Abstract:Objective: A durable resin/zirconia bond is essential for successful intra-oral repair of zirconia restorations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of two mechanical treatments followed by seven chemical treatments on the shear bond strength (SBS) of composite resin to zirconia. Materials and methods: In this in vitro study, 280 zirconia blocks (Y-TZP) were either air-abraded or bur roughened and divided into seven experimental groups (n = 20) in terms of primer/resin application: 1) ZPP, Z-Prime Plus; 2) ZPP + GP, Z-Prime Plus followed by G-premio bond; 3) ZPP + ALB, Z-Prime Plus followed by All Bond Universal; 4) ZPP + CLRF, Z-Prime Plus followed by Clearfil SE Bond; 5)GP, G-Premio Bond 6) ALB, All Bond Universal; and 7) CLRF, Clearfil SE Bond. After composite bonding and storage in distilled water (24 hours), half of each group specimen (n = 10) were thermocycled. All specimens were subjected to shear force. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test (α = 0.05). Results: Significant reduction in SBS was observed in all groups after thermocycling(p < 0.05), except for the air-abraded ZPP + CLRF (p = 0.143). After aging, air-abraded CLRF exhibited the highest SBS (13.55 ± 7.8 MPa) and bur roughened ZPP showed the lowest SBS (1.16 ± 1.23 MPa). In the aged specimens, there was a significant difference between air abrasion and bur roughening in all groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Air-abrasion followed by application of adhesive (with/without prior primer application) is the most efficient technique for repair of veneered zirconia restorations with resin composite.
The effect of surface treatments of tooth on the shear bond strength of direct composite veneers: An in vitro scanning electron microscope study

Abstract:Background: The bond strength between tooth structure and restorative materials is critical for the long-term success of dental restorations. This study sought to determine how the shear bond strength (SBS) and type of bond breakdown were affected by the inclusion of sandblasting (SB) as a conditioning step before acid etching (AE). Materials and methods: A total of 40 extracted human molars were split into two groups at random: intervention (SB followed by AE) and control (AE only). Composite resin cylinders were constructed on the tooth surface following the application of the bonding agent. A universal testing device was used to determine the SBS, and scanning electron microscopy was used to assess the kind of bond failure. Results: In comparison to the control group, the intervention group displayed a significantly higher SBS (P < 0.05). In contrast to the control group, which showed more adhesive failure at the tooth-resin interface, the intervention group also demonstrated a larger percentage of cohesive failure within the composite resin. Conclusion: As an extra conditioning step, AE after SB considerably increased the SBS between tooth structure and composite resin. The fact that the intervention group experienced a higher percentage of cohesive failure shows that this technique could boost the bond's longevity.
Effect of Surface Treatments Applied to 3D Printed Permanent Resins on Shear Bond Strength

Abstract:Background: 3D-printed permanent resins have recently been introduced to produce permanent restorations. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of surface treatment methods on the shear-bond strength (SBS) between 3D-printed permanent resins and adhesive cement. Material and methods: In this study, samples were produced using digital light projection (DLP) and stereolithography (SLA) 3D printers with two permanent resins (Crowntec, Saremco and Permanent Crown, Formlabs) in accordance with manufacturer guidelines. The samples were separated into three groups: sandblasting, hydrofluoric acid and no surface treatment. The surface profile (Ra, Sa) of the samples was examined with a confocal microscope (Smartproof 5, Zeiss). Then, a self-adhesive resin cement was applied to the samples in a transparent mold (2.38 mm diameter) in accordance with ISO 29022:2013. A universal testing machine was used to perform SBS test. A stereomicroscope was used to analyze the different types of fractures. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was used to assess the data (p<0.05). Results: The samples with sandblasting applied to the surface showed higher surface roughness values than the samples with hydrofluoric acid (p<0.001). 3D printer technology and surface treatment methods affected SBS values (p<0.001). Sandblasting groups higher SBS values were than in the hydrofluoric acid group (p<0.001). Sandblasting revealed cohesion fractures, which indicated a stronger bond, while hydrofluoric acid displayed adhesive and mix fractures. Conclusions: When sandblasting was applied to the surface of the samples prepared using permanent resins, higher adhesion was achieved with adhesive cement. Repair strength of dimethacrylate-based composites resins: Effect of sandblasting, adhesive bonding, and thermocycling

