Abstract:While neural-based text to speech (TTS) models can synthesize natural and intelligible voice, they usually require high-quality speech data, which is costly to collect. In many scenarios, only noisy speech of a target speaker is available, which presents challenges for TTS model training for this speaker. Previous works usually address the challenge using two methods: 1) training the TTS model using the speech denoised with an enhancement model; 2) taking a single noise embedding as input when training with noisy speech. However, they usually cannot handle speech with real-world complicated noise such as those with high variations along time. In this paper, we develop DenoiSpeech, a TTS system that can synthesize clean speech for a speaker with noisy speech data. In DenoiSpeech, we handle real-world noisy speech by modeling the fine-grained frame-level noise with a noise condition module, which is jointly trained with the TTS model. Experimental results on real-world data show that DenoiSpeech outperforms the previous two methods by 0.31 and 0.66 MOS respectively.(1)

Abstract:In this paper, we propose the use of denoising for microphone classification, to enable its usage for several key application domains that involve noisy conditions. We describe the proposed analysis pipeline and the baseline algorithm for microphone classification, and discuss various denoising approaches which can be applied to it within the time or spectral domain; finally, we determine the best-performing denoising procedure, and evaluate the performance of the overall, integrated approach with several SNR levels of additive input noise. As a result, the proposed method achieves an average accuracy increase of about 25% on denoised content over the reference baseline.
Biodenoising: animal vocalization denoising without access to clean data

Abstract:Animal vocalization denoising is a task similar to human speech enhancement, a well-studied field of research. In contrast to the latter, it is applied to a higher diversity of sound production mechanisms and recording environments, and this higher diversity is a challenge for existing models. Adding to the challenge and in contrast to speech, we lack large and diverse datasets comprising clean vocalizations. As a solution we use as training data pseudo-clean targets, i.e. pre-denoised vocalizations, and segments of background noise without a vocalization. We propose a train set derived from bioacoustics datasets and repositories representing diverse species, acoustic environments, geographic regions. Additionally, we introduce a non-overlapping benchmark set comprising clean vocalizations from different taxa and noise samples. We show that that denoising models (demucs, CleanUNet) trained on pseudo-clean targets obtained with speech enhancement models achieve competitive results on the benchmarking set. An incremental algorithm based on multichannel non-negative matrix partial co-factorization for ambient denoising in auscultation

Abstract:The aim of this study is to implement a method to remove ambient noise in biomedical sounds captured in auscultation. We propose an incremental approach based on multichannel non-negative matrix partial co-factorization (NMPCF) for ambient denoising focusing on high noisy environment with a Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) <= -5 dB. The first contribution applies NMPCF assuming that ambient noise can be modelled as repetitive sound events simultaneously found in two single-channel inputs captured by means of different recording devices. The second contribution proposes an incremental algorithm, based on the previous multichannel NMPCF, that refines the estimated biomedical spectrogram throughout a set of incremental stages by eliminating most of the ambient noise that was not removed in the previous stage at the expense of preserving most of the biomedical spectral content. The ambient denoising performance of the proposed method, compared to some of the most relevant state-of-the-art methods, has been evaluated using a set of recordings composed of biomedical sounds mixed with ambient noise that typically surrounds a medical consultation room to simulate high noisy environments with a SNR from -20 dB to -5 dB. Experimental results report that: (i) the performance drop suffered by the proposed method is lower compared to MSS and NLMS; (ii) unlike what happens with MSS and NLMS, the proposed method shows a stable trend of the average SDR and SIR results regardless of the type of ambient noise and the SNR level evaluated; and (iii) a remarkable advantage is the high robustness of the estimated biomedical sounds when the two single-channel inputs suffer from a delay between them.

Deep sound-field denoiser: optically-measured sound-field denoising using deep neural network

Abstract:This paper proposes a deep sound-field denoiser, a deep neural network (DNN) based denoising of optically measured sound-field images. Sound-field imaging using optical methods has gained considerable attention due to its ability to achieve high-spatial-resolution imaging of acoustic phenomena that conventional acoustic sensors cannot accomplish. However, the optically measured sound-field images are often heavily contaminated by noise because of the low sensitivity of optical interferometric measurements to airborne sound. Here, we propose a DNN-based sound-field denoising method. Time-varying sound-field image sequences are decomposed into harmonic complex-amplitude images by using a time-directional Fourier transform. The complex images are converted into two-channel images consisting of real and imaginary parts and denoised by a nonlinear-activation-free network. The network is trained on a sound-field dataset obtained from numerical acoustic simulations with randomized parameters. We compared the method with conventional ones, such as image filters, a spatiotemporal filter, and other DNN architectures, on numerical and experimental data. The experimental data were measured by parallel phase-shifting interferometry and holographic speckle interferometry. The proposed deep sound-field denoiser significantly outperformed the conventional methods on both the numerical and experimental data. Deep Denoising for Hearing Aid Applications

