Abstract:This paper analyzes the main contradictions and challenges in the development of China's alumina industry in terms of resources, production costs and environmental governance, compares the production cost of China's alumina with that of other countries, analyzes the pollutants produced in the production process of alumina, and discusses the related problems. On this basis, this paper puts forward the strategies and suggestions for the sustainable development of China's alumina industry, that is, adopt advanced technology and equipment to solve the problem of bauxite resource shortage; Improve safety protection facilities to prevent accidents and hazards; Solve the problem of deep purification and standard discharge of alumina industrial flue gas; Implement the safe storage and resource utilization of alumina industrial solid waste; Increase the depth recovery efficiency of waste heat in alumina production; Implement all safety management measures and strengthen the ability to prevent accidents. By adopting the above strategies, the sustainable development strategy of China's alumina industry can be realized.
Quantifying China's Iron and Steel Industry's CO2 Emissions and Environmental Health Burdens: A Pathway to Sustainable Transformation

Abstract:Assessing the iron and steel industry's (ISI) impact on climate change and environmental health is vital, particularly in China, where this sector significantly influences air quality and CO2 emissions. There is a lack of comprehensive analyses that consider the environmental and health burdens of manufacturing processes for ISI enterprises. Here, we present an integrated emission inventory that encompasses air pollutants and CO2 emissions from 811 ISI enterprises and five key manufacturing processes in 2020. Our analysis shows that sintering is the primary source of air pollution in the ISI. It contributes 71% of SO2, 73% of NOx, and 54% of PM2.5 emissions. On the other hand, 81% of total CO2 emissions come from blast furnaces. Significantly, the contributions of ISI have resulted in an increase of 3.6 mu g m(-3) in national population-weighted PM2.5 concentration, causing approximately 59,035 premature deaths in 2020. Emissions from Hebei, Jiangsu, Shandong, Shanxi, and Inner Mongolia provinces contributed to 48% of PM2.5-related deaths in China. Moreover, the transportation of air pollutants across provincial borders highlights a concerning trend of environmental health inequality. Based on the research findings, it is crucial for ISI manufacturers to prioritize the removal of outdated production capacities and adopt energy-efficient and advanced techniques, along with ultra-low emission technologies. This is particularly important for those manufacturers with substantial environmental footprints. These transformative actions are essential in mitigating the environmental and health impacts in the affected regions. Abstract:Coal fly ash, an industrial by-product, is derived from coal combustion in thermal power plants. It is one of the most complex and abundant of anthropogenic materials, and its improper disposal has become an environmental concern and resulted in a waste of recoverable resources. Coal fly ash is rich in alumina, making it a potential substitute for bauxite. With the diminishing reserves of bauxite resources as well as the increasing demand for alumina, recovering alumina from fly ash has attracted extensive attentions. The present review first describes the alumina recovery history and technologies, and then focuses on the recovery status in China. Finally, the current status of fly ash recycling and directions for future research are considered.
Spatiotemporal evolution and driving factors for GHG emissions of aluminum industry in China

Abstract:China's aluminum (Al) production has released a huge amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As one of the biggest country of primary Al production, China must mitigate its overall GHG emission from its Al industry so that the national carbon neutrality target can be achieved. Under such a background, the study described in this paper conducts a dynamic material flow analysis to reveal the spatiotemporal evolution features of Al flows in China from 2000 to 2020. Decomposition analysis is also performed to uncover the driving factors of GHG emission generated from the Al industry. The major findings include the fact that China's primary Al production center has transferred to the western region; the primary Al smelting and carbon anode consumption are the most carbonintensive processes in the Al life cycle; the accumulative GHG emission from electricity accounts for 78.14% of the total GHG emission generated from the Al industry; China's current Al recycling ratio is low although the corresponding GHG emission can be reduced by 93.73% if all the primary Al can be replaced by secondary Al; and the total GHG emission can be reduced by 88.58% if major primary Al manufacturing firms are transferred from Inner Mongolia to Yunnan. Based upon these findings and considering regional disparity, several policy implications are proposed, including promotion of secondary Al production, support of clean electricity penetration, and relocation of the Al industry.

