Abstract:We explore the relationship between four-dimensional N=2 quantum field theories and their associated BPS quivers. For a wide class of theories including super-Yang-Mills theories, Argyres-Douglas models, and theories defined by M5-branes on punctured Riemann surfaces, there exists a quiver which implicitly characterizes the field theory. We study various aspects of this correspondence including the quiver interpretation of flavor symmetries, gauging, decoupling limits, and field theory dualities. In general a given quiver describes only a patch of the moduli space of the field theory, and a key role is played by quantum mechanical dualities, encoded by quiver mutations, which relate distinct quivers valid in different patches. Analyzing the consistency conditions imposed on the spectrum by these dualities results in a powerful and novel mutation method for determining the BPS states. We apply our method to determine the BPS spectrum in a wide class of examples, including the strong coupling spectrum of super-Yang-Mills with an ADE gauge group and fundamental matter, and trinion theories defined by M5-branes on spheres with three punctures.

Abstract:We consider regularisation of a Yang-Mills theory by Dimensional Reduction (DRED). In particular, the anomalous dimensions of fermion masses and gauge coupling are computed to four-loop order. We put special emphasis on the treatment of evanescent couplings which appear when DRED is applied to non-supersymmetric theories. We highlight the importance of distinguishing between the evanescent and the real couplings. Considering the special case of a Super-Yang-Mills theory, we find that Dimensional Reduction is sufficient to preserve Supersymmetry in our calculations.

Abstract:We give an explicit gauge invariant, off-shell and local double copy construction of gravity from Yang-Mills theory to quartic order. To this end we use the framework of homotopy algebras, and we identify a rich new algebraic structure associated to color-stripped Yang-Mills theory. This algebra, which is a generalization of a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra, is the underlying structure necessary for double copy. We give a self-contained introduction into these algebras by illustrating them for Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions. We then construct N = 0 supergravity in the form of double field theory in terms of the algebraic Yang-Mills building blocks to quartic order in interactions. As applications of the same universal formula, we re-derive the 4-graviton scattering amplitude and compute a chiral form of the Courant algebroid gauge structure of double field theory.

Abstract:We study the vacuum structure of gauge theories with eight supercharges. It has been recently discovered that in the Higgs branch of $5d$ and $6d$ SQCD theories with eight supercharges, the new massless states, arising when the gauge coupling is taken to infinity, can be described in terms of Coulomb branches of $3d ~\mathcal N=4$ quiver gauge theories. The description of this new phenomenon draws from the ideas discovered in the analysis of nilpotent orbits as Higgs and Coulomb branches of $3d$ theories and promotes the Higgs mechanism known as the Kraft-Procesi transition to the status of a new operation between quivers. This is the quiver subtraction. This paper establishes this operation formally and examines some immediate consequences. One is the extension of the physical realization of Kraft-Procesi transitions from the classical to the exceptional Lie algebras. Another result is the extension from special nilpotent orbits to non-special ones. One further consequence is the analysis of the effect in $5d ~\mathcal N=1$ SQCD of integrating out a massive quark while the gauge coupling remains infinite. In general, the subtraction of quivers sheds light on the different types of singularities within the Coulomb branch and the structure of the massless states that arise at those singular points; including the nature of the new Higgs branches that open up. This allows for a systematic analysis of mixed branches of $3d ~\mathcal N=4$ quivers that do not necessarily have a simple embedding in string theory. The subtraction of two quivers is an extremely simple resource for the theoretical physicist interested in the vacuum structure of gauge theories, and yet its power is so remarkable that is bound to play a crucial role in the coming discoveries of new and exciting physics in $5$ and $6$ dimensions.

Abstract:We study four-dimensional = 2 superconformal circular, cyclic symmetric quiver theories which are planar equivalent to = 4 super Yang-Mills. We use localization to compute nonplanar corrections to the free energy and the circular half-BPS Wilson loop in these theories for an arbitrary number of nodes, and examine their behaviour in the limit of long quivers. Exploiting the relationship between the localization quiver matrix integrals and an integrable Bessel operator, we find a closed-form expression for the leading nonplanar correction to both observables in the limit when the number of nodes and 't Hooft coupling become large. We demonstrate that it has different asymptotic behaviour depending on how the two parameters are compared, and interpret this behaviour in terms of properties of a lattice model defined on the quiver diagram.

