Abstract:Rumor discourse has been conceptualized as an attempt to reduce anxiety and uncertainty via a process of social sensemaking. Fourteen rumors transmitted on various Internet discussion groups were observed and content analyzed over the life of each rumor. With this (previously unavailable) more ecologically robust methodology, the intertwined threads of sensemaking and the gaining of interpretive control are clearly evident in the tapestry of rumor discourse. We propose a categorization of statements (the Rumor Interaction Analysis System) and find differences between dread rumors and wish rumors in anxiety-related content categories. Cluster analysis of these statements reveals a typology of voices (“communicative postures”) exhibiting sensemaking activities of the rumor discussion group, such as hypothesizing, skeptical critique, directing of activities to gain information, and presentation of evidence. These findings enrich our understanding of the long-implicated sensemaking function of rumor by clarifying the elements of communication that operate in rumor's social context.

Abstract:The openness characteristic of social networks facilitates the rapid spread of rumors, necessitating effective methods for detecting and managing the abundance of rumors on social media. Existing studies have primarily focused on improving the accuracy of rumor detection, but often overlook the vital aspects of interpretability and explanation of rumor patterns, limiting their credibility and real-world usability. Additionally, previous works have typically examined only a subset of user features, content, and spreading structure, neglecting the analysis of compound rules. To address these limitations, we propose a novel framework for detecting rumor patterns that emphasize comprehensive feature construction and the explanation of compound rules. Our framework incorporates multi-dimensional features, including user characteristics, post content, and the structure of information propagation. Advanced techniques, including large language models (such as ChatGPT) and graph motif discovery algorithms, are employed for feature construction. By leveraging diverse features, crucial integrated rules identified by Rulefit can investigate the contextually dependent associations among various interrelated rumor factors. We consolidate and analyze seven distinct rumor patterns based on the Credible Early Detection Dataset, deriving valuable insights into the inherent characteristics of rumors. The recognition of rumor patterns empowers social media platforms and fact-checking organizations to develop targeted and explainable interventions that effectively mitigate the spread of rumors and safeguard the integrity of information. These interventions greatly enhance the transparency and trustworthiness of rumor management, fostering a more reliable information ecosystem.

Abstract:Rumor is a typical social public opinion phenomenon. With the advent of the internet era, the intensity and breadth of internet rumors have increased, resulting in more profound and prominent impacts on society. Current research on internet rumors mainly involves theoretical analysis, but lacks a clear, common theoretical perspective. The social psychology communication perspective is precisely the perspective that studies how social information is disseminated, how individuals and groups in society perceive information dissemination, and how individuals and groups in society respond to information dissemination. This study argues that the social psychology communication perspective is an important theoretical perspective for analyzing the phenomenon of internet rumors. This study suggests that mechanisms such as diffusion of responsibility, cognitive closure, thinking patterns, self-serving bias, and emotional contagion contribute to the continuous generation and rapid spread of internet rumors. This paper also proposes countermeasures and suggestions for governing internet rumors from the perspectives of multiple social entities such as media and regulatory agencies.

Most academic research on online rumors has approached the issue from a quantitative modeling perspective. Less attention has been paid to the psychological mechanisms accounting for online rumor transmission behavior on the individual level. Drawing from the theory of stimulus–organism–response, this study aims to explore the nature of online rumors and investigate how the informational characteristics of online rumors are processed through the mediation of psychological variables to promote online rumor forwarding.Design/methodology/approachAn experimental approach to this issue was taken; the researchers investigated how the informational characteristics of online rumors and the psychological mediators promote online rumor transmission.FindingsFour information characteristics (sense-making, funniness, dreadfulness and personal relevance) and three psychological motivators (fact-finding, relationship enhancement and self-enhancement) promote online rumor-forwarding behavior.Originality/valueBecause any online rumor transmitted on social media can go viral, companies may eventually encounter social media-driven crises. Thus, understanding what drives rumor-forwarding behavior can help marketers mitigate and counter online rumors.

