Abstract:Mass-fractionation enriches light elements and the lighter isotopes of each element at the solar surface, making a photosphere that is 91 percent H and 9 percent He. The solar interior consists mostly of elements that comprise 99 percent of ordinary meteorites (Fe, O, Ni, Si, S, Mg and Ca) elements made in the deep interior of a supernova. Solar energy arises from a series of nuclear reactions triggered by neutron-emission from the collapsed supernova core on which the Sun formed. Solar mass-fractionation, solar neutrinos, and the annual solar-wind outpouring of 3 E43 H atoms from the solar surface are by-products of solar luminosity.

Abstract:The Sun operates like a giant plasma diffuser that sorts lighter isotopes and elements to the solar surface. Measurements indicate that the interior of the Sun consists mostly of the same seven, even-numbered elements as ordinary meteorites: Iron, oxygen, nickel, silicon, sulfur, magnesium, and calcium. These ordinary elements compose clothing on the central neutron star that was produced at the core of the supernova that exploded here 5 billion years ago. Neutron emission generates most solar energy. Neutron-decay near the core produces Hydrogen ions that are accelerated upward by deep-seated magnetic fields. This is the carrier gas that maintains mass separation in the Sun. Like smoke, Hydrogen is a by-product from the solar furnace that powers the Sun. As smoke passes over catalytic converters in the flue of a high-efficiency furnace, most Hydrogen is fused into Helium during its upward journey. H-fusion makes less than 38 percent of solar energy. Each year 50 trillion tons of Hydrogen reach the solar surface and are flung off in the solar wind, with isotopes of other trace elements carefully sorted by mass. Hydrogen is smoke from the solar furnace, rather than its primary fuel.

Abstract:We study molecular nanostructures on the surface of a d_(x2-y2)-wave superconductor. We show that the interplay between the molecular nanostructure's internal excitation spectrum and quantum interference of the scattered host electrons leads to a series of novel effects in the local density of states. We demonstrate that these effects give insight into both the nature of the superconducting pairing correlations and of the intermolecular interactions.

Abstract:The solar chemical composition is an important ingredient in our understanding of the formation, structure, and evolution of both the Sun and our Solar System. Furthermore, it is an essential reference standard against which the elemental contents of other astronomical objects are compared. In this review, we evaluate the current understanding of the solar photospheric composition. In particular, we present a redetermination of the abundances of nearly all available elements, using a realistic new three-dimensional (3D), time-dependent hydrodynamical model of the solar atmosphere. We have carefully considered the atomic input data and selection of spectral lines, and accounted for departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) whenever possible. The end result is a comprehensive and homogeneous compilation of the solar elemental abundances. Particularly noteworthy findings are significantly lower abundances of C, N, O, and Ne compared to the widely used values of a decade ago. The new solar chemical composition is supported by a high degree of internal consistency between available abundance indicators, and by agreement with values obtained in the Solar Neighborhood and from the most pristine meteorites. There is, however, a stark conflict with standard models of the solar interior according to helioseismology, a discrepancy that has yet to find a satisfactory resolution.

Abstract:In this work, we compute the rates and numbers of different types of stars and phenomena (supernovae, novae, white dwarfs, merging neutron stars, black holes) that contributed to the chemical composition of the Solar System. During the Big Bang, only light elements formed, while all the heavy ones, from carbon to uranium and beyond, have since been created inside stars. Stars die and release the newly formed elements into the interstellar gas. This process is called 'chemical evolution'. In particular, we analyse the death rates of stars of all masses, whether they die quiescently or explosively. These rates and total star numbers are computed in the context of a revised version of the two-infall model for the chemical evolution of the Milky Way, which reproduces the observed abundance patterns of several chemical species, the global solar metallicity, and the current gas, stellar, and total surface mass densities relatively well. We also compute the total number of stars ever born and still alive as well as the number of stars born up to the formation of the Solar System with mass and metallicity like those of the Sun. This latter number accounts for all the possible existing Solar systems that can host life in the solar vicinity. We conclude that, among all the stars (from 0.8 to 100 M ⊙) that were born and died from the Big Bang up until the Solar System formation epoch and that contributed to its chemical composition, 93.00% were stars that died as single white dwarfs (without interacting significantly with a companion star) and originated in the mass range of 0.8–8 M ⊙, while 5.24% were neutron stars and 0.73% were black holes, both originating from core-collapse supernovae (M > 8 M ⊙); 0.64% were Type Ia supernovae and 0.40% were nova systems, both originating from the same mass range as the white dwarfs. The number of stars similar to the Sun born from the Big Bang up until the formation of the Solar System, with metallicity in the range 12+log(Fe/H)= 7.50 ± 0.04 dex, is ~31•10 7, and in particular our Sun is the ~2.61• 10 7-th star of this kind.

