Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an emerging class of porous materials with potential applications in gas storage, separations, catalysis, and chemical sensing. Despite numerous advantages, applications of many MOFs are ultimately limited by their stability under harsh conditions. Herein, the recent advances in the field of stable MOFs, covering the fundamental mechanisms of MOF stability, design, and synthesis of stable MOF architectures, and their latest applications are reviewed. First, key factors that affect MOF stability under certain chemical environments are introduced to guide the design of robust structures. This is followed by a short review of synthetic strategies of stable MOFs including modulated synthesis and postsynthetic modifications. Based on the fundamentals of MOF stability, stable MOFs are classified into two categories: high-valency metal-carboxylate frameworks and low-valency metal-azolate frameworks. Along this line, some representative stable MOFs are introduced, their structures are described, and their properties are briefly discussed. The expanded applications of stable MOFs in Lewis/Brønsted acid catalysis, redox catalysis, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, gas storage, and sensing are highlighted. Overall, this review is expected to guide the design of stable MOFs by providing insights into existing structures, which could lead to the discovery and development of more advanced functional materials.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of porous crystalline materials constructed from organic ligands and metal ions/clusters. Owing to their unique advantages, they have attracted more and more attention in recent years and numerous studies have revealed their great potential in various applications. Many important applications of MOFs inevitably involve harsh alkaline operational environments. To achieve high performance and long cycling life in these applications, high stability of MOFs against bases is necessary. Therefore, the construction of base-stable MOFs has become a critical research direction in the MOF field. This review gives a historic summary of the development of base-stable MOFs in the last few years. The key factors that can determine the robustness of MOFs under basic conditions are analyzed. We also demonstrate the exciting achievements that have been made by utilizing base-stable MOFs in different applications. In the end, we discuss major challenges for the further development of base-stable MOFs. Some possible methods to address these problems are presented.

Abstract:The construction of thousands of well-defined, porous, metal-organic framework (MOF) structures, spanning a broad range of topologies and an even broader range of pore sizes and chemical functionalities, has fuelled the exploration of many applications. Accompanying this applied focus has been a recognition of the need to engender MOFs with mechanical, thermal and/or chemical stability. Chemical stability in acidic, basic and neutral aqueous solutions is important. Advances over recent years have made it possible to design MOFs that possess different combinations of mechanical, thermal and chemical stability. Here, we review these advances and the associated design principles and synthesis strategies. We focus on how these advances may render MOFs effective as heterogeneous catalysts, both in chemically harsh condensed phases and in thermally challenging conditions relevant to gas-phase reactions. Finally, we briefly discuss future directions of study for the production of highly stable MOFs.

Abstract:Functional porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been explored for a number of potential applications in catalysis, chemical sensing, water capture, gas storage, and separation. MOFs are among the most promising candidates to address challenges facing our society related to energy and environment, but the successful implementation of functional porous MOF materials are contingent on their stability; therefore, the rational design of stable MOFs plays an important role towards the development of functional porous MOFs. In this Focus article, we summarize progress in the rational design and synthesis of stable MOFs with controllable pores and functionalities. The implementation of reticular chemistry allows for the rational top-down design of stable porous MOFs with targeted topological networks and pore structures from the pre-selected building blocks. We highlight the reticular synthesis and applications of stable MOFs: 1) MOFs based on high valent metal ions (e.g., Al3+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Ti4+ and Zr4+) and carboxylate ligands; 2) MOFs based on low valent metal ions (e.g., Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) and azolate linkers. We envision that the synthetic strategies, including modulated synthesis and post-synthetic modification, can potentially be extended to other more complex systems like metal-phosphonate framework materials.