Abstract:Background: The goal of this study is to determine the effect of different sandblasting particles and dental adhesive systems on the repair strength of dimethacrylate-based composite resins. Materials and methods: In this in-vitro study, 96 specimens of X-trafil composite blocks were prepared and divided into eight groups (n = 12). Four groups were sandblasted with Aluminum Oxide (AL) and four other groups with Bio-Active Glass particles (BAG). A two-component silane was applied on the surface of all the samples after phosphoric acid etching and rinsing. Two groups of the sandblasted specimens were treated with Clearfil SE Bond (CSB) and the other two groups were treated with Single Bond Universal (SBU) and new composite was bonded to the prepared surfaces. Half of the specimens in each group were thermocycled. Shear force was applied to the bonded composite using a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min and mean shear bond strength (MSBS) was calculated (MPa). The data was analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Man-Whitney U-tests with the significance level of 0.05. Results: Significant differences were observed between different groups (P < 0.001). The highest and the lowest MSBS of the thermocycled samples were reported 18.88 MPa with application of AL and SBU and 11.46 MPa with the application of AL and CSB, respectively. No significant difference was observed with application of BAG particles after thermocycling. Conclusion: Effect of AL on repair shear bond strength of composite resins is affected by bonding type. Bonding type did not affect repair shear bond strength of BAG. Thermocycling reduced bond strength in all groups.
Effects of different surface treatments on surface topography and bond strength in the repair of fiber‐reinforced dentin composite

Abstract:Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different surface treatments on the repair bond strength between a fiber‐reinforced dentin composite and a posterior composite. Methods Forty fiber‐reinforced dentin composite resin blocks (4 mm × 4 mm × 4 mm) were separated into eight groups (n = 5) according to the surface preparation methods: (G1) negative control group, (G2) adhesive application, (G3) 50% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) application, (G4) 50% DMSO + adhesive application, (G5) 37% phosphoric acid etch + adhesive application, (G6) air abrasion + adhesive application, (G7) 37% phosphoric acid etch + 50% DMSO application + adhesive application, and (G8) air abrasion +50% DMSO application + adhesive application group. The composite surfaces were repaired in two layers with a posterior composite. Composite sticks were subjected to a micro tensile bond strength (μTBS) test. Fractured surfaces were evaluated using a stereomicroscope (×25). Short fiber‐reinforced composite samples' surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Shapiro Wilk, one‐way ANOVA, and Tukey HSD tests were used for statistical evaluation. Results The highest average (μTBS) values were observed in G8, whereas the lowest mean μTBS values were evident in the G1 group. Statistically significant μTBS values were found in all adhesive‐applied groups when compared with the negative control group. Notably, the application of 50% DMSO without adhesive did not lead to a statistically significant increase in μTBS values. SEM images demonstrated that acid etching partially eliminated residues on the composite surface, while air abrasion had a detrimental effect on the integrity of fiber structures. Conclusion In the repair of fiber‐reinforced dentin composite with a posterior composite, adhesive application is an effective approach. The treatment of 50% DMSO without adhesive did not confer a statistically significant advantage, and the supplemental use of acid etch or air abrasion did not show an additional benefit compared to adhesive‐only repairs. Clinical Significance Adhesive application emerges as a potent and effective strategy for the repair of bur‐roughened fiber‐reinforced dentin composites. With its limitations, the study highlights the efficacy of adhesive‐only repairs without the necessity for additional surface treatments.