Abstract:Context. The chemical composition of the Sun is a fundamental yardstick in astronomy, relative to which essentially all cosmic objects are referenced. As such, having accurate knowledge of the solar elemental abundances is crucial for an extremely broad range of topics. Aims. We reassess the solar abundances of all 83 long-lived elements, using highly realistic solar modelling and state-of-the-art spectroscopic analysis techniques coupled with the best available atomic data and observations. Methods. The basis for our solar spectroscopic analysis is a three-dimensional (3D) radiative-hydrodynamical model of the solar surface convection and atmosphere, which reproduces the full arsenal of key observational diagnostics. New complete and comprehensive 3D spectral line formation calculations taking into account of departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) are presented for Na, Mg, K, Ca, and Fe using comprehensive model atoms with reliable radiative and collisional data. Our newly derived abundances for C, N, and O are based on a 3D non-LTE analysis of permitted and forbidden atomic lines as well as 3D LTE calculations for a total of 879 molecular transitions of CH, C 2 , CO, NH, CN, and OH. Previous 3D-based calculations for another 50 elements are re-evaluated based on updated atomic data, a stringent selection of lines, improved consideration of blends, and new non-LTE calculations available in the literature. For elements where spectroscopic determinations of the quiet Sun are not possible, the recommended solar abundances are revisited based on complementary methods, including helioseismology (He), solar wind data from the Genesis sample return mission (noble gases), sunspot observations (four elements), and measurements of the most primitive meteorites (15 elements). Results. Our new improved analysis confirms the relatively low solar abundances of C, N, and O obtained in our previous 3D-based studies: log ε C = 8.46 ± 0.04, log ε N = 7.83 ± 0.07, and log ε O = 8.69 ± 0.04. Excellent agreement between all available atomic and molecular indicators is achieved for C and O, but for N the atomic lines imply a lower abundance than for the molecular transitions for unknown reasons. The revised solar abundances for the other elements also typically agree well with our previously recommended values, with only Li, F, Ne, Mg, Cl, Kr, Rb, Rh, Ba, W, Ir, and Pb differing by more than 0.05 dex. The here-advocated present-day photospheric metal mass fraction is only slightly higher than our previous value, mainly due to the revised Ne abundance from Genesis solar wind measurements: X surface = 0.7438 ± 0.0054, Y surface = 0.2423 ± 0.0054, Z surface = 0.0139 ± 0.0006, and Z surface / X surface = 0.0187 ± 0.0009. Overall, the solar abundances agree well with those of CI chondritic meteorites, but we identify a correlation with condensation temperature such that moderately volatile elements are enhanced by ≈0.04 dex in the CI chondrites and refractory elements possibly depleted by ≈0.02 dex, conflicting with conventional wisdom of the past half-century. Instead, the solar chemical composition more closely resembles that of the fine-grained matrix of CM chondrites with the expected exception of the highly volatile elements. Conclusions. Updated present-day solar photospheric and proto-solar abundances are presented for 83 elements, including for all long-lived isotopes. The so-called solar modelling problem – a persistent discrepancy between helioseismology and solar interior models constructed with a low solar metallicity similar to that advocated here – remains intact with our revised solar abundances, suggesting shortcomings with the computed opacities and/or treatment of mixing below the convection zone in existing standard solar models. The uncovered trend between the solar and CI chondritic abundances with condensation temperature is not yet understood but is likely imprinted by planet formation, especially since a similar trend of opposite sign is observed between the Sun and solar twins.

