Abstract:The Lightweight High Entropy Alloys (LW-HEAs) are considered as next-generation materials capable of overcoming the strength to weight ratio limitations of present conventional solutions. Herein, the major challenges in development of LW-HEAs are analyzed and the new alloy classification is proposed, which allows better comparison to conventional grades in order to identify their industrial application markets. As tools of LW-HEAs design the empirical rules and simulation methods including their shortcomings are comprehensively revisited. Synthesis routes of alloys such as casting, mechanical alloying, and additive manufacturing are discussed along with their applicability limitations to specific chemical compositions that involve elements with high reactivity to oxygen or extreme vapor pressure differences. While assessing the experimental compositions reported in the literature, particular attention is paid to the volume of alloy synthesized that impose testing barriers and represent the future scalability concerns. The mechanical, corrosion, and high-temperature oxidation properties are reviewed along with their relation to microstructural details, emphasizing scarce testing of complex mechanical properties, including downside of frequent relying on predicting the properties based on hardness tests alone. As summary, research lapses are pointed out and the follow-up directions of future development perspectives are outlined to overcome the present challenges, in particular to reduce the density and improve ductility of novel LW-HEAs.