Effects of Er,Cr:YSGG Laser Surface Treatments and Composites with Different Viscosities on the Repair Bond Strength of CAD/CAM Resin Nanoceramic

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the repair micro-shear bond strength of the CAD/CAM resin nanoceramic block treated using four different surface treatments and composite resins of different viscosities. For the current study, 96 samples with dimensions of 14 × 12 × 2 mm were obtained from a CAD/CAM resin nanoceramic block (Cerasmart) with a low-speed precision cutting saw under water cooling. The relevant samples were randomly divided into four groups according to the surface treatment processes: grinding with diamond bur, aluminum oxide airborne-particle abrasion, long-pulse laser, and short-pulse laser. Following silane application, universal adhesive was applied to all surface-treated samples and cured with an LED for 10 s. The samples prepared for the repair procedure were divided into two subgroups (microhybrid composite and injectable composite) according to the viscosity of the repair material to be used (n = 12). After the repair procedure, care was taken to keep the samples in distilled water in an incubator at 37 °C for 24 h. The repair micro-shear bond strength values (μSBSs) of CAD/CAM resin nanoceramic-composite resin complexes were tested. In addition, randomly selected samples from each group were examined with a scanning electron microscope to evaluate the surface topography after both surface treatments and the micro-shear bond strength test. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test. It was determined that the surface treatment preferred in the repair protocol significantly affected the μSBS value (p < 0.001). While the highest μSBS value was obtained with the short-pulse laser airradiation group, the lowest μSBS values were found in samples with long pulse laser irradiation. However, samples grinded with a bur and airborne-particle abrasion showed similar μSBS values (p > 0.05). The preferred composite viscosity in the repair procedure has a significant effect on the μSBS value (p < 0.001). However, the interaction between the surface treatment and the viscosity of the repair composite does not affect the μSBS values in a statistically significant way (p = 0.193). It may be recommended to clinicians to repair CAD/CAM resin nanoceramic restoration surfaces with injectable composites or after treatment with short-pulse lasers.

This study aimed to assess and compare the effect of three types of lasers on the shear bond strength (SBS) of zirconia to resin cement.Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, 55 zirconia disks (6 mm diameter × 3 mm thickness) were randomly divided into five groups: control (1), sandblast (2), carbon dioxide (CO2) (3), erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er: YAG) (4), and neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd: YAG) (5) laser irradiation. The surface morphology of one specimen from each group was evaluated by a scanning electron microscope. Zirconia disks were cemented to composite using Panavia F2. SBS test was performed at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min after 24 h storage in distilled water and thermocycling. The data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's HSD tests (α = 0.05).Results: The mean SBS values of the groups such as sandblast, Er: YAG, Nd: YAG, and CO2 lasers and control were 6.64 MPa, 6.63 MPa, 4.98 MPa, 4.39 MPa, and 2.32 MPa, respectively. No significant difference was observed between sandblast and Er: YAG laser and between Nd: YAG and CO2 lasers.Conclusion: All lasers increased SBS values of zirconia to resin cement in comparison to the untreated surface. Er: YAG laser was the most effective laser treatment on the bond strength equal to that of sandblast.
Shear bond strength of a composite resin restoration in primary teeth following cavity preparation using laser- an in-vitro study

Abstract:To evaluate and compare the shear bond strength of composite resin restorations in primary teeth, following cavity preparation with both traditional dental burs and laser irradiation. One hundred primary molars extracted from the children visiting our department were collected and randomly divided into five groups (A-E) with 20 teeth in each group. In groups A, B, C, D, and E the teeth samples were etched with phosphoric acid, Er; YAG laser followed by acid etching, Er, Cr: YSGG laser followed by acid etching, Er; YAG laser etching only and Er, Cr: YSGG laser etching only, respectively. Following, all the samples were restored with composite resin and subjected to 500 cycles of thermocycling. The shear bond strength of the resin composite was analyzed. The type of fractures was also noted. Data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. The mean value of shear bond strength of Group A, B, C, D, and E was 17.562 ± 0.810, 15.928 ± 0.415, 14.964 ± 0.566, 11.833 ± 0.533 and 11.187 ± 0.517, respectively. Adhesive failure was most commonly seen in all the groups. The phosphoric acid etching remains a highly effective technique for pre-treating dentin in composite resin restorations. The shear strength of composite resin to the dentin of laser-prepared cavity in primary teeth can be improved by the addition of acid etching.
The Effect of Different Combinations of Surface Treatments and Bonding Agents on the Shear Bond Strength Between Titanium Alloy and Lithium Disilicate Glass-Ceramic