Iron: A Key Element for Understanding the Origin and Evolution of Interstellar Dust

Abstract:The origin and depletion of iron differ from all other abundant refractory elements that make up the composition of the interstellar dust. Iron is primarily synthesized in Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and in core collapse supernovae (CCSN), and is present in the outflows from AGB stars. Only the latter two are observed to be sources of interstellar dust, since searches for dust in SN~Ia have provided strong evidence for the absence of any significant mass of dust in their ejecta. Consequently, more than 65% of the iron is injected into the ISM in gaseous form. Yet, ultraviolet and X-ray observations along many lines of sight in the ISM show that iron is severely depleted in the gas phase compared to expected solar abundances. The missing iron, comprising about 90% of the total, is believed to be locked up in interstellar dust. This suggests that most of the missing iron must have precipitated from the ISM gas by cold accretion onto preexisting silicate, carbon, or composite grains. Iron is thus the only element that requires most of its growth to occur outside the traditional stellar condensation sources. This is a robust statement that does not depend on our evolving understanding of the dust destruction efficiency in the ISM. Reconciling the physical, optical, and chemical properties of such composite grains with their many observational manifestations is a major challenge for understanding the nature and origin of interstellar dust.

Introducing the Sun and SEPs 1

Abstract:The structure of the Sun, with its energy generation and heating, creates convection and differential rotation of the outer solar plasma. This convection and rotation of the ionized plasma generates the solar magnetic field. This field and its variation spawn all of the solar activity: solar active regions, flares, jets, and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Solar activity provides the origin and environment for both the impulsive and gradual solar energetic particle (SEP) events. This chapter introduces the background environment and basic properties of SEP events, time durations, abundances, and solar cycle variations. We tend to think of the Sun as an image of its disk. Recent years have brought increasingly sophisticated images of that disk in the light of single spectral lines and images of active emissions from its surface and its corona with higher and higher spatial resolution. However, we have no such images of solar energetic particles (SEPs). In a photon-dominated discipline, SEPs are stealthy and obscure; they are invisible in the solar sky. While photons travel line-of-sight, SEPs are guided out to us along open magnetic field lines. We must measure, identify, and count SEPs directly one by one. Only in recent years have we overcome the limitations so our observations now begin to bear richer fruit. This is the story of that development. Solar energetic particles (SEPs) come as bursts of high-energy particles from the direction of the Sun lasting for hours or sometimes days. The particle energies range from about 10 keV (kilo electron volts) to relativistic energies of several GeV, particle speeds 90% of the speed of light. In addition to the dominant protons and electrons, all of the other chemical elements from He through Au and Pb have now been measured. The relative abundances of these elements and their isotopes have been a powerful new resource in our quest for understanding the physical processes of acceleration and interplanetary transport of SEPs which alter those abundances in distinctive ways. # The Author(s) 2021 D. It consists of gaseous, ionized plasma where the inner core (see Fig. 1.1) reaches temperatures of 15 million degrees Kelvin (MK) where some of the protons have enough energy to tunnel the Coulomb barrier of the nuclear charge. As they penetrate H, C, and N nuclei, they cause the nuclear reactions that catalyze the conversion of H into He. The energy released in this process is radiated and reabsorbed as it diffuses outward across the radiative zone, creating sufficient heat and pressure to balance the gravitational force trying to collapse the star. Abstract:Quantitative data on the solar wind, solar magnetic fields, solar eruptions, solar neutrinos, and on the planetary material orbiting the Sun all indicate the presence of an iron-rich solar interior and a neutron star at the core of the Sun. Solar magnetic fields are deep-seated remnants from the core and/or Bose-Einstein condensation of Fe-rich material into a rotating superconductor. Neutron emission from the core triggers a series of reactions that produce solar luminosity, the H carrier gas that maintains mass separation in the Sun, and an outpouring of 3 E43 H+ ions per year in the solar wind.

