Abstract:The regularity of refinable functions is an important issue in all multiresolution analysis and has a strong impact on applications of wavelets to image processing, geometric and numerical solutions of elliptic partial differential equations. The purpose of this paper is to characterize the regularity of refinable functions with exponentially decaying masks and a dilation matrix whose eigenvalues have the same modulus. The main results of this paper are really extensions of some results in Cohen et al. (1999) [5], Jia (1999) [17] and Lorentz and Oswald (2000) [28].

Abstract:We consider digit systems $(A,\mathcal{D})$, where $ A \in \mathbb{Q}^{n\times n}$ is an expanding matrix and the digit set $\mathcal{D}$ is a suitable subset of $\mathbb{Q}^n$. To such a system, we associate a self-affine set $\mathcal{F} = \mathcal{F}(A,\mathcal{D})$ that lives in a certain representation space $\mathbb{K}$. If $A$ is an integer matrix, then $\mathbb{K} = \mathbb{R}^n$, while in the general rational case $\mathbb{K}$ contains an additional solenoidal factor. We give a criterion for $\mathcal{F}$ to have positive Haar measure, i.e., for being a rational self-affine tile. We study topological properties of $\mathcal{F}$ and prove some tiling theorems. Our setting is very general in the sense that we allow $(A,\mathcal{D})$ to be a nonstandard digit system. A standard digit system $(A,\mathcal{D})$ is one in which we require $\mathcal{D}$ to be a complete system of residue class representatives w.r.t. a certain naturally chosen residue class ring. Our tools comprise the Frobenius normal form and character theory of locally compact abelian groups.

Abstract:We define the notion of "projective" multiresolution analyses, for which, by definition, the initial space corresponds to a finitely generated projective module over the algebra $C(\btn)$ of continuous complex-valued functions on an $n$-torus. The case of ordinary multi-wavelets is that in which the projective module is actually free. We discuss the properties of projective multiresolution analyses, including the frames which they provide for $L^2(\brn)$. Then we show how to construct examples for the case of any diagonal $2 \times 2$ dilation matrix with integer entries, with initial module specified to be any fixed finitely generated projective $C(\mathbb T^2)$-module. We compute the isomorphism classes of the corresponding wavelet modules.

Abstract:We continue the study of projective module wavelet frames corresponding to diagonal dilation matrices on $\mathbb R^n$ with integer entries, focusing on the construction of a projective multi-resolution analysis corresponding to dilations whose domains are finitely generated projective modules over continuous complex-valued functions on $n$-tori, $n\geq 3$. We are able to generalize some of these results to dilation matrices that are conjugates of integral diagonal dilation matrices by elements of $SL(n,\mathbb Z).$ We follow the method proposed by the author and M. Rieffel, and are able to come up with examples of non-free projective module wavelet frames which can be described via this construction. As an application of our results, in the case $n=3,$ when the dilation matrix is a constant multiple of the identity, we embed every finitely generated module as an initial module.

Moreover, we establish a theory to construct an orthonormal Haar wavelet base in L-2(H-d) by using self-similar tilings for the acceptable dilations on the Heisenberg group.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is mainly to build a new representation-theoretic realization of finite root systems through the so-called Frobenius-type triangular matrix algebras by the method of reflection functors over any field. Finally, we give an analog of APR-tilting module for this class of algebras. The major conclusions contains the known results as special cases, e.g. that for path algebras over an algebraically closed field and for path algebras with relations from symmetrizable cartan matrices. Meanwhile, it means the corresponding results for some other important classes of algebras, that is, the path algebras of quivers over Frobenius algebras and the generalized path algebras endowed by Frobenius algebras at vertices.

Abstract:A multiresolution analysis for a Hilbert space realizes the Hilbert space as the direct limit of an increasing sequence of closed subspaces. In a previous paper, we showed how, conversely, direct limits could be used to construct Hilbert spaces which have multiresolution analyses with desired properties. In this paper, we use direct limits, and in particular the universal property which characterizes them, to construct wavelet bases in a variety of concrete Hilbert spaces of functions. Our results apply to the classical situation involving dilation matrices on $L^2(\R^n)$, the wavelets on fractals studied by Dutkay and Jorgensen, and Hilbert spaces of functions on solenoids.

