Abstract:Slang is a language that is often used in society. The use of this variety of languages shows that there is a fairly good closeness between the speakers in communication. In this research, it is expected to find out how the description of the use of language, especially the existence of Slang. This study applied the Content Analysis technique. The qualitative descriptive approach is used as the research methodology in this study. This is due to the fact that the researcher analyzed the data descriptively and the conclusion was offered in the form of an explanation of words. From the study, it found that the translator tent to use equivalent words that have similarities in meaning between ST and TT, so it guides the audience easily understood the meaning of Slang words. The translator also tends to use â€ ̃softened wordâ€TM in TT in order to avoid the vulgarity and rudeness of ST. In contrast, it also found that the translator did some mistakes in translating slang from ST. This mistake can be avoided by the translator by knowing the cultural background of the slang word first, then looking for relevancy between utterance and context, and last the translator need to pick up the equivalent word in TT that has a similar meaning to the slang word in ST.

Abstract:This research is about the analysis of the American teenagers’ slang translation strategies in Easy A movie subtitles based on Gottlieb’s theory. Translation is seen as important aspect in helping the target communicant understand the content and messages of the utterance. Besides, slangs, though hardly ever discussed in classroom setting, are commonly used in social context, and in movies. Easy A is a movie talking about school life which is close to students’ daily activities. This research aims to know the English slangs appeared in Easy A movie, the strategies the translator uses in translating his or her subtitles of the slang expressions from the English language as the source language (SL) to the Indonesian language as the target language (TL), and the most strategies used.. In this study, the researcher uses a qualitative method to analyse the data. The slang expressions are analysed by selecting and marking the utterances and text containing slang expressions. To support the research, the researcher uses some online dictionaries to determine if the slang is originally from America and to find each slang meaning. The result of this research shows, there are seven strategies used by the translator or subtitle in translating slang expressions: Expansion, Paraphrase, Transfer, Imitation, Condensation, Decimation, and Deletion. Three strategies are not found. They are Transcription, Dislocation, and Resignation strategy. Based on this result, the most often used by the translator is Transfer strategy. It is because the translator translated every slang expression completely. Paraphrase strategy is in second place. It indicates that the translator attempts to make the slang expressions easier to be understood by the audience.

Abstract:A mistake in translating a single word may cause thousands of deaths. An unimaginable fact that mistranslation cost 80.000 lives in Japan in August 1945 proves that translating a text should be taken into consideration and done carefully. Translating a source language (SL) into a target language (TL) is problematic and not as simple as only transposing SL into TL because this activity closely relates to different cultures. Therefore, this study is aimed at analyzing the translation techniques in the English subtitle of the movie “Ketika Cinta Bertasbih 1”. This qualitative study focuses on Molina and Albir’s translation techniques used in the English movie subtitle. The primary data were collected from the dialogs and the English subtitle and selected based on the translation problems. Furthermore, the data were analyzed and interpreted descriptively to identify and explain why and how the translation techniques are used in the English subtitle. This study found that five translation techniques were used to translate the dialogs in bahasa Indonesia (SL) into English subtitle (TL). In the subtitle, this study found the use of adaptation (10 times), transposition (9 times), borrowing (7 times), generalization (3 times) and compensation (once). Those techniques were applied to solve problems in translation, such as cultural differences, in equivalence, untranslatability, and grammatical differences. This study concludes that the techniques proposed by Molina and Albir in 2002 have been a great contribution in the field of translation. The cultural problems which lead to in equivalence and untranslatability, as well as grammatical differences are no longer problematic to translators.

