Abstract:Laser exposure of gold nanoparticles in aqueous solutions of Uranium salt leads to accelerated decay of U238 nuclei and significant deviation from secular equilibrium. The samples demonstrate the enhanced gamma emission in the range of 54 keV during laser exposure.

Abstract:Experimental results are presented on laser-induced accelerated alpha-decay of Uranium-232 nuclei under laser exposure of Au nanoparticles in aqueous solutions of its salt. It is demonstrated that the decrease of alpha-activity strongly depends on the peak intensity of the laser radiation in the liquid and is highest at several terawatt per square centimeter. The decrease of alpha-activity of the exposed solutions is accompanied by the deviation of gamma-activities of daughter nuclides of Uranium-232 from their equilibrium values. Possible mechanisms of the laser influence on the alpha-activity are discussed on the basis of the amplification of the electric field of laser wave on metallic nanoparticles.
Initiation of nuclear reactions under laser irradiation of Au nanoparticles in the aqueous solution of Uranium salt

Abstract:Laser exposure of suspension of either gold or palladium nanoparticles in aqueous solutions of UO2Cl2 of natural isotope abundance was experimentally studied. Picosecond Nd:YAG lasers at peak power from 1011 to 1013 W/cm2 at the wavelength of 1064 and 355 nm were used as well as a visible-range Cu vapor laser at peak power of 1010 W/cm2. The composition of colloidal solutions before and after laser exposure was analyzed using atomic absorption and gamma spectroscopy between 0.06 and 1 MeV range of photon energy. A real-time gamma-spectroscopy was used to characterize the kinetics of nuclear reactions during laser exposure. It was found that laser exposure initiated nuclear reactions involving both 238U and 235U nuclei via different channels in H2O and D2O. The influence of saturation of both the liquid and nanoparticles by gaseous H2 and D2 on the kinetics of nuclear transformations was found. Possible mechanisms of observed processes are discussed.

Abstract:Metallic surfaces can have unusual effects on fluorophores such as increasing or decreasing the rates of radiative decay and the rates of resonance energy transfer (RET). In the present article we describe the effects of metallic silver island films on the emission spectra, lifetimes, and energy transfer for several fluorophores. The fluorophores are not covalently coupled to the silver islands so that there are a range of fluorophore-to-metal distances. We show that proximity of fluorophores to the silver islands results in increased fluorescence intensity, with the largest enhancement for the lowest-quantum-yield fluorophores. Importantly, the metal-induced increases in intensity are accompanied by decreased lifetimes and increased photostability. These effects demonstrate that the silver islands have increased the radiative decay rates of the fluorophore. For solvent-sensitive fluorophores the emission spectra shifted to shorted wavelengths in the presence of the silver islands, which is consistent with a decrease of the apparent lifetime for fluorophores near the metal islands. We also observed an increased intensity and blue spectral shift for the protein human glyoxalase, which displays a low quantum yield for its intrinsic tryptophan emission. In this case the blue shift is thought to be due to increased emission from a buried low-quantum-yield tryptophan residue. Increased intensities were also observed for the intrinsic emission of the nucleic acid bases adenine and thymine and for single-stranded 15-mers poly(T) and poly(C). And finally, we observed increased RET for donors and acceptors in solution and when bound to double-helical DNA. These results demonstrate that metallic particles can be used to modify the emission from intrinsic and extrinsic fluorophores in biochemical systems.
Electron Relaxation Effect on the Sub-100-fs Laser Interaction with Gold Thin Film.

