Abstract:The low hysteresis, good long-term stability, and competitive power conversion efficiency make inverted p-i-n perovskite solar cells (PSCs) a promising architecture for future industrial applications. An essential aspect of achieving high-performance inverted PSCs is the selection and optimization of hole transport layers (HTLs), which are responsible for hole extraction and growth of perovskite films. In this investigation, we utilized a facile hydrothermal method to synthesize LaNiO3 nanocrystals. The resulting LaNiO3 nanocrystal dispersion was employed to fabricate LaNiO3 films as HTLs for the MAPbI(3) PSCs. One noteworthy advantage of this approach is the reduced lattice mismatch between LaNiO3 and MAPbI(3), which enhances the quality of the LaNiO3/MAPbI(3) interface and minimizes microstrain within MAPbI(3). Consequently, MAPbI(3) PSCs with LaNiO3 HTLs achieved a remarkable champion efficiency of 19.14%, a low hysteresis index of 0.2%, and an improved stability in air. This study demonstrates that the LaNiO3 layer is a promising HTL for inverted PSCs.

Abstract:Organic/inorganic hybrid perovskites have received a great deal of attention in solar energy harvest due to their high absorbance in the visible range, long carrier diffusion length, and solution processability. It is extremely important to develop high-quality hole transport layer (HTL) to replace PEDOT:PSS for fabricating inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and device stability. Upon this consideration, we proposed potassium (K)-doped nickel oxide (NiO x ) compact layer via the sol–gel process to improve the conductivity and to modify its work function. Inverted PSCs with the configuration of FTO/K:NiO x /Cs0.05FA0.81MA0.14Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3/TBABF4+PCBM/TIPD/Ag were fabricated and evaluated. We found that the device based on 3% K-doped NiO x showed the best performance with an optimized PCE of 17.05% and a high fill factor of 74%, and it retained about 80% of initial PCE value after 35 days storage. Our results provide a simple and effective approach to fabricate inverted PSCs with high efficiency and long-term stability for future production.

Abstract:An efficient hole transport layer (HTL) with desirable charge separation and hole extraction efficiency is crucial for inverted perovskite solar cells. However, the interfacial trap recombination loss and mismatched band alignment limit the actual performance of device, especially the open-circuit voltage (VOC). To address this issue, a unique NiOx/carbon heterostructure is designed as efficient anode interlayer for optimizing the interfacial charge transport dynamics between HTL and perovskite. Such a buffer interlayer can significantly contribute to the improved hole conductivity and hole extraction efficiency at HTL/perovskite interface. Moreover, the more favorable gradient energy level alignment can be formed to increase the interfacial electric field, inhibit the nonradiative recombination, and minimize the VOC loss. Therefore, the champion device achieves 19.51% efficiency with high VOC of 1.13 V, close to the highest power conversion efficiencies of MAPbI3 device. This work suggests that interface design can be an alternative approach to fabricate efficient inverted NiO-based devices.

Abstract:Due to low costs and high light transmittance, solution-processed NiOx nanocrystals as the hole transport layer (HTL) for inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted great attention recently. Nevertheless, the intrinsic defects (Ni vacancies) in the NiOx film and the I vacancies at the buried interface of the perovskite limit the performance of PSCs. Thus, in this work, halogenated phenyl acids are used to modify the NiOx/perovskite interface. Our results show that the acid functional groups have a strong coordination with Ni vacancies in the NiOx film, giving rise to a high conductivity of NiOx films and thereby an improved hole transport capacity. The para-iodine gives the molecule a larger dipole moment, leading to a better energy level alignment between NiOx and perovskite and thereby a favorable hole transfer through the NiOx/perovskite interface. As a result, the PSC based on 4-iodophenylboronic acids yields a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.91 % and an improved fill factor of 86.18 %. The non-encapsulated device maintains above 80 % of its initial PCE after storing in N2 for 3000 h, in air with relative humidity (RH) of 50-70 % for 1000 h and under heating at 60 °C for 1000 h.