Abstract:This study was focused on determine the types of use slang language style. The types of slangs were analyzed from “Charlie’s Angels” movie. Theories used in this research were Sumarsono (2007) about the types of slang language style and Zhou & Fan (2013) about the functions of slang language. This study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method.This research is the kind of content analysis study based on the way to do qualitative research. The way to collects the data are; downloading movie, watching movie and downloading movie subtitle. The data were from a movie entitled “Charlie’s Angels” in the year of 2019 with action-comedy genre.After conducting the analysis, this study showed that there were four types of slang language style from six types of slang language. They were clipping, creative, uses the existing words and metaphor. Creative was found as the most dominant types of slang language style in the movie with 10 data (40%), metaphor with 7 data (28%), uses the existing words with 5 data (20%) and clipping with 3 data (12%). Finally, the reseacher hopes that this study will be useful for the future improvement of studying literature, especially about slang language style

Abstract:This research was conducted to analysis the translation techniques and quality of types on expressive speech acts exploited by Pi, the main character in the film “Life of PI”. The research used the Pragmatics approach with speech act as the field of study. It was a descriptive qualitative research and it employed purposive sampling as the sampling technique. The data in this research were the types of expressive speech acts. From the result of data analysis, there are four types of expressive speech acts employed by Pi character in the film “Life of PI”, they are thanking, apologizing, blaming and praising. From the analysis, the first finding of the research shows that the total data of research are 24 data. There are four expressive, thanking expressive speech act 7 data, apologizing speech act 10 data, blaming 3 data, and praising 4 data. The second finding of the research shows that there are two techniques employed by the translator in translating expressive speech act in the film “Life of Pi”. They are literal translation 19 data and explicit translation 5 data. The third finding dealing with the quality of translation, the translation of expressive speech act in the subtitle film “Life of Pi” belongs to accurate and acceptable and readable translation. For the accuracy of the translation, from 24 data, 19 data are accurately translated, 5 data are less accurately translated. For the acceptability of the translation, from 24 data, 21 data are acceptably translated, 3 data are less acceptably translated. For the readability, all the 24 data are readable.

Abstract:Abstract: This study investigated the intricate process of translating thoughts and ideas between different languages, which goes beyond mere linguistic proficiency. Successful translation requires a deep comprehension of cultural nuances in both the source and target languages, as well as a thorough understanding of the text and the intended audience. The aim is to achieve accurate and effective translations while avoiding literal interpretations, potential misunderstandings, and inaccuracies. The focus of this study is the specific translation techniques employed in subtitling the renowned film "Avatar." To conduct this research, a qualitative approach using descriptive methods is adopted, utilizing dialogue and subtitles from the movie as the primary data source. The analysis involves the identification of translation techniques based on Newmark's framework (1988) and references Larson's classification of translation types (1945). Through this study, a comprehensive exploration of the diverse translation techniques used in subtitling "Avatar" is undertaken. The findings emphasize the significance of cultural knowledge in achieving successful translations. It is encouraged that future research delves into other films to gain a broader understanding of subtitle translation, encompassing various translation methods, procedures, and other pertinent aspects of translation.
ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS IN MOVIE SUBTITLING : THE ACCURACY OF THEIR PRAGMATIC TRANSLATION

Abstract:Translation plays a number of important roles in constructing and understanding about foreign or unknown products of linguistic world such as books, articles, and any other literary works. In translating literary works, translators should consider several things, including one of the micro aspects of pragmatics: speech act. Due to the importance of pragmatic meanings, accuracy in pragmatic translation is obligatory. The present study aims at describing the types of illocutionary acts in the movie subtitle of “The Hunger Games” and examining the accuracy of their pragmatic translation. The data of the study were subtitles in the Hunger Games movie. They were collected through documentation method and analyzed through content analysis. The result shows that six types of illocutionary acts of the source language (English) were translated similarly into the target language (Bahasa Indonesia) including: assertive, directive, commissive, representative, declarative and, expressive acts. Regarding the accuracy of their translation, the present study found that most of the data or 95% were rated as accurate, 4% of the data were less accurate, and 0.9% data were judged as inaccurate.

