Abstract:During the process of continuous collection of information in 3D space handwriting,connected strokes of part of characters appeares,which affectes the rate of characters recognition.To solve this problem,an approach of 3D space handwriting character recognition based on elimination of connected stroke is represented.3D space characters are flattened.Feature extraction of turning points and direction of strokes is performed.To avoid eliminating the wrong strokes,Support Vector Machine(SVM) is adopted to divide the unknown characters into 2 sections: connected-stroke characters and non-connected-stroke characters.The connected strokes are eliminated by using stroke writing features which put the trajectory of a 3D space character into a flat trajectory of the character.Character recognition is performed by using flat character classifier directly.Experimental results show that the effect of eliminating connected stroke using this approach is remarkable and a higher recognition rate can be obtained by using existed character library.

Abstract:We attempt to overcome the restriction of requiring a writing surface for handwriting recognition. In this study, we design a prototype of a stylus equipped with motion sensor, and utilizes gyroscopic and acceleration sensor reading to perform written letter classification using various deep learning techniques such as CNN and RNNs. We also explore various data augmentation techniques and their effects, reaching up to 86% accuracy.

Abstract:The main challenge in on-line handwritten character recognition in Indian lan- guage is the large size of the character set, larger similarity between different characters in the script and the huge variation in writing style. In this paper we propose a framework for on-line handwitten script recognition taking cues from speech signal processing literature. The framework is based on identify- ing strokes, which in turn lead to recognition of handwritten on-line characters rather that the conventional character identification. Though the framework is described for Devanagari script, the framework is general and can be applied to any language. The proposed platform consists of pre-processing, feature extraction, recog- nition and post processing like the conventional character recognition but ap- plied to strokes. The on-line Devanagari character recognition reduces to one of recognizing one of 69 primitives and recognition of a character is performed by recognizing a sequence of such primitives. We further show the impact of noise removal on on-line raw data which is usually noisy. The use of Fuzzy Direc- tional Features to enhance the accuracy of stroke recognition is also described. The recognition results are compared with commonly used directional features in literature using several classifiers.
Reconstructing Multi-Stroke Characters from Brain Signals Toward Generalizable Handwriting Brain-Computer Interfaces

Abstract:Handwriting Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) provides a promising communication avenue for individuals with paralysis. While English-based handwriting BCIs have achieved rapid typewriting with 26 lowercase letters (mostly containing one stroke each), it is difficult to extend to complex characters, especially those with multiple strokes and large character sets. The Chinese characters, including over 3500 commonly used characters with 10.3 strokes per character on average, represent a highly complex writing system. This paper proposes a Chinese handwriting BCI system, which reconstructs multi-stroke handwriting trajectories from brain signals. Through the recording of cortical neural signals from the motor cortex, we reveal distinct neural representations for stroke-writing and pen-lift phases. Leveraging this finding, we propose a stroke-aware approach to decode stroke-writing trajectories and pen-lift movements individually, which can reconstruct recognizable characters (accuracy of 86% with 400 characters). Our approach demonstrates high stability over 5 months, shedding light on generalized and adaptable handwriting BCIs.

Abstract:Handwritten character recognition is an ongoing research field that features machine learning, computer vision and pattern recognition. To do this, one scans a handwritten document and converts it into a simple text document. The basic Optical Character Recognition (OCR) process is to examine the text of a document and convert it into codes used for data processing. In this machine learning project, deep learning techniques were used to model a neural network that recognizes individual handwritten characters and handwritten numerals. To recognize them, a convolutional neural network (CNN) was built to train on alphabets and the digits datasets and further the predictions done by the trained model were visualized using OpenCV.

Abstract:Abstract: Recognizing handwritten characters is an extremely difficult task in the domains of pattern recognition and computer vision. It involves the use of a process that enables computers to identify and convert handwritten or printed characters, such as letters and numbers, into a digital format that is usable by the computer. Currently, the RNN-CNN hybrid algorithm is employed to predict handwritten text in images with an accuracy rate of 91.5%. However, the existing system can only recognize characters and words character-by-character and word-by-word. The proposed system aims to address this limitation by enabling line-byline recognition and the conversion of handwritten text to OCR. To achieve this, the system utilizes the GRU algorithm to predict the next letter in incomplete words. Furthermore, the IAM dataset, consisting of 135,000 annotated sentences, is utilized to detect and rectify spelling errors in texts.

