Abstract:Our concern in this paper is the dimension and inclusion relations of Schubert varieties in twisted partial affine flag varieties. In the end we apply our results to some local models of certain Shimura varieties.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to clarify the connection between certain structures from the theory of totally nonnegative Grassmannians, quiver Grassmannians for cyclic quivers and the theory of local models of Shimura varieties. More precisely, we generalize the construction from our previous paper relating the combinatorics and geometry of quiver Grassmannians to that of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. The varieties we are interested in serve as realizations of local models of Shimura varieties. We exploit quiver representation techniques to study the quiver Grassmannians of interest and, in particular, to describe explicitly embeddings into affine flag varieties which allow us to realize our quiver Grassmannians as a union of Schubert varieties therein.

Abstract:Abstract We exhibit basic algebro-geometric results on the formal model of semi-infinite flag varieties and its Schubert varieties over an algebraically closed field ${\mathbb K}$ of characteristic $\neq 2$ from scratch. We show that the formal model of a semi-infinite flag variety admits a unique nice (ind-)scheme structure, its projective coordinate ring has a $\mathbb {Z}$ -model and it admits a Frobenius splitting compatible with the boundaries and opposite cells in positive characteristic. This establishes the normality of the Schubert varieties of the quasi-map space with a fixed degree (instead of their limits proved in [K, Math. Ann. 371 no.2 (2018)]) when $\mathsf {char}\, {\mathbb K} =0$ or $\gg 0$ , and the higher-cohomology vanishing of their nef line bundles in arbitrary characteristic $\neq 2$ . Some particular cases of these results play crucial roles in our proof [47] of a conjecture by Lam, Li, Mihalcea and Shimozono [60] that describes an isomorphism between affine and quantum K -groups of a flag manifold.

Abstract:We study a family of subvarieties of the flag variety defined by certain linear conditions, called Hessenberg varieties. We compare them to Schubert varieties. We prove that some Schubert varieties can be realized as Hessenberg varieties and vice versa. Our proof explicitly identifies these Schubert varieties by their permutation and computes their dimension. We use this to answer an open question by proving that Hessenberg varieties are not always pure dimensional. We give examples that neither semisimple nor nilpotent Hessenberg varieties need be pure; the latter are connected, non-pure-dimensional Hessenberg varieties. Our methods require us to generalize the definition of Hessenberg varieties.

Abstract:We study the effect of Feigin's flat degeneration of the type flag variety on the defining ideals of its Schubert varieties. In particular, we describe two classes of Schubert varieties which stay irreducible under the degenerations and in several cases we are able to encode reducibility of the degenerations in terms of symmetric group combinatorics. As a side result, we obtain an identification of some degenerate Schubert varieties (i.e. the vanishing sets of initial ideals of the ideals of Schubert varieties with respect to Feigin's Gröbner degeneration) with Richardson varieties in higher rank partial flag varieties.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a parahoric Bruhat-Tits group schemes arising from a $\Gamma$-curve $C$ and a certain $\Gamma$-action on a simple algebraic group $G$ for some finite cyclic group $\Gamma$. We prove the flatness of Beilinson-Drinfeld Schubert varieties of $\mathcal{G}$, we determine the rigidified Picard group of the Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannian ${\rm Gr}_{\mathcal{G},C^n}$ of $\mathcal{G}$, and we establish the factorizable and equivariant structures on rigidified line bundles on ${\rm Gr}_{\mathcal{G},C^n}$. We develop an algebraic theory of global Demazure modules of twisted current algebras, and using our geometric results we prove that when $C = \mathbb{A}^1$, the spaces of global sections of line bundles on BD Schubert varieties of $\mathcal{G}$ are dual to the twisted global Demazure modules. This generalizes the work of Dumanski-Feigin-Finkelberg in the untwisted setting,

Abstract:This paper studies the singularities of affine Schubert varieties in the affine Grassmannian (of type $\mathrm{A}^{(1)}_\ell$). For two classes of affine Schubert varieties, we determine the singular loci; and for one class, we also determine explicitly the tangent spaces at singular points. For a general affine Schubert variety, we give partial results on the singular locus.

