Abstract:The aim of this paper is to give the geometric realization of regular path complexes via (co)homology groups with coefficients in a ring R. Concretely, for each regular path complex P, we associate it with a singular Δ-complex S(P) and show that the (co)homology groups of P are isomorphic to those of S(P) with coefficients in R. As a direct result we recognize path (co)homology as Hochschild (co)homology in case that R is commutative and P regular finite. Analogues of the Eilenberg-Zilber theorem and Künneth formula are also showed for the Cartesian product and the join of two regular path complexes. In fact, we meanwhile improve some previous results which are covered by these conclusions in this paper.

Abstract:For any natural numbers $k \leq n$, the rational cohomology ring of the space of continuous maps $S^{2k-1} \to S^{2n-1}$ (respectively, $S^{4k-1} \to S^{4n-1}$) equivariant under the Hopf action of the circle (respectively, of the group $S^3$ of unit quaternions) is naturally isomorphic to that of the Stiefel manifold $V_k({\mathbb C}^n)$ (respectively, $V_k({\mathbb H}^n)$). The natural maps of integral cohomology groups of these spaces of equivariant maps to cohomology of Stiefel manifolds are surjective but not injective.

Abstract:We study the stable cohomology groups of the mapping class groups of surfaces with twisted coefficients given by the $d^{th}$ exterior powers of the first rational homology of the unit tangent bundles of the surfaces $\tilde{H}_{\mathbb{Q}}$. These coefficients are outside of the traditional framework of cohomological stability. They form a module $H_{\mathrm{st}}^{*}(\Lambda^{d}\tilde{H}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ over the stable cohomology algebra of the mapping class groups with trivial coefficients denoted by $\mathrm{Sym}_{\mathbb{Q}}(\mathcal{E})$. If $d\neq 2$, the $\mathrm{Tor}$-group in each degree of $H_{\mathrm{st}}^{*}(\Lambda^{d}\tilde{H}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ does not vanish, and we compute all these $\mathrm{Tor}$-groups explicitly for $d \leq 5$. In particular, for each $d\neq 2$, the module $H_{\mathrm{st}}^{*}(\Lambda^{d}\tilde{H}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ is not free over $\mathrm{Sym}_{\mathbb{Q}}(\mathcal{E})$, while it is free for $d=2$.For comparison, we also compute the stable cohomology group with coefficients in the $d^{th}$ exterior powers of the first rational cohomology of the unit tangent bundle of the surface, which fit into the classical framework of cohomological stability.

Abstract:We study homological invariants of étale groupoids arising from Smale spaces, continuing on our previous work, but going beyond the stably disconnected case by incorporating resolutions in the space direction. We show that the homology groups defined by Putnam are isomorphic to the Crainic-Moerdijk groupoid homology with integer coefficients. We also show that the K-groups of C*-algebras of stable and unstable equivalence relations have finite rank. For unstably disconnected Smale spaces, we provide a cohomological spectral sequence whose second page is the (stable) homology groups, and converges to the K-groups of the unstable C*-algebra.

Abstract:Charney and Lee have shown that the rational cohomology of the Satake-Baily-Borel compactification the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g stabilizes as g grows and they computed this stable cohomology as a Hopf algebra. We give a relatively simple algebro-geometric proof of their theorem that also takes into account the mixed Hodge structure that is present here. We find the latter to be impure.

Abstract:We show that there is a stable homotopy theory of profinite spaces and use it for two main applications. On the one hand we construct an étale topological realization of the stable motivic homotopy theory of smooth schemes over a base field of arbitrary characteristic in analogy to the complex realization functor for fields of characteristic zero. On the other hand we get a natural setting for étale cohomology theories. In particular, we define and discuss an étale topological cobordism theory for schemes. It is equipped with an Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence starting from étale cohomology. Finally, we construct maps from algebraic to étale cobordism and discuss algebraic cobordism with finite coefficients over an algebraically closed field after inverting a Bott element.