Abstract:The heating of a gold thin film by a single 10 fs laser pulse is modeled by a combined continuum-atomistic method considering the electron relaxation effect. Numerical results show that the temperature evolution and stress propagation proceed in the same manners as those for the subpicosecond laser irradiation. It is also found that the electron relaxation effect is insignificant and could be considerably overestimated by neglecting the ballistic energy transfer in the film.
Ultrafast Laser-Induced Premelting and Structural Transformation of Gold Nanorod

Abstract:Femtosecond laser irradiation of a gold nanorod has been simulated by a method that couples two-temperature model into molecular dynamics. Numerical results show that the surface premelting occurs prior to the initiation of planar defect and propagates from the surface layer into the inside of nanorod. Pressure relaxation leads to high-frequency temperature oscillation and two-way transformation between fcc and disordered atoms produced by the dynamic stresses. Partial dislocation cores are initiated on the crystal surfaces due to high stresses, and then noticeable planar defects including stacking faults and twin boundaries on {111} close-packed planes are developed. Finally, only parallel twin boundaries are present in the nanorod, showing favorable agreement with the experimental observation.
Wavelength-dependent reflectivity changes on gold at elevated electronic temperatures

Abstract:Upon the excitation by an ultrashort laser pulse the conditions in a material can drastically change, altering its optical properties and therefore the relative amount of absorbed energy, a quan- tity relevant for determining the damage threshold and for developing a detailed simulation of a structuring process. The subject of interest in this work is the d-band metal gold which has an absorption edge marking the transition of free valence electrons and an absorbing deep d-band with bound electrons. Reflectivity changes are observed in experiment over a broad spectral range at ablation conditions. To understand the involved processes the laser excitation is modeled by a com- bination of first principle calculations with a two-temperature model. The description is kept most general and applied to realistically simulate the transfer of the absorbed energy of a Gaussian laser pulse into the electronic system at every point in space at every instance of time. An electronic temperature-dependent reflectivity map is calculated, describing the out of equilibrium reflectivity during laser excitation for photon energies from 0.9 - 6.4 eV, including inter- and intra-band transi- tions and a temperature-dependent damping factor. The main mechanisms are identified explaining the electronic temperature-dependent change in reflectivity: broadening of the edge of the occu- pied/unoccupied states around the chemical potential $\mu$, also leading to a shift of the $\mu$ and an increase of the collision rate of free s/p-band electrons with bound d-band holes.

Abstract:As an important x-ray source, enhancement of x-ray emissions from laser-produced plasmas is imperative for various applications. High-Z Au-Gd mixture targets are proposed to enhance the laser to x-ray conversion efficiency compared to pure Au target. In the experiments, a 1 ns frequency-tripled (351 nm wavelength) laser light was used to obtain an intensity of 3×1014 W/cm2 on the targets. The x-ray spectra, total absolute x-ray emissions of all space, M-band fraction and backscattering from pure Au and Au-Gd mixture have been measured, respectively. It is shown that the absolute laser to x-ray conversion efficiency for the Au-Gd mixture containing 60% gold by atom is 47.7%, which has a 15% enhancement compared with that of the pure Au target. The experimental results are consistent with the radiation hydrodynamic simulations.
Comparison Between Silver and Gold Nanoparticles Prepared by Pulsed Laser Ablation in Distilled Water

Abstract:Noble metals silver and gold nanoparticles were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation of silver and gold metal plates immersed in distilled water. In this work, the effect of the laser pulse fluence on the production of nanoparticles prepared by pulsed laser ablation is investigated. The synthesized nanoparticles are characterized by using X-ray diffraction, UV–Visible absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and room temperature photoluminescence. The UV–Visible absorption spectra of the nanoparticles show sharp absorptions in the visible regions due to surface plasmon resonance oscillations in noble metal nanoparticles. An enhancement in photoluminescence intensity is observed with increasing the laser fluence. It is found that all samples exhibit photoluminescence emission, at room temperature, in the UV–Visible region, due to the recombination of electrons with holes.

