Coping with unpredictable environments: fine-tune foraging microhabitat use in relation to prey availability in an alpine species

Abstract:Microhabitat utilisation holds a pivotal role in shaping a species' ecological dynamics and stands as a crucial concern for effective conservation strategies. Despite its critical importance, microhabitat use has frequently been addressed as static, centering on microhabitat preference. Yet, a dynamic microhabitat use that allows individuals to adjust to fine-scale spatio-temporal prey fluctuations, becomes imperative for species thriving in challenging environments. High-elevation ecosystems, marked by brief growing seasons and distinct abiotic processes like snowmelt, winds, and solar radiation, feature an ephemeral distribution of key resources. To better understand species' strategies in coping with these rapidly changing environments, we delved into the foraging behaviour of the white-winged snowfinch Montifringilla nivalis , an emblematic high-elevation passerine. Through studying microhabitat preferences during breeding while assessing invertebrate prey availability, we unveiled a highly flexible microhabitat use process. Notably, snowfinches exhibited specific microhabitat preferences, favoring grass and melting snow margins, while also responding to local invertebrate availability. This behaviour was particularly evident in snow-associated microhabitats and less pronounced amid tall grass. Moreover, our investigation underscored snowfinches' fidelity to foraging sites, with over half located within 10 m of previous spots. This consistent use prevailed in snow-associated microhabitats and high-prey-density zones. These findings provide the first evidence of dynamic microhabitat use in high-elevation ecosystems and offer further insights into the crucial role of microhabitats for climate-sensitive species. They call for multi-faceted conservation strategies that go beyond identifying and protecting optimal thermal buffering areas in the face of global warming to also encompass locations hosting high invertebrate densities.

Abstract:During breeding, parents of avian species must increase their foraging efforts to collect food for their offspring, besides themselves. Foraging trips are thus a key aspect of the foraging ecology of central-place foragers when rearing their offspring. However, studies of the foraging ecology of high-elevation specialists inhabiting harsh environments are scarce. Here we report for the first time quantitative information on ecological determinants of foraging trips in the White-winged Snowfinch (Montifringilla nivalis), a high-elevation specialist threatened by climate warming. We focused on seasonal, meteorological, habitat and social factors affecting distance and duration of foraging trips performed during nestling rearing, recorded by visual observations in the Italian Alps. Based on 309 foraging trips from 35 pairs, we found that trips lasted 6.12 min and foraging areas were located at 175 m from the nest site on average.

Abstract:Marine top predators are expected to adjust their foraging behaviour at multiple time scales concomitantly with changes in forage fish availability. Rhinoceros auklets Cerorhinca monocerata rearing chicks at Teuri Island, Japan Sea, fed on anchovy Engraulis japonicus in 2012 and 2013 (anchovy regime) but switched to sand lance Ammodytes spp in 2019 and 2020 (sand lance regime). Here, we studied their at-sea behaviour using the GPS locations of 33 birds and the depth-acceleration records of 26 birds, and compared their foraging behaviour between these prey regimes. At the trip scale, auklets used offshore waters (> 50 m sea depth) and coastal waters in the anchovy regime but used mainland coastal waters (< 50 m sea depth) in the sand lance regime. In the sand lance regime, the birds also conducted more overnight 2- to 4-day trips in 2020 and spent more time flying during 1-day trips as they fed in further areas compared to the anchovy regime. At the dive scale, auklets frequently dove to both < 5 m and 20–30 m depths in the anchovy regime but mainly to < 5 m depth in the sand lance regime. Within each dive, auklets showed a greater number of fast/strong wing stroke events in the anchovy regime than in the sand lance regime. These changes in auklet behaviour reflected the different habitats, depth distribution, and swim speed of the targeted prey species. Our study shows the behavioural flexibility of a wing-propelled flying-diving seabird in response to the inter-annual shifts in the dominant forage fish community. It also indicates the ecological constraints on the mechanisms determining nest productivity in this day-foraging/night-provisioning seabird.