Abstract:Let $M$ be the space of real $n\times m$ matrices which can be identified with the Euclidean space $R^{nm}$. We introduce continuous wavelet transforms on $M$ with a multivalued scaling parameter represented by a positive definite symmetric matrix. These transforms agree with the polar decomposition on $M$ and coincide with classical ones in the rank-one case $m=1$. We prove an analog of Calderon's reproducing formula for $L^2$-functions and obtain explicit inversion formulas for the Riesz potentials and Radon transforms on $M$. We also introduce continuous ridgelet transforms associated to matrix planes in $M$. An inversion formula for these transforms follows from that for the Radon transform.

Abstract:This note aims to study the iteration theory of noncommutative self-maps of bounded matrix convex domains. We prove a version of the Denjoy-Wolff theorem for the row ball and the maximal quantization of the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^d$. For more general bounded matrix convex sets, we prove a version of Wolff's theorem inspired by the results of Abate. Lastly, we use iteration and fixed point theory to generalize the commutative results of Davidson, Ramsey, and Shalit to quotients of the free semigroup algebra by WOT closed ideals.

Characterization of self-affine tile digit sets on $\mathbb{R}^n$

Abstract:Let $R$ be an $n\times n$ expanding matrix with integral entries. A fundamental question in the fractal tiling theory is to understand the structure of the digit set $\mathcal{D}\subset\mathbb{Z}^n$ so that the integral self-affine set $T(R,\mathcal{D})$ is a translational tile on $\mathbb{R}^n$ In this paper, we introduce a notion of skew-product-form digit set which is a very general class of tile digit sets. Especially, we show that in the one-dimensional case, if $T(b,\mathcal{D})$ is a self-similar tile, then there exists $m\geq 1$ such that $$\mathcal{D}_m=\mathcal{D}+b\mathcal{D}+\cdots+b^{m-1}\mathcal{D}$$ is a skew-product-form digit set. Notice that $T(b,\mathcal{D})=T(b^m,\mathcal{D}_m)$, in some sense, we completely characterize the self-similar tiles in $\mathbb{R}^1$ As an application, we establish that all self-similar tiles $T(b,\mathcal{D})$ where $b=p^{\alpha}q^{\beta}$ contains at most two prime factors are spectral sets in $\mathbb{R}^1$.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a $3\times 3$ integer matrix which is expanding in the sense that each of its eigenvalues is greater than $1$ in modulus and let $\mathcal{D} \subset \mathbb{Z}^3$ be a digit set containing $|\det M|$ elements. Then the unique nonempty compact set $T=T(M,\mathcal{D})$ defined by the set equation $MT=T+\mathcal{D}$ is called an integral self-affine tile if its interior is nonempty. If $\mathcal{D}$ is of the form $\mathcal{D}=\{0,v,\ldots, (|\det M|-1)v\}$ we say that $T$ has a collinear digit set. The present paper is devoted to the topology of integral self-affine tiles with collinear digit sets. In particular, we prove that a large class of these tiles is homeomorphic to a closed $3$-dimensional ball. Moreover, we show that in this case $T$ carries a natural CW complex structure that is defined in terms of the intersections of $T$ with its neighbors in the lattice tiling $\{T+z\,:\, z\in \mathbb{Z}^3\}$ induced by $T$. This CW complex structure is isomorphic to the CW complex defined by the truncated octahedron.

Abstract:We give an equivariant version of Packer and Rieffel's theorem on sufficient conditions for the existence of orthonormal wavelets in projective multiresolution analyses. The scaling functions that generate a projective multiresolution analysis are supposed to be invariant with respect to some finite group action. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of wavelets with similar invariance.

Abstract:A traditional wavelet is a special case of a vector in a separable Hilbert space that generates a basis under the action of a system of unitary operators defined in terms of translation and dilation operations. A Coxeter/fractal-surface wavelet is obtained by defining fractal surfaces on foldable figures, which tesselate the embedding space by reflections in their bounding hyperplanes instead of by translations along a lattice. Although both theories look different at their onset, there exist connections and communalities which are exhibited in this semi-expository paper. In particular, there is a natural notion of a dilation-reflection wavelet set. We prove that dilation-reflection wavelet sets exist for arbitrary expansive matrix dilations, paralleling the traditional dilation-translation wavelet theory. There are certain measurable sets which can serve simultaneously as dilation-translation wavelet sets and dilation-reflection wavelet sets, although the orthonormal structures generated in the two theories are considerably different.