Abstract:In order to obtain a more-natural esthetic prothesis, the use of hybrid abutments is becoming widespread in implant dentistry. The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the effects of different surface treatments, as well as the effects of different combinations of surface treatments and cementation protocols, on the shear bond strength between titanium alloy disks and lithium disilicate glass-ceramics. Forty titanium-alloy disks (4 × 6.6 mm) were fabricated using computer-aided designed/computer-assisted manufacturing, and an identical number of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic disks of similar sizes were fabricated by a heat-pressing technique to be attached to the titanium disks. The specimens from each material group were divided into two groups (n = 20 each) according to the surface treatment type: alumina airborne-particle abrasion or etching with hydrofluoric acid. Each group was then divided into two subgroups (n = 10) depending on the resin-cement type: Multilink Hybrid Abutment Cement (Ivoclar Vivadent) or PANAVIA SA Cement Plus (Kuraray). After thermocycling (5,000 cycles), a shear bond strength (SBS) test was conducted using a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis was performed by analysis of one-way analysis of variance and unpaired tests (P < .05). Statistically, the highest SBS values were obtained using airborne-particle abrasion. The surface treatment of titanium alloys by sandblasting led to a higher SBS compared to etching with hydrofluoric acid. The cement type also had a significant influence on SBS results.
The effect of surface treatment and thermal aging on the bonding of clear aligner attachments to provisional resin-based material: shear bond strength analysis

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the shear bond strength (SBS) of clear aligner attachments bonded to Bis-acryl provisional crowns. Methods: 120 cylindrical bisacrylic composite material (ProTemp type) specimens were prepared and divided into six groups (n = 20) based on surface treatment, control: (no treatment); super coarse grit diamond bur, carbide bur, alumina-blasting, non-thermal plasma treatment, and Er:YAG laser treatment. The features of treated surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A flowable composite resin (Transbond XT; 3M Unitek) was bonded to the specimens forming the attachment. Half of specimens were subjected to thermal cycling (5,000 cycles). SBS was measured before and after thermal cycling. Each specimen was loaded at the attachment/resin interface at a speed of 0.5 mm/min until failure. The nature of the failure was analyzed using the composite remnants index (CRI). Two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD were used for data analysis α = 0.5. For CRI scores analysis, Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's multiple comparison were used as post-hoc test. Results: SEM analysis showed that all surface treatments altered surface properties and increase surface bonding area. The specimens treated with plasma, Er:YAG laser, and alumina-blasting had higher SBS values before and after thermal cycling. In comparison to control plasma, Er:YAG laser, and alumina-blasting showed a significant increase in SBS (P < 0.001) while carbide and diamond bur groups showed no significant differences (P > 0.05). Thermal cycling significantly decreased the SBS of control, carbide bur, diamond bur, and Er:YAG laser while no significant effect of alumina-blasting and plasma group. Er:YAG laser and plasma groups significantly exhibited more dominance for scores 2 and score 3 and the absence of score 0. Conclusion: Alumina-blasting, Er:YAG laser, or non-thermal plasma surface treatments increased the shear bond strength between clear aligner attachments and resin-based restorations.
A Comparison of Laser and Mechanical Surface Pretreatment Methods on Shear Bond Strength of Resin Composite to Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer

Abstract:Statement of the problem: Dentin margins have a higher microleakage than enamel in composite restorations due to weaker bond durability. Clinically, most margins are located apical to cementoenamel junction on the dentin or cementum. Different surface preparation methods may have dissimilar effects on the shear bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) to composite resin, regarding the layering technique employed in restoration of these cavities. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the shear bond strength of RMGI to composite resin using different mechanical surface preparation methods. Materials and method: In this in vitro study, 72 RMGI samples were prepared in six groups (n=12): control, acid etching, air abrasion with aluminum oxide (Al2O3), bur, Er: YAG laser, and Er, Cr: YSGG laser groups. Two samples from each group were randomly examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A bonding layer and composite resin were applied and cured. Then the samples were subjected to 5000-cycles thermocycling procedure. The shear bond strength was then evaluated using a universal testing machine. Finally, the failed surface of the samples was evaluated under a light microscope to examine the failure mode. For the statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA and Games-Howell post hoc test was used to compare quantitative variables and chi-squared test to investigate the relationship between the failure mode and the groups. The significant level was set at 0.05. Results: The results showed significant differences between the mean of the strength variable in the groups (p< .001). The acid-etch and air abrasion groups exhibited significantly the lowest and highest values, respectively. The chi-squared test results also showed a significant relationship between the failure mode in the study groups (p= .008). Conclusion: Acid etching before completing RMGI polymerization could adversely affect shear bond strength. The air abrasion and bur methods are among the best methods to increase the shear bond strength between composite resin and RMGI. Using Er, Cr: YSGG and Er: YAG lasers could increase the bond strength results.
Effect of surface treatments and bonding type on elemental composition and bond strength of dentin

