Chemical components of Cannabis sativa.

Abstract:To the Editor.— We wish to report the first isolation, to our knowledge, of the amino acid proline and a steroidal mixture of sitosterol, stigmasterol, and campesterol from marihuana. Proline and the steroidal mixture were isolated from an Indian variant of Cannabis sativa Linnaeus (marihuana). Additionally, neurine was isolated, for the first time, from the roots of a Mexican variant. Choline previously identified by Schulze and Frankfurt, was also isolated from the roots. Conformation of structure identification was obtained by thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography, and combined gas chromatography-mass spectometry and other classical structure elucidation methods. The steroidal concentration was approximately 0.1% of dried plant material, whereas the proline concentration was 0.01%. Choline and neurine were present in the dried roots at 0.01%.