Abstract:Reduction of unwanted environmental noises is an important feature of today's hearing aids (HA), which is why noise reduction is nowadays included in almost every commercially available device. The majority of these algorithms, however, is restricted to the reduction of stationary noises. In this work, we propose a denoising approach based on a three hidden layer fully connected deep learning network that aims to predict a Wiener filtering gain with an asymmetric input context, enabling real-time applications with high constraints on signal delay. The approach is employing a hearing instrument-grade filter bank and complies with typical hearing aid demands, such as low latency and on-line processing. It can further be well integrated with other algorithms in an existing HA signal processing chain. We can show on a database of real world noise signals that our algorithm is able to outperform a state of the art baseline approach, both using objective metrics and subject tests.

Abstract:Technologies pertaining to improving an auditory experience of a listener are described. Audio is modified based upon noise generated by noise sources in an environment. A microphone generates a signal that is representative of noise in the environment, and the signal is processed to identify peak frequencies therein. When a key frequency of the audio is proximate to a peak frequency in the noise, the audio is modified to improve the listener's perception of the audio.
SoundSil-DS: Deep Denoising and Segmentation of Sound-field Images with Silhouettes

Abstract:Development of optical technology has enabled imaging of two-dimensional (2D) sound fields. This acousto-optic sensing enables understanding of the interaction between sound and objects such as reflection and diffraction. Moreover, it is expected to be used an advanced measurement technology for sonars in self-driving vehicles and assistive robots. However, the low sound-pressure sensitivity of the acousto-optic sensing results in high intensity of noise on images. Therefore, denoising is an essential task to visualize and analyze the sound fields. In addition to denoising, segmentation of sound and object silhouette is also required to analyze interactions between them. In this paper, we propose sound-field-images-with-object-silhouette denoising and segmentation (SoundSil-DS) that jointly perform denoising and segmentation for sound fields and object silhouettes on a visualized image. We developed a new model based on the current state-of-the-art denoising network. We also created a dataset to train and evaluate the proposed method through acoustic simulation. The proposed method was evaluated using both simulated and measured data. We confirmed that our method can applied to experimentally measured data. These results suggest that the proposed method may improve the post-processing for sound fields, such as physical model-based three-dimensional reconstruction since it can remove unwanted noise and separate sound fields and other object silhouettes. Abstract:Nonnegative matrix factorization- (NMF-) based noise reduction methods can effectively improve the performance of environmental sound recognition. However, when the environmental sound overlaps highly with the noise, the spectral line loss and noise residue will occur in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) condition. An adaptive noise reduction algorithm was proposed in this paper. First, noisy environmental sound is separated into estimated noise and environmental sound using NMF. Then, the estimated noise is used to calculate sound presence probability (SPP), which is adapted to decrease spectral line loss and achieve accurately estimated noise. Subsequently, the estimated noise combines with noisy environmental sound to obtain the estimated environmental sound. Finally, SPP is applied to reduce residual noise in the estimated environmental sound and reconstruct the environmental sound. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional algorithms and NMF-based methods in terms of perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) and global SNR with increase of X% and X%, respectively. Moreover, the proposed method can effectively improve the environmental sound recognition rate. Particularly, the proposed method makes a 16.2% increase of F1-score in car horn recognition under the realistic acoustic condition.

Abstract:Due to the influence of uncontrollable factors such as the environment and instruments, noise is unavoidable in a spectral signal, which may affect the spectral resolution and analysis result. In the present work, a novel spectral denoising method is developed based on the Hilbert–Huang transform (HHT) and F-test. In this approach, the original spectral signal is first decomposed by empirical mode decomposition (EMD). A series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and a residual ( r ) are obtained. Then, the Hilbert transform (HT) is performed on each IMF and r to calculate their instantaneous frequencies. The mean and standard deviation of instantaneous frequencies are calculated to further illustrate the IMF frequency information. Third, the F-test is used to determine the cut-off point between noise frequency components and non-noise ones. Finally, the denoising signal is reconstructed by adding the IMF components after the cut-off point. Artificially chemical noised signal, X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrum, and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS) are used to validate the performance of the method in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The results show that the method provides superior denoising capabilities compared with Savitzky–Golay (SG) smoothing.

Image denoising with less artefacts: Novel non-linear filtering on fast patch reorderings

Abstract:Leading denoising methods such as 3D block matching (BM3D) are patch-based. However, they can suffer from frequency domain artefacts and require to specify explicit noise models. We present a patch-based method that avoids these drawbacks. It combines a simple and fast patch reordering with a non-linear smoothing. The smoothing rewards both patch and pixel similarities in a multiplicative way. We perform experiments on real world images with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), and on electron microscopy data with a more general additive noise model. Our filter outperforms BM3D in 77% of the experiments, with improvements of up to 29% with respect to the mean squared error.