Abstract:The objective of this study was to explore the effect of different surface treatments and bonding types on elemental composition and bond strength of dentin. Under water cooling, 1.5 mm of tooth structure containing just dentin was cut from 39 extracted human molars. Dentin surfaces were untreated (control) or treated by erbium: yttrium aluminum garnet or femtosecond laser ( n = 13, each). One sample from each group underwent scanning electron microscopy. Then, dentin surfaces were bonded by Clearfil SE Bond or Clearfil SE Protect ( n = 6, each). Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was performed both after surface treatment and bonding application. The dual-polymerized resin cement was applied to dentin surfaces with a special teflon mold (diameter:3 mm × height:3 mm). After polymerization of the resin cement, shear force was applied at the resin cement-dentin interface. Elemental composition value (weight%) of dentin after surface treatment was analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the difference value in pre and post-bonding elemental composition by two-way ANOVA. Paired t -tests were executed to compare the weight% values of each element before and after each bonding application. Bond strength was analyzed by two-way ANOVA. The post-hoc test was Tukey's honest significant difference test. Both laser treatments increased the mineral content of dentin, compared to the controls ( P <0.05). Application of bonding agents decreased the mineral content of dentin compared to the surface treated dentin. Bond strength was unaffected by either surface treatment or bonding type ( P >0.05). For resin cementation, either surface treatment is suitable. After laser treatment, Clearfil SE Bond is recommended over Clearfil SE Protect.

Materials and methods: Ninety aluminum oxide ceramic (Turkom-Ceramic Sdn. Bhd., Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) specimens were produced and divided into nine groups to receive the following surface treatments: control group, no treatment (Group C), sandblasting (Group B), silica coating (Group S), erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser irradiation at 150 mJ 10 Hz (Group L1), Er:YAG laser irradiation at 300 mJ 10 Hz (Group L2), sandblasting + L1 (Group BL1), sandblasting + L2 (Group BL2), silica coating + L1 (Group SL1), and silica coating + L2 (Group SL2). After surface treatments, surface roughness (SR) values were measured and surface topography was evaluated. Resin cement was applied on the specimen surface, and shear bond strength (SBS) tests were performed. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparisons at a significance level of P < 0.05. Results: Group S, SL1, and SL2 showed significantly increased SR values compared to the control group (P < 0.05); therefore, no significant differences were found among the SR values of Groups B, BL1, BL2, L1, and L2 and the control group (P > 0.05). Group S showed the highest SBS values, whereas the control group showed the lowest SBS values. Conclusion: Silica coating is the most effective method for resin bonding of high strength ceramic, but Er:YAG laser application decreased the effectiveness.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study whether the bond strength between enamel and composite resin could be enhanced by intraoral sand abrasive.METHODS:Ten human maxillary first incisior teeth were divided into 2 groups The experimental group was sandblasted with 30 microm Al2O3 (CoJet-Sand, pressure 300 kPa) from a distance of 5 mm for 5 seconds, and the control group were not sandblasted. The Herculite composite resin composite cylinders were bonded with Coltene system. Bonded specimens were stored in 37 degrees C distilled water for 24 h, then were subjected to shear force in a testing machine. Stress at failure was calculated in Mpa, and mode of failure was recorded. The Student t test was applied to the data.RESULTS:The shear bond strength of experimental groups was (33.0+/-1.8) MPa, and that of control groups was (26.7+/-5.2) MPa,there was significant difference between these two groups. All the adhesive failures happened at the enamel composite resin interface, except that cohesive failure happened in one sandblasted specimen.CONCLUSION:Intraoral sandblasting could significantly enhance the shear bond strength between enamel and composite resin.

