Abstract:Over the past decade, metalens exhibit great potential for applications in compact optical devices. By modulating the phase, amplitude and polarization of the incident light, metalens are applied in a variety of flat optical components, such as micro spectrometers, polarizers and light-field imaging. However, the intrinsic effect of metalens with large chromatic aberration significantly restricts its application in wide-spectrum imaging. Herein, we developed a broadband achromatic polarization insensitive metalens operating in the NIR region in transmission mode. The particle swarm algorithm was utilized to improve the wave aberration by optimizing the reference phase corresponds to each designed wavelength. FDTD simulation was conducted to characterize the focusing performance of the metalens. The focal length of the metalens changes less than 4µm as the incident wavelength is varied from 1µm to 1.4µm. The maximum focusing efficiency of the designed metalens with a numerical aperture of 0.45 is about 43% near wavelength λ = 1.33µm. This research also paves a way for the application of metalens in night vision imaging.

Abstract:Midinfrared devices based on metalenses are of great utility for numerous applications, including free-space communication, imaging, and molecule sensing. However, because of the intrinsic dispersion of their building bricks, metalenses significantly suffer from large chromatic aberration. In this paper, we propose an achromatic metalens that can operate over a broad band of wavelengths in the infrared region from 3.7 to 4.5 μm for circularly polarized incidences. The Pancharatnam-Berry phase and the propagation phase are used to control the wavefront of light and eliminate the chromatic aberration, respectively. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, we numerically study two devices: an achromatic focusing lens and a beam deflector. The simulation results demonstrate the devices have a focusing efficiency of about 20.7% in the infrared region from 3.7 to 4.5 μm . Abstract:The elimination of broadband chromatic aberrations is a crucial factor for focusing lenses. Conventional refractive glass lenses are bulky, unwieldy, and eradicating their chromatic dispersion is complicated. Dielectric metalenses represent a promising alternative due to their ultra-thin, ultra-compact, single-layer, and planar profile on the order of the wavelength or below. Here, we design an achromatic dielectric metalens for linear polarization that achieves continuous focusing performance over an ultra-broad band from 1.31 mu m to 1.55 mu m. The metalens consists of a single layer of elliptic Si nanocylinders with different radii meticulously designed for an accurate manipulation of the phase profile. The focal length remains constant with a less than 1.6% alternation over the entire operation bandwidth (compared with 9.4% alternation of a chromatic metalens). The high NA (0.36), high focal efficiency (average over 50%), and small FWHM all corroborate the excellent focusing performance of our metalens. Furthermore, the continuous broadband focusing performance is preserved under oblique incidence (10 degrees angle) with a stable focal length. The designed metalens offers important opportunities for applications in linear polarized optics, fiber sensors, laser scanning fluorescence microscopy, optical signal transmission, and integrated on-chip devices in the forthcoming future. High-NA achromatic metalenses by inverse design

Abstract:We use inverse design to discover metalens structures that exhibit broadband, achromatic focusing across low, moderate, and high numerical apertures. We show that standard unit-cell approaches cannot achieve high-efficiency high-NA focusing, even at a single frequency, due to the incompleteness of the unit-cell basis, and we provide computational upper bounds on their maximum efficiencies. At low NA, our devices exhibit the highest theoretical efficiencies to date. At high NA-of 0.9 with translation-invariant films and of 0.99 with "freeform" structures-our designs are the first to exhibit achromatic high-NA focusing.

Abstract:Metasurface provides a powerful platform to correct the chromatic aberration of conventional lenses in a flexible, integratable, and ultra-compact manner. Mid-wavelength infrared has promised many exciting applications ranged from molecular fingerprint detection to low-light-level night vision. Developing broadband achromatic metalens in mid-wavelength infrared becomes necessary to meet the increasingly urgent demands on high performance photonic devices. Here, we demonstrate the broadband achromatic metalenses from 3.5 to 5 µm with all-silicon metasurfaces. Large phase dispersion control range is achieved to realize metalenses with both large numerical apertures and sample sizes while maintaining high focusing efficiency. The experimental results verify the diffraction-limited achromatic focusing and imaging of the metalenses in mid-wavelength infrared. Additionally, we also demonstrate the versatility by successfully implementing the generation of the broadband achromatic focusing optical vortex (L = 2). This work represents a solid step toward practical implementation of metalens and may find applications in mid-wavelength infrared imaging and detections.