Abstract:Intense ultrashort laser pulses can create highly excited matter with extraordinary properties. Experimental and theoretical investigations of these extreme conditions are very complex and usually intertwined. Here, we report on a theoretical approach for the electron scattering rates and the optical properties in gold at elevated temperatures. Our theory is based on the degree of occupancy of the conduction band as well as inputs from ab initio simulations and experimental data. After the electron system has reached a quasi-equilibrium, the occupancy is fully determined by the electron temperature. Thus, our approach covers the important relaxation stage after fast excitations when the two-temperature model can be applied. Being based on the electronic structure of solids, the model is valid for lattice temperatures up to melting but the electron temperature might exceed this limit by far. Our results agree well with recent experimental data for both the collision frequencies and the conductivity of highly excited gold. Scattering of sp -electrons by d -electrons is found to be the dominant damping mechanism at elevated electron temperatures and depends strongly on the number of conduction electrons, hence, revealing the microscopic origin of the conductivity change after heating. The supportive benchmarks with experiments are very valuable as the underlying scattering rates determine a number of other transport, optical and relaxation properties of laser-excited matter.

Energy distribution and quantum yield for photoemission from air-contaminated gold surfaces under UV illumination close to the threshold

Abstract:The kinetic energy distributions of photo-electrons emitted from gold surfaces under illumination by UV-light close to the threshold are measured and analyzed. Samples are prepared as chemically clean through Ar-Ion sputtering and then exposed to atmosphere for variable durations before Quantum Yield measurements are performed after evacuation. During measurements the bias voltage applied to the sample is varied and the resulting emission current measured. Taking the derivative of the current-voltage curve yields the energy distribution which is found to closely resemble the distribution of total energies derived by DuBridge for emission from a free electron gas. We investigate the dependence of distribution shape and width on electrode geometry and contaminant substances adsorbed from the atmosphere, in particular to water and hydro-carbons. Emission efficiency increases initially during air exposure before diminishing to zero on a timescale of several hours, whilst subsequent annealing of the sample restores emissivity. A model fit function, in good quantitative agreement with the measured data, is introduced which accounts for the experiment-specific electrode geometry and an energy dependent transmission coefficient. The impact of large patch potential fields from contact potential drops between sample and sample holder is investigated. The total quantum yield is split into bulk and surface contributions which are tested for their sensitivity to light incidence angle and polarization. Our results are directly applicable to model parameters for the contact-free discharge system onboard the LISA Pathfinder spacecraft.

Abstract:The storage and management of nuclear waste materials require the detection of uranium, but traditional analytical methods are unsuitable for radioactive environments. The enhancement methods of uranium in glass matrices using fiber-optic laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy are still underdeveloped. Using an optical diagnostic system coupled with fast photography, shadowgraphy, and optical emission spectroscopy, the evolution of laser-induced plasma generated from a glass matrix under spatial confinement is studied. The plasma evolution image illustrates the temporal consistency between the compression of plasma width and the enhancement of luminescence intensity. Two enhancements were observed when the plate spacing was smaller than the plasma, which might be due to the high density of the core plasma or a synergistic effect of plasma expansion and shockwave confinement. Under spatial confinement, there is a 3–4-times enhancement in the intensity of uranium spectral lines and a 2–4 times enhancement in the signal-to-noise ratio. Several calibration curves are established under spatial confinement based on U II 409.01 nm, U II 367.01 nm and U I 358.48 nm. The lowest limit of detection (LOD) of uranium reaches 95 ppm, which supports the application of FO-LIBS in the detection of uranium-containing nuclear waste materials.

Abstract:The femtosecond evolution of the electronic temperature of laser-excited gold nanoparticles is measured, by means of ultrafast time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy induced by extreme-ultraviolet radiation pulses. The temperature of the electron gas is deduced by recording and fitting high-resolution photo emission spectra around the Fermi edge of gold nanoparticles providing a direct, unambiguous picture of the ultrafast electron-gas dynamics. These results will be instrumental to the refinement of existing models of femtosecond processes in laterally-confined and bulk condensed-matter systems, and for understanding more deeply the role of hot electrons in technological applications.