Abstract:The booming development of the aluminum industry has greatly contributed to China's economic development, but it also imposed a burden on the environment. Recent technological development has emerged various methods for aluminum production to improve production efficiency and reduce environmental impacts, while reducing energy intensity in traditional production practices can also lower emissions and remain low production costs. However, which approach that performs better in achieving economic benefits and reducing environmental impacts is unclear. This study analyzed six major aluminum production methods based on alumina production process and energy mix. Environmental parameters were derived based on life cycle assessment, and economic cost parameters were formed by building an economic benefits model. This paper then analyzed the potential of achieving economic benefits and environmental impacts reduction for each method using life cycle assessment and principal component analysis. Finally, the greenhouse gas emissions from the aluminum industry in 2030 based on scenario analysis was analyzed. We found that Bayer process-hydropower method performs the best in reducing environmental impacts and achieving economic benefits, while the sinter process-thermal power method performs the worst. The effect of reducing emissions by changing the energy mix (75%) was more significant than that by changing the alumina production process (up to 10%). Furthermore, we used scenario analysis to expand the capacity share of the Bayer process-hydropower method with optimal comprehensive benefit increased by 22.2%, the cost of electricity decreased by 313.77 CNY/t-Al, and the global warming potential was reduced by nearly 1/3. Thus, our results reveal the significant benefits of the Chinese government's push to increase the share of clean energy applications in the aluminum industry.

The Development Scenarios and Environmental Impacts of China's Aluminum Industry: Implications of Import and Export Transition

Abstract:Aluminum is widely used in buildings, transportation, and home appliances. However, primary aluminum production is a resource, energy, and emission-intensive industrial process. As the world's largest aluminum producer, the aluminum industry (ALD) in China faces tremendous pressure on environmental protection. This study combines material flow analysis and scenario analysis to investigate the potential of resource conservation, energy saving, and emission reduction for China's ALD under the import and export trade transition. The results show China's per capita aluminum stock will follow a logistic curve to reach 415 kg/capita by 2030. However, unlike the continued build-up of stocks, domestic demand for aluminum will peak at 44 million tons (MT) in 2025 and fall to 36 MT in 2030. The scenario analysis reveals that China's primary aluminum output could peak in 2025 at around 52 MT if the restrictions are not implemented (Scenario A). Compared to Scenario A, demand for primary aluminum is effectively limited in Scenarios B and C where exports of aluminum products are reduced. Correspondingly, both scenarios also have obvious benefits in reducing the environmental load of China's ALD. Besides, if hydropower used in aluminum electrolysis increases to 25% by 2030, the total GHG emissions in 2030 will be reduced by 12%. Therefore, promoting import/export and energy mix transformation can become an essential means for the sustainable development of China's ALD.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Over the past decade, the global aluminum industry has undergone profound changes, particularly as a result of China emerging as a powerhouse production base, accounting for approximately 60% of global smelting capacity by the end of 2018. To explore the potential energy conservation and CO2 emission reduction of China's aluminum industry during 2010–2050, we developed a comprehensive assessment framework based on quasi-dynamic material flow analysis, energy consumption, and CO2 emission models. Four scenarios were designed to outline future energy savings and CO2 emission mitigation in China's aluminum industry. The results show that China's aluminum demand will consistently increase from 22.67 Mt in 2010 to 51.20 Mt in 2050. In the short term, China's aluminum industry cannot achieve a completely circular economy without implementing new policies. The results also indicate that the energy intensity and CO2 emissions per ton of aluminum will gradually decline under the multiple effects of technology promotion and structure adjustment. Under all four scenarios, the strengthened policy (STP) scenario has the least total energy consumption (TEC), reaching 46.57 Mtce and 24.11 Mtce in 2030 and 2050, respectively. The effect of energy conservation and emission reductions brought about by adjusting the production structure was far higher than the increasing technology penetration rate.