Abstract:Compared with conventional lenses, metalenses can offer smaller form factor, light weight and new functionality, and have become the focus of the recent investigations of metasurface. To date, quite a lot of studies have been reported for chromatic aberration correction of metalenses. Noting most work was carried out to satisfy the required group delay or dispersion by introducing sophisticated and integrated nanopillars, which are obtained using computationally intensive global search algorithms. Generally, the design is time-consuming. Here, we propose an alternative scheme, where metalens that corrects the chromatic aberration can be designed by optimizing the spectral degree of freedom C(ω), rather than relying on time-consuming algorithms. The proposed metalens is compatible with the complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication process. The numerically demonstrated metalens with a diameter of 200 μm and a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.24 has a small focal length fractional change (FLFC) of 4.1% over the wavelength of 9∼12 μm with an average efficiency of 51.7% in transmission mode. Moreover, the effect of fabrication deviations on the performance of the metalens is analyzed, showing critical dimension (CD) bias, sidewall angle and pillar height all have different levels of influence on the performance of the metalens.

Abstract:With superior capabilities for light manipulation and wavefront shaping, the metasurface recently has caught growing attention. However, the presence of chromatic aberration hinders metasurfaces, especially metalenses, from wider applications. Here, we design a polarization-independent broadband achromatic focusing metalens in the mid-infrared region, which covers continuous bands in 3–5 μm. Numerical simulation shows that different wavelengths can be focused to the same plane with a nearly diffraction-limited resolution, and can achieve an average focusing efficiency of nearly 70% in the whole bandwidth. We expect that our approach can underpin the development of integrated and mid-infrared imaging and detection.

Abstract:The correction of chromatic aberration and achievement of high numerical aperture (NA) are two main issues for the realistic application of metalenses in imaging and display systems. In this work, we design a broadband achromatic metalens (BAM) with high NA, which is composed of hybrid all-dielectric meta-atoms in the visible region. By simultaneously and independently manipulating the geometric phase and propagation phase, meta-atoms can focus the incident lights on the same spot. Besides, a large phase compensation can be obtained through the variation in structural parameters of the hybrid meta-atom, which is essential to achieve high-NA BAM. For demonstration, the achromatic metalens with NA of 0.68 over the spectrum from 420 to 700 nm is numerically simulated. The metalens possessing high NA, broad bandwidth, and diffraction-limited achromatic focusing performance can be potentially applied in the field of imaging, spectroscopy, display, etc.

Abstract:Metalenses provide unprecedented opportunities to overcome the limitations of conventional refractive lenses, which have been extensively studied to achieve achromatic focusing and imaging in various wavebands. However, it is a challenging task to create a metalens that can achieve achromatic focusing with high efficiency for a broad bandwidth covering the entire visible and near-infrared spectrum. Here, we present a design to overcome the difficulty by employing two types of silicon nitride pillars with different cross sections as optical phase shifters. Numerical results demonstrate diffraction-limited achromatic focusing for the ultra-broad bandwidth from 400 to 1120 nm. All the focal spots at different wavelengths are almost in the same position. The maximum focal shift from the metalens focal length over the ultra-broad waveband is less than 3 %. And the average transmittance and focusing efficiency are 90.2 % and 77.7 %, respectively. These results indicate significant improvement over the previously reported achromatic metalenses in terms of focal-shift suppression and wideband operation with high efficiency. The research provides a means to develop a high-quality achromatic metalens for the entire visible and near-infrared spectrum.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have shown excellent ability in manipulating light fields. However, the intrinsic chromatic aberration impairs the quality of their broadband operation, which is a serious problem restricting the application of metadevices, especially metalenses. In this paper, a polarization-independent broadband achromatic metalens composed of engineered structures that have spatially varying gradient sizes is devised to focus the light over the mid-infrared region from 3 to 5 µm. The proposed dielectric metalens is constructed by an array of meta-units with a hollowed square pillar. By tuning its structural parameters, the optical response of the meta-unit turns out to be broadband achromatic, insensitive to the polarization state, and of high efficiency. Numerical simulation results show that the designed metalens can significantly suppress chromatic aberrations over a broad mid-infrared and hold a focusing efficiency of nearly 75%. Our work is beneficial to improving the mid-infrared broadband imaging quality and detection efficiency.

