Abstract:This paper presents the results of experimental studies aimed at justifying the possibility of extending the autonomous operation of passive safety systems for the VVER reactor. During experiments conducted at IPPE JSC, two critical processes that significantly influence the effectiveness of these systems were examined: the generation of non-condensable gases and the accumulation of boric acid in the reactor core. On the large-scale GE-2 M test facility, an experiment was conducted to determine the maximum duration of a steam generator's operation in the absence of non-condensable gas removal from its tube bundle. Additionally, at the small-scale experimental facility investigated the solubility of boric acid in steam, which, in the event of an accident, exits the core, reducing the concentration of boric acid in the reactor. The research outcomes from these experimental facilities can be utilized to substantiate the functionality of VVER passive safety systems.