Abstract:MOFs are constructed by self-assembly of metal ions/clusters and organic linkers. They have received much attention owing to the benefits of well-exposed active sites, ultrahigh porosity, and abundant pore structures. However, some traditional MOFs suffer from poor conductivity and stability. MXenes with high electrical conductivity and rich surface functional groups can be combined with MOFs to solve the problem. In this review, the synthesis strategies of MOF/MXene-based composites are summarized, including MOF/MXene, MOF derivatives/MXene and MOF derivatives/MXene derivatives. The functionalities of MOF/MXene-based composites are also studied comprehensively. MXenes can not only enhance the stability and conductivity of single MOFs, but also bring many new functionalities, such as template effect. These advantages enable synthetic MOF/MXene-based composites to be applied in many fields, such as supercapacitors, batteries, electrocatalysts, photocatalysts, sensors, microwave adsorption. Furthermore, the influences of the structure on the properties for MOF/MXene-based composites are also discussed. Finally, the authors prospect the future opportunities and challenges of MOF/MXene-based composites.

Abstract:Iron-based metal–organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) have captured considerable attention owing to their intriguing structural architectures, excellent stability, durability, and function. Fe-MOFs are anticipated to become the most appropriate MOF materials promising practical applications. In the present review, the architectures of stable Fe-MOFs are discussed along with the latest research progress on their synthesis and multifunctional applications. Synthetic methods of Fe-MOFs including hydrothermal, diffusion methods, microwave, xerogel conversion, and modulation synthesis followed by postsynthesis modifications and their potential applications in catalysis, gas storage, and sensors are outlined. The present study aims to provide prospects to explore advances in assembly and extending Fe-MOFs for more and much better practical applications.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developing at an unexpected rate over the last two decades. However, the unsatisfactory chemical stability of most MOFs hinders some of the fundamental studies in this field and the implementation of these materials for practical applications. The stability in a MOF framework is mostly believed to rely upon the robustness of the M-L (M = metal ion, L = ligand) coordination bonds. However, the role of organic linkers as agents of stability to the framework, particularly the linker rigidity/flexibility, has been mostly overlooked. In this work, we demonstrate that a ligand-rigidification strategy can enhance the stability of MOFs. Three series of ligand rotamers with the same connectivity but different flexibility were prepared. Thirteen Zr-based MOFs were constructed with the Zr6O4(OH4)(-CO2) n units ( n = 8 or 12) and corresponding ligands. These MOFs allow us to evaluate the influence of ligand rigidity, connectivities, and structure on the stability of the resulting materials. It was found that the rigidity of the ligands in the framework strongly contributes to the stability of corresponding MOFs. Furthermore, water adsorption was performed on some chemically stable MOFs, showing excellent performance. It is expected that more MOFs with excellent stability could be designed and constructed by utilizing this strategy, ultimately promoting the development of MOFs with higher stability for synthetic chemistry and practical applications.

Abstract:Within the past few decades, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted much attention due to their porous structure, periodicity, and tunability; however, the lack of good stability of MOFs limits its further application, while COFs are limited by the lack of metal active sites. Recently, a new kind of organic frameworks appeared, which used metal clusters of MOFs as secondary building units (SBUs) and synthesized covalent-metal–organic frameworks (C-MOFs) through the dynamic covalent bonding linkage of COFs. C-MOFs combine the advantages of both MOFs and COFs, and also possess the adjustable and predictable periodic porous structure, which has good stability at the and also the presence of metal active sites, which is a novel material. In this review, we provide an overview of the research advances in the synthesis strategies of C-MOFs, as well as the progress of their applications in catalysis, gas storage, and energy storage. In addition, the article ends with a look at the future direction of C-MOFs.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with high surface areas and abundant active sites, have been widely studied as adsorbents and catalysts in water treatments. Although some MOFs are water stable, they do not always keep their stability in water treatments, because MOFs would face threats from not only water but also the water matrix related factors, such as pH, inorganic ions, metal ions and reactive oxygen species. Thus, it is meaningful to have insight into the relationship between MOFs stability and water matrix. However, a lot of studies have reported the excellent performances of MOFs in water treatments, but few ones have deeply revealed the instability of MOFs. In addition, overestimation of MOFs stability might occur, because the commonly used judgment methods of MOFs stability have their disadvantages. Taking the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern as an example, partial loss of metal ions and ligands would not result in the obvious change in the XRD pattern of MOFs. Hence, this review pays attention to the fundamentals of MOFs stability, the chemical stability of MOFs in water treatments and judging methods of MOFs stability. Overall, this review is expected to guide a comprehensive understanding of MOFs stability in water treatments, and further help to select suitable MOFs according to the application environments.