Abstract:Cultural differences make translators censor some parts that considered as taboo, abusive, and inappropriate in the culture of the target language. Censorship carried out by deleting and reducing words, phrases, or sentences in subtitles. The aims of this research are finding words, phrases, and sentences that censored, factors causing censorship and the impact of censorship on the quality of translation. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research method with a fixed case study form. The result shows that censorship was carried out by translators because of two main causes, namely self-censorship and translator's capacity. The results also showed that most of the data was censor because of self-censorship. The translators choose to delete or reduce because of four things, namely swearing words, emphasized, sexual references, and repetitions. Meanwhile, the impact of censorship on the quality of translation shows that most of the data is inaccurate, acceptable, and has high legibility.

Abstract:The objective of this research is to analyze the translation of idiomatic expression in the movie titled The Perfect Date. The aims of the research are: (1) to find out what types of strategies applied in translating idiomatic expression from English to Indonesian in the subtitle of The Perfect Date movie, and (2) to find out what types of meaning equivalence found in the translation of idiomatic expression in The Perfect Date movie. Moreover, the researcher applied content analysis method using theories by Krippendorff to conduct the analysis. To answer the first problem in the formulated question, the researcher used theory from Mona Baker. The study found that 30 expressions are commonly used in The Perfect Date movie. The findings of the study are divided into four categories based on idiom translation strategies. The result shows there are 4 idioms translated using similar meaning and form, 1 idioms translated using similar meaning but dissimilar form, 24 idioms translated using translation by paraphrase, and 1 idiom translated using translation by omission. Translation by paraphrase is the most frequently used of translation strategies in the movie. To answer the second problem in the formulated question, the researcher used theory from Eugene A. Nida. The 30 idiomatic expressions are classified into two types of meaning equivalence. There are 4 idioms classified using formal equivalence and 26 idioms classified using dynamic equivalence. However, dynamic equivalence is the most frequently used of meaning equivalence in the movie.

Abstract:This study aims to identify the types of slang words and the translation strategies used to translate the slang words in Venom: Let There Be Carnage movie. Data collected by referring to the official movie transcripts in English and their translations in Indonesian, especially those that have been classified as slang words. To classify the slang, the researcher used the theory of types of slang by Allan and Burridge (2006), while the analysis process used the theory of translation strategies proposed by Baker (1992). The study found four out of five types of slang words, and the type “fresh and creative” mostly appeared with 17 data. It is followed by flippant which occurred 15 times, imitative 9 times, and clipping 4 times. Furthermore, the study also found seven out of eight translation strategies to translate the slang, and the most frequently used strategy is translation by a more general word which constitutes 46.6% of the total data. Meanwhile, the translation by illustration is not used. And the least strategy used to translate the slang words is translation using loan word or loan word with explanation with a total of 2.2%. Based on the findings, fresh and creative slang appears most frequently due to the casual atmosphere of the scenes, while acronyms are absent as they are more suitable for written text. The general word strategy is common due to the abundance of general terms, whereas the illustration strategy is rarely used due to spatial constraints in presenting additional visuals in scenes. Hopefully, this study can provide practical insights for translating similar movies.

Abstract:Slang is an informal language as the outcome of the relationship between language and society. This study aims to analyze the types and the function of slang words in sociolinguistics view found in the 8 Mile movie. The theory used in this study is Wardhaugh (1986) and Alan & Burridge (2006). Classifying the slang words into five type and identifying the function into three function of slang words. The method used to conduct and collect data was descriptive qualitative method research, using observation and documentation methods. The analysis results from the study are consist of; the first of which is the types of slang words found consisting of fresh and creative slang words, clipping slang words, acronym slang words, flippant slang words, and imitative slang words. The second is function of slang words founded is consist of slang to initiate a conversation, slang to address person, slang to humiliate person. It can be concluded that the most type of slang found is clipping and function used to humiliate a person.