Abstract:Aluminum is an important lightweight and high-value metal that is widely used in the transportation, construction, and military industries . China is the largest producer of Al in the world, and vast quantities of Al dross (ash) are generated and stored every year. Aluminum dross contains fluoride and heavy metals, and easily reacts with water and acid to produce stimulating, toxic, and explosive gases. Owing to a lack of developed technologies, most of this dross cannot be safely treated, resulting in a waste of resources and serious environmental and ecological risks. This review briefly describes the distribution and proportions of bauxite deposits in China, the Al extraction process, and the hazardous solid waste that is generated. It also discusses the comprehensive treatments for Al dross, including the hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy recovery processes, and reuse of Al, Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , and chloride salts as a summarized comparison of their advantages and disadvantages. In particular, this review focuses on the efforts to analyze the relationship between existing processes and the attempts to establish a comprehensive technology to treat Al dross. Additionally, areas for future research are suggested, which may provide new ideas for the closed-loop treatment of Al dross.

Abstract:As the world's largest producer and consumer of ten kinds of non-ferrous metals, China's non-ferrous metals industry accounts for 4.39% of total national energy consumption. It is an energy-intensive industry that faces great challenges related to energy consumption and global climate change. Applying energy-efficient technologies may be a useful strategy for the development of this industry. This paper establishes a technology system within the LEAP model to estimate energy conservation and CO2 emissions abatement potentials for China's non-ferrous metals industry in 2010-2020. Five smelting processes are considered for aluminum, copper, lead, zinc and magnesium. Three scenarios (BAU, LT and HT) are set to simulate different technological policies and calculate abatement potentials. The results indicate that energy consumption and CO2 emissions will continue to grow rapidly as the sector develops. Energy consumption under the BAU scenario will reach 88.15 million tce in 2020,61% higher than in 2010.A maximum of 7.73 million tce of energy can be saved and 36.86 million tons of CO2 can be reduced under the strongest technology policy scenario (HT) compared to BAU. Energy conservation in aluminum, magnesium, zinc, copper and lead smelting processes account for 72.9%, 13.2%, 10.2%, 2.6% and 1.1% respectively of the total energy savings potential, while the CO2 abatement potential mostly comes from aluminum, which accounts for 86% of the total. Targeted technology policies should be made for different metals: in the aluminum sector for instance, large scale aluminum electrolytic cells above 300 kA, new cathode structures and intelligent optimization control technologies could be employed; in the zinc industry, direct leaching and long period electric-deposition could be utilized; in the magnesium industry, new types of kilns could be introduced. Greenhouse gas contribution and emission reduction potential prediction of China's aluminum industry

Abstract:The aluminum industry, with its traditionally high energy consumption, high emissions and high pollution, is facing increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in China. This study analyzes the trajectory and characteristics of GHG emissions during the lifecycle of China's aluminum industry (CAI) from 2011 to 2020, and identifies key driving factors affecting the changes in GHG emissions from CAI. The results indicate that the GHG emissions of CAI mainly come from indirect emissions generated by electricity production (over 69 %). Electrolytic aluminum is the largest sub process of GHG emissions in CAI. In addition, the total energy consumption effect is the main driving factor for the increase in GHG emissions from CAI. On this basis, emission reduction measures are proposed, the economic benefits and applicability of various emission reduction measures are analyzed, and the grey prediction model GM (1,1) is used to predict the GHG emission reduction potential of CAI in 2030. According to analysis, the GHG emission reduction efficiency of CAI is expected to reach 86 % by 2030, and can produce an annual economic benefit of 2.93 × 10 9 RMB. This study will provide a theoretical basis for GHG emission reduction in CAI and even the global aluminum industry (GAI).