Abstract:Group 4 metal-based metal-organic frameworks (MIV-MOFs), including Ti-, Zr-, and Hf-based MOFs, are one of the most attractive classes of MOF materials owing to their superior chemical stability and structural tunability. Despite being a relatively new field, MIV-MOFs have attracted significant research attention in the past few years, leading to exciting advances in syntheses and applications. In this outlook, we start with a brief overview of the history and current status of MIV-MOFs, emphasizing the challenges encountered in their syntheses. The unique properties of MIV-MOFs are discussed, including their high chemical stability and strong tolerance toward defects. Particular emphasis is placed on defect engineering in Zr-MOFs which offers additional routes to tailor their functions. Photocatalysis of MIV-MOF is introduced as a representative example of their emerging applications. Finally, we conclude with the perspective of new opportunities in synthesis and defect engineering.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of organic-inorganic hybrid materials that are self-assembled metal clusters and organic ligands. Because MOFs have an ultrahigh surface area, a controllable size, and adjustable chemical properties, which are not available in other porous materials, it has broad application potential in chemical sensing, gas storage, and catalysis. However, the stability of MOFs in water is poor. The presence of water molecules changes the structures and properties of MOFs, which limits their industrial application in advanced oxidation process. In this paper, the definition of water stability is introduced in detail, and the damage mechanism of water molecules on MOFs is analyzed from the perspective of thermodynamic stability and kinetic stability. According to varying factors that affect MOFs' water stability, corresponding methods to improve MOFs water stability are proposed, and research trends on the stability of MOFs in water are speculated.

Abstract:Due to their superior hydrophilicity and conductivity, ultra-high volumetric capacitance, and rich surface-chemistry properties, MXenes exhibit unique and excellent performance in catalysis, energy storage, electromagnetic shielding, and life sciences. Since they are derived from ceramics (MAX phase) through etching, one of the challenges in MXenes preparation is the inevitable exposure of metal atoms on their surface and embedding of anions and cations. Because the as-obtained MXenes are always in a thermodynamically metastable state, they tend to react with trace oxygen or oxygen-containing groups to form metal oxides or degrade, leading to sharply declined activity and impaired performance. Therefore, improving the stability of MXenes-based materials is of practical significance in relevant applications. Unfortunately, there lacks a comprehensive review in the literature on relevant topics. To help promote the wide applications of MXenes, we review from the following aspects: (i) insights into the factors affecting the stability of MXenes-based materials, including oxidation of MXenes flakes, stability of MXenes colloidal solutions, and swelling and degradation of MXenes thin-film, (ii) strategies for enhancing the stability of MXenes-based materials by optimizing MAX phase synthesis and modifying the MXenes preparation, and (iii) techniques for further increasing the stability of freshly prepared MXenes-based materials via controlling the storage conditions, and forming shielding on the surface and/or edge of MXenes flakes. Finally, some outlooks are proposed on the future developments and challenges of highly active and stable MXenes. We aim to provide guidance for the design, preparation, and applications of MXenes-based materials with excellent stability and activity.