Some 1d (Supersymmetric) Quantum Field Theories Reduced from Chern-Simons Gauge Theories

Abstract:We study dimensional reduction by spherical symmetry in the context of Euclidean Chern-Simons gauge theories with gauge groups $SU(2)$ and $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ (de Sitter gravity). We start with pure Chern-Simons theories and show that the reduced theory obtained by employing a spherically symmetric ansatz on the gauge field is similar to a fermionic theory in 1d coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field with a 1-dimensional Chern-Simons kinetic term. Furthermore, we carry out a semiclassical computation that demonstrates that in the large $\kappa$ limit, the path integral of the 3d pure Chern-Simons theory is equivalent to the path integral of the dimensionally reduced theory, which is a 1d QFT. Moreover, we argue that the Wilson loop operators in the large $\kappa$ limit should reduce to some observables of the 1-dimensional theory. This agreement hints at the existence of a duality at the quantum level between the 3d Chern-Simons theory and the 1d reduced theory. We then study Chern-Simons Higgs theories in the Euclidean formalism. We again employ the spherically symmetric ansatzë on the fields, and show that at the clasical level, the action of the reduced theory is a theory with some scalar fields $\mathsf{X}_i$ coupled to fermionic fields $\Psi_i$. To get an appropriate reduced action, we define the original theory on a manifold $\mathcal{M}$ with the geometry of $\mathbb{R} \times S^2$. With a suitable choice of the potential of the Higgs field, we show that the reduced theory, which is the action that governs the spherically symmetric monopoles in the Chern-Simons Higgs theory, is equivalent to a supersymmetric quantum mechanical model. The flux of the Chern-Simons Higgs monopole is shown to be related to the fermionic number operator $F = \overline{\Psi} \Psi$, which in turn is related to the Witten index.

Abstract:Non-simply laced quivers, despite the lack of complete Lagrangian descriptions, play an important role in characterising moduli spaces of supersymmetric field theories. Notably, the moduli space of instantons in non-simply laced gauge groups can be understood by means of such quivers. We generalise the notion of non-simply laced unitary quivers to those whose edges carry two labels $(p,q)$, dubbed $(p,q)$-edged quivers. The special case of $(p,1)$ corresponds to a conventional non-simply laced edge studied in the literature. In the case of unframed $(p,q)$-edged quivers, we show how to parametrise the lattice of magnetic fluxes upon ungauging the decoupled $\mathrm{U}(1)$, and how one can pick sublattices thereof corresponding to different global forms of the quiver related by discrete gauging. This form of discrete gauging can be applied to any unframed unitary quivers, not just ones with generalised edges. We utilise both the Hilbert series and the superconformal index to study moduli spaces and 't Hooft anomalies. In particular, we study mixed 't Hooft anomalies between a one-form symmetry and a zero-form continuous topological symmetry in various $(p,q)$-edged quivers. We also provide an alternative realisation of the moduli space of $\mathfrak{so}(2n+1)$ instantons via gauging discrete symmetries in supersymmetric QCD with a symplectic gauge group and a large number of flavours.

Unravelling T-Duality: Magnetic Quivers in Rank-zero Little String Theories

Abstract:An intriguing class of 6d supersymmetric theories are known as little strings theories, which exhibit a rich network of T-dualities. A robust feature of these theories are their Higgs branches. Focusing on the little string theories that are realised on a single curve of zero self-intersection, we utilise brane systems to derive the magnetic quivers. Using a variety of techniques (including branching rules, brane dynamics, F-theory geometry, quiver subtraction, and the decay and fission algorithm), we detail the Higgs branch Hasse diagram and determine the transverse slices for every elementary Higgs branch RG-flow. Building on these insights, we pursue two directions: firstly, we used the established connection between the change of the 2-Group structure constants along Higgs branch RG-flows and the transition-type in the Hasse diagram to infer putative T-dual models. Secondly, we conjecture an algorithm that predicts the non-Abelian flavour symmetry of the compactified little string theory by inspecting the magnetic quivers of all T-dual frames.

Dimensional reduction gauge and effective dimensional reduction in the four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