Abstract:Dirty-acid wastewater (DW) originating from the non-ferrous metal smelting industry is characterized by a high concentration of H 2 SO 4 and As. During the chemical precipitation treatment, a significant volume of arsenic-containing slag is generated, leading to elevated treatment expenses. The imperative to address DW with methods that are cost-effective, highly efficient, and safe is underscored. This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of three typical methods to DW treatment, encompassing technical principles, industrial application flow charts, research advancements, arsenic residual treatment, and economic considerations. Notably, the sulfide method emerges as a focal point due to its minimal production of arsenic residue and the associated lowest overall treatment costs. Moreover, in response to increasingly stringent environmental protection policies targeting new pollutants and carbon emissions reduction, the paper explores the evolving trends in DW treatment. These trends encompass rare metal and sulfuric acid recycling, cost-effective H 2 S production methods, and strategies for reducing, safely disposing of, and harnessing resources from arsenic residue.

Abstract:China is the world's largest producer of primary aluminum and its production will continue to grow in the future. It is very important to optimize the technological development pathway for the low-carbon transition of primary aluminum industry given its continuing increasing energy consumption and carbon emissions. To that end, this study develops a bottom-up model, named National Energy Technology- Aluminum (NET-AL) model. The energy saving potential for three types of strategies are evaluated, including eliminating backward-production capacity, promoting advanced technology, and optimizing industry power structure. The key results are as follows: (1) All emission reduction strategies indicate that CO2 emissions could peak in 2025, and the cumulative emission reduction potential is 5.3% by 2050; (2) The advanced technologies have significant effects on energy saving. The role of promoting seven-effect tube evaporation technology and energy-saving combination technology of new conductivity structure are emphasized. Optimizing the power structure can effectively reduce indirect CO2 emissions, in which the largest penetration of hydropower-aluminum joint production is suggested to be 6.5%; (3) The joint impacts of the discussed three strategies, could not only lead to energy saving, but also brings economic benefits for China's primary aluminum industry.

Abstract:The booming of China's primary aluminum industry (PAI) brought substantial emissions of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and greenhouse gases (GHGs). By using life cycle assessment and bottom-up method, a comprehensive emission inventory for multiple typical HAPs and GHGs from China's PAI during 1990-2021 was developed and explored for the first time. Our results show that spatial-temporal emissions trends of HAPs and GHGs from PAI in China diverse significantly. The conventional atmospheric pollutants (including SO2, NOx and particulate matter (PM)), fluoride and per fluorinated compound (PFCs) had been effectively suppressed since 2007 due to the implementation of various environmental policies; while, emissions of CO, VOCs, CH4, heavy metals and CO2 had increased at different rates unexpectedly. From the spatial distribution perspective, Henan, Shanxi, Guizhou, Guangxi and Shandong dominated the emissions of PAI in China, but with consumption expansion and environmental constrains, PAI plants start to expand to northwest and southwest areas where are richer in sufficient and cheaper power resources, thus bring significant emission increasing there, particular for conventional atmospheric pollutants in northwest and CO and VOCs in southwest China. By underlying driving forces of PAI emissions, results show that end-of-pipe control measures at various stages have played different roles to reduce emissions of the concerned species at each period, but its reduction effect diminished gradually. Future reduction should seek underlying changes in production technology and energy system. Under constrains of environmental regulation and resource endowment, promoting circular economic development for PAI would be a key strategy to reduce HAPs and GHGs emissions simultaneously in PAI.

Abstract:To support high-quality carbon peaking, a scenario analysis of carbon peaking pathways according to an industrial chain perspective considering both material and part production needs exploring. As a critical segment in the aluminum industrial chain, aluminum casting industry was focused on in this paper. A bottom-up scenario analysis approach was proposed for the carbon emission simulation of China's aluminum casting industry, including: (1) a carbon emission assessment model based on material flow analysis and life-cycle assessment, (2) key influence factor selection and variation scenario prediction, (3) static and dynamic scenario analysis, and (4) driving factor decomposition analysis. Key findings are as follows: (1) China's aluminum casting industry accounted for about 1.1% of the national carbon emissions in 2020; (2) the production stage accounted for around 15% of the total carbon emissions of China's aluminum casting industry in 2020; (3) carbon peaking probabilities before 2030 for the static and dynamic scenario analysis are around 60% and 35%, respectively; and (4) the carbon peaking result differences in whether considering the production stage are about 20% for the static simulation and average 40% for the dynamic simulation. These findings effectively support the formulation of a high-quality carbon peaking pathway.

