard collapse leading to zero proper volume. Profiles of the energy conditions are studied for all of the scenarios, and it is noted that a bounce is usually associated with a violation of the Null Energy Condition. It is found that more than one null surfaces (apparent horizons) can develop during the collapse. We also discuss that for a general metric tensor having a conformal symmetry, some regions of the parameter space allows a formation of null throat, much like a wormhole. Matching the metric with a Schwarzschild metric in Painleve–Gullstrand form leads to the geodesic equation for a zero energy falling particle in the exterior.

Abstract:A bstract We consider spatially homogeneous Lifshitz black hole solutions in five dimensional higher derivative gravity theories, which can be possible near horizon geometries of some systems that are interesting in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. We show the solutions belonging to the nine Bianchi classes in the pure R 2 gravity. We find that these black holes have zero entropy at non-zero temperatures and this property is the same as the case of BTZ black holes in new massive gravity at the critical point. In the most general quadratic curvature gravity theories, we find new solutions in Bianchi Type I and Type IX cases.

Abstract:We prove uniform finite-time existence of solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations in polarized U(1) symmetry which have uniformly positive incoming $H^1$ energy supported on an arbitrarily small set in the 2 + 1 spacetime obtained by quotienting by the U(1) symmetry. We also construct a subclass of solutions for which the energy remains concentrated (along a U(1) family of geodesics) throughout its evolution. These results rely on three innovations: a direct treatment of the 2 + 1 Einstein equations in a null geodesic gauge, a novel parabolic scaling of the Einstein equations in this gauge, and a new Klainerman-Sobolev inequality on rectangular strips.

Abstract:We prove there is a unique vacuum solution in split-signature spacetimes with Kleinian SO(2,1) spherical symmetry. We extend our analysis to accommodate a positive or negative cosmological constant and we prove the Kleinian spherically symmetric solutions to Einstein's equation are locally isomorphic to the split-signature analogs of Schwarzschild–(anti)-de Sitter or Nariai spacetimes. Our analysis provides a Kleinian extension of Birkhoff's theorem to metrics with split signature. Some exact anisotropic cosmological solutions of a simple nonlocal de Sitter gravity

Abstract:It was shown recently that a very simple nonlocal de Sitter gravity model contains exact vacuum cosmological solution which mimics dark energy and dark matter in flat space. Some other interesting solutions have been also found. In this paper we proceed with finding several new exact cosmological solutions which belong to Bianchi I space. These solutions are simple generalizations of solutions previously found in the FLRW case of the same nonlocal de Sitter gravity model. Obtained results are discussed.

Existence and absence of Killing horizons in static solutions with symmetries

Abstract:Without specifying a matter field nor imposing energy conditions, we study Killing horizons in $n(\ge 3)$-dimensional static solutions in general relativity with an $(n-2)$-dimensional Einstein base manifold. Assuming linear relations $p_{\rm r}\simeq\chi_{\rm r} \rho$ and $p_2\simeq\chi_{\rm t} \rho$ near a Killing horizon between the energy density $\rho$, radial pressure $p_{\rm r}$, and tangential pressure $p_2$ of the matter field, we prove that any non-vacuum solution satisfying $\chi_{\rm r}<-1/3$ ($\chi_{\rm r}\ne -1$) or $\chi_{\rm r}>0$ does not admit a horizon as it becomes a curvature singularity. For $\chi_{\rm r}=-1$ and $\chi_{\rm r}\in[-1/3,0)$, non-vacuum solutions admit Killing horizons, on which there exists a matter field only for $\chi_{\rm r}=-1$ and $-1/3$, which are of the Hawking-Ellis type~I and type~II, respectively. Differentiability of the metric on the horizon depends on the value of $\chi_{\rm r}$, and non-analytic extensions beyond the horizon are allowed for $\chi_{\rm r}\in[-1/3,0)$. In particular, solutions can be attached to the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini-type vacuum solution at the Killing horizon in at least a $C^{1,1}$ regular manner without a lightlike thin shell. We generalize some of those results in Lovelock gravity with a maximally symmetric base manifold.

Abstract:In spherical symmetry, the total energy-momentum tensor near the apparent horizon is identified up to a single function of time from two assumptions: a trapped region forms at a finite time of a distant observer, and values of two curvature scalars are finite at its boundary. In general relativity, this energy-momentum tensor leads to the unique limiting form of the metric. The null energy condition is violated across the apparent horizon and is satisfied in the vicinity of the inner apparent horizon. As a result, homogenous collapse models cannot describe the formation of a black hole. Properties of matter change discontinuously immediately after formation of a trapped region. Absolute values of comoving density, pressure, and flux coincide at the apparent horizon. Thus, collapse of ideal fluids cannot lead to the formation of black holes. Moreover, these three quantities diverge at the expanding apparent horizon, producing a regular (i.e., finite curvature) firewall. This firewall is incompatible with quantum energy inequalities, implying that trapped regions, once formed at some finite time of a distant observer, cannot grow.

Supersonic Gravitational Collapse for Non-Isentropic Gaseous Stars

Abstract:We show the existence of a new class of initially smooth spherically symmetric self-similar solutions to the non-isentropic Euler-Poisson system. These solutions exhibit supersonic gravitational implosion in the sense that the density blows-up in finite time while the fluid velocity remains supersonic. In particular, they occupy a portion of the phase space that is far from the recently constructed isentropic self-similar implosion. At the heart of our proof is the presence of a two-parameter scaling invariance and the reduction of the problem to a non-autonomous system of ordinary differential equations. We use the requirement of smoothness of the flow as a selection principle that constrains the choice of scaling indices. An important consequence of our analysis is that for all the solutions we construct, the polytropic index $\gamma$ is strictly bigger than $\frac{4}{3}$, which is in sharp contrast to the known results in the isentropic case.