Abstract:In this paper we extend the results in [Ra] on the representation of the Hecke algebra, determined by the matrix coefficients of a projective, unitary representation, in the discrete series of representations of the ambient group, to a more general, vector valued case. This method is used to analyze the traces of the Hecke operators. We construct representations of the Hecke algebra of a group $G$, relative to an almost normal subgroup $\Gamma$, into the von Neumann algebra of the group $G$, tensor matrices. The representations we obtain are a lifting of the Hecke operators to this larger algebra. By summing up the coefficients of the terms in the representation one obtains the classical Hecke operators. These representations were used in the scalar case in [Ra], to find an alternative representation of the Hecke operators on Maass forms, and hence to reformulate the Ramanujan Petersson conjectures as a problem on the angle (see e.g. A. Connes's paper [Co] on the generalization of CKM matrix) between two subalgebras of the von Neumann algebra of the group $G$: the image of the representation of the Hecke algebra and the algebra of the almost normal subgroup.

Abstract:All wavelets can be associated to a multiresolution like structure, i.e. an incr easing sequence of subspaces of L^2(R). We consider the interaction of a wavel et and the translation operator in terms of which of the subspaces in this multi resolution like structure are invariant under the translation operator. This ac tion defines the notion of the translation invariance property of order n. In this paper we show that wavelets of all levels of translation invariance exist, first for the classic case of dilation by 2, and then for arbitrary integral di lation factors.

Abstract:Recent results from real algebraic geometry and the theory of polynomial optimization are related in a new framework to the existence question of multivariate tight wavelet frames whose generators have at least one vanishing moment. Namely, several equivalent formulations of the so-called Unitary Extension Principle by Ron and Shen are interpreted in terms of hermitian sums of squares of certain nonnegative trigonometric polynomials and in terms of semi-definite programming. The latter together with the recent results in algebraic geometry and semi-definite programming allow us to answer affirmatively the long standing open question of the existence of such tight wavelet frames in dimension $d=2$; we also provide numerically efficient methods for checking their existence and actual construction in any dimension. We exhibit a class of counterexamples in dimension $d=3$ showing that, in general, the UEP property is not sufficient for the existence of tight wavelet frames. On the other hand we provide stronger sufficient conditions for the existence of tight wavelet frames in dimension $d > 3$ and illustrate our results by several examples.
On vector valued automorphic forms for the Weil representation

Abstract:We develop a theory of vector valued automorphic forms associated to the Weil representation $\omega_f$ and corresponding to vector valued modular forms transforming with the ``finite'' Weil representation $\rho_L$. For each prime $p$ we determine the structure of a vector valued spherical Hecke algebra depending on $\omega_f$, which acts on the space of automorphic forms.

Abstract:It has been a long standing problem to find good symbolic codings for translations on the $d$-dimensional torus that enjoy the beautiful properties of Sturmian sequences like low factor complexity and good local discrepancy properties. Inspired by Rauzy's approach we construct such codings in terms of multidimensional continued fraction algorithms that are realized by sequences of substitutions. In particular, given any exponentially convergent continued fraction algorithm, these sequences lead to renormalization schemes which produce symbolic codings of toral translations and bounded remainder sets at all scales in a natural way. The exponential convergence properties of a continued fraction algorithm can be viewed in terms of a Pisot type condition imposed on an attached symbolic dynamical system. Using this fact, our approach provides a systematic way to confirm purely discrete spectrum results for wide classes of symbolic dynamical systems. Indeed, as our examples illustrate, we are able to confirm the Pisot conjecture for many well-known families of sequences of substitutions. These examples comprise classical algorithms like the Jacobi--Perron, Brun, Cassaigne--Selmer, and Arnoux--Rauzy algorithms. As a consequence, we gain symbolic codings of almost all translations of the $2$-dimensional torus having factor complexity $2n+1$ that are balanced for words, which leads to multiscale bounded remainder sets. Using the Brun algorithm, we also give symbolic codings of almost all $3$-dimensional toral translations having multiscale bounded remainder sets.

Abstract:Let D(Ω,Φ) be the affine homogeneous Siegel domain of type II, whose Silov boundary N is a nilpotent Lie group of step two. In this article, we develop the theory of wavelet analysis on N . By selecting a set of mutual orthogonal wavelets we give a direct sum decomposition of L2(D(Ω,Φ)), the first component A0,0 of which is the Bergman space. Moreover, we study the Radon transform on N , and obtain an inversion formula R−1 = (π)−2dLRL which is an extension of that by Strichartz [R. S. Strichartz, L harmonic analysis and Radon transforms on the Heisenberg group, J. Funct. Anal. 96 (1991), 350–406.]. We devise a subspace of L2(N) on which the Radon transform is a bijection. Using wavelet inverse transform, we establish an inversion formula of the Radon transform in the weak sense.