Abstract:PurposeBond strength which is as high as that of acid etching under in vitro conditions was provided by the laser which can be used more simply with a shorter clinical time than the acid etching. The aim of this study was to compare different orthodontic adhesives with the efficacy of Er: YAG laser for enamel conditioning. The effects of these adhesives’ types (single component orthodontic adhesives and glass carbomer cement) with lasers have not been studied previously.MethodsA total of 80 specimens were etched by irradiation of Er: YAG laser with 1.2-W power at 10 Hz and divided randomly into four groups (n = 20): group 1, bonding with Transbond XT primer with Transbond XT composite; group 2, Biofix; group 3, GC ortho connect; group 4; glass carbomer cement. Metal brackets were then bonded with adhesives. Shear bond strength tests were conducted on them in a universal testing machine after 24 h of water storage. A stereomicroscope was used to calculate the adhesive remnant index (ARI).ResultsThe statistical analysis of the data was done. The mean and standard deviation of shear bond strength were 11.67 ± 3.22, 9.78 ± 3.68, 7.85 ± 1.90, and 5.06 ± 1.72 MPa in groups 1 to 4, respectively. According to the ARI scores, there was a main mixture of the bond failure modes in all groups.ConclusionsThe optimal shear bond strength was yielded by Er: YAG lasers with the mentioned parameters, which may be used as another option for acid etching of the bracket bond to composite with single-component adhesive systems.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:In this study we observed the effect of air abrasion on enamel-composite resin adhesive strength in vitro.METHODS:Thirty teeth were prepared and divided into three groups. One group was air abraded and was acid-etched, another one was air abraded, and the other one was acid-etched. Next the bond and resin were used. Then we observed and compared the shear bond strength. The data were analysed by Chi square(chi(2)) test.RESULTS:Enamel-composite resin adhesive strength were not affected by acid etching and air abrading, but can be affected by air abrading alone.CONCLUSION:In clinic the traditional acidetch technique that used in composite resin restoration can be replaced with air abrasion surface preparation technique.

Abstract:Objectives: Porcelain chipping and delamination are among the shortcomings of all-ceramic restorations. This study aimed to assess the effect of laser irradiation and sandblasting on shear bond strength (SBS) of zirconia to veneering porcelain. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro, experimental study, 60 zirconia blocks were randomly divided into three groups (n=20) for surface treatment with Er:YAG laser, sandblasting, and no surface treatment (control). Each group was randomly divided into two subgroups (n=10) for porcelain application by the layering or the pressing technique. The surface roughness, SBS, and failure mode were determined and analyzed using two-way ANOVA, Tukey's HSD test, Chi-square test, and Pearson's correlation test (alpha=0.05). Results: The mean SBS was 8.16±3.66 MPa, 9.32±2.7 MPa, and 11.85±3.06 MPa in the control, laser, and sandblasting groups, respectively. The SBS was significantly different among the three groups (P=0.002). The failure mode of the three groups was not significantly different (P>0.05). The sandblasted group showed significantly higher surface roughness than the control and laser groups (P<0.001). Conclusion: Sandblasting yielded higher SBS particularly when the porcelain was applied by the layering technique. Although laser irradiation increased the SBS, the difference with the control group was not statistically significant.
Repair of Bulk-Fill and Nanohybrid Resin Composites: Effect of Surface Conditioning, Adhesive Promoters, and Long-Term Aging

