Abstract:<p>Amid the globalization of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the English translation of related texts is in full swing.</p><p>Several representative international organizations in fields regarding standardization and healthcare, one after another, have published a series of international standards for TCM nomenclature. With these efforts, the internationalization of TCM has been dramatically advanced.</p><p>When selecting parallel texts for reference, translators need to be aware of key factors influencing the English translation of TCM terms in international standards, including the distinctive characteristics of this discipline and relevant influences of international standard makers.</p><p>In this way, proper standards and reasonable English expression can be chosen for specific terms, thus stimulating the effective use of TCM nomenclature with consensus.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?

The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: the key factors influencing the English translation of TCM terms in the international standardization process of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). With the globalization of TCM, the English translation of relevant texts has become extremely important. However, in different international standards, there are differences in the English translations of the same TCM term, which poses a challenge to the internationalization of TCM. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the reasons behind these differences and provide guidance for selecting appropriate translation standards and reasonable English expressions.

1. **The influence of disciplinary characteristics on the translation of core terms**:
- **Polysemy leads to ambiguous connotations and denotations**: Due to long - term inheritance and the understanding of different physicians, the meanings of some core terms have changed, resulting in difficulties in determining accurate connotations and denotations during translation.
- **Selecting different equivalent words to expound medical logic**: The same Chinese term may convey different medical logics in different TCM schools, so translation adjustments need to be made according to specific situations.

2. **The influence of international standard - setters**:
- **Differences in translation principles of different international organizations**: For example, organizations such as ISO, WHO, and WFCMS have adopted different translation principles when formulating TCM standards due to differences in their missions, publication purposes, and target readers.
- **Translation method preferences of standard drafters**: Translators tend to use two translation methods, "foreignization" and "domestication", which also affect the consistency of term translation.