Abstract:The social network is a main tunnel of rumor spreading. Previous studies concentrated on a static rumor spreading. The content of the rumor is invariable during the whole spreading process. Indeed, the rumor evolves constantly in its spreading process, which grows shorter, more concise, more easily grasped, and told. In an early psychological experiment, researchers found about 70% of details in a rumor were lost in the first six mouth-to-mouth transmissions. Based on these observations, we investigate rumor spreading on social networks, where the content of the rumor is modified by the individuals with a certain probability. In the scenario, they have two choices, to forward or to modify. As a forwarder, an individual disseminates the rumor directly to their neighbors. As a modifier, conversely, an individual revises the rumor before spreading it out. When the rumor spreads on the social networks, for instance, scale-free networks and small-world networks, the majority of individuals actually are infected by the multirevised version of the rumor, if the modifiers dominate the networks. The individuals with more social connections have a higher probability to receive the original rumor. Our observation indicates that the original rumor may lose its influence in the spreading process. Similarly, a true information may turn out to be a rumor as well. Our result suggests the rumor evolution should not be a negligible question, which may provide a better understanding of the generation and destruction of a rumor.

Abstract:Randomized rumor spreading processes diffuse information on an undirected graph and have been widely studied. In this work, we present a generic framework for analyzing a broad class of such processes on regular graphs. Our analysis is protocol-agnostic, as it only requires the expected proportion of newly informed vertices in each round to be bounded, and a natural negative correlation property. This framework allows us to analyze various protocols, including PUSH, PULL, and PUSH-PULL, thereby extending prior research. Unlike previous work, our framework accommodates message failures at any time $t\geq 0$ with a probability of $1-q(t)$, where the credibility $q(t)$ is any function of time. This enables us to model real-world scenarios in which the transmissibility of rumors may fluctuate, as seen in the spread of ``fake news'' and viruses. Additionally, our framework is sufficiently broad to cover dynamic graphs.

Abstract:The pervasive reach of the Internet has revolutionized information access and transmission, which has contributed to the widespread dissemination of rumors on social media. This study explored the impact of real-world integrated counter-rumor features, specifically community notes (which provide context and additional information from the online community) and related articles (which link to verified news sources that address the rumor), on online users' intentions to believe and spread rumor tweets on social media. Additionally, we investigated how these features mitigate online users' intentions to believe and spread different types of rumor messages, including wish and dread rumors. After conducting an experimental study with 201 online users on social media, we found that the presence of integrated counter-rumor features in rumor tweets can reduce online users' intentions to believe and spread rumors, regardless of the specific feature used. While we observed no significant differences between the effects of community notes and related articles on overall online users' intentions, a nuanced pattern emerged when we considered wish and dread rumors. Specifically, community notes proved more effective at reducing online users' intentions to believe and spread wish-related rumors due to the diverse perspectives and opinions within the online community. By contrast, related articles were found to have greater efficacy at mitigating online users' intentions to believe and spread dread rumors, as they can provide more concrete information to alleviate any associated fear or anxiety. Our findings contribute theoretical and practical insights for effectively countering the spread of rumor tweets on social media platforms.

Abstract:The emergence of social network sites (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube etc.) has been playing an important role for modern people’s lives. The social network sites provide users online maintaining and expanding interpersonal space and opportunities. Many social network sites have been a platform to share the news and information with friends and family. The social network sites facilitate the information flow through user’s friend circle, so various information spreads quickly and so does rumor. This study adopts the theoretical perspective of an Elaboration Likelihood Model to identify the informative and normative factors that influence the credibility judgment of online rumors in social network sites context. Based on the 335 valid samples from the online questionnaire, statistical testing of research models using partial least squares. The results of this study are similar to the ELM claim that argument quality and source credibility have significant effects on rumor credibility. This indicates that rumor spreading of SNSs is based not only on the argument quality, but also on the source credibility. Moreover, compared with argument quality, the source credibility has a stronger impact on rumor credibility. This means that the degree to which the user needs source credibility plays a major key role to decide the rumor credibility. The study also suggests the possible importance of argument quality and source credibility of rumor. Specifically, we identified three components of argument quality and four components of source credibility.