Abstract:New metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on flexible tetra-carboxylate ligands and Cu(II) are designed to gain stimuli-responsive materials. Unstable MOFs can be more stable with unabated flexibility by replacing coordinated solvent molecules with auxiliary N-based ligands. Two of them are intensively studied by in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis and the unit cell parameters during transformations have been observed in detail. They undergo exceptional structural transformations which can be divided into two processes: the thermal-responsive phase transition and the solvent-responsive phase transition. The thermal-responsive phase transition takes place in a narrow temperature interval reversibly. However, the solvent-responsive phase transition is a gradual and irreversible process. The stimuli-responsive mechanism has also been explored by comparing the parameters of the crystal structures under different temperatures. Fascinatingly, their exceptional structural transformations correlate with the flexibility of the ligand fragments and the [Cu2(RCOO)4] clusters.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of crystalline porous coordination materials with systematically designable network structures and tunable properties, demonstrating great potential for applications in diverse fields. However, the generally poor stability of dynamic coordination bonds in MOFs hinders their practical applications in harsh environments. Although MOFs have been used as precursors and templates for the production of various derivatives with enhanced stability via thermal treatment, the extreme thermolytic conditions often destroy the network structures, consequently resulting in obvious decreases in porosity and surface areas with undesired characteristics. This feature article discusses the generally used pathways for the transformation of MOFs and the advanced fabrication methods for the production of various MOF-derived materials. We particularly emphasize the recent progress in the designed strategies for customization and derivation tailoring of MOFs, which could produce MOF-derived functional materials with remaining framework skeletons and inherited characteristics (surface area, porosity and properties) of the parent MOFs, exhibiting great promise for practical applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel crystalline porous materials assembled from metal ions and organic ligands. The adaptability of their design and the fine-tuning of the pore structures make them stand out in porous materials. Furthermore, by integrating MOF guest functional materials with other hosts, the novel composites have synergistic benefits in numerous fields such as batteries, supercapacitors, catalysis, gas storage and separation, sensors, and drug delivery. This article starts by examining the structural relationship between the host and guest materials, providing a comprehensive overview of the research advancements in various types of MOF-functionalized composites reported to date. The review focuses specifically on four types of spatial structures, including MOFs being (1) embedded in nanopores, (2) immobilized on surface, (3) coated as shells and (4) assembled into hybrids. In addition, specific design ideas for these four MOF-based composites are presented. Some of them involve in situ synthesis method, solvothermal method, etc. The specific properties and applications of these materials are also mentioned. Finally, a brief summary of the advantages of these four types of MOF composites is given. Hopefully, this article will help researchers in the design of MOF composite structures.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed from organic linkers and inorganic building blocks, are well-known for their high crystallinity, high surface areas, and high component tunability. The stability of MOFs is a key prerequisite for their potential practical applications in areas including storage, separation, catalysis, and biomedicine since it is essential to guarantee the framework integrity during utilization. However, MOFs are prone to destruction under external stimuli, considerably hampering their commercialization. In this Review, we provide an overview of the situations where MOFs undergo destruction due to external stimuli such as chemical, thermal, photolytic, radiolytic, electronic, and mechanical factors and offer guidelines to avoid unwanted degradation happened to the framework. Furthermore, we discuss possible destruction mechanisms and their varying derived products. In particular, we highlight cases that utilize MOF instability to fabricate varying materials including hierarchically porous MOFs, monolayer MOF nanosheets, amorphous MOF liquids and glasses, polymers, metal nanoparticles, metal carbide nanoparticles, and carbon materials. Finally, we provide a perspective on the utilization of MOF destruction to develop advanced materials with a superior hierarchy for various applications.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Although the tailored metal active sites and porous architectures of MOFs hold great promise for engineering challenges ranging from gas separations to catalysis, a lack of understanding of how to improve their stability limits their use in practice. To overcome this limitation, we extract thousands of published reports of the key aspects of MOF stability necessary for their practical application: the ability to withstand high temperatures without degrading and the capacity to be activated by removal of solvent molecules. From nearly 4000 manuscripts, we use natural language processing and image analysis to obtain over 2000 solvent-removal stability measures and 3000 thermal degradation temperatures. We analyze the relationships between stability properties and the chemical and geometric structures in this set to identify limits of prior heuristics derived from smaller sets of MOFs. By training predictive machine learning (ML, i.e., Gaussian process and artificial neural network) models to encode the structure-property relationships with graph- and pore-structure-based representations, we are able to make predictions of stability orders of magnitude faster than conventional physics-based modeling or experiment. Interpretation of important features in ML models provides insights that we use to identify strategies to engineer increased stability into typically unstable 3d-transition-metal-containing MOFs that are frequently targeted for catalytic applications. We expect our approach to accelerate the time to discovery of stable, practical MOF materials for a wide range of applications.