Abstract:Given the presence of handwritten documents in human transactions, including email sorting, bank checks, and automating procedures, handwritten characters recognition (HCR) of documents has been invaluable to society. Handwritten Chinese characters (HCC) can be divided into offline and online categories. Online HCC recognition (HCCR) involves the trajectory movement of the pen tip for expressing linguistic content. In contrast, offline HCCR involves analyzing and categorizing the sample binary or grayscale images of characters. As recognition technology develops, academics’ interest in Chinese character recognition has continuously increased, as it significantly affects social and economic development. Recent development in this area is promising. However, the recognition accuracy of offline HCCR is still a sophisticated challenge owing to their complexity and variety of writing styles. With the advancement of deep learning, convolutional neural network (CNN)-based algorithms have demonstrated distinct benefits in offline HCCR and have achieved outstanding results. In this review, we aim to show the different HCCR methods for tackling the complexity and variability of offline HCC writing styles. This paper also reviews different activation functions used in offline HCCR and provides valuable assistance to new researchers in offline Chinese handwriting recognition by providing a succinct study of various methods for recognizing offline HCC.

Abstract:Handwriting recognition refers to the identification of written characters. Handwriting recognition has become an acute research area in recent years for the ease of access of computer science. In this paper primarily discussed On-line and Off-line handwriting recognition methods for Arabic words which are often used among then across the Middle East and North Africa People. Arabic word online handwriting recognition is a very challenging task due to its cursive nature. Because of the characteristic of the whole body of the Arabic script, namely connectivity between the characters, thereby the segmentation of An Arabic script is very difficult. In this paper we introduced an Arabic script multiple classifier system for recognizing notes written on a Starboard. This Arabic script multiple classifier system combines one off-line and on-line handwriting recognition systems. The Arabic script recognizers are all based on Hidden Markov Models but vary in the way of preprocessing and normalization. To combine the Arabic script output sequences of the recognizers, we incrementally align the word sequences using a norm string matching algorithm. The Arabic script combination we could increase the system performance over the excellent character recognizer by about 3%. The proposed technique is also the necessary step towards character recognition, person identification, personality determination where input data is processed from all perspectives.

Abstract:Handwriting is a common, natural form of communication for humans, and therefore it is useful to utilize this modality as a means of input to machines. One well-known method of classifying individual characters or words is template matching. We demonstrate a template-based system for online character recognition where the number of representative templates is determined automatically. These templates can be viewed as representing different styles of writing a particular character. The templates are then used as a reference for efficient classification using decision trees. Overall, our classifier achieves an 86.9% accuracy on a set of 17,928 alphanumeric characters (36 classes; 10 digits and 26 lowercase letters) with a throughput of over 8 characters per second on a 296 MHz Sun UltraSparc.