Abstract:Optical metalenses offer a compact approach for the development of nanoscale optical devices with various imaging functionalities. Realizing high-quality images using metalenses with large numerical aperture (NA) requires eliminating unwanted optical aberrations. Existing strategies have largely focused only on correcting chromatic aberrations, and a metalens capable of simultaneously correcting chromatic and spherical aberrations has not yet been developed. Here, this issue is addresed by realizing an aplanatic phase profile for a red-green-blue (RGB) achromatic metalens, thereby demonstrating an RGB-achromatic aplanatic metalens. This device consists of crystalline silicon nanostructures and it enables RGB-achromatic aplanatic focusing with an NA of 0.635. The focal length of metalens remains unchanged at the three RGB wavelengths, whereas the associated focal spots are significantly smaller than those of an RGB-achromatic metalens with spherical aberrations. An enhanced RGB imaging resolution is demonstrated, offering exciting opportunities to power up various imaging and display applications using flat metalenses. This paper demonstrates a high NA RGB-achromatic aplanatic metalens which successfully eliminates chromatic aberration at three RGB wavelengths, while the associated focal spots are significantly smaller than those of an RGB-achromatic metalens with spherical aberration. Abstract:Metalens are planar lenses composed of the subwavelength arrays, which have unconventional and versatile functionalities to manipulate the light fields compared with the traditional lens. It is noted that the most metalens are designed in a monochromatic mode in the visible or mid-infrared range (mid-IR), however, the broadband range is needed in many practical applications, such as spectroscopy, sensing, and imaging. Here, we design and demonstrate a broadband achromatic dielectric metalens in the mid-IR range of 4 μm–5 μm for near diffraction-limited (1.0 λ ) focusing. The broadband achromatic propagation and focusing of the metalens are designed and simulated by constructing and optimizing the phase profile. The Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phases of all the elements contribute to the main phase increment of the whole phase profile of the metalens. The additional phase is constructed and optimized by using the random search algorithm to obtain the optimized size of all the elements. The focusing efficiency of the achromatic metalens is also optimized and averaged as the result of phase optimization within a wide band for the building elements, while it is lowered comparing with the regular metalens without broadband achromatic designing. Using this combined designing approach, various flat achromatic devices with the broadband metalens can find a new way for full-color detection and imaging.

Abstract:As an important parameter for evaluating optical devices, chromatic aberration is an enduring research hotspot in optics. The traditional bulk lens relies on the polished surface profile on the transparent optical material to achieve the required gradual phase change. Compared with the traditional lens, the metalens can achieve the effect of focusing the beam with a more suitable small size standard. In this paper, the geometric phase method is used to realize the phase shift required by the surface of the achromatic metalens through the unique design of the nano-unit column array. In order to be applied to the optical path of multi-wavelength phase microscopy imaging, the metalens designed in this paper effectively eliminates chromatic aberration in the visible light band from 500 nm to 595 nm and improves the imaging resolution. It also satisfy the needs of modern optical devices for ultra-light, ultra-thin and easy portability, and can be used in a variety of optical instruments, aerospace and military fields.
Optimization-free approach for broadband achromatic metalens of high-numerical-aperture with high-index dielectric metasurface

