Abstract:Ian McEwan’s The Children Act focuses on a real-life conflict between religion and children’s rights in a pluralist society. By drawing on Charles Taylor’s work on religion in the “secular age”, I argue that McEwan’s narrative is ultimately built on secularist assumptions that devalue religious experience. McEwan’s approach aims to build a bridge between literary imagination and scientific rationality: religion is, from this perspective, reducible to a “fable” and an authority structure incongruous with legal rationality and the quest for meaning in the modern-secular society. In The Children Act, art substitutes religion and its aspiration to transcendence: music in particular is a universal idiom that can overcome barriers of communication and provides “ecstatic” experiences in a godless world.

Abstract:Ian McEwan's critically acclaimed novel Atonement has attracted a number of different interpretations across many themes. However, there has been little attention paid to the issue of class in this work. I seek to rectify this lacuna by offering an examination of the novel utilizing the understanding of class developed by E. P. Thompson. Thompson understands class as a historical relationship that is developed over time and is associated with core concepts such as class experience, class consciousness, class struggle, class hegemony, and fetishism. I use these categories to examine the main characters such as Robbie, Cecilia, and Paul Marshall to illuminate and enhance our understanding of the class contradictions present in the novel. This not only demonstrates the richness of Thompson's framework but also the quality of McEwan's own writing on what he sees as the important issue of class.

Abstract:Music in Dickens's final and unfinished novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, shares in the lethargy affecting traditional English community. That life has become stagnant in Cloisterham, the ancient city in which the novel is set, is nowhere more evident than in the desultory choral worship offered in its cathedral. Yet the unevenness of Dickens's writing in Edwin Drood does not make for consistency, and discrepancies in plotting extend to the musical occupations of its protagonists. By considering Edwin Drood alongside the shifting fortunes of choral music in Victorian Britain, this article focuses on what such discrepancies reveal about Dickens's notion of the place of religion in social renewal. Habitual forms of life in Cloisterham, such as the choral service of its cathedral, are being overwhelmed by marginal presences, arriving from the imperial East, but they may also give voice to a future revival. Something of the changeability in Dickens's feeling for established religion can be glimpsed in this duality.

Abstract:As a rejoinder to Roman Ingarden's phenomenological ways of worldmaking, Nelson Goodman's constructive ways of worldmaking, Roger C. Schank and Robert P. Abelson's cognitive psychological ways of worldmaking, Birgit Neumann and Martin Zierold's media ways of worldmaking, and Ansgar Nunning and David Herman's narrative ways of world-making, this article, inspired by Nie Zhenzhao's ethical literary criticism, proposes ethical ways of worldmaking. It argues that ethics is not only a way of understanding the world but also a means of building up the world. In a storyworld created by narrative fictions, characters are endowed with certain ethical identities and ethical consciousness. To maintain the stability of the world, all characters need to abide by certain ethical orders, and placed within a particular ethical environment, characters make ethical choices proper accordingly. The paper attempts to draw on Ian McEwan's novel Atonement to illuminate this argument. In Atonement, Briony, for the sake of getting things ethically appropriate, takes her responsibility of writing, rewriting and disrupting the world, while readers recreate and delve into the world of ethical conflicts, in the process of which they come to terms with Briony both as the author of her novel Atonement and as the character in McEwan's Atonement. The work goes beyond the boundary of modernism and postmodernism by penetrating into the deep moral concerns of literature. It is at the point of ethics that both the author and readers come together in making and remaking the worlds. If we examine the ways of worldmaking of McEwan by wearing ethical lenses, we can fruitfully reveal and unpack the ethical elements of his work, and thus reap much ethical knowledge, which is perhaps one of the reasons why we shall resettle him from "Ian Macabre" to "Ethical McEwan".
Cultural Conflict in Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach through Semiotics

Abstract:Contemporary British writer Ian McEwan explored various themes as he progressed from his early fiction to his later work, focusing more on personal relationships in the later years and how such relationships were affected by cultural and other issues of the time. He also shows how the macrocosm, which is society, affects the microcosm (human relationships) directly or indirectly. His meticulous writing style is obvious in all of his works. McEwan’s careful choice of words and use of similes, metaphors and symbols creates diverse moods and touches the very emotional and psychological core of the reader. On Chesil Beach is an excellent example of his craft, as he presents the reader with conflicts at various levels. The protagonists, Edward and Florence, suffer the burden of belonging to different social classes; challenged by the constraints of Victorian-era sexual boundaries while facing the consequences of a lack of proper communication and miscommunication. Edward and Florence, like most of the major characters of McEwan’s later novels, are victims of their time and this paper strives to understand, and interpret the signs by using semiotics as a tool to unravel the meaning behind the words.

Abstract:Abstract Music is frequently overlooked by scholars of adaptation, who concentrate primarily on questions of literary and visual transformation. Undertaking a close reading of a pivotal scene in Joe Wright’s Atonement , this article demonstrates the vital contribution music can make to the adaptation process. Wright uses music, and Puccini’s in particular, in ways that are both narrative and reflexive, creating shifts of emphasis, deliberate ambiguities and intertextual allusions. Opera becomes a tool that allows the film-maker to interrogate notions of authorial and historical reliability, themes that lie at the heart of Ian McEwan’s highly self-aware novel.