Unstable cohomology of $\mathsf{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z})$ and the odd commutative graph complex

Abstract:We study a closed differential form on the symmetric space of positive definite matrices, which is defined using the Pfaffian and is $\mathsf{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z})$ invariant up to a sign. It gives rise to an infinite family of unstable classes in the compactly-supported cohomology of the locally symmetric space for $\mathsf{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{Z})$ with coefficients in the orientation bundle. Furthermore, by applying the Pfaffian forms to the dual Laplacian of graphs, and integrating them over the space of edge lengths, we construct an infinite family of cocycles for the odd commutative graph complex. By explicit computation, we show that the first such cocycle gives a non-trivial class in $H^{-6}(\mathsf{GC}_3)$.

Equivalences of the form $Σ^V X \simeq Σ^W X$ in equivariant stable homotopy theory

Abstract:We study equivalences of the form $\Sigma^{V}X\simeq \Sigma^{W}X$, where $G$ is a compact Lie group, $X$ is a $G$-spectrum, and $V$ and $W$ are $G$-representations. These equivalences encode a periodicity phenomenon in $G$-equivariant homotopy theory which generalizes the classical James periodicity for $G = C_2$. When $X = C(a_\lambda)$ is the cofiber of an Euler class, we construct an $RO(G)$-graded $J$-homomorphism $J\colon \pi_\lambda KO_G\rightarrow \pi_\star^G C(a_\lambda)^\times$ which gives control over these periodicities. It also produces infinite periodic families in the $G$-equivariant stable stems. We illustrate this with several explicit examples. More generally, our work gives information about $RO(G)$-graded units in equivariant stable cohomotopy rings. We apply this to construct universal periodicities and differentials in the $G$-homotopy fixed point spectral sequence, and other equivariant Atiyah--Hirzebruch spectral sequences.

Simplicial bounded cohomology and stability

Abstract:We introduce a set of combinatorial techniques for studying the simplicial bounded cohomology of semi-simplicial sets, simplicial complexes and posets. We apply these methods to prove several new bounded acyclicity results for semi-simplicial sets appearing in the homological stability literature. Our strategy is to recast classical arguments (due to Bestvina, Maazen, van der Kallen, Vogtmann, Charney and, recently, Galatius--Randal-Williams) in the setting of bounded cohomology using uniformly bounded refinements of well-known simplicial tools. Combined with ideas developed by Monod and De la Cruz Mengual--Hartnick, we deduce slope-$1/2$ stability results for the bounded cohomology of two large classes of linear groups: general linear groups over any ring with finite Bass stable rank and certain automorphism groups of quadratic modules over the integers or any field of characteristic zero. We expect that many other results in the literature on homological stability admit bounded cohomological analogues by applying the blueprint provided in this work.

Abstract:The non-equivariant topology of Stiefel manifolds has been studied extensively, culminating in a result of Miller demonstrating that a Stiefel manifold splits stably to a wedge of Thom spaces over Grassmannians. Equivariantly, one can consider spaces of isometries between representations as an analogue to Stiefel manifolds. This concept, however, yields a different theory to the non-equivariant case. We first construct a variation on the theory of the functional calculus before studying the homotopy-theoretic properties of this theory. This allows us to construct the main result; a natural tower of G-spectra running down from equivariant isometries which manifests the pieces of the non-equivariant splitting in the form of the homotopy cofibres of the tower. Furthermore, we detail extra topological properties and special cases of this theory, developing explicit expressions covering the tower's geometric and topological structure. We conclude with two detailed conjectures which provide an avenue for future study. Firstly we explore how our theory interacts with the splitting of Miller, proving partial results linking in our work with Miller's and conjecturing even deeper connections. Finally, we begin to calculate the equivariant K-theory of the tower, conjecturing and providing evidence towards the idea that the rich topological structure will be mirrored on the K-theory level by a similarly deep algebraic structure.