Abstract:Motivated by one-dimensional color-electric flux-tube formation in four-dimensional (4D) QCD, we investigate a possibility of effective dimensional reduction in the 4D Yang-Mills (YM) theory. We propose a new gauge fixing of "dimensional reduction (DR) gauge" defined so as to minimize $R_{\mathrm{DR}}~\equiv~\int d^{4}s ~ \mathrm{Tr} \left[ A_{x}^{2}(s) + A_{y}^{2}(s) \right]$, which has a residual gauge symmetry for the gauge function $\Omega (t,z)$ like 2D QCD on the $t$-$z$ plane. We investigate effective dimensional reduction in the DR gauge using SU(3) quenched lattice QCD at $\beta = 6.0$. The amplitude of $A_{x}(s)$ and $A_{y}(s)$ are found to be strongly suppressed in the DR gauge. We consider "$tz$-projection" of $A_{x,y}(s) \to 0$ for the gauge configuration generated in the DR gauge, in a similar sense to Abelian projection in the maximally Abelian gauge. By the $tz$-projection in the DR gauge, the interquark potential is not changed, and $A_{t}(s)$ and $A_{z}(s)$ play a dominant role in quark confinement. In the DR gauge, we calculate a spatial correlation $\langle \mathrm{Tr} A_{\perp}(s) A_{\perp}(s+ra_{\perp}) \rangle ~ (\perp = x,y)$ and estimate the spatial mass of $A_{\perp}(s) ~ (\perp = x,y)$ as $M \simeq 1.7 ~ \mathrm{GeV}$. It is conjectured that this large mass makes $A_{\perp}(s)$ inactive and realizes the dominance of $A_{t}(s)$ and $A_{z}(s)$ in infrared region in the DR gauge. We also calculate the spatial correlation of two temporal link-variables and find that the correlation decreases as $\exp (-mr)$ with $m \simeq 0.6 ~ \mathrm{GeV}$. Using a crude approximation, the 4D YM theory is reduced into an ensemble of 2D YM systems with the coupling of $g_{\rm 2D} = g m$.

Linear Quivers at Large-$N$

Abstract:Quiver theories constitute an important class of supersymmetric gauge theories with well-defined holographic duals. Motivated by holographic duality, we use localisation on $S^d$ to study long linear quivers at large-N. The large-N solution shows a remarkable degree of universality across dimensions, including $d = 4$ where quivers are genuinely superconformal. In that case we upgrade the solution of long quivers to quivers of any length.

Abstract:If gravity is asymptotically safe, operators will exhibit anomalous scaling at the ultraviolet fixed point in a way that makes the theory effectively two-dimensional. A number of independent lines of evidence, based on different approaches to quantization, indicate a similar short-distance dimensional reduction. I will review the evidence for this behavior, emphasizing the physical question of what one means by `dimension' in a quantum spacetime, and will discuss possible mechanisms that could explain the universality of this phenomenon.

Abstract:In this paper, we show the equivalence between two seemingly distinct 2d TQFTs: one comes from the “Coulomb branch index” of the class 𝒮 theory T[Σ,G] on L(k,1) × S^1 , the other is the ^L G “equivariant Verlinde formula”, or equivalently partition function of ^L G_ℂ complex Chern–Simons theory on Σ× S^1 . We first derive this equivalence using the M-theory geometry and show that the gauge groups appearing on the two sides are naturally G and its Langlands dual ^L G . When G is not simply-connected, we provide a recipe of computing the index of T[Σ,G] as summation over the indices of T[Σ,G̃] with non-trivial background ’t Hooft fluxes, where G̃ is the universal cover of G . Then we check explicitly this relation between the Coulomb index and the equivariant Verlinde formula for G=SU(2) or SO (3). In the end, as an application of this newly found relation, we consider the more general case where G is SU ( N ) or PSU ( N ) and show that equivariant Verlinde algebra can be derived using field theory via (generalized) Argyres–Seiberg duality. We also attach a Mathematica notebook that can be used to compute the SU (3) equivariant Verlinde coefficients.

Abstract:We study a class of two-dimensional 𝒩=(0, 4) quiver gauge theories that flow to superconformal field theories. We find dualities for the superconformal field theories similar to the 4d 𝒩=2 theories of class 𝒮 , labelled by a Riemann surface 𝒞 . The dual descriptions arise from various pair-of-pants decompositions, that involve an analog of the T N theory. Especially, we find the superconformal indices of such theories can be written in terms of a topological field theory on 𝒞 . We interpret this class of SCFTs as the ones coming from compactifying 6d 𝒩=(2, 0) theory on ℂℙ^1×𝒞 . Moreover, some new dualities of (0 , 2) and (2 , 2) theories are also discussed.
The Spectral Action on quivers

Abstract:We consider quiver representations not on vector spaces, as traditional, but on a different target category, which emerges in the context of noncommutative geometry. The equivalence between quiver representations and path algebra modules -- established here for the new category -- inspired the following construction: Only from representation theory data, we build the Dirac operator (of a spectral triple) on a quiver and evaluate the spectral action functional from a general formula over closed paths derived here. We apply this construction to gauge theories on lattice-quivers and obtain all the exact Weisz-Wohlert-type cells in the context of Symanzik's improvement to the Wilsonian Yang-Mills lattice gauge theory. We show that a hermitian Higgs field emerges from the self-loops of the quiver and derive the Yang-Mills--Higgs theory on flat space as a limit of certain quivers. We worked in arbitrary dimension and, concerning paths on lattices, we proved some combinatorial claims, which might be useful elsewhere.