Abstract:The structural and value developments resulting from the cultural revolution in contemporary societies, parallel to the growth, have sought attention to the category of memory. Cultural memory has become an important tool in producing discourses and representations, as well as forming the cultural identity of social groups and communication with many institutions and social structures. The present article seeks to describe the contexts, functions, and effects of memory studies as an interdisciplinary academic tradition and introduce its main approaches and methods, especially in the tradition of cultural studies. For this purpose, the approach of neuro-aesthetics was utilized, and the Atonement Novel was reviewed, which in addition to adding important agendas in the study of everyday life and popular culture, also has a great contribution to the connection of humanities and social sciences and a better understanding of cultural and social complexities. Given the results, the major probable addition for the humanities from discussions with neuroscience is a pulling together of consideration on a few center inquiries of normal interest.

Abstract:From the perspective of the conceptual system of ethical literary criticism and specific key concepts such as brain text and electronic text, this paper attempts to examine the conflicts between the mechanical and the human in Ian McEwan's novel Machines Like Me (2019) in order to explore issues such as natural selection, ethical selection, ethical consciousness, and artificial intelligence. Taking these thematic concerns as reference points, this paper argues that a human being is a product of natural selection and ethical selection, while a machine is a product of scientific selection. In the novel, the conflicts between the three main characters, Charlie Friend, Miranda, and Adam, largely correspond with the conflicts between ethical selection and scientific selection. On the other hand, the conflict revolving around Adam tackles ethical concerns from a non-human perspective. As a machine, Adam has no biological brain text but only an electronic text used for storing and processing information. He thus has no ethical consciousness to tell good from evil. Arguably, then, the paper contends that artificial intelligence is merely a type of electronic text and as such, cannot replace the text of the human brain, which accounts for Adam's failure to deal with ethical issues in the human world.

Abstract:Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach is the story of conflicts at various levels. In this novella, the author shows how different factors, particularly cultural norms and sexual conflicts can affect people's lives and lead them down a certain path. Using a hermeneutic approach, this paper discusses the influential socio-economic, political, and cultural factors that had great impact on people's lives. McEwan illustrates how circumstances and settings influence people’s livelihoods and how the socio-economic status of the characters plays an important role in determining their future conditions. This essay shows the influence of culture, including the social climate of the time, on the society's attitudes towards sexuality, class differences, legislation, contraceptives, abortion and—most of all—on the personal lives of the characters in On Chesil Beach.

Abstract:The amount of criticism which overshadows Freudian concepts has never reduced the relevance it carries in the assessment of human inscape. It successfully explains the reasons behind the complexities of human behaviour. Ian McEwan, who is known for his vivid, picturesque, and striking narrative style, is a prodigy in exploring the human psyche. His prestigious work Atonement remarkably stands out in its portrayal of the interior realms and unpredictable workings of the socially conscious. This paper attempts a detailed study of the behavioural patterns of the characters and the role of the unconscious in controlling them. This study concludes that, though humans are the victims of the unconscious trauma, a positive sublimation can unquestionably save individuals and make them fit for society.

Abstract:Ian’s McEwan’s 2001 novel Atonement ends with a question: “how can a novelist achieve atonement when, with her absolute power of deciding outcomes, she is also God?” (350). And it concludes, in response to this question, that there “There is ... No atonement for God, or novelists, even if they are atheists” (350–51). I consider in the first part of this article what leads Briony Tallis, the novel’s fictive author, to this bleak conclusion. In the second part I consider how McEwan takes up the question again in his 2012 novel Sweet Tooth and how he arrives at a more hopeful answer.

Abstract:For a generation of well-established postmodernist writers in Britain, the exploration of narrative as the containment and control of temporal experience is of central importance. What makes Ian McEwan's writing especially worthy of attention is the way in which his experimentation with time and narrative is interlinked with the rethinking of gender identity. The early stories First Love, Last Rites (1975) and In Between the Sheets (1979) contained troubled and claustrophobic examinations of emergent masculinity. However, his novels from the 1980s onward contain an increasingly confident investment in gender as the cetral problematic through which the agency of the male writer can be reimagined in relation to both time and social space.

Abstract:This article focuses on the return and revitalisation of traditional Christian themes, such as sacrifice, guilt, sin and redemption, and the manifestation of supernatural phenomena, such as visions, faith healing and stigmata in three selected contemporary postmodern novels (Atonement by Ian McEwan, Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult and Mariëtte in Ecstasy by Ron Hansen). It offers an examination of how these themes materialise in novels written by certain writers who are not explicitly religious, or in novels which do not have an overtly religious focus. There is a co- existence of belief and unbelief, or religion and science in all the novels under discussion. The theories of Jean François Lyotard and specifically his notion of “incredulity towards metanarratives” as well as his notion that narrative and scientific knowledge are both subject to legitimisation are relevant to this article. Gianteresio Vattimo's ideas on the role of religion in contemporary life and the possible convergences of postmodernity and the Christian faith also come into play. He advocates weak thought as opposed to strong thought and sees caritas as essential in a postmodern society. Readers find themselves either on the side of the believing or unbelieving camp in the novels discussed. However, many readers may hover in the liminal space between belief and unbelief. Interpretation depends on many factors that constitute the world view of the readers.