Invertebrates on snow patch margins in two habitats were exploited, but those trapped on the snow surface were not. Abstract:Many studies have reported intraspecific variations in leaf functional traits, but their contribution to plant performance and ecosystem function are poorly understood. We studied altitudinal gradients of intraspecific variations in leaf traits, productivity, and resource use efficiency in the dominant species of subalpine evergreen coniferous and deciduous broad‐leaved forests in Japan.We addressed three hypotheses, which are exclusive to each other. 1) Leaf traits vary along the leaf economics spectrum (LES). Plants that grow at lower and higher altitudes have fast‐ and slow‐return strategies, respectively, which improve productivity or resource use efficiency in the respective habitat. 2) Leaf trait variations are not consistent with the LES, but they contribute to improving productivity or resource use efficiency in the respective habitat. 3) Leaf trait variations do not contribute to improving productivity or resource use efficiency at higher altitudes.On the studied mountain range, Fagus crenata, a deciduous broad‐leaved tree, and Abies mariesii, an evergreen conifer, are the dominant species at lower and higher altitudes, respectively. In F. crenata, leaf mass per area (LMA) and nitrogen concentrations were higher at higher altitudes. The net assimilation rate and light use efficiency during the growing season were greater at higher altitudes, which compensated for the shorter growing season in terms of annual productivity. In A. mariesii, the LMA was lower and the leaf life span was unchanged at higher altitudes. Productivity and resource use efficiency decreased with altitude.Synthesis. We conclude that F. crenata improves its productivity and resource use efficiency at higher altitudes by altering its leaf functional traits (Hypothesis 2), whereas alterations to leaf traits in A. mariesii are not associated with any improvement at higher altitudes (Hypothesis 3), which may result from the negative impact of environmental stress. Hence, the ecological significance of altitudinal variations in leaf traits depends on species and environment.

Abstract:The present study aimed to investigate the nutritional aspects of the bear diet quantitatively, in order to understand plant food selection in spring. Bears were observed directly from April to July in 2013 and 2014, to visually recognize plant species consumed by bears, and to describe the foraging period in the Ashio-Nikko Mountains, central Japan. Leaves were collected from eight dominant tree species, regardless of whether bears fed on them in spring, and their key nutritional components analyzed: crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and total energy. Bears tended to consume fresh leaves of specific species in May, and nutritional analysis revealed that these leaves had higher CP and lower NDF than other non-food leaves. However, CP in consumed leaves gradually decreased, and NDF increased from May to July, when the bears' food item preference changed from plant materials to ants. Bears may consume tree leaves with high CP and low NDF after hibernation to rebuild muscle mass.

Abstract:This manuscript studied the breeding behavior in the Gray‐backed Shrike (Lanius tephronotus); the research object is valuable. Then, the research conclusion about parental investment preferences has certain reference value. In the northeastern edge of the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau, the Gray‐backed Shrike, a shrubland bird species of the plateau, confronts harsh living conditions. The impact of such an environment on their reproductive strategies has long intrigued us. This study reveals significant environmental effects on the investment of the Gray‐backed Shrike during their nestling‐rearing and egg‐laying stages. (1) Based on measurements of 215 shrike eggs from 2017 to 2021, we found that under the cold alpine climate, Gray‐backed Shrikes opt for a strategy of larger clutches and bigger eggs as average rainfall decreases. Concurrently, parents display a decreasing hatching order strategy, resulting in significant weight differences among newly hatched nestlings. (2) Marginal and core offspring exhibited no significant differences in fledging conditions. Core offspring generally have a slightly larger physique than marginal ones. However, marginal offspring exhibit the highest growth rate, with similar survival rates across different offspring categories. Parental rearing adopts a nest survival strategy. (3) The food provisioning rate by parents correlates strongly with the number of nestlings, the age of the nestling, and the nest's sex ratio. Differences exist between female and male provisioning rates based on begging intensity and average temperature; higher average temperatures lead to more food, with males providing more food. (4) Factors like nest sex ratio, offspring category, nestling age, and nestling sex influence the feeding preferences of parents. When overall nestling ratios skew towards either male or female, parental feeding preferences align with the actual nest sex ratio. Male and female parental feeding preferences differ based on average temperature and nestling sex. Males consistently exhibit a stronger preference for feeding male nestlings, regardless of the nest's sex ratio. In contrast, females don't show a clear preference, leading to differences in survival rates for different nestling sex under male feeding preferences.