Abstract:NiOx is a promising hole-transporting material for perovskite solar cells due to its high hole mobility, good stability, and easy processability. In this work, we employed a simple solution-processed NiOx film as the hole-transporting layer in perovskite solar cells. When the thickness of the perovskite layer increased from 270 to 380 nm, the light absorption and photogenerated carrier density were enhanced and the transporting distance of electron and hole would also increase at the same time, resulting in a large charge transfer resistance and a long hole-extracted process in the device, characterized by the UV-vis, photoluminescence, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy spectra. Combining both of these factors, an optimal thickness of 334.2 nm was prepared with the perovskite precursor concentration of 1.35 M. Moreover, the optimal device fabrication conditions were further achieved by optimizing the thickness of NiOx hole-transporting layer and PCBM electron selective layer. As a result, the best power conversion efficiency of 15.71% was obtained with a Jsc of 20.51 mA·cm-2, a Voc of 988 mV, and a FF of 77.51% with almost no hysteresis. A stable efficiency of 15.10% was caught at the maximum power point. This work provides a promising route to achieve higher efficiency perovskite solar cells based on NiO or other inorganic hole-transporting materials.

Abstract:NiOx have been considered as an excellent material for hole transport layer (HTL) of perovskite solar cells because of its wide band gap, excellent optical transmittance, proper chemical stability and energy level matching with perovskite materials. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is hindered by the low conductivity of unmodified NiOx. Here, we reported an operative Na2S treated NiOx HTL, which could optimize the conductivity of the NiOx layers and the crystallinity of perovskite. The synergistic effect of Na cations and S anions could strengthen the conductivity of the NiOx HTL, improve the interface contact between NiOx and perovskite, and enhance the quality of the perovskite film, so as to boost photoelectricity performance of the device. The carrier dynamics have shown that doping of Na2S could not only diminish the interface defects of the HTL/perovskite layer, but also improve the hole extraction at the NiOx/perovskite interface. All these factors led to the improvements in short-circuit density (Jsc), fill factor (FF) and PCE of inverted planar perovskite solar cells. Consequently, Na2S-decorated NiOx HTL contributes to a stable device which attains a champion efficiency of 16.9%.

Abstract:Nickel oxide (NiO x ), as an inorganic p-type semiconductor, has been widely adopted as hole-transporting layers in perovskite solar cells. Despite its superior material stability, the poor charge extraction and multi-vacancies greatly restrict the photovoltages and efficiencies. Here, we propose a facile method to tune the surface oxidation states of NiO x films by a lithium salt treatment for photovoltage enhancement. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement indicates that the lithium treatment only reduces the Ni3+ sites at the top region rather than in the bulk of NiO x films. This graded distribution allows more efficient charge extraction at the NiO x /perovskite interface as revealed by photoluminescence studies. Through a combination of capacitance–voltage and drive-level capacitance profiling measurements, we confirm enhanced built-in potentials and decreased interface defect densities in lithium-modified devices. Further modifying the interface with a self-assembly monolayer, the energy offsets at the interface can be largely reduced. Based on these enhanced properties, the modified devices achieve a high-power conversion efficiency of 22.4% (0.07 cm2) with a 120 mV enhancement in photovoltage in comparison with the untreated devices.