Abstract:We generalize the classification of isomorphism classes of Schubert varieties from complete flag varieties G/B to a class of partial flag varieties G/P. Abstract:The quantum double Schubert polynomials studied by Kirillov and Maeno, and by Ciocan-Fontanine and Fulton, are shown to represent Schubert classes in Kim's presentation of the equivariant quantum cohomology of the flag variety. We define parabolic analogues of quantum double Schubert polynomials, and show that they represent Schubert classes in the equivariant quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties. For complete flags Anderson and Chen have announced a proof with different methods.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with local cohomology sheaves on generalized flag varieties supported in closed Schubert varieties, which carry natural structures as (mixed Hodge) D-modules. We employ Kazhdan--Lusztig theory and Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules to describe a general strategy to calculate the simple composition factors, Hodge filtration, and weight filtration on these modules. Our main tool is the Grothendieck--Cousin complex, introduced by Kempf, which allows us to relate the local cohomology modules in question to parabolic Verma modules over the corresponding Lie algebra. We show that this complex underlies a complex of mixed Hodge modules, and is thus endowed with Hodge and weight filtrations. As a consequence, strictness implies that computing cohomology commutes with taking associated graded with respect to both of these filtrations. We execute this strategy to calculate the composition factors and weight filtration for Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian, in particular showing that the weight filtration is controlled by the augmented Dyck patterns of Raicu--Weyman. As an application, upon restriction to the opposite big cell, we recover the simple composition factors and weight filtration on local cohomology with support in generic determinantal varieties.

Abstract:We prove that Schubert varieties in flag manifolds are uniquely determined by their equivariant cohomology classes, as well as a stronger result that replaces Schubert varieties with closures of Bialynicki-Birula cells under suitable conditions. This is used to prove that any two-pointed curve neighborhood representing a quantum cohomology product with a Seidel class is a Schubert variety.

Abstract:We construct local models of Shimura varieties and investigate their singularities, with special emphasis on wildly ramified cases. More precisely, with the exception of odd unitary groups in residue characteristic $2$ we construct local models, show reducedness of their special fiber, Cohen$-$Macaulayness and in equi-characteristic also (pseudo-)rationality. In mixed characteristic we conjecture their (pseudo-)rationality. This is based on the construction of parahoric group schemes over two-dimensional bases for wildly ramified groups and an analysis of singularities of the attached Schubert varieties in positive characteristic using perfect geometry.

Abstract:Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements, also known as matroid Schubert varieties, play an essential role in the proof of the Dowling-Wilson conjecture and in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory for matroids. We study these varieties as equivariant compactifications of affine spaces, and give necessary and sufficient conditions to characterize them. We also generalize the theory to include partial compactifications and morphisms between them. Our results resemble the correspondence between toric varieties and polyhedral fans.

Abstract:This paper investigates the geometry of regular Hessenberg varieties associated with the minimal indecomposable Hessenberg space in the flag variety of a complex reductive group. These varieties form a flat family of irreducible subvarieties of the flag variety, encompassing notable examples such as the Peterson variety and toric varieties linked to Weyl chambers. Our first main result computes the closures of affine cells that pave these varieties explicitly, establishing a correspondence between Hessenberg--Schubert varieties and regular Hessenberg varieties in smaller dimensional flag varieties. We also analyze the singular locus of these varieties, proving that all regular Hessenberg varieties are singular outside of the toric case. Specifically, we extend previous results on the singular locus of the Peterson variety to all Lie types. Additionally, we provide detailed descriptions of Hessenberg--Schubert variety inclusion relations, a combinatorial characterization of smooth Hessenberg--Schubert varieties, and simple formulas for their $K$-theory and cohomology classes. The paper also includes a classification of all singular permutation flags in each regular Hessenberg variety in type A, linking them to combinatorial patterns, and generalizes these findings using root-theoretic data to all Lie types.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the multi-rigidity problem in rational homogeneous spaces. A Schubert class is called multi-rigid if every multiple of it can only be represented by a union of Schubert varieties. We prove the multi-rigidity of Schubert classes in rational homogeneous spaces. In particular, we characterize the multi-rigid Schubert classes in partial flag varieties of type A, B and D. Moreover, for a general rational homogeneous space $G/P$, we deduce the rigidity and multi-rigidity from the corresponding generalized Grassmannians (correspond to maximal parabolics). When $G$ is semi-simple, we also deduce the rigidity and multi-rigidity from the simple cases.

Orbit structures and complexity in Schubert and Richardson Varieties

Abstract:The goal of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we provide a type-uniform formula for the torus complexity of the usual torus action on a Richardson variety, by developing the notion of algebraic dimensions of Bruhat intervals, strengthening a type $A$ result by Donten-Bury, Escobar and Portakal. In the process, we give an explicit description of the torus action on any Deodhar component as well as describe the root subgroups that comprise the component. Secondly, when a Levi subgroup in a reductive algebraic group acts on a Schubert variety, we exhibit a codimension preserving bijection between the Levi-Borel subgroup (a Borel subgroup in the Levi subgroup) orbits in the big open cell of that Schubert variety and torus orbits in the big open cell of a distinguished Schubert subvariety. This bijection has many applications including a type-uniform formula for the Levi-Borel complexity of the usual Levi-Borel subgroup action on a Schubert variety. We conclude by extending the Levi-Borel complexity results to a large class of Schubert varieties in the partial flag variety.