Abstract:Species with similar ecological requirements that overlap in range tend to segregate their niches to minimize competition for resources. However, the niche segregation possibilities for centrally foraging predators that breed on isolated Subantarctic islands may be reduced by spatial constraints and limitations in the availability of alternative prey. In this study we examined spatial and trophic aspects of the foraging niches of two sympatrically breeding penguin species, macaroni (Eudyptes chrysolophus; MAC) and chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarcticus; CHIN) penguins, at Bouvetøya over two breeding seasons. To measure at-sea movements and diving behaviour, 90 MACs and 49 CHINs were equipped with GPS loggers and dive recorders during two austral summer breeding seasons (2014/15 and 2017/18). In addition, blood samples from tracked birds were analysed for stable isotopes to obtain dietary information. CHINs displayed marked interannual variation in foraging behaviour, diving deeper, utilizing a larger foraging area and displaying enriched values of δ15N in 2014/15 compared to the 2017/18 breeding season. In contrast, MACs dove to similar depths and showed similar δ15N values, while consistently utilizing larger foraging areas compared to CHINs. We suggest that low krill abundances in the waters around Bouvetøya during the 2014/15 season resulted in CHINs shifting toward a diet that increased their niche overlap with MACs. Our findings may partly explain the decreasing number of breeding CHINs at the world’s most remote island, Bouvetøya, while also highlighting the importance of characterizing niche overlap of species using multi-season data sets.

Abstract:The Alpine Chough Pyrrhocorax graculus is a social corvid which now uses food provided by tourist activities in mountain regions (e.g. at ski stations, refuse dumps, picnic areas). Foraging flock size, flock distribution and flock structure of Alpine Choughs were studied in the northern French Alps between 1988 and 1992. Flock size varied during the year, being larger in winter than in summer. Alpine Choughs were not evenly distributed in space, and their numbers depended principally on site‐specific factors, such as seasonal human presence. A significant positive correlation existed between Alpine Chough foraging flock size and the local human population. Immature birds gathered in winter in the largest flocks and principally frequented sites with the greatest food availability (e.g. refuse dump). In summer, immatures dispersed, joined small breeding groups and were more homogeneously distributed.

Abstract:BackgroundHabitat selection is linked to a range of behavioral and non-habitat-related phenomena. The Snow Partridge (Lerwa lerwa) is a little known bird distributed along the Himalayas at high elevations in extreme habitat and a harsh climate. Unravelling the use of its habitat is important not only for understanding the ecology of this bird but also for its protection and conservation. Recent advances in modeling algorithms, in conjunction with the availability of environmental data, have made species distribution models (SDMs) widely accessible and used to predict available habitat and potential distributions.MethodsWe conducted a field study at Balangshan mountains on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in west central China in August 2013. A line transect method and playback of recordings were used to survey suitable habitats. We established 20 m × 20 m plots at each flock location as well as control plots and measured 18 environmental variables. We used models of random forests to determine the micro-habitat variables that Snow Partridges might select, based on 25 presence and 27 absence locations and a maximum entropy algorithm (MaxEnt ver. 3.3.3.e) to predict their distribution in three counties, i.e., Wenchuan, Xiaojin and Baoxing in Sichuan Province, with a total area of 12,800 km2, adjacent to our main study site.ResultsWe found a total of 13 flocks of the Snow Partridge in our study area on pyramidal peaks, arêtes and steep rock slopes above 4430 m. The species is associated with habitats at the top of high cliffs or flatter terrain close to high cliffs, on more gentle slopes but still at high elevations. Terrain factors were the main factors affecting the selection of the micro-habitat by this partridge while vegetation is a more important factor at the meso-scale, with elevation as an important factor at both scales. Only 6.64% of our study area had features that might provide a suitable habitat for the Snow Partridge.ConclusionsMovements of the Snow Partridge, covering elevations from 4400 to 4700 m, were significantly associated with their habitat selection, whether on a micro- or a meso-scale of the three counties. Scale effect is an obvious topographic factor affecting the birds to avoid predators at the micro-habitat level and vegetation structure at the meso-habitat level for accessing food. Post-breeding habitat selection seems a trade-off between food availability and predator avoidance.