Sharing or Not: Psychological Motivations of Brand Rumors Spread and the Stop Solutions

Abstract:Brand rumors can harm brands’ image and bring significant impacts on customers’ decision-making and sharing behavior. Finding practical strategies for preventing the spread of brand rumors continues to be a challenge. Building on the social contagion theory, the current research enriches the discussion on understanding why people spread rumors and how to deal with the spreading of rumors. Sharing brand rumors is motivated by a variety of complex psychological reasons, but prior research didn’t adequately analyze the problem from a complexity perspective. Therefore, using a sample of 416 interviewers within eight types of brand rumors, this study employs fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to investigate the combination of rumor psychological communication motivations in brand activities and solutions to prevent the spread of brand rumors. The current study discoveries three and two first-level configurational solutions, respectively, that can promote positive and negative rumor spreading. To summarize, emotional stimulation is a key component in the spread of rumors; altruism and relationship management motivation can coexist at times; and untrusted rumors are disseminated through other motivation factors. Solutions to prevent rumors from spreading are also provided. Furthermore, the findings help to understand the psychology of configurational motivation and how it can help brands reduce the spread of brand rumors. Finally, these discoveries’ theoretical contributions and practical implications are presented.

Abstract:Marked by repetitive and negatively valenced disclosures, verbal rumination is a common strategy used to cope with challenges or manage complex situations that often have detrimental consequences for individuals and the organizations to which they belong. To investigate factors that might encourage or inhibit verbal rumination in organizations, the present study examined the quality of coworker and supervisor communication and perceived stress in workplace settings. Results revealed the interconnected nature of workplace relationships in terms of encouraging or inhibiting verbal rumination. These findings also emphasized the importance of relationships with supervisors as a deterrent to verbal rumination and reinforced the strong connection between stress and rumination, offering important implications for theoretical work related to interpersonal communication in organizations.
Is Positive Always Positive? the Effects of Precrisis Media Coverage on Rumor Refutation Effectiveness in Social Media.

Abstract:While providing an unparalleled platform to enable consumers to share information easily with others, social media also threatens organizational control of information and increases risk when organizations become the focus of harmful rumors. Denials, or statements refuting rumors, are able to reduce consumers' belief in and intention to share rumors. However, the evidence of their effectiveness is not uniformly supportive. Although scholars have highlighted the importance of identifying the moderators for rumor refutation effectiveness, media, as one of the essential infomediaries to shape consumers' perceptions about firms, was largely overlooked in literatures. This study, therefore, explores the extent to which effective rumor refutation is a function of precrisis media coverage. Drawing on the literature in expectancy violation and media influences on social perceptions, we assessed the influence of precrisis media coverage on rumor refutation effectiveness in a scenario-based experiment. The findings suggest that the tenor of media coverage moderates the relationship between the quality of refutation arguments and refutation effectiveness. When the media coverage is positive, high-quality refutation arguments will not result in significant lower levels of belief in, and intentions to share, the rumor than low-quality arguments. This study contributes a clearer understanding of rumor refutation effectiveness, as well as furnishing important insights regarding the value of media coverage and reputation.

Abstract:This study tested the manner in which attitude toward an object of rumor affects people's epistemic motivation to solve a problem and to share a rumor, specifically on social media, using two rumors regarding food safety issues including McDonald's and genetically modified food. An online survey administered to 184 undergraduate students who use Twitter showed that negative attitudes increased the likelihood of rumor sharing, mediated by issue-related epistemic motivation. However, positive attitudes showed no effects on issue-related motivation and the likelihood of rumor sharing. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

The transmission of rumor and gossip is an enduring feature of power dynamics in any small or large group, as both a way of trying to make sense of ambiguous situations and as a form of social control. This article examines the construction, maintenance, proliferation, and management of rumors, gossip, and hearsay from a psychoanalytic perspective.

Abstract:Rumor spreading is a ubiquitous phenomenon in social and technological networks. Traditional models consider that the rumor is propagated by pairwise interactions between spreaders and ignorants. Spreaders can become stiflers only after contacting spreaders or stiflers. Here we propose a model that considers the traditional assumptions, but stiflers are active and try to scotch the rumor to the spreaders. An analytical treatment based on the theory of convergence of density dependent Markov chains is developed to analyze how the final proportion of ignorants behaves asymptotically in a finite homogeneously mixing population. We perform Monte Carlo simulations in random graphs and scale-free networks and verify that the results obtained for homogeneously mixing populations can be approximated for random graphs, but are not suitable for scale-free networks. Furthermore, regarding the process on a heterogeneous mixing population, we obtain a set of differential equations that describes the time evolution of the probability that an individual is in each state. Our model can be applied to study systems in which informed agents try to stop the rumor propagation. In addition, our results can be considered to develop optimal information dissemination strategies and approaches to control rumor propagation.