Abstract:An utterance to explain how speaker use language to accomplish intended actions and how the hearers infer intended meaning from what is said called as a speech acts. The study of speech act is very important for us because it can make us comprehend what message that discovered in every utterance. According to Austin (1962) suggests that in uttering a sentence, a speaker is generally involved in three level of speech acts, they are locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. Abstract:Chinese songs and movies have been popular in Indonesia and have been favored by Indonesians. Chinese movies, especially action movies, are very popular within Indonesians. There are still very few people who master Chinese in Indonesia, so Indonesian people are very rely on Indonesian subtitles when watching Chinese movies. The purpose of this study is to understand the translation strategies used in the subtitle and the problems that exist. This study analyzes the subtitle translation of main characters’ dialogue of the movies "Brotherhood of Blades", "Rise of the Legend", "The Assassin", "Bloody Destiny", "The Monkey King 2" and "My Beloved Bodyguard". According to the analysis, the most commonly used film subtitle translation strategy is paraphrase. The reason why paraphrase strategy is the most commonly used strategy is because the research object of this study (the dialogue of action films) mostly contains Chinese history, culture, and customs, so the translator must consider the most appropriate sentence to translate into the target language in order to let the meaning remain. In addition, the subtitle translation also needs to pay attention to word selection, conjunctive words, word order, polysemous meaning items, positive and negative form, plot and scene, cultural elements.

Abstract:The aims of the study are to find out and elaborate the swearwords based on different contexts in the Forest Gump movie’s subtitle and its translation. This is to answer the questions of translation technique used in the translated subtitle, and the speech acts used in the swear words. Descriptive qualitative method is used in this research to identify and to analyse the dialogue containing swearwords in the Forest Gump movie. From the analysis, it can be seen that the most used phrase of swearword is dominated by the phrase damn it or God damn it. The speech acts found were Assertive, Directive, Expressive, and Commissive. The Source Text had the total data of speech act about 63 (sixty-three) data of which 11 data were counted as two data (2). The data comprised of Assertive, Directive, Expressive and Commissive. The Target Text had the total amount data of speech act about 50 (fifty) data, 3 (three) of which were not translated and therefore cannot be counted. The Data comprises of Assertive, Directive, Expressive, and Commissive. It is expected that future researchers can study further and deeper about the speech acts in swear words and the translation techniques.
A PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF COMPLIMENT UTTERANCES ON LEGALLY BLONDE MOVIE AND ITS TRANSLATION

Abstract:This research is aimed at describing the variations of the language forms, describing the different expression between male and female, and describing the equivalence of the implicature pattern of compliment utterances on Legally Blonde movie and its translation. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation method. In analyzing the compliment utterances and its translation, the steps are: finding the variation of forms of utterances by applying language form theory, finding the differences in the way male and female expressing the compliment utterances by applying four types politeness strategy of Brown and Levinson, and describing the equivalences of the implicature by applying Grice theory. Having analyzed the data, the writer finds that the forms of compliment utterances and its translation are word is translated into word; noun phrase is translated into word; noun phrase is translated into noun phrase; noun phrase is translated into declarative sentence; simple declarative sentence is translated into word; simple declarative sentence is translated into adjective phrase; simple declarative sentence is translated into simple declarative sentence; negative declarative sentence is translated into negative declarative sentence; compound sentence us translated into compound sentence; compound sentence is translated into simple declarative sentence; interrogative sentence is translated into interrogative sentence; negative interrogative sentence is translated into declarative sentence; negative interrogative sentence is translated into negative interrogative sentence; and exclamatory sentence is translated into adjective phrase. In the case of politeness strategies the writer finds equivalence in bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record; and the non equivalence case the writer finds in negative politeness is translated into positive politeness. In the case of implicature the writer finds the equivalence in source language and target language are conventional implicature is translated into conventional implicature; conventional implicature is translated into conversational implicature; and conversational implicature is translated into conversational implicature.