Abstract:Broadband achromatic metalenses are highly desirable for realistic applications in focusing and imaging. In this paper, a group of dielectric double-strip meta-atoms of high-index are proposed to achieve a large range of group delay in a broadband near-infrared range. And an optimization-free method is developed for the simple and fast design of broadband achromatic metalenses of high-numerical-aperture, which treats the dispersion as a function of radius and independent of wavelength. To verify the proposed meta-atoms and the optimization-free design approach, an achromatic metalens is designed with a high-numerical-aperture of NA = 0.81 and a broad bandwidth of 120 nm within the wavelength range from 1470 nm to 1590 nm. Numerical simulations reveal that the focal length only has a small variation of 0.27λ 0 (0.17λ 0/ΝΑ2, λ 0 = 1530 nm), the depth of focus is smaller than 2.85λ 0, and the average transverse size of the focal spot is less than 0.68λ 0, which is slightly larger than the diffraction limit of 0.617λ 0 (0.5λ 0/NA). Compared to other reported achromatic metalenses, the proposed lens has a larger numerical aperture and smaller depth of focus. In addition, the proposed optimization-free method makes it easier to design achromatic metalens with high-numerical-aperture and improved axial resolution.

Abstract:Metasurfaces demonstrate excellent capabilities in manipulating the phase, amplitude and polarization of light. Metalens, as a typical kind of metasurface devices, shows great prospect in simplifying imaging systems. However, like diffractive optical elements, intrinsic dispersion of metasurfaces is high. Thus, significant chromatic aberration is present in common metalenses, deteriorating imaging quality under broadband illumination condition and limiting their applications. To tackle this problem, broadband achromatic metalenses have been proposed and demonstrated in the visible and near-infrared wavelength regions so far. However, broadband achromatic metalens working in the mid-wave and long-wave infrared is still rare. In this paper, thanks to the ingenious design of meta-units that provide the required local phase and phase dispersion, several all-silicon broadband achromatic metalenses working in the mid-wave infrared (3-5 mu m) or long-wave infrared (8-14 mu m) wavelengths are proposed. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the designed broadband achromatic metalenses can provide a near-constant focal length with small deviations and an average focusing efficiency of about 70% over the whole operation bandwidths. In addition, these metalenses hold near diffraction-limited focusing capability and polarization-independent focusing features. The achromatic metalenses proposed here are beneficial for improving imaging quality under broadband illumination and increasing detection efficiency of mid-wave and long-wave infrared detection systems.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have the ability to flexibly control the light wavefront, and they are expected to fill the gaps of traditional optics. However, various aberrations pose challenges for the application of metasurfaces in the wide angle and wide spectral ranges. The previous multi-aberration simultaneous optimization works had shortcomings such as large computational load, complex structure, and low generality. Here, we propose a metalens design method that corrects both monochromatic and chromatic aberrations simultaneously. The monochromatic aberration-corrected phase distribution is obtained by the optical design, and the chromatic aberration is reduced by using the original search algorithm combined with dispersion engineering. The designed single-layered wide-angle achromatic metalens has a balanced and efficient focusing effect in the mid-infrared band from 3.7 μm to 5 μm and a wide angle of ±30°. The design method proposed has the advantages of low computational load, wide application range, and easy experimental fabrication, which provides new inspiration for the development of generalized software for the design and optimization of metasurfaces.

Abstract:Metasurface can use artificial microstructures to manipulate electromagnetic waves more accurately and flexibly. All-dielectric metalens have a wide range of materials and low cost so it has a wide application prospect. Herein, we propose a all-dielectric achromatic metalens built with Si as the structural unit that can operate over a broadband of wavelengths in the visible region. It controls the wavefront of light through the Pancharatnam–Berry phase and propagation phase to eliminate the chromatic aberration. Meanwhile, we also use Gerchberg–Saxton algorithm and its improved algorithm to iterate over multiple design wavelengths and obtain holographic phases suitable for broadband. Thus, both the metalenses and holographic metasurfaces can achieve achromatic broadband in the visible light range, which provides a new method for the development of meta-optical imaging devices.