High-Fidelity Noise Reduction with Differentiable Signal Processing

Abstract:Noise reduction techniques based on deep learning have demonstrated impressive performance in enhancing the overall quality of recorded speech. While these approaches are highly performant, their application in audio engineering can be limited due to a number of factors. These include operation only on speech without support for music, lack of real-time capability, lack of interpretable control parameters, operation at lower sample rates, and a tendency to introduce artifacts. On the other hand, signal processing-based noise reduction algorithms offer fine-grained control and operation on a broad range of content, however, they often require manual operation to achieve the best results. To address the limitations of both approaches, in this work we introduce a method that leverages a signal processing-based denoiser that when combined with a neural network controller, enables fully automatic and high-fidelity noise reduction on both speech and music signals. We evaluate our proposed method with objective metrics and a perceptual listening test. Our evaluation reveals that speech enhancement models can be extended to music, however training the model to remove only stationary noise is critical. Furthermore, our proposed approach achieves performance on par with the deep learning models, while being significantly more efficient and introducing fewer artifacts in some cases. Abstract:Sonar, the instrument used for acquiring underwater acoustic images strongly participate in the assistance of detection and recognition of objects under the seafloor. Sonar emits sound waves to navigate deep into the sea and detects the sunken objects. The sonar images are also used for fish habitat mapping. Noise is an important factor that contributes to the degradation of quality of the images obtained by sonar. Generally speckle noise is found in the acoustic images which are caused by the instruments that affects the quality, thereby reducing visual perception. In this paper, various spatial filtering techniques have been applied to the acoustic images to remove the speckle noise. Among the filtering techniques available, bilateral filter followed by guided filter, when applied to the acoustic images tend to remove the speckle noise to a greater degree. The statistical methods for image quality assessment such as mean squared error (MSE), peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), Structural SIMilarity Index (SSIM) are used to compare the quality of the despeckled images.

Abstract:Clustering algorithms have the characteristics of being simple and efficient and can complete calculations without a large number of datasets, making them suitable for application in noise reduction processing for audio module mass production testing. In order to solve the problems of the NMF algorithm easily getting stuck in local optimal solutions and difficult feature signal extraction, an improved NMF audio denoising algorithm combined with K-means initialization was designed. Firstly, the Euclidean distance formula of K-means has been improved to extract audio signal features from multiple dimensions. Combined with the initialization strategy of K-means decomposition, the initialization dictionary matrix of the NMF algorithm has been optimized to avoid getting stuck in local optimal solutions and effectively improve the robustness of the algorithm. Secondly, in the sparse coding part of the NMF algorithm, feature extraction expressions are added to solve the problem of noise residue and partial spectral signal loss in audio signals during the operation process. At the same time, the size of the coefficient matrix is limited to reduce operation time and improve the accuracy of feature extraction in high-precision audio signals. Then, comparative experiments were conducted using the NOIZEUS and NOISEX-92 datasets, as well as random noise audio signals. This algorithm improved the signal-to-noise ratio by 10–20 dB and reduced harmonic distortion by approximately −10 dB. Finally, a high-precision audio acquisition unit based on FPGA was designed, and practical applications have shown that it can effectively improve the signal-to-noise ratio of audio signals and reduce harmonic distortion.

Abstract:<p>Denoising of spectra has been a great challenge in hyperspectral image analysis. Near-infrared hyperspectral images of milk powder, rice flour and soybean flour were acquired and denoising in the spectral domain were studied. Noise free spectra and noises were simulated based on sample pixel-wise spectra. The noisy spectra with signal to noise ratio (SNR) around 45 dB (similar to real pixel-wise spectra) were simulated. The simulated noisy spectra were preprocessed by traditional methods as moving average smoothing (MAS), Savitzky-Golay smoothing (SGS), wavelet transform (WT) and empirical mode decomposition (EMD). The basic denoising autoencoder (DAE-1) and the stacked DAE (DAE-2) were studied for denoising. The noisy spectra with SNR around 35 dB and 55 dB were further simulated to explore the effectiveness of DAE based methods. DAE-1 and DAE-2 performed better than the other methods, with higher SNR, lower mean squared error (MSE) and mean absolute error (MAE). The developed DAE methods were applied to real-world pixel-wise spectra with good performances. The overall results proved the feasibility of using DAE based methods for noise reduction in the spectral domain of hyperspectral images, and the DAE based methods have great potential to be extended to spectral denoising of other vibrational spectroscopy techniques.</p>