Abstract:With the increasing influence of movies in the world, subtitle translation plays an indispensable role in appreciating them. Based on the theoretical framework of skopos theory, this article uses the subtitles of the film “Youth” and their translations as the corpus. The goal is to maximize the audience’s understanding of the source film lines. It combines interpretation, abbreviation, supplementary and substitution methods together. The different functions of film lines are employed to study subtitle translation. Analyzing the function of movie lines not only helps to clarify the intended functions of the translation, but also provides ideas for subtitle translation.

Abstract:The objective of this research is to analyze slang words in Top Five movie. Learning slang is important for people who want to fully understand English either it is formal or informal. The movie is analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through library and internet research then watch the movie several times. The first analysis of the research is about slang words that used in the movie. The second analysis is about forms of slang that found in the movie. Then the third analysis is about functions of slang words used in the movie. Abstract:Movies are carriers of culture and have become an indispensable means of cultural dissemination in today's society. The demand for subtitle translation is also constantly increasing. Subtitle translation in films is constrained by time, space, and culture; therefore, subtitles should be concise and easy to understand. This article analyzed and evaluated the subtitle translation of the Chinese film "Chang 'an" based on three rules of Skopos theory: skopos rules, intratextual coherence and fidelity rule. The translation purpose of the translator is to help the audience have a better viewing experience and accurately convey the information of Chinese subtitles through a concise English translation. When translating Chinese to English subtitles, translators should omit repetitive or plot-irrelevant information, add conjunctions to make the translation smooth and coherent and transform cultural differences.

Abstract:An American romantic comedy, Ticket to Paradise Movie, provides a unique context for investigating code-switching. It portrays a divorced couple collaborating to disrupt their daughter’s wedding in Bali. Beyond its entertaining storyline, the movie features a multilingual phenomenon, with characters utilizing the Balinese language for authenticity. This study aims to analyse the types and Reasons for Code-Switching. This study uses a qualitative approach. The primary data was collected from film transcripts and secondary data from literature reviews. The result of this study reveals the types and reasons for code-switching utterances in the Ticket to Paradise Movie. This study can contribute to broader language use comprehension in multilingual settings by exploring code-switching in this cinematic context.

Abstract:The object of research: This study is aimed to categorize the types of translation techniques and the most prevalent translation techniques used in movie subtitles, because the phenomenon that frequently occurs shows that it has a tendency to use subtitles regardless of their disadvantages, so the translator requires appropriate translation techniques in order to transfer the message clearly from the source language into the target language Investigated problem: The recent phenomenon in Indonesia shows that it has the tendency on using the subtitle regardless its drawback. As it is known, there is still the use of subtitles that are not of good quality and there is also the use of subtitles whose quality is much better based on the use appropriate translation techniques. Methodology: To answer the research question, a descriptive qualitative research strategy was utilized, as well as content analysis, which focuses on the analysis of the sorts of translation approaches proposed by Molina and Albir. The researchers used movie and documentation as the research instrument. The data source of this research was the movie script “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on The Run” The area of practical use of the research results: As the result of this research, the researchers found 14 types of translation techniques. The most dominant of translation techniques is literal translation 67 data (33.5 %), followed by modulation 55 data (27.5 %), generalization 26 data (13 %), linguistic amplification 11 data (5.5 %), established equivalence 9 data (4.5 %), linguistic compression 8 data (4 %), transposition 7 data (3.5 %), compensation 5 data (2.5 %), calque and reduction 3 data for each other (1.5 %), borrowing and discursive creation 2 data for each other (1 %), adaptation and description 1 data for each other (0.5 %). Involving the total data are 200 data Innovative technological product: The result of this research as the reflection and references for linguists and scientist not only to the quality of machine translation such as google translate, and so on but also to the use of good translation in the subtitle in the future. Scope of the innovative technological product: The scope lies on the subtitle product produced by translator. The translator needs to know the target (audience) and the translation must meet the criteria and the target. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the translation techniques used in the translation of subtitle are literal translation and modulation. The result shows that literal translation and modulation are the main contributors on the translation techniques in order to accurately translate it