Abstract:Primary aluminum is widely used because of its excellent performance, and world primary aluminum production has increased 2.73 times in the past 20 years, with China increasing up to 13.9 times. China's primary aluminum industry (CPAI) is a high greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting industry and is facing a grim situation to reduce emissions. Therefore, quantifying the GHG emissions of CPAI and exploring future development trends are beneficial to the sustainable development of CPAI. In this study, the emission factor method was used to calculate the GHG emissions of CPAI from 2000 to 2020. The result shows that GHG emissions increased dramatically from 65.85 Mt CO 2 -eq in 2000 to 460.32 Mt CO 2 -eq in 2020, a seven-fold increase. GHG emissions from aluminum smelting were 363.62 Mt CO 2 -eq in 2020, which was the largest sub-process of emissions in CPAI, with a high share of 79%. Electricity emissions were the largest source of GHG emissions, accounting for more than 60%, with a maximum of 70.5%. The intrinsic drivers of GHG emissions were explored by the Log-Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) method, and the results showed that primary aluminum production was the largest driver of GHG emissions promotion, while energy intensity was the most important driver of GHG emissions suppression in the last decade. In this study, a modified "S" shaped mathematical model was used to predict the primary aluminum production, which laid the foundation for the subsequent analysis of emission reduction potential. On this basis, five types of scenarios were set based on the results of the driving force analysis. Finally, based on the results of our analysis, we propose strategies for low-carbon development in the primary aluminum industry, including the use of clean energy, and the development of new low-carbon technologies.

Abstract:Harmless disposal and reutilization of electroplating sludge (ES) attract growing interests due to the high content of heavy metals, which requires economical-affordable and environmentally friendly processing technologies. Main reutilization alternatives in China, i.e., acid leaching, bioleaching, smelting, ironmaking blast furnace co-processing (IBFC), and cement kiln co-processing (CKC), were evaluated and compared via life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC) methods. In addition, the heavy metal recovery potential of these scenarios was also evaluated to focus on the sustainable use of metal resources. LCA results show that acid leaching outperforms other scenarios due to the environmental benefits originating from recovering heavy metals, while smelting exhibits the worst due to high energy consumption. The environmental contribution analysis reveals that the product nickel sulfate has a significant positive impact on acid leaching and bioleaching scenarios, and energy consumption is the key factor for smelting, IBFC, and CKC. LCC results show that bioleaching outperforms others, while CKC performs the worst because only inorganic materials are utilized. Bioleaching has the lowest externality cost while CKC has the highest. The heavy metal recovery assessment indicates that bioleaching exhibits the greatest potential with recovery rates of 99%, 99%, 93%, 96%, and 95% for Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, and Fe, respectively. In contrast, the target heavy metal recovery rate for both acid leaching and smelting is 93%. Acid leaching and bioleaching scenarios are more advantageous from a comprehensive comparison.

Abstract:The development of secondary aluminum dross (SAD) has become a hot topic to deal with aluminum resource scarcity and landfill risk as hazardous waste. This study first compares the environmental impact, resource consumption, and economic performance of four emerging SAD reutilization methods with an integrated hybrid life cycle assessment (IHLCA). The results show that IHLCA captures larger environmental and economic impacts than process LCA (PLCA), especially for midpoint indicators, such as human toxicity potential, acidification potential, freshwater aquatic ecotoxicity. Furthermore, multi-component recovery from SAD is not always the best choice. The multi-component recovery scenario of SAD-to-alumina with alkali has the smallest environmental impact and resource consumption, while SAD-to-PAC with acid is the worst due to the massive use of HCl. Particularly, SAD-to-calcium aluminate with single-component recovery stands out due to its best economic performance. The given results provide new perspective on making a sustainable decision for SAD recovery industrialization.
