Abstract:Emerging lead-based perovskite photovoltaics (PPVs) have attracted rigorous attention as their power-conversion efficiency reached record efficiencies through solution processing of abundant materials. Given that PPVs are also compatible with high volume manufacturing techniques (such as roll-to-roll production), they could be suitable for terawatt production, accelerating a green energy transition, if sustainably commercialized. However, the toxicity of lead causes concern about its use at large scales. In this article, life-cycle analysis (LCA) is used to provide insights into the human and eco-toxicity impact potential of lead-based perovskite solar cells, considering various, material, and process alternatives, with contribution analysis elucidating the most impactful contributors. It was found that silver and indium, not lead, are the major PPV toxicity potential impact contributors. However, a comparison of the "cradle-to-gate" PPV life-cycle impacts per square meter of panel, with those of commercial silicon and thin-film PV, shows that the former have lower potential toxicity impacts than the currently commercial PV.