Abstract:Acoustic sensors that collect acoustic data over extended periods and broad ranges are widely used in bioacoustics monitoring. However, in open environments, acoustic data collected using acoustic sensors can be subject to interference from various real-world noises, thereby influencing the subsequent analysis and processing of bioacoustic data. Existing bioacoustic noise reduction methods are limited in their application because of their low efficiency, unsuitability for non-stationary noise, generally unimproved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) efficacy, and considerable amounts of residual noise. These limitations hinder the effective processing of recorded signals for which extraneous noise overlaps with bird vocalizations. In this study, we propose a bioacoustic noise reduction method based on a deep feature loss network for bird sounds. The method has a rapid denoising speed and can more effectively remove background noise from field recording signals without distorting the bird acoustic spectrum. The denoising effects of the proposed method were compared with those of a speech enhancement generative adversarial network, web real-time communications denoising, and other noise reduction methods. The denoising ability of these methods for different noises was evaluated using spectrograms and objective evaluation measures such as the SNR and perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ). The experimental results revealed that our proposed noise reduction method can obtain higher SNRs and PESQ scores than other noise reduction methods, with the SNR increasing by up to 35.83 dB following denoising.

Abstract:Eco-acoustic indices allow us to rapidly evaluate habitats and ecosystems and derive information about anthropophonic impacts. However, it is proven that indices' values and trends are not comparable between studies. These incongruences may be caused by the availability on the market of recorders with different characteristics and costs. Thus, there is a need to reduce these biases and incongruences to ensure an accurate analysis and comparison between soundscape ecology studies and habitat assessments. In this study, we propose and validate an audio recording equalization protocol to reduce eco-acoustic indices' biases, by testing three soundscape recorder models: Song Meter Micro, Soundscape Explorer Terrestrial and Audiomoth. The equalization process aligns the signal amplitude and frequency response of the soundscape recorders to those of a type 1 level meter. The adjustment was made in MATLAB R2023a using a filter curve generated comparing a reference signal (white noise); the measurements were performed in an anechoic chamber using 11 audio sensors and a type 1 sound level meter (able to produce a .WAV file). The statistical validation of the procedure was performed on recordings obtained in an urban and Regional Park (Italy) assessing a significant reduction in indices' biases on the Song Meter Micro and Audiomoth.

Abstract:Deep-learning-based approaches have achieved remarkable progress for complex real scenario denoising, yet their accuracy-efficiency tradeoff is still understudied, particularly critical for mobile devices. As real noise is unevenly distributed relative to underlay signals in different frequency bands, we introduce a frequency-aware divide-and-conquer strategy to develop a frequency-aware denoising network (FADN). FADN is materialized by stacking frequency-aware denoising blocks (FADBs), in which a denoised image is progressively predicted by a series of frequency-aware noise dividing and conquering operations. For noise dividing, FADBs decompose the noisy and clean image pairs into low-and high-frequency representations via a wavelet transform (WT) followed by an invertible network and recover the final denoised image by integrating the denoised information from different frequency bands. For noise conquering, the separated low-frequency representation of the noisy image is kept as clean as possible by the supervision of the clean counterpart, while the high-frequency representation combining the estimated residual from the successive FADB is purified under the corresponding accompanied supervision for residual compensation. Since our FADN progressively and pertinently denoises from frequency bands, the accuracy-efficiency tradeoff can be controlled as a requirement by the number of FADBs. Experimental results on the SIDD, DND, and NAM datasets show that our FADN outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by improving the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and decreasing the model parameters. Abstract:In this paper a signal denoising scheme based on Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is presented. The denoising method is a fully data driven approach. Noisy signal is decomposed adaptively into intrinsic oscillatory components called Intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using a decomposition algorithm called sifting process. The basic principle of the method is to decompose a speech signal into segments each frame is categorised as either signal-dominant or noise-dominant then reconstruct the signal with IMFs signal dominant frame previously filtered or thresholded. It is shown, on the basis of intensive simulations that EMD improves the signal to noise ratio and address the problem of signal degradation. The denoising method is applied to real signal with different noise levels and the results compared to Winner and universal threshold of DONOHO and JOHNSTONE [11] with soft and hard tresholding. The effect of level noise value on the performances of the proposed denoising is analysed. The study is limited to signals corrupted by additive white Gaussian random noise.

Image Denoising By Hybrid Average Gaussian Filter For Different Noises

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to embark on the study of four types of noises such as Gaussian, Salt and Pepper, Poisson, and Speckle noise. Image denoising is not only significant on the contrary problem of image processing which is helpful in the fields of remotely sensed scene interpretation, Biomedical imaging techniques, Gathering image’s lost information, image retrieval, mining of image etc, and an essential preprocessing technique to preserve the clarity of the naturally corrupted image which may be affected by the various types of noises. This paper reviews on the existing various filters having various variance of noises. Further, it analyses, examines and compares various filters with the proposed filter. The experimental results shown to be precised in terms of SNR and variance in noise. The results consider the quantitative measures of comparing the denoised images as output of various filters and the hybrid filter with the help of Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) and Peak-Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR).