Let Sh denote the sharbly resolution of St. By Borel-Serre duality, $H^{n(n-1)/2-i}(SL_n(Z),Q)$ is isomorphic to $H_i(SL_n(Z),St)$. The latter is isomorphic to the homology of the $SL_n(Z)$-coinvariants of Sh. We produce nonzero classes in $H_i(SL_n(Z),St)$ for certain small $i$ in terms of sharbly cycles and cosharbly cocycles.

The spheres can have different dimension, but need to satisfy a certain connectivity assumption. The main theorems of this paper extend homological stability results for automorphism spaces of connected sums of products of spheres of the same dimension by Berglund and Madsen.

Abstract:We analyze stable homology over associative rings and obtain results over Artin algebras and commutative noetherian rings. Our study develops similarly for these classes; for simplicity we only discuss the latter here. Stable homology is a broad generalization of Tate homology. Vanishing of stable homology detects classes of rings---among them Gorenstein rings, the original domain of Tate homology. Closely related to gorensteinness of rings is Auslander's G-dimension for modules. We show that vanishing of stable homology detects modules of finite G-dimension. This is the first characterization of such modules in terms of vanishing of (co)homology alone. Stable homology, like absolute homology, Tor, is a theory in two variables. It can be computed from a flat resolution of one module together with an injective resolution of the other. This betrays that stable homology is not balanced in the way Tor is balanced. In fact, we prove that a ring is Gorenstein if and only if stable homology is balanced.

Abstract:For a manifold $W$ and an $E_d$-algebra $A$, the factorisation homology $\int_W A$ can be seen as a generalisation of the classical configuration space of labelled particles in $W$. It carries an action by the diffeomorphism group $\mathrm{Diff}_\partial(W)$, and for the generalised surfaces $W_{g,1}:=(\#^g S^n\times S^n)\setminus\mathring D{}^{2n}$, we have stabilisation maps among the quotients $\int_{W_{g,1}} A\,/\!/\,\mathrm{Diff}_\partial(W_{g,1})$ which increase the genus $g$. In the case where a highly-connected tangential structure $\theta$ is taken into account, we describe its stable homology in terms of the iterated bar construction $\mathrm{B}^{2n}A$ and a tangential Thom spectrum $\mathrm{MT}\theta$. We also consider the question of homological stability.

We generalize a splitting result by Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen, and Gitler that determines the stable homotopy type of the a polyhedral product. We also introduce a motivic refinement of moment-angle complexes and use the splitting result to compute cellular $\mathbb{A}^1$-homology, and $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristics.

Abstract:The main goal of this article is to study the cohomology rings and their applications of moment-angle complexes associated to Gorenstein* complexes, especially, the applications in combinatorial commutative algebra and combinatorics. First, we give a topological characterization of Gorenstein* complexes in terms of Alexander duality (as an application we give a topological proof of Stanley's Theorem). Next we give some cohomological transformation formulae of $\mathcal {Z}_{K}$, which are induced by some combinatorial operations on the Gorenstein* complex $K$, such as the connected sum operation and stellar subdivisions. We also prove that $\mathcal {Z}_{K}$ is a prime manifold whenever $K$ is a flag $2$-sphere by proving the indecomposability of their cohomology rings. Then we use these results to give the unique decomposition of the cohomology rings of moment-angle manifolds associated to simplicial $2$-spheres, and explain how to use it to detect the cohomological rigidity problem of these moment-angle manifolds.

Cohomology rings of the moduli of one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study on the cohomology rings of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{d,\chi}$ of semistable one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane. We introduce a set of tautological relations of geometric origin, including Mumford-type relations, and prove that their ideal is generated by certain primitive relations via the Virasoro operators. Using BPS integrality and the computational efficiency of Virasoro operators, we show that our geometric relations completely determine the cohomology rings of the moduli stacks up to degree 5. As an application, we verify the refined Gopakumar--Vafa/Pandharipande--Thomas correspondence for local $\mathbb{P}^2$ in degree 5. Furthermore, we propose a substantially strengthened version of the $P=C$ conjecture, originally introduced by Shen and two of the authors. This can be viewed as an analogue of the $P=W$ conjecture in a compact and Fano setting.