Abstract:Premise Mast flowering/seeding is often more extreme in lower‐resource environments, such as alpine compared to lowland habitats. We studied a masting herb that had less extreme masting at higher elevations, and tested if this difference could be explained by higher photosynthetic productivity and/or lower reproductive investment at the higher‐elevation sites. Methods We examined the relationship between flowering intervals and carbon budget (i.e., the balance between reproductive investment and annual carbon fixation) in a masting herb, Veratrum album subsp. oxysepalum, across five lowland and six alpine populations in northern Japan. We evaluated the previous flowering histories of individual plants based on rhizome morphology and analyzed the masting patterns of individual populations. Total mass of the reproductive organs, as a proxy of reproductive investment, was compared between the lowland and alpine populations. Annual carbon fixation was estimated on the basis of photosynthetic capacity, total leaf area per plant, and seasonal transition of light availability. Results Interval between high‐flowering years was shorter and total reproductive investment was smaller in the alpine than in the lowland populations. Owing to its high photosynthetic capacity and continuous bright conditions, annual carbon fixation per plant was 1.5 times greater in alpine habitat than in lowland habitat. These results suggest that V. album alpine populations have shorter flowering intervals than lowland populations due to faster recovery from energy loss after reproduction. Conclusions Our study demonstrated that masting intervals in V. album populations can be explained by habitat‐specific carbon budget balances.

Comparative Study on Flower Trait, Pollinator Visitation Rate and Seed Production of Two Pedicularis Species

Abstract:Pedicularis species display high variation in their flower sizes and shapes on alpine meadows.In order to explore whether the flower morphologies are associated with their reproductive strategies among the species,and to test whether the mimicry functioned to avoid birds and/or herbivore visit and attract insect pollinators,flower trait,nectar volume,pollinator visitation rate,and seed output were investigated for a short-tubed,toothed species(Pedicularis polyodonta) and a long-tube,beaked species(P.armata) on Zoige Plateau,Sichuan,China.In particular,flowers of the former species have bird head-like corollas,making the plants look like a flock of birds foraging on ground,and appearing to be a type of mimicry.It was found that P.polyodonta had fewer and smaller flowers with a larger volume of nectar,and its flowers were more frequently visited by bees and with more fruit set.P.polyodonta had more and smaller seeds than did P.armata.However,the two Pedicularis species did not differ in seed output per flower,suggesting that the reproductive successes of P.polyodonta and P.armata are primarily dependent upon flower quality(as indicated by nectar volume) and quantity(as indicated by flower number per individual),respectively.In addition,there was no significant difference in locusts' feeding preference between P.polyodonta populations with or without the bird head-like corollars,suggesting that the mimicry did not prevent insect herbivores.Bird visitation rate was higher,but bee visitation rate was lower in P.armata than P.polyodonta stands,suggesting that the mimicry might be helpful to attracting bees but preventing birds visit.Fig 2,Tab 1,Ref 37