Abstract:Nanomaterials can enhance the effect of X-rays, but the mechanisms of enhancement can be complicated. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used here to shed light on enhancement mechanisms by detecting the originally proposed physical enhancement of the effect of Xrays by as-made large gold nanoparticles. Specifically spin trap reagent 5-tertbutoxycarbonyl-5-methyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (BMPO) was used to trap radicals produced in aqueous solutions under X-ray irradiation. Even though only BMPO hydroxyl adducts were detected at the time of EPR measurement, both hydroxyl and superoxide radicals were found to contribute to the enhancement. The measured total enhancement was 0.7-fold per weight percent (wp) of Au in water using unfiltered X-rays. The theoretically predicted physical enhancement is 0.49 fold per wp of gold in water. This information, together with scavenging experimental results and the fact that the G-values are close for both radicals, suggest that hydroxyl and superoxide radicals contributing almost equally to the total measured enhancement. Further, the enhancement was found to be linearly dependent on the amount of large gold nanoparticles in water and no additional radical was produced beyond the amount predicted by type 1 physical enhancement, indicating that hydroxyl or superoxide radicals were not produced via catalytic pathways.

Abstract:Actinides are inherently radioactive; thus, ionizing radiation is emitted by these elements can have profound effects on its surrounding chemical environment through the formation of free radical species. While previous work has noted that the presence of free radicals in the system impacts the redox state of the actinides, there is little atomistic understanding of how these metal cations interact with free radicals. Herein, we explore the effects of radiation (UV and γ) on three U(VI) trinitrate complexes, M[UO2(NO3)3] (where M = K+, Rb+, Cs+), and their respective nitrate salts in the solid state via electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Raman spectroscopy paired with Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods. We find that the alkali salts form nitrate radicals under UV and γ irradiation, but also note the presence of additional degradation products. M[UO2(NO3)3] solids also form nitrate radicals and additional DFT calculations indicate the species corresponds to a change from the bidentate bound nitrate anion into a monodentate NO3• radical. Computational studies also highlight the need to include the second sphere coordination environment around the [UO2(NO3)3]0,1 species to gain agreement between the experimental and predicted EPR signatures.

Abstract:The laser formation of positive and negative ions on a nanostructured metal surface is observed at laser fluence below the plasma formation threshold. The laser radiation energy dependences of the yield of positive and negative Au ions and charged clusters as well as electrons from the laser-induced nanostructures on the surface of gold are obtained at laser fluence below the plasma formation threshold using a pulsed laser with a wavelength of 355 nm and a pulse duration of 0.37 ns. It is shown that the ratio of the signals of positive and negative ions is constant over the entire range of the laser radiation energies, while the ion signal dependence on the laser radiation energy is described by a power function with an exponent of 9. The role of gold nanoparticles with a size of less than 5 nm in the formation of Au ions and charged Au clusters is discussed.

Abstract:Recent experimentally validated alloy design theories have demonstrated nanocrystalline binary alloys that are stable against thermally induced grain growth. An open question is whether such thermal stability also translates to stability under irradiation. In this study, we investigate the response to heavy ion irradiation of a nanocrystalline platinum gold alloy that is known to be thermally stable from previous studies. Heavy ion irradiation was conducted at both room temperature and elevated temperatures on films of nanocrystalline platinum and platinum gold. Using scanning/transmission electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy and automated crystallographic orientation mapping, we observe substantial grain growth in the irradiated area compared to the controlled area beyond the range of heavy ions, as well as compositional redistribution under these conditions, and discuss mechanisms underpinning this instability. These findings highlight that grain boundary stability against one external stimulus, such as heat, does not always translate into grain boundary stability under other stimuli, such as displacement damage.

Abstract:The combination of high atomic number and high oxidation state in UVI materials gives rise to both high X-ray attenuation efficiency and intense green luminescence originating from ligand-to-metal charge transfer. These two features suggest that UVI materials might act as superior X-ray scintillators, but this postulate has remained substantially untested. Now the first observation of intense X-ray scintillation in a uranyl-organic framework (SCU-9) that is observable by the naked eye is reported. Combining the advantage in minimizing the non-radiative relaxation during the X-ray excitation process over those of inorganic salts of uranium, SCU-9 exhibits a very efficient X-ray to green light luminescence conversion. The luminescence intensity shows an essentially linear correlation with the received X-ray intensity, and is comparable with that of commercially available CsI:Tl. SCU-9 possesses an improved X-ray attenuation efficiency (E>20 keV) as well as enhanced radiation resistance and decreased hygroscopy compared to CsI:Tl.