Abstract:This paper introduces two operations in quiver gauge theories. The first operation takes a quiver with a permutation symmetry $S_n$ and gives a quiver with adjoint loops. The corresponding 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Coulomb branches are related by an orbifold of $S_n$. The second operation takes a quiver with $n$ nodes connected by edges of multiplicity $k$ and replaces them by $n$ nodes of multiplicity $qk$. The corresponding Coulomb branch moduli spaces are related by an orbifold of type $\mathbb{Z}_q^{n-1}$. The first operation generalises known cases that appeared in the literature. These two operations can be combined to generate new relations between moduli spaces that are constructed using the magnetic construction.

Abstract:Quiver theories arising on D3-branes at orbifold and del Pezzo singularities are studied using mirror symmetry. We show that the quivers for the orbifold theories are given by the soliton spectrum of massive 2d N=2 theory with weighted projective spaces as target. For the theories obtained from the del Pezzo singularities we show that the geometry of the mirror manifold gives quiver theories related to each other by Picard-Lefschetz transformations, a subset of which are simple Seiberg duals. We also address how one indeed derives Seiberg duality on the matter content from such geometrical transitions and how one could go beyond and obtain certain "fractional Seiberg duals." Moreover, from the mirror geometry for the del Pezzos arise certain Diophantine equations which classify all quivers related by Picard-Lefschetz. Some of these Diophantine equations can also be obtained from the classifications results of Cecotti-Vafa for the 2d N=2 theories.

Abstract:We study the ${\mathcal{N}=2}$ four-dimensional superconformal index in various interesting limits, such that only states annihilated by more than one supercharge contribute. Extrapolating from the SU(2) generalized quivers, which have a Lagrangian description, we conjecture explicit formulae for all A-type quivers of class ${\mathcal S}$, which in general do not have one. We test our proposals against several expected dualities. The index can always be interpreted as a correlator in a two-dimensional topological theory, which we identify in each limit as a certain deformation of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. The structure constants of the topological algebra are diagonal in the basis of Macdonald polynomials of the holonomies.

Abstract:We study integrable models in the context of the recently discovered Gauge/YBE correspondence, where the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE) is promoted to a duality between two supersymmetric gauge theories. We study flavored elliptic genus of 2d N = (2, 2) quiver gauge theories, which are defined from statistical lattices regarded as quiver diagrams. Our R-matrices are written in terms of theta functions and simplify considerably when the gauge groups at the quiver nodes are Abelian. We also discuss the modularity properties of the R-matrix, reduction of 2d index to 1d Witten index, and string theory realizations of our theories.
Some Lower Dimensional Quantum Field Theories Reduced from Chern-Simons Gauge Theories

Abstract:We study symmetry reductions in the context of Euclidean Chern-Simons gauge theories to obtain lower dimensional field theories. Symmetry reduction in certain gauge theories is a common tool for obtaining explicit soliton solutions. Although pure Chern-Simons theories do not admit solitonic solutions, symmetry reduction still leads to interesting results. We establish relations at the semiclassical regime between pure Chern-Simons theories on $S^3$ and the reduced Quantum Field Theories, based on actions obtained by the symmetry reduction of the Chern-Simons action, spherical symmetry being the prominent one. We also discuss symmetry reductions of Chern-Simons theories on the disk, yielding $BF$-theory in two dimensions, which signals a curious relationship between symmetry reductions and the boundary conformal field theories. Finally, we study the Chern-Simons-Higgs instantons and show that under certain circumstances, the reduced action can formally be viewed as the action of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical model. We discuss the extent to which the reduced actions have a fermionic nature at the level of the partition function.

Six-Dimensional Gauge Theory on the Chiral Square

Abstract:We construct gauge theories in two extra dimensions compactified on the chiral square, which is a simple compactification that leads to chiral fermions in four dimensions. Stationarity of the action on the boundary specifies the boundary conditions for gauge fields. Any six-dimensional gauge field decomposed in Kaluza-Klein modes includes a tower of heavy spin-1 particles whose longitudinal polarizations are linear combinations of the extra-dimensional components, and a tower of heavy spin-0 particles corresponding to the orthogonal combinations. These linear combinations depend on the Kaluza-Klein numbers, and are independent of the gauge fixing. If the gauge symmetry is broken by the vacuum expectation value of a six-dimensional scalar, at each Kaluza-Klein level three spinless fields in the adjoint representation mix to provide the longitudinal polarization of the spin-1 mode, leaving the orthogonal states as two spin-0 particles. We derive the interactions of the Kaluza-Klein modes for generic gauge theories, laying the groundwork for the Standard Model in two universal extra dimensions, and more generally for future model building and phenomenological studies.