Abstract:The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of different repair procedures on the repair bond strength of bulk-fill and nanohybrid resin composites after different aging periods. The resin composite blocks (8 × 8 × 4 mm3) were prepared from a bulk-fill (reliaFIL Bulk) and a nanohybrid (reliaFIL LC) resin composite and grouped according to aging duration (6 months, 1 year, and 2 years). Following aging, the blocks were assigned to different surface treatments; air-abrasion with aluminum oxide powder, roughening with a diamond bur, and no treatment. After cleansing with phosphoric acid, a silane layer (Porcelain Primer) was applied on the surface of half of the specimens in each group. The specimens were subdivided into two groups (n = 5): Scotchbond Universal (3M Oral Care) and All-Bond Universal (Bisco). The blocks were repaired with the nanohybrid composite (8 × 8 × 8 mm 3). The repaired specimens were stored in distilled water (37 °C/24 h) and segmented into beams. Half of the beams were immediately subjected to microtensile μTBS testing (1 mm/min), while the other half was stored in distilled water (37 °C) for 6 months before testing. Failure modes were analyzed using stereomicroscope and SEM. Statistical analyses were performed with ANOVA and least significant difference tests (LSD) tests (p = 0.05). The extension of aging periods (6 months, 1 year, and 2 years) reduced the repair bond strength in some groups for both resin composites (p < 0.05). The air-abrasion and bur roughening improved the repair bond strength (p < 0.05). The silane application did not influence the repair bond strength and durability (p > 0.05). There was no difference among the universal adhesives in the same surface treatment groups (p > 0.05). The mechanical roughening treatments are necessary for the repair of resin composite. The universal adhesives might be used for the repair of resin composites regardless of silane content without prior silane application.
Effect of silver diamine fluoride and ammonium hexafluorosilicate applications with and without Er:YAG laser irradiation on the microtensile bond strength in sound and caries-affected dentin

Abstract:Background and objective: Cariostatic and preventive agents are applied to create caries-resistant dentin surfaces and may affect subsequent resin bonding. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different agents with and without Er:YAG laser irradiation on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of resin composite to sound dentin (SD) and caries-affected dentin (CAD), and to assess the morphological and chemical changes in the specimens. Materials and methods: Ninety-six extracted molar teeth were divided into a control group (deionized water) and two experimental groups (ammonium hexafluorosilicate [SiF], silver diamine fluoride [SDF]), that subdivided according to different conditions (SD, CAD, SD+laser irradiation, CAD+laser irradiation). After treatment procedures, the teeth were restored and the µTBS was tested with a universal testing machine. Morover, 144 teeth were prepared and after treatment modalities; morphological changes of the surface were investigated and elemental analyses were performed using scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: SDF and SiF applications reduced the µTBS values in both the SD and CAD subgroups (P < 0.05). Laser irradiation increased the µTBS values in the SiF group and the values were adversely affected in the SDF group (P < 0.05). Fluoride content of the specimens increased in all of the treatment groups, compared with the control group. Silver content was detected only in the SDF group, and silicon was detected only in the SiF group. Conclusions: The µTBS values of resin composite, surface morphology and chemical characteristics of dentin were affected by the material type, dentin condition and laser irradiation and the use of SiF and SDF solutions under the resin restorations do not seem appropriate.

Abstract:Objectives: To report on the different approaches taken to improve the bonding of orthodontic brackets to porcelain surfaces and review the literature and test the available alternatives of hydrofluoric acid use. Materials and Methods: The search engine PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and Science Direct were used for this study to obtain relevant information. The sample comprises 18 Porcelain fused to metal crowns, etchant acids like Hydrofluoric Acid 9.6%; Orthophosphoric Acid 37%; Maleic Acid 10, 20, 30%. Acrylic tooth holder, high-speed hand piece, round bur, bonding agent, composite, brackets, bracket holder, light cure, and Universal Testing Machine were all used to conduct the study at Ajman University Prosthodontic Laboratory. Results: The highest shear bond strength value was observed for sandblasting without any acid etching. Maleic Acid 30% were found to have the highest shear strength amongst all other acids after 1-minute etching, while Maleic Acid 20% showed the highest value after etching for 2-minutes. Orthophosphoric Acid 37% showed the highest shear strength compared to the other acids after 3-minutes etching. Conclusions: Two essential factors to be considered when bonding in orthodontics is the concentration of acid being used and the amount of time subjected to the surface. Sandblasting alone without using any acid etching has the highest value, and it hails to be one of the most effective ways of increasing bond strength. Furthermore, compared with all the acids we have used, Maleic acid of 30% has shown the highest shear strength after 1-minute of etching.