Abstract:Nickel oxide (NiOx ) is one of the most promising hole transport materials for inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, its application is severely restrained due to unfavorable interfacial reactions and insufficient charge carrier extraction. Herein, a multifunctional modification at the NiOx /perovskite interface is developed via introducing fluorinated ammonium salt ligand to synthetically solve the obstacles. Specifically, the interface modification can chemically convert detrimental Ni≥3+ to lower oxidation state, resulting in the elimination of interfacial redox reactions. Meanwhile, interfacial dipole is incorporated simultaneously to tune the work function of NiOx and optimize energy level alignment, which effectively promotes the charge carrier extraction. Therefore, the modified NiOx -based inverted PSCs achieve a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.93%. Moreover, the unencapsulated devices obtain a significantly enhanced long-term stability, maintaining over 85% and 80% of the initial PCEs after storage in ambient air with a high relative humidity of 50-60% for 1000 h and continuous operation at maximum power point under one-sun illumination for 700 h, respectively.
Overcome Low Intrinsic Conductivity of NiOx through Triazinyl Modification for Highly Efficient and Stable Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Nickel oxide (NiOx) is a promising hole transport material in inverted organic‐inorganic metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, its low intrinsic conductivity hinders its further improvement in device performance. Here, we employ a trimercapto‐s‐triazine trisodium salt (TTTS) as a chelating agent of Ni2+ in the NiOx layer to improve its conductivity. Due to the electron‐deficient triazine ring, the TTTS complexes with Ni2+ in NiOx via strong Ni2+‐N coordination bond and increases the ratio of Ni3+: Ni2+. The increased Ni3+ concentration adjusts the band structure of NiOx, thus enhancing hole density and mobility, eventually improving the intrinsic conductivity of NiOx. As a result, the device with TTTS modification displays a champion PCE of 22.81%, 13.36% enhancement compared to the control device (20.12%). The encapsulated device based on modified‐NiOx layer maintains 94% of its initial power output at the maximum power point and continuous one‐sun illumination for 1000 h at 45 °C. In addition, the unencapsulated target devices also maintain 92% at 60 ± 5% relative humidity and 25 °C in air for 5000 h; and 91% at 85 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere for 1000 hours. Our research provides an effective strategy to enhance PCE and stability of inverted PSCs via modifying NiOx films with triazine molecule. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Numerical simulation of inverted planar perovskite solar cells based on NiOx hole transport layer was performed with AMPS-1D program. The simulated device parameters were shown to agree well with our experimental work. The simulated results revealed that the device contained typical p-i-n junction configuration. The optimum thickness of the absorber, the effects of the absorber quality, the defect density of interfaces, the effects of VBO and CBO, the interface contact at front and back electrodes were analyzed. Open-circuit voltage mainly depended on the defect density in CH3NH3PbI3 layer, the recombination at HTL/CH3NH3PbI3 and ETL/CH3NH3PbI3 interface, the values of VBO and CBO, while short-circuit current mainly depended on the thickness of CH3NH3PbI3 layer. Fill factor was significantly influenced by the interface contact at front and back electrodes. Remarkably, a power conversion efficiency of 21.8% is obtained under optimised conditions. Real devices with PCE of up to 15% were obtained by initially optimizing the preparation of CH3NH3PbI3 absorber layer. Our work can provide some important guidance for device design and optimization from the considerations of both theory and experiment.

Abstract:The emergence of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has attached great attention derived from the potential in improving stability. Charge transporting layer, especially hole transporting layer is crucial for efficient inverted PSCs. Organic materials were used as hole transporting layer previously. Recently, more and more inorganic hole transporting materials have been deployed for further improving the device stability. Nickel oxide (NiOx) as p-type metal oxide, owning high charge mobility and intrinsic stability, has been widely adopted in inverted PSCs. High performance over 20% efficiency has been achieved on NiOx base inverted PSCs. Herein, we have summarized recent progresses and strategies on the NiOx based PSCs, including the synthesis or deposition methods of NiOx, doping and surface modification of NiOx for efficient and stable PSCs. Finally, we will discuss current challenges of utilizing NiOx HTLs in PSCs and attempt to give probable solutions to make further development in efficient as well as stable NiOx based PSCs.

Abstract:Planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells have received a lot of attention due to their great potential, such as low-cost and rapidly improving performance. However, the poor fill surface coverage and numerous pinholes usually exist in the organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite layers, leading to undesirable electron-hole recombination. Herein, inverted cell structures based on NiOx/PCBM interfacial materials have been studied. A simple preheating method facilitates the formation of a relatively continuous and compact layer of well-crystallized CH3NH3PbI3-xClx perovskite by a one-step solution process, which can minimize film defects and thus improve the charge extraction dissociation and transport abilities at the interface. As a result, synchronized improvements in photovoltage (V-oc), photocurrent (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF) lead to similar to 25% enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE), compared to solar cells using conventional perovskite films. Our study highlights a simple and effective method to improve the perovskite film quality and the photovoltaic performance of inverted perovskite solar cells.
Improved Stability and Efficiency of Inverted Perovskite Solar Cell by Employing Nickel Oxide Hole Transporting Material Containing Ammonium Salt Stabilizer