Abstract:Shortlisted for the 2007 Booker Prize, Ian McEwan’s On Chesil Beach has received considerable academic attention, although to date there are few critical essays that address the novel. In particular, the author’s concern with people’s failure to love each other, miscommunication, and the problem of hospitality to strangers has not received the attention it deserves. In this novel, McEwan examines why two lovers fail to love each other, and, by extension, why people fail to do justice to strangers. In presenting a disastrous wedding night in 1962, he exposes love as a construction on both sides and points out the causes of its failure as well as impediments to mutual understanding. Via the implied narrator who delves into the pasts and minds of the central characters, McEwan indicates the importance of keeping love alive and how to better understand each other. He also makes the lovers’ problem resonate with people’s relationships to strangers, and shows that, in order to respect their own lives and those of others—to achieve a form of coexistence beneficial to all—people should go beyond their obsession with identity and instead care for and try to understand others.

Abstract:My paper starts from the assumption that empathy and imagination are closely connected, and that this connection offers rich ground for the exploration of moral values. However, as I aim at demonstrating, neither empathy nor imagination are presented as givens, but rather as means for rendering the infinite ethical complexity, guilt, ambiguity, contingency, and moral dilemmas faced by the characters’ of Ian McEwan’s 2001 masterpiece, Atonement. The paper calls attention to the novel’s concern with the risks posed by inhabiting a fictional universe, with the amendments that universe grants to both readers and writers, and with the limitations it imposes on them. The novel’s writer-protagonist possesses the power of inflicting trauma upon herself and other people as well as that of creating unity out of a chaotic and potentially destructive world through moral empathy and responsibility. My paper considers the novel’s exploration of dramatic events that distort and reshape the characters’ existence as a result of misinterpretation, misunderstanding, and misreading, with a view to highlighting the moral implications of telling stories and the power that a writer has to bend history to her own will.

Abstract:This article, from the perspective of ethical literary criticism conceptualized by Nie Zhenzhao, attempts to examine ethical dilemmas, ethical identities, and ethical choices of Ian McEwan's recent novel Nutshell. It argues that almost all major characters of the novel are imprisoned either by their existing ethical identities or by their misplaced ethical identities, which restrains them from making proper ethical choices and thus leads to their ethical tragedies. In particular, it tries to decode three ethical metaphors implied by the novel's title nutshell, namely nutshell of desire, nutshell of poetry, and nutshell of womb.

Abstract:Paul Virilio is the theorist of speed or “dromology”. In his terminology acceleration is relevant to time and space. Virtualization is also another seminal concept in his theory which is of course essentially related to his conception of time-space. In this essay, we argue that human perception as pertaining to speed-space and light-space as well as the different versions of reality arising out of different ways of body positioning is one of the major themes of Ian McEwan’s Atonement (2001). In McEwan’s novel both architecture and art mislead Briony. Paradoxically, however, Briony also attempts to overcome her trauma through the art of writing in which several versions of reality emerge out of shattered images of the past. Abstract:Narratives of survivors or by survivors offer useful and compelling insights into the experiences of abuse and its consequent effect on health. Reading such narratives can help a physician or clinician to understand the complexities of abuse. Furthermore, the critical study of narratives can open multiple therapeutic options for survivors of abuse to cater both their mental health and medical problems. In this article, we deal with the genre of childhood sexual abuse survivor’s narrative and its clinical application adding to the discourse of medical humanities and then critically examine one such narrative ( On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan) in particular and explore the therapeutics of music in abused victim’s clinical care.

Abstract:Typical of McEwan's "shock of literature," The Cement Garden not only generates a sense of shock and uneasiness for the reader but also foregrounds a number of ethical issues for us to ponder. Adopting a perspective of ethical literary criticism and its attendant conceptual framework as formulated by Nie Zhenzhao, this paper examines the problems that the fictional figures Jack, Julie, Tom, and Sue encounter. In particular, it argues that owing to the untimely death of their parents, Jack and his siblings have lost their moral models to follow, which makes it difficult to acquire ethical consciousness and formulate ethical norms. In the meantime, the animal factor in Jack and his siblings frequently takes control over the human factors, and they are thus prevented from maintaining ethical consciousness and behaviors based on reason. Taking on inappropriate identities and driven by incestuous desire, Jack and his siblings eventually create an ethical chaos within the fictional world. Viewed in this light, the novel not only reveals the puzzles and difficulties of children's self-development but also suggests that, after their biological selection, human beings must carry out an ethical selection as well.