Abstract:SAGE Open, Volume 13, Issue 4, October-December 2023. With the rapid development of social media, new opportunities have been provided for the generation and dissemination of online rumors, making systematic study of rumor detection of great significance for the control and governance of internet rumors. Addressing the limitations of past review studies on rumor detection which were characterized by a single perspective, reliance on subjective judgment, and lack of technological evolution theory, this paper reviews 983 rumor detection articles in the SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, CPCI-S, CPCI-SSH, CCR-EXPANDED, and IC databases of the Web of Science. Utilizing Citespace and VOSviewer for visual analysis of the articles, and adopting bibliometric theories like network analysis and topic evolution analysis, this study identifies core research groups in the field of rumor detection based on author collaboration network and institution collaboration network. Through high-frequency keyword clustering graph and keyword co-occurrence graph, the study unveils topic associations and cluster structures among keywords, explicates research hotspots in the field of rumor detection, and conducts a fine-grained critical comparative analysis. According to keyword time graph, keyword bursts table, and trends in the number of publications in hot technology fields, combined with the S-curve technology evolution theory, the study discerns the life cycle and research trends of technologies in the rumor detection field. Compared to existing literature reviews, this paper is the first to propose integrating bibliometrics and S-curve technology evolution theory to reveal the state of relevant technologies and research frontiers.Plain Language SummaryA Review and Analysis of Rumor Detection ResearchThere are many rumors on social media, which can mislead the public and disrupt the social order. How to detect rumors is an important research problem. Rumor detection can help control the spread and diffusion of rumors, and reduce their negative impact on the public and society. This article reviews and analyzes the research on rumor detection, using a combination of bibliometrics and S-curve technology evolution theory, and summarizes the research status, hotspots and trends of rumor detection. It finds that the research on rumor detection mainly has five aspects: rumor detection based on machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, multimodal fusion and trust network. These aspects have their own advantages, challenges and improvements. The technologies used are in different stages of maturity and have different development potentials. The most promising ones are multimodal fusion and trust network, which can extract more rich and effective rumor features, and enhance the effect and credibility of rumor detection. This article provides a new perspective and method for the research on rumor detection, and helps researchers better understand and predict the technical status and research frontier of rumor detection.

Abstract:Co-rumination is associated with positive friendship quality (thought to buffer against anxiety and depression) but paradoxically higher levels of anxiety and depression. With the increasing use of technology for communication among adults, there is little known about co-rumination effects across different modalities of communication. In the current study, we examined co-rumination through four methods (i.e. in person, phone calls, text messaging, and social media) in two separate samples - college students and participants from the community. Classic co-rumination effects were found for in-person communications, and we found that co-rumination by telephone as well as by texting, for a college student sample only, mirrors some of these findings for in-person co-rumination. In studies of co-rumination, evaluation of multiple modes of communication is warranted.

Abstract:We study a rumor spreading model where individuals are connected via a network structure. Initially, only a small subset of the individuals are spreading a rumor. Each individual who is connected to a spreader, starts spreading the rumor with some probability as a function of their trust in the spreader, quantified by the Jaccard similarity index. Furthermore, the probability that a spreader diffuses the rumor decreases over time until they fully lose their interest and stop spreading. We focus on determining the graph parameters which govern the magnitude and pace that the rumor spreads in this model. We prove that for the rumor to spread to a sizable fraction of the individuals, the network needs to enjoy ``strong'' expansion properties and most nodes should be in ``well-connected'' communities. Both of these characteristics are, arguably, present in real-world social networks up to a certain degree, shedding light on the driving force behind the extremely fast spread of rumors in social networks. Furthermore, we formulate a large range of countermeasures to cease the spread of a rumor. We introduce four fundamental criteria which a countermeasure ideally should possess. We evaluate all the proposed countermeasures by conducting experiments on real-world social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. We conclude that our novel decentralized countermeasures (which are executed by the individuals) generally outperform the previously studied centralized ones (which need to be imposed by a third entity such as the government).