The Sun as a Prototype in the Study of Stellar Magnetic Activity

Abstract:The proximity of the Sun to the Earth allows detailed, spatially-resolved observations. The complexity of the solar atmosphere has not ceased to surprise us ever since the telescope, and in particular the spectrograph, has been used to observe the Sun. Details show up down to scales below an arc- second, while future high-resolution telescopes probably hold more surprises in store. Not only the high degree of structuring is surprising, but also the high temperature of the outer atmosphere (i.e. everything above the photosphere), reaching values in excess of 106K in the outermost regions. The atmospheric plasma is evidently non-radiatively heated by the dissipation of energy which is being delivered either actively or passively (or both) to the outer layers by the complex magnetic field which at the same time serves to confine the heated plasma. Observers structured the confusion contained in the observed phenomena by introducing names: chromosphere, coronal mass ejection, ephemeral region, facula, flare, granule, network, plage, pore, prominence, spicule, spot, umbra,… The list of terms is a long one indeed with new ones still being added. Continued observations revealed the solar cycle with its associated “butterfly diagram,” the differential rotation, etc. Observations of the “objects” which are described by these terms create the mental framework within which solar physicists communicate.

Abstract:Here it is shown how to find the interior structure of a variety of rock-and-iron planetary bodies by using the rock density and some aspects of the core density as known for the Earth and using a convection principle for the iron-rich core. Convection minimizes both the density and temperature gradients inside the core fluid. This is achieved if the density of the core fluid is close to pure iron melting density at the core-mantle boundary, and the density has the smallest value possible for iron-rich melt at the inner core boundary. The critical iron densities for both pure iron and iron with maximal light impurities were previously obtained utilizing Landau's theory of first order phase transitions with the most reliable experimental scaling. The planetary interior density is found by iteratively calculating the gravity and pressure in small radial steps. Moment of inertia factors are also calculated and agree well for the bodies for which we have accurate measurements: Moon, Mars and Mercury. Calculations are also made for the exoplanets Kepler-78b, K2-229b and Kepler-10b. All show iron-rich liquid in their cores. The lighter, solar objects are without an inner core, but the heaviest two exoplanets have a pure iron innermost core inside the inner core. The parameter range for a growing inner core in the radius-mass plane is calculated. The magnetic field following the growth of an inner core protects life on Earth, and similarly for exoplanets. This guides the selection of exoplanets to study in the search for life.

Abstract:The Sun encompasses planet Earth, supplies the heat that warms it, and even shakes it. The United Nation Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assumed that solar influence on our climate is limited to changes in solar irradiance and adopted the consensus opinion of a Hydrogen-filled Sun, the Standard Solar Model (SSM). They did not consider the alternative solar model and instead adopted another consensus opinion: Anthropogenic greenhouse gases play a dominant role in climate change. The SSM fails to explain the solar wind, solar cycles, and the empirical link of solar surface activity with Earth changing climate. The alternative solar model, that was molded from an embarrassingly large number of unexpected observations revealed by space-age measurements since 1959, explains not only these puzzles but also how closely linked interactions between the Sun and its planets and other celestial bodies induce turbulent cycles of secondary solar characteristics that significantly affect Earth climate.

Abstract:People usually smile when astrophysicists assert that we are sons of the stars, but human life confirms this sentence: about 65% of the mass of our body is made up of oxygen, carbon occurs in all organic life and is the basis of organic chemistry, nitrogen is an essential part of amino acids and nucleic acids, calcium is a major component of our bones. Moreover, phosphorus plays a major role in biological molecules such as DNA and RNA (where the chemical codes of life is written) and our blood carries oxygen to tissues by means of the hemoglobin (an iron pigment of red blood cells). All these elements have been created in stars. I just list some examples related to human body, but also common element such as aluminum, nickel, gold, silver and lead come from a pristine generation of stars. The abundances in the Solar System are in fact due to the mixing of material ejected from stars that polluted the Universe in different epochs before the Sun formation, occurred about 5 billion years ago, after the gravitational contraction of the proto-solar cloud. Low mass AGB stars (1<M/Msun<3) are among the most important polluters of the Milky Way, because of the strong winds eroding their chemically enriched envelopes. They are responsible for the nucleosynthesis of the main component of the cosmic s-elements.