Abstract:Ammonium salt is utilized in NiO as a relatively neutral stabilizer to improve the stability and hole transport capability of NiO. Inverted MAPbI3‐based perovskite solar cells based on this novel NiO exhibit high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.91% with exceptionally a high Voc of 1.13 V and excellent stability, maintaining 97% of its initial PCE after 800 h.Nickel oxide (NiO) is one of the promising hole‐transporting materials for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Despite the ongoing efforts to improve PSC performance with sol–gel NiO, there has been limited study on the usage and influences of stabilizers on NiO and the relevant performance of PSCs. Until now, most of the sol–gel NiO methods use chemical stabilizers based on strongly acidic or mild basic catalysts such as hydrochloric acid and monoethanolamine. However, it is evident that the remaining pH‐biased stabilizers in the film aggravate device stability. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a more stable and effective NiO, which can boost the performance of PSC. Here, the relatively neutral ammonium salt is utilized in NiO solution, which can improve the hole transport capability and stability of NiO. Under the optimum salt condition, energy level and hole conductivity are modulated favorably for hole transportation. Moreover, constructive interaction between the ammonium salt and perovskite enhances interfacial properties and reduces trap‐assisted recombination. Based on this novel NiO, the champion power conversion efficiency of 19.91% with an exceptionally high open‐circuit voltage of 1.13 V among the reported MAPbI3‐based PSCs is demonstrated. Furthermore, NiO with salt stabilizer secures long‐term device stability, maintaining 97% of initial power conversion efficiency (PCE) even after 800 h.

Inverted structure perovskite solar cells: A theoretical study

Abstract:We analysed perovskite CH3NH3PbI3-xClx inverted planer structure solar cell with nickel oxide (NiO) and spiro-MeOTAD as hole conductors. This structure is free from electron transport layer. The thickness is optimized for NiO and spiro-MeOTAD hole conducting materials and the devices do not exhibit any significant variation for both hole transport materials. The back metal contact work function is varied for NiO hole conductor and observed that Ni and Co metals may be suitable back contacts for efficient carrier dynamics. The solar photovoltaic response showed a linear decrease in efficiency with increasing temperature. The electron affinity and band gap of transparent conducting oxide and NiO layers are varied to understand their impact on conduction and valence band offsets. A range of suitable band gap and electron affinity values are found essential for efficient device performance.

Abstract:The light management is of vital importance for development of efficient inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which could maximize the light trapping and minimize optical loss. Herein, a novelly-designed, functional spherical NiO hole transporting layer (HTL) is reported for the first time to effectively increase light utilization and the final photocurrent of inverted MAPbI3 PSCs. Experimental and theoretical results indicate that such hollow NiO HTLs improves optical field distribution and light harvesting efficiency. This contributes to realize the better light utilization and higher photocurrent of over 24 mA cm−2, which is one of the highest reported values for NiO-based MAPbI3 PSCs. Besides, the synergistic Cu doping strategy was further employed to ensure the enhanced hole extraction and suppressed recombination loss. Eventually, this hollow Cu:NiOx PSCs feature desirable efficiency over 20%, along with the improved open-circuit voltage and low hysteresis. This work demonstrates the necessity of light management and unveils a simple approach for achieving efficient inverted NiO-based devices.

Abstract:With the continuous development of solar cells, the perovskite solar cells (PSCs), whose hole transport layer plays a vital part in collection of photogenerated carriers, have been studied by many researchers. Interface transport layers are important for efficiency and stability enhancement. In this paper, we demonstrated that lithium (Li) and cobalt (Co) codoped in the novel inorganic hole transport layer named NiOx, which were deposited onto ITO substrates via solution methods at room temperature, can greatly enhance performance based on inverted structures of planar heterojunction PSCs. Compared to the pristine NiOx films, doping a certain amount of Li and Co can increase optical transparency, work function, electrical conductivity and hole mobility of NiOx film. Furthermore, experimental results certified that coating CH3NH3PbIxCl3−x perovskite films on Li and Co- NiOx electrode interlayer film can improve chemical stability and absorbing ability of sunlight than the pristine NiOx. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs has a great improvement from 14.1% to 18.7% when codoped with 10% Li and 5% Co in NiOx. Moreover, the short-circuit current density (Jsc) was increased from 20.09 mA/cm2 to 21.7 mA/cm2 and the fill factor (FF) was enhanced from 0.70 to 0.75 for the PSCs. The experiment results demonstrated that the Li and Co codoped NiOx can be a effective dopant to improve the performance of the PSCs.

