Abstract:Aryl diazonium salts are versatile building blocks in organic synthesis. In light of the ever-increasing importance of aryl diazonium salts spanning most disciplines of the chemical sciences, we review the recent development of aryl diazonium chemistry over the past seven years (2013-2020). Special emphasis is put on various new transformations involving the generation of radical intermediates via thermal, photochemical, and electrochemical means. Recent advances in the development of transition metal-catalyzed reactions using aryl diazonium salts are also reviewed. Together, these newly developed transformations significantly expand the synthetic chemist's repertoire of aromatic carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond forming methods using aryl diazonium precursors, providing powerful tools for the synthesis and modification of complex molecular scaffolds.

Abstract:Soluble aryl diazonium trifluoroacetates are introduced for safe photochemical aryl–aryl coupling to produce industrially relevant biphenyls, even on a gram scale. While conventional diazonium tetrafluoroborates fail, this mild synthesis requires no catalysts but only UV‐A light to generate aryl radicals for direct C−H arylation of various arenes. By implementing a capillary flow photoreactor, 13 biphenyl derivatives were synthesised and quantified by real‐time 19F NMR spectroscopy as an in‐line PAT tool. Abstract:Diazo compounds had been widely employed as a class of environment friendly and highly efficient coupling reagents in transition-metal-catalyzed C-H bonds insertion reactions.Recently, C-H alkylation of various arenes and heteroarenes has been achieved enormous successes using diazo compounds as the alkylation reagents under a new catalytic model.The recent progress in diazo compounds mediated transition-metal-catalyzed C-H alkylation and tandem C-H alkylation/cyclization is reviewed, including reaction mechanism and synthetic applications.Furthermore, the prospects of this reaction are also discussed.

Abstract:Aryldiazonium salts remain a staple in organic synthesis and are still prepared largely in accord with the protocol developed in the 19th century. Because of the favorable reactivity that often cannot be achieved with other aryl(pseudo)halides, diazonium chemistry continues to grow. Facile extrusion of dinitrogen contributes to the desired reactivity but is also reason for safety concerns. Explosions have occurred since the discovery of these reagents and still result in accidents. In this study, we report a diazonium chemistry paradigm shift based on nitrate reduction using thiosulfate or dihalocuprates as electron donors that avoids diazonium accumulation. Because nitrate reduction is rate-limiting, aryldiazoniums are produced as fleeting intermediates, which results in a safer and often more efficient deaminative halogenation in a single step from anilines.

Abstract:The use of sulfonium salts in organic synthesis has experienced a dramatic increase during the last years that can arguably be attributed to three main factors; the development of more direct and efficient synthetic methods that make easily available sulfonium reagents of a wide structural variety, their intrinsic thermal stability, which facilitates their structural modification, handling and purification even on large scale, and the recognition that their reactivity resembles that of hypervalent iodine compounds and therefore, they can be used as replacement of such reagents for most of their uses. This renewed interest has led to the improvement of already existing reactions, as well as to the discovery of unprecedented transformations; in particular, by the implementation of photocatalytic protocols. This review aims to summarize the most recent advancements on the area focusing on the work published during and after 2020. The scope of the methods developed will be highlighted and their limitations critically evaluated.

Abstract:Continuous flow chemistry has become the method of choice for the synthesis of toxic and explosive intermediates such as diazo reagents because they can be generated on demand and readily used, eliminating the need to handle hazardous materials. This inherent increase in safety makes it more feasible to use these reagents in day-to-day synthesis. Herein, we describe a continuous flow, metal-free, easy-to-use method for the preparation of semi-stabilized and unstabilized diazo reagents. The scope of the described continuous flow oxidation of hydrazones using a packed bed column with iodosylbenzene includes 13 semi-stabilized and 13 unstabilized diazo reagents in solution in dichloromethane while producing only 1 equivalent of water and iodobenzene as by-products. These otherwise difficult to access compounds are further reacted either in situ or at the reactor outlet to yield esters and ethers in good to excellent yields (47–96%).

As privileged compounds containing CF<sub>3</sub> groups and ease of synthetic access, aryl trifluoromethyl diazoalkanes and diazirines have been highlighted for their versatility in applications toward a wide range of synthetic transformations. This Perspective highlights the synthetic applications of these reactants as precursors of stabilized metal carbenes, i.e., donor-acceptor-substituted ones.