Abstract:An analysis of the distribution and kinematics of interstellar material within 500 pc of the Sun leads to the conclusion that the galactic environment of the Sun changes with time. Consideration of evidence for interstellar gas interacting with the solar wind implies that these variations may alter the interplanetary environment of the Earth. The events causing the 10Be spikes 33,000 years and 60,000 years ago in the Antarctic ice record must be associated with the Local Fluff cloud complex, possibly due to solar encounters with structures with subparsec scale sizes. An encounter with "dense" interstellar cloud material could attenuate the solar L-alpha flux by as much as 70%, modify mesospheric chemistry, modify the magnetosphere-solar wind coupling, and alter the global electrical circuit. Prior to the entry of the Sun into the Local Fluff cloud complex, within the past 200,000 years, the galactic environment of the Sun differed radically from the environment prevailing today and expected for the near future.

Abstract:Abstract Much of our understanding of the internal structure of the Sun derives from so-called standard theoretical solar models. Unfortunately, none of those models agrees completely with observations. The discrepancy is commonly associated with chemical abundance, and has led to what is now called the solar abundance problem, the resolution of which has previously been out of sight. But now the Borexino Collaboration, which recently announced measurements of the pp-chain solar neutrinos, are optimistic that they will be able to measure the flux ΦCNO of the neutrinos emitted by the relatively weak CNO cycle. Since C, N, and O constitute the majority of the heavy elements, that measurement will permit a crucial determination of the heavy-element abundance Zc in the Sun’s energy-generating core, thereby shedding important light on the problem. To accomplish that determination, a robust relation between Zc and ΦCNO will be required. That relation is $Z_{ m c}= 0.400, Phi _{ m CNO}$, where ΦCNO is in units of 1010 cm−2 s−1.

Abstract:Our Sun, like all stars, formed within a cold molecular cloud. Astronomical observations and theory provide considerable detail into this process. Yet cosmochemical observations of short-lived radionuclides in primitive meteorites, in particular 60Fe, provide unequivocal evidence that the early solar system inherited fresh nucleosynthetic material from the core of a hot, massive star, almost certainly ejected in a supernova explosion. I give a short introduction to the fields of star formation and meteoritics and discuss how the reconciliation of their disparate clues to our origin places strong constraints on the environment of the solar birthplace. Direct injection of supernova ejecta into a protoplanetary disc or a dense molecular core is unlikely since their small sizes require placement unusually close to the massive star. Lower density molecular cloud clumps can capture more ejecta but the radionuclides decay during the slow gravitational collapse. The most likely scenario is on the largest scales via the formation of enriched molecular clouds at the intersection of colliding supernova bubbles in spiral arms.

Abstract:Measurements by the Genesis mission have shown that solar wind oxygen is depleted in the rare isotopes, 17O and 18O, by approximately 80 and 100‰, respectively, relative to Earth’s oceans, with inferred photospheric values of about −60‰ for both isotopes. Direct astronomical measurements of CO absorption lines in the solar photosphere have previously yielded a wide range of O isotope ratios. Here, we reanalyze the line strengths for high-temperature rovibrational transitions in photospheric CO from ATMOS FTS data, and obtain an 18O depletion of δ18O = −50 ± 11‰ (1σ). From the same analysis we find a carbon isotope ratio of δ13C = −48 ± 7‰ (1σ) for the photosphere. This implies that the primary reservoirs of carbon on the terrestrial planets are enriched in 13C relative to the bulk material from which the solar system formed, possibly as a result of CO self-shielding or inheritance from the parent cloud.