Abstract:Nickel oxide (NiOx) has exhibited great potential as an inorganic hole transport layer (HTL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to its wide optical bandgap and superior stability. In this study, we have modulated the Ni2+ vacancies in NiOx film by controlling deposition temperature in a hot-casting process, resulting the change of coordination structure and charge state of NiOx. Moreover, the change of the HOMO level of NiOx makes it more compatible with perovskite to decrease energy losses and enhance hole carrier injection efficiency. Besides, the defect modulation in the electronic structure of NiOx is beneficial for increasing the electrical conductivity and mobility, which are considered to achieve the balance of charge carrier transport and avoid charge accumulation at the interface between the perovskite and HTL effectively. Both experimental analyses and theoretical calculations reveal the increase of nickel vacancy defects change the electronic structure of NiOx by increasing the ratio of Ni3+/Ni2+ and improving the p-type characteristics. Accordingly, an optimal deposition temperature of the NiOx film at 120°C enabled a 36.24% improvement in the power conversion efficiency compared to that deposited at room temperature (25°C). Therefore, this work provides a facile method to manipulate the electronic structure of NiOx to improve the charge carrier transport and photovoltaic performance of related PSCs.

Abstract:Electron-beam-evaporated nickel oxide (NiOx) films are known for their high quality, precise control, and suitability for complex structures in perovskite (PVK) solar cells (PSCs). However, untreated NiOx films have inherent challenges, such as surface defects, relatively low intrinsic conductivity, and shallow valence band maximum, which seriously restrict the efficiency and stability of the devices. To address these challenges, we employ a dual coordination optimization strategy. The strategy includes low heating rate annealing of NiOx films and using an aminoguanidine nitrate spin coating process on the surfaces of NiOx films to strategically modify NiOx films itself and the interface of NiOx/PVK. Under the synergistic effect of this dual optimization method, the quality of the films is significantly improved and its p-type characteristics are enhanced. At the same time, the interface defects and energy level alignment of the films are effectively improved, and the charge extraction ability at the interface is improved. The combined treatment significantly improved the efficiency of inverted PSCs, from 17.85% to 20.31%, and enhanced device stability under various conditions. This innovative dual-coordinated optimization strategy provides a clear and effective framework for improving the performance of NiOx films and inverted PSCs.

Abstract:It is crucial to find a good material as a hole transport layer (HTL) to improve the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), devices with an inverted structure. Polyethylene dioxythiophene-poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and inorganic nickel oxide (NiOx) have become hotspots in the study of hole transport materials in PSCs on account of their excellent properties. In our research, NiOx and PEDOT: PSS, two kinds of hole transport materials, were prepared and compared to study the impact of the bottom layer on the light absorption and morphology of perovskite layer. By the way, some experimental parameters are simulated by wx Analysis of Microelectronic and Photonic Structures (wxAMPS). In addition, thin interfacial layers with deep capture levels and high capture cross sections were inserted to simulate the degradation of the interface between light absorption layer and PEDOT:PSS. This work realizes the combination of experiment and simulation. Exploring the mechanism of the influence of functional layer parameters plays a vital part in the performance of devices by establishing the system design. It can be found that the perovskite film growing on NiOx has a stronger light absorption capacity, which makes the best open-circuit voltage of 0.98 V, short-circuit current density of 24.55 mA/cm2, and power conversion efficiency of 20.01%.

Abstract:Fabrication of effective inorganic hole transport films at low temperature is crucial to move perovskite solar cells one step closer to mass production and then commercialization. Here, the authors report a photochemistry method to synthesize NiOx hole transport layer for perovskite solar cells with a champion performance of 22.45%.High crystallization and conductivity are always required for inorganic carrier transport materials for cheap and high‐performance inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). High temperature and external doping are inevitably introduced and thus greatly hamper the applications of inorganic materials for mass production of flexible and tandem devices. Here, an amorphous and dopant‐free inorganic material, Ni3+‐rich NiOx, is reported to be fabricated by a novel UV irradiation strategy, which is facile, easily scaled‐up, and energy‐saving because all the processing temperatures are below 82 ℃. The as‐prepared NiOx film shows highly improved conductivity and hole extraction ability. The rigid and flexible PSCs present the champion efficiencies of 22.45% and 19.7%, respectively. This work fills the gap of preparing metal oxide films at the temperature below 150 °C for inverted PSCs with the high efficiency of >22%. More importantly, this work upgrades the substantial understanding about inorganic materials to function well as efficient carrier transport layers without external doping and high crystallization.