Abstract:The study focused on the breeding ecology of the Sclater's monal in the alpine environment of western Yunnan, China. It found that the species has a low population density and restricted nesting sites, with intense male–male competition observed. Females invest significantly more time in incubation, likely to cope with harsh conditions. These findings highlight the importance of understanding avian reproduction ecology for the conservation of threatened species like the Sclater's monal. Breeding in alpine environments poses significant challenges to birds, requiring specific adaptations for survival. The Sclater's monal (Lophophorus sclateri), a regionally threatened, typical alpine pheasant species, is restricted to high‐elevation habitat from the East Himalayas to the mountains of west Yunnan, China. Due to its low population density and the difficulty of accessing its habitats, the breeding ecology of this species is understudied. Therefore, we aimed to understand the breeding behavior, nest site use, and life‐history traits that allow this monal species to cope with the alpine environment. During our fieldwork from March to June 2015 and 2016 in the Gaoligong Mountains in western Yunnan, China, we found six cliff nesting sites ranging from 3535 m to 3892 m. Three sites were active, with one being used in both years, and the remaining three were inactive but had been used in prior years. The clutch size was 2.75 ± 0.5 (2 or 3 eggs; n = 4 nests at three nesting sites), and all 11 eggs were successfully hatched. The female solely performed incubation, spending 97.2% of its time in incubating with an average duration of 25.69 ± 13.79 h (n = 43 bouts across three females) per on‐bout which indicates the female bird invested more time than other pheasants. High incubation attendance by females highlights the importance of increased parental care in ensuring reproductive success. These findings highlight that the Sclater monal exhibits specific breeding behaviors and nesting strategies that reflect adaption to harsh environments. Additionally, our observations of intense male–male interactions and reuse of nesting sites suggest that suitable nesting sites are limited, which could significantly impact population dynamics. Together, these insights are crucial for conserving this regionally threatened pheasant.

Coping with extremes: High-altitude sparrows enhance metabolic and thermogenic capacities in the pectoralis muscle and suppress in the liver relative to their lowland counterparts

Abstract:Animals living at high altitudes are challenged by the extreme environmental conditions of cold temperature and hypobaric hypoxia. It is not well understood how high-altitude birds enhance the capacity of metabolic thermogenesis and allocate metabolic capacity in different organs to maximize survival in extreme conditions of a cold winter. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is the largest and highest plateau globally, offering a natural laboratory for investigating coping mechanisms of organisms inhabiting extreme environments. To understand the adaptive strategies in the morphology and physiology of small songbirds on the QTP, we compared plasma triiodothyronine (T3), pectoralis muscle mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (COX) and state IV capacities, the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator α (PGC-1α), adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT), uncoupling protein (UCP), and adenosine monophosphate‐dependent kinase (AMPK) α1 mRNA in the pectoralis and liver of Eurasian tree sparrows (Passer montanus) from high-altitude (3,230 m), medium-altitude (1400 m), and low-altitude (80 m) regions. Our results showed that high-altitude sparrows had greater body masses, longer wings and tarsometatarsi, but comparable bill lengths relative to medium- and low-altitude individuals. High-altitude sparrows had higher plasma T3 levels and pectoralis muscle mitochondrial COX capacities than their lowland counterparts. They also upregulated the pectoralis muscle mRNA expression of UCP, PGC-1α, and ANT proteins relative to low-altitude sparrows. Unlike pectoralis, high-altitude sparrows significantly down-regulated hepatic AMPKα1 and ANT protein expression as compared with their lowland counterparts. Our results contribute to understanding the morphological, biochemical, and molecular adaptations in free-living birds to cope with the cold seasons in the extreme environment of the QTP.

Abstract:Abstract A continuous balance between costs and benefits dictates individual vigilance and foraging dynamics. In group-living animals, understanding the resulting trade-off is often complicated by multiple confounding effects. Vigilance and foraging levels may be the result of intrinsic (e.g., body size, trophic ecology, migratory phenology) and extrinsic (e.g., flock size, edge effect, group dynamism) factors, potentially differing between species, individuals, and contexts. We explored this idea by investigating intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing vigilance and foraging behavior of two sympatric gregarious bird species that differ markedly in body size and foraging strategies (Greylag Goose Anser anser and Common Crane Grus grus), during their non-breeding period. Interspecific differences were detected in activity allocation and in response to group-related variables. For both species, time spent in vigilance decreased with increasing flock size and with increasing distance from the edge of the group. While cranes allocated the resulting time to foraging, the same did not occur in geese. Changes in individual position in the group (i.e., peripheral vs. central or vice versa) elicited a prompt behavioral change (i.e., vigilance vs. foraging or other activity). Temporal changes in activity budgets were reported for geese but not for cranes, with a decrease of vigilance and an increase of foraging as winter progressed. Results allowed to disentangle the role of multifactorial determinants of vigilance and foraging, in turn increasing our understanding of underlying forces driving the evolution of behavioral traits and of group-living.