Abstract:Metal nanocrystals exhibit important optoelectronic and photocatalytic functionalities in response to light. These dynamic energy conversion processes have been commonly studied by transient optical probes to date, but an understanding of the atomistic response following photoexcitation has remained elusive. Here, we use femtosecond resolution electron diffraction to investigate transient lattice responses in optically excited colloidal gold nanocrystals, revealing the effects of nanocrystal size and surface ligands on the electron-phonon coupling and thermal relaxation dynamics. First, we uncover a strong size effect on the electron-phonon coupling, which arises from reduced dielectric screening at the nanocrystal surfaces and prevails independent of the optical excitation mechanism (i.e., inter- and intraband). Second, we find that surface ligands act as a tuning parameter for hot carrier cooling. Particularly, gold nanocrystals with thiol-based ligands show significantly slower carrier cooling as compared to amine-based ligands under intraband optical excitation due to electronic coupling at the nanocrystal/ligand interfaces. Finally, we spatiotemporally resolve thermal transport and heat dissipation in photoexcited nanocrystal films by combining electron diffraction with stroboscopic elastic scattering microscopy. Taken together, we resolve the distinct thermal relaxation time scales ranging from 1 ps to 100 ns associated with the multiple interfaces through which heat flows at the nanoscale. Our findings provide insights into optimization of gold nanocrystals and their thin films for photocatalysis and thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:Time-Resolved Laser-Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy (TRLFS) and cryo-TRLFS are sensitive tools for \textit{in situ} speciation of low-level uranium in aqueous samples, including natural waters. To tailor, often ill-conditioned (i.e., leading to ambiguous interpretations), multi-linear analysis, first-principles based theoretical computation (Molecular Dynamics and Quantum Chemistry) of luminescence spectra would be beneficial. We present a methodology to simulate TRLFS and cryo-TRLFS spectra and present vibrationally resolved luminescence spectra for aquo complex [UO$_2$(H$_2$O)$_5$]$^{2+}$(aq). Comparison to experimental data, interpretation of spectra in the terms of a minimal non-redundant set of spectroscopic parameters (peak spacing \omega, the 0' $\rightarrow$ 0 peak position T$_{00}$, envelope shape parameter \Delta R, average peak width \sigma and luminescence life-times) and shifts due to ligand coordination are discussed. The minimum theory-experiment deviation in T$_{00}$ (exp. $\sim$ 20 485 cm$^{-1}$) has been reported for SORECP/TD-DFT with LB$\alpha$ functional - 20 cm$^{-1}$, 90 cm$^{-1}$ and 100 cm$^{-1}$ for different models, a similar level of agreement has been met for \omega$_{gs}$. The RMS along configuration space sampling CMD trajectory for T$_{00}$ corresponds well to \sigma. Preliminary predictivity study for a small set of uranyl complex species and comparison of pseudo-potential (SORECP) and all-electron results for [UO$_2$(H$_2$O)$_5$]$^{2+}$(g) are appended.

Efficient X-ray generation from gold colloidal solutions

Abstract:Hard X-ray generation for Au nanoparticle dispersion was systematically investigated for different particle diameters ranging from 10 to 100 nm with a narrow size distribution of +/- 2%. Scaling law of X-ray generation is close to a 6-photon process before the onset of saturation for excitation by 45 fs laser pulses with central wavelength of 800 nm. This is consistent with bulk plasmon excitation at wavelength ~ 138 nm. The longitudinal E-field component due to nanoparticle focusing is responsible for the excitation of the longitudinal bulk plasmon. The proposed analysis also explains X-ray emission from water breakdown via an electron solvation mechanism at ~6.2 eV. The most efficient emission of X-rays was observed for 40 +/- 10 nm diameter nanoparticles which also had the strongest UV extinction. X-ray emission was the most efficient when induced by pre-chirped 370 +/- 20 fs laser pulses and exhibited the highest intensity at a negative chirp.