Abstract:Organosulfur compounds are ubiquitous in natural products and active pharmaceutical ingredients. They are also versatile scaffold that are widely applicable in material and food chemistry. The increasing demand indeed lead to a continuous progress in developing of new methodologies in organosulfur chemistry. Among them, sulfur ylides and sulfonium salts with unique reactivities have been employed to provide simple, effective, and often stereoselective methods to gain access to sulfur containing molecules. The essential goal of this review is to provide a comprehensive account of representative research progress on sulfonium salt and sulfur ylide chemistry in the past three years. Seminal reports on this topic are occasionally covered with the purpose of providing a brief research background. For the sake of convenience, this review is organized in three parts based on the role they played in organic reactions (synthetic intermediates, reagents and catalysts). In the first section, the development of new approaches for generate sulfur ylide or sulfonium salt intermediates were summarized. Electrophilic aryne species could be employed to react with sulfides or sulfoxides to form the desired sulfur intermediates, which could underwent a variety of interesting transformations. Moreover, recent progress in metal carbene-based sulfur ylide approaches have also been introduced. Both the progress in asymmetric catalysis variants and reactions in aqueous solution have been presented. The second section describes the transformations using stabilized sulfonium salts and sulfur ylides as bench-stable reactants. The extra stability of these species is accompanied by a compromise in the reactivity, which usually requires developing activation methods. With transition metal catalysts to activate sulfonium salts, they have been discovered as efficient coupling partners in carbon-carbon bond and carbon-heteroatom bond formation reactions. Stable sulfur ylides could also be utilized to install fluorine-containing groups in a large variety of transformations. The third section covers recent progress in employing sulfonium salts as catalysts in organic reactions. The acidity of the α C−H in sulfonium salt is relatively high than its nitrogen and phosphine analogues. Therefore, it could be easily removed to form the sulfur ylide, which have restricted its application as catalysts. On one hand, scientists took advantage of these properties and developed new cyclic sulfonium salts as hydrogen bonding catalysts. On the other hand, sulfonium salts could be used as stable phase transfer catalysts under base free conditions in order to avoid degradations. Finally, the review discussed the limitations of the known chemistry in this field as well as the future opportunities. Sulfur ylide and sulfonium salts have displayed many unique reactivities as summarized in this review. New reactivity will still be the central theme of research given the importance of organosulfur compounds. In addition, insights into the factors controlling the reactivity via mechanistic studies will be of great importance for further research and development. Moreover, the applications of sulfonium salts as organocatalysts are still limited to a relatively narrow range of transformations. Therefore, it remains to be an elusive task to unlock their full potential, and future research must include the development of scalable and cost-efficient methods, broadening of reaction scopes, and integration with other catalytic manifolds. We hope that this review will pique the interests of readers and deliver inspiration for future development in this interesting and promising field.

Abstract:Onium ylides are reactive intermediates that undergo versatile chemical transformations to give structurally interesting compounds. Rearrangement reactions of onium ylides are of great importance to synthetic organic chemists, as they provide efficient methods for C-C bond formations as well as installation of new stereogenic centers in molecules. Traditionally, onium ylides have been shown to undergo two types of rearrangements, namely, [2,3]- and [1,2]-rearrangements. In recent years, there have been tremendous developments in the field of metal-catalyzed onium ylide rearrangements through catalytic generation of ylide intermediates from diazocompounds. Several examples of selective catalytic onium ylide rearrangements involving sulfonium, oxonium, ammonium, as well as iodonium ylides have been developed over the years especially in allylic and propargylic systems. However, when the π-system that takes part in the rearrangement is part of an aromatic ring, the selectivity for rearrangements of reactive onium ylides is more challenging. In this review, we discuss recent advances in catalyst control of onium ylide rearrangements of aromatic systems.

Abstract:Due to similar reactivity in comparison with aromatic organometallic reagents, diaryliodonium salts are currently in broad usage as less toxic, highly efficient, stable and mild electrophilic reagents in organic synthesis. The hypervalent iodine center of diaryliodonium salts can lead to unique reactivity, which thus is frequently presented in metal-free arylations or metal-involved elementary reactions such as oxidative addition, reduction elimination, ligand coupling and ligand exchange reaction. As such, diaryliodonium salts have experienced explosive growth by transferring aromatics to the target molecules. In contrast to the reviews on the synthetic utility or aryl transformations by using diaryliodonium salts, this review provides a summary of their structures and the synthetic strategies towards them during recent decades.

Abstract:Copper-catalyzed reaction of diazo compounds generates copper carbene intermediates that undergo diverse transformations. In recent years, the selectivity and efficiency of these important conversions have been further improved. In particular, breakthroughs have been made in catalytic asymmetric polar X-H bond insertion reactions. Moreover, novel transformations based on copper carbene, namely copper-catalyzed cross-couplings of diazo compounds, have emerged as powerful methods for carbon-carbon bond formations. This feature article summarizes the most recent developments in this area.

Abstract:This paper reviews the surface modification strategies of a wide range of nanomaterials using aryldiazonium salts. After a brief history of diazonium salts since their discovery by Peter Griess in 1858, we will tackle the surface chemistry using these compounds since the first trials in the 1950s. We will then focus on the modern surface chemistry of aryldiazonium salts for the modification of materials, particularly metallic, semiconductors, metal oxide nanoparticles, carbon-based nanostructures, diamond and clays. The successful modification of sp(2) carbon materials and metals by aryldiazonium salts paved the way to innovative strategies for the attachment of aryl layers to metal oxide nanoparticles and nanodiamonds, and intercalation of clays. Interestingly, diazotized surfaces can easily trap nanoparticles and nanotubes while diazotized nanoparticles can be (electro)chemically reduced on electrode/materials surfaces as molecular compounds. Both strategies provided organized 2D surface assembled nanoparticles. In this review, aryldiazonium salts are highlighted as efficient coupling agents for many types of molecular, macromolecular and nanoparticulate species, therefore ensuring stability to colloids on the one hand, and the construction of composite materials and hybrid systems with robust and durable interfaces/interphases, on the other hand. The last section is dedicated to a selection of patents and industrial products based on aryldiazonium-modified nanomaterials. After nearly 160 years of organic chemistry, diazonium salts have entered a new, long and thriving era for the benefit of materials, colloids, and surface scientists. This tempts us to introduce the terminology of "diazonics" we define as the science and technology of aryldiazonium salt-derived materials.
