Abstract:The aim of this note is to describe the structure of finite meadows. We will show that the class of finite meadows is the closure of the class of finite fields under finite products. As a corollary, we obtain a unique representation of minimal meadows in terms of prime fields.

Abstract:Abstract A meadow is a commutative ring with an inverse operator satisfying 0 −1 = 0. We determine the initial algebra of the meadows of characteristic 0 and prove a normal form theorem for it. As an immediate consequence we obtain the decidability of the closed term problem for meadows and the computability of their initial object.

Abstract:Common meadows are commutative and associative algebraic structures with two operations (addition and multiplication) with additive and multiplicative identities and for which inverses are total. The inverse of zero is an error term $\mathbf{a}$ which is absorbent for addition. We study the problem of enumerating all finite common meadows of \emph{order} $n$ (that is, common meadows with $n$ elements). This problem turns out to be deeply connected with both the number of finite rings of order $n$ and with the number of a certain kind of partition of positive integers.

Abstract:Meadows are a sort of commutative rings with a multiplicative identity element and a total multiplicative inverse operation. In this paper we study algebraic properties of common meadows, which are meadows that introduce, as the inverse of zero, an error term $\abf$ which is absorbent for addition. We show that common meadows are unions of rings which are ordered by a partial order that defines a lattice. These results allow us to generalize some classical algebraic constructions to the setting of common meadows. We also briefly consider common meadows from a categorical perspective.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of Artinian meadow as an algebraic structure constructed from an Artinian ring which is also a common meadow, i.e.\ a commutative and associative structure with two operations (addition and multiplication) with additive and multiplicative identities and for which inverses are total. The inverse of zero in a common meadow is an error term $\mathbb{a}$ which is absorbent for addition. We show that, in analogy with what happens with commutative unital Artinian rings, Artinian meadows decompose as a product of local meadows in an essentially unique way. We also provide a canonical way to construct meadows from unital commutative rings.

Abstract:Meadows have been proposed as alternatives for fields with a purely equational axiomatization. At the basis of meadows lies the decision to make the multiplicative inverse operation total by imposing that the multiplicative inverse of zero is zero. Thus, the multiplicative inverse operation of a meadow is an involution. In this paper, we study ‘non-involutive meadows’, i.e. variants of meadows in which the multiplicative inverse of zero is not zero, and pay special attention to non-involutive meadows in which the multiplicative inverse of zero is one.

Abstract:The rational, real and complex numbers with their standard operations, including division, are partial algebras specified by the axiomatic concept of a field. Since the class of fields cannot be defined by equations, the theory of equational specifications of data types cannot use field theory in applications to number systems based upon rational, real and complex numbers. We study a new axiomatic concept for number systems with division that uses only equations: a meadow is a commutative ring with a total inverse operator satisfying two equations which imply 0−1=0. All fields and products of fields can be viewed as meadows. After reviewing alternate axioms for inverse, we start the development of a theory of meadows. We give a general representation theorem for meadows and find, as a corollary, that the conditional equational theory of meadows coincides with the conditional equational theory of zero totalized fields. We also prove representation results for meadows of finite characteristic.

Viewing a fraction as a term over the signature of divisive meadows that is of the form p/q, we investigate which divisive meadows admit transformation of fractions into simple fractions, i.e. fractions without proper subterms that are fractions.

Abstract:A skew meadow is a non-commutative ring with an inverse operator satisfying two special equations and in which the inverse of zero is zero. All skew fields and products of skew fields can be viewed as skew meadows. Conversely, we give an embedding of non-trivial skew meadows into products of skew fields, from which a completeness result for the equational logic of skew fields is derived. The relationship between regularity conditions on rings and skew meadows is investigated.

Abstract:We bridge sheaves of rings over a topological space with common meadows (algebraic structures where the inverse for multiplication is a total operation). More specifically, we show that the subclass of pre-meadows with $\mathbf{a}$, coming from the lattice of open sets of a topological space $X$, and presheaves over $X$ are the same structure. Furthermore, we provide a construction that, given a sheaf of rings $\mathcal{F}$ on $X$ produces a common meadow as a disjoint union of elements of the form $\mathcal{F}(U)$ indexed over the open subsets of $X$. We also establish a correspondence between the process of going from a presheaf to a sheaf (called sheafification) and the process of going from a pre-meadow with $\mathbf{a}$ to a common meadow.

Abstract:Inversive meadows are commutative rings with a multiplicative identity element and a total multiplicative inverse operation satisfying 0−1=0. Divisive meadows are inversive meadows with the multiplicative inverse operation replaced by a division operation. We give finite equational specifications of the class of all inversive meadows and the class of all divisive meadows. It depends on the angle from which they are viewed whether inversive meadows or divisive meadows must be considered more basic. We show that inversive and divisive meadows of rational numbers can be obtained as initial algebras of finite equational specifications. In the spirit of Peacockʼs arithmetical algebra, we study variants of inversive and divisive meadows without an additive identity element and/or an additive inverse operation. We propose simple constructions of variants of inversive and divisive meadows with a partial multiplicative inverse or division operation from inversive and divisive meadows. Divisive meadows are more basic if these variants are considered as well. We give a simple account of how mathematicians deal with 1/0, in which meadows and a customary convention among mathematicians play prominent parts, and we make plausible that a convincing account, starting from the popular computer science viewpoint that 1/0 is undefined, by means of some logic of partial functions is not attainable.

Abstract:We show that if a field A is not pseudo-finite, then there is no prime model of the theory of pseudo-finite fields over A. Assuming GCH, we generalise this result to \kappa-prime models, for \kappa a regular uncountable cardinal or \aleph_\epsilon.

Abstract:A meadow is a zero totalised field (0^{-1}=0), and a cancellation meadow is a meadow without proper zero divisors. In this paper we consider differential meadows, i.e., meadows equipped with differentiation operators. We give an equational axiomatization of these operators and thus obtain a finite basis for differential cancellation meadows. Using the Zariski topology we prove the existence of a differential cancellation meadow.

Abstract:We investigate a notion of inverse for neutrices inspired by Van den Berg and Koudjeti's decomposition of a neutrix as the product of a real number and an idempotent neutrix. We end up with an algebraic structure that can be characterized axiomatically and generalizes involutive meadows. The latter are algebraic structures where the inverse for multiplication is a total operation. As it turns out, the structures satisfying the axioms of flexible involutive meadows are of interest beyond nonstandard analysis.

A Complete Finite Axiomatisation of the Equational Theory of Common Meadows

Abstract:We analyse abstract data types that model numerical structures with a concept of error. Specifically, we focus on arithmetic data types that contain an error value $\bot$ whose main purpose is to always return a value for division. To rings and fields, we add a division operator $x/y$ and study a class of algebras called common meadows wherein $x/0 = \bot$. The set of equations true in all common meadows is named the equational theory of common meadows. We give a finite equational axiomatisation of the equational theory of common meadows and prove that it is complete and that the equational theory is decidable.

Abstract:The main goal of this project is to prove the equivalency of several characterizations of completeness of Archimedean ordered fields; some of which appear in most modern literature as theorems following from the Dedekind completeness of the real numbers, while a couple are not as well known and have to do with other areas of mathematics, such as nonstandard analysis. Continuing, we study the completeness of non-Archimedean fields, and provide several examples of such fields with varying degrees of properties, using nonstandard analysis to produce some relatively "nice" (in particular, they are Cantor complete) final examples. As a small detour, we present a short construction of the real numbers using methods from nonstandard analysis.
