Abstract:In this paper, two types of aviation energy systems based on high-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and low-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) for electric aircraft are proposed. By establishing the system power generation performance model, it is shown that the electrical efficiency of SOFC energy system is higher than that of the PEMFC energy system. To fully consider the impact of system weight, the performance of aircraft powered by fuel cell energy systems is studied, and compared with the aircraft powered by turboelectric and Li-ion battery energy systems in terms of fuel consumption, CO 2 emissions and range. The results show that the Li-ion battery energy system and PEMFC energy system have relatively short ranges, but achieve zero carbon emissions. The turboelectric energy system has the maximum range and the highest CO 2 emissions. The SOFC energy system has a 52.50% reduction in CO 2 emissions compared to the former, and it can achieve long range with outstanding efficiency. Specifically, it is found that the smaller the ratio of power demand to maximum fuel capacity, the more advantageous the range of the SOFC energy system, and when the ratio is below 0.5546, the SOFC energy system has a longer range than the turboelectric system. In addition, the range enhancement potential of aircraft powered by fuel cell energy systems is explored as the weight of fuel cells decreased by 10%–50%.