Abstract:Recently, eye-writing has been used as a novel language communication method, in which the paths of eye movement are detected for character recognition. However, instability of the eyes causes gaze points to form a character with a non-uniform shape and distinct writing style across participants. The non-uniformity affected the performance of the recognition algorithms and set back the applicability of eye-writing. In this paper root translation and dilated causal convolutional (DCC) layers are utilized to model the non-uniformity in eye-writing patterns. The root translation shifted the pattern to have uniform root gaze points by obtaining the difference between the initial gaze points and subsequent gaze points. The translated patterns were used to train the temporal convolution network (TCN) having three stacked DCC layers with different filter and dilation factors. The DCC layers extract temporal dependencies in the pattern by convolving a particular gaze point with a certain previous gaze point within its receptive field. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a dataset of 36 eye-writing characters comprising 26 English and 10 Arabic numerals was recorded from 20 participants using the Tobii eye tracker. The evaluation results depicted that our proposed method achieved an accuracy of 96.20% on our newly designed English and Arabic numeral datasets. The proposed method outperforms conventional methods by achieving 98.81%, 97.76%, and 93.51% on HideMyGaze, Complex gaze gesture, and Isolated Japanese Katakana datasets, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract Handwritten character recognition (HCR) is the detection of characters from images, documents and other sources and changes them in machine-readable shape for further processing. The accurate recognition of intricate-shaped compound handwritten characters is still a great challenge. Recent advances in convolutional neural network (CNN) have made great progress in HCR by learning discriminatory characteristics from large amounts of raw data. In this paper, CNN is implemented to recognize the characters from a test dataset. The main focus of this work is to investigate CNN capability to recognize the characters from the image dataset and the accuracy of recognition with training and testing. CNN recognizes the characters by considering the forms and contrasting the features that differentiate among characters. Our CNN implementation is experimented with the dataset NIST to obtain the accuracy of handwritten characters. Test result provides that an accuracy of 92.91% accuracy is obtained on 200 images with a training set of 1000 images from NIST.
Handwriting Recognition under Natural Writing Habits based on A Low-cost Inertial Sensor

Abstract:Compared with human-computer interaction in terms of optical and speech signals, inertial sensor-based handwriting recognition shows more competitive due to low power consumption, independence of environment, and portable wearing. However, recognizing handwriting characters under usual habits in continuous writing motion is quite challenging as it is hard to accurately extract data segments of characters from a continuous inertial data stream. Considering the cumbersome manual annotation of segmentation points in inertial data streams, we propose a trajectory upheaval network (TUN), which can be trained on unlabeled data and achieve character segmentation in successive writing motions. Furthermore, considering that individual writing habits lead to various stroke orders and ill-formed writing, we then propose a cooperation-competition learning (CCL) model, which fuses the features of writing trajectory morphology and the inertial dynamic signal, to recognize the semantics of these character motions with successes. The CCL guides a competing mechanism of the two features to avoid a collaborative degradation phenomenon while their mutual learning promotes the efficient fusion of two features to achieve optimal recognition performance. The extensive experiments illustrate that our TUN-CCL model achieves the final recognition accuracy of 98.6% for 62 English-number characters without requirements on stroke order and writing habits. The comparative experiment and ablation experiment validate the effectiveness of our method, which exhibits potential application prospects in human-computer interaction.

Abstract:This paper proposes a method to recognize stroke orders of on-line handwritten Chinese characters based on analyzing both spatial and temporal information. A novel control-point-based analysis method is presented for spatial information analysis to match strokes with various shapes and styles. Its computation complexity is much lower than image correlation method and is suitable for applications on mobile devices. For temporal information analysis, Hidden Markov Model is adopted and a proposed rectification method is integrated to find the optimal pair-wise matching result of stroke sequences. Experimental results proved the effectiveness of the proposed method. The verification rate is 99.6% on the test set.

Abstract:Handwriting recognition has been a heated topic over years. Due to the development of deep learning, a lot of research has been done to apply convolutional neural network (CNN) model to this task, which have achieved outstanding accuracy. Instead of focusing merely on CNN models, this article takes the features of Chinese handwritten character into consideration and manages to extract the information of the stroke order of the online handwriting recognition. To achieve this, two methods are proposed: (1) Design a two-branch model combining CNN and recurrent neural network (RNN);(2) Give a new channel division strategy. Also, the task of advanced prediction of the character which little research has been worked on is the key point. With the information of stroke order and some data augmentation strategy, methods proposed have achieved satisfying results.

Abstract:The potential uses of cursive optical character recognition, commonly known as OCR, in a number of industries, particularly document digitization, archiving, even language preservation, have attracted a lot of interest lately. In the framework of optical character recognition (OCR), the goal of this research is to provide a thorough understanding of both cutting-edge methods and the unique difficulties presented by Indic scripts. A thorough literature search was conducted in order to conduct this study, during which time relevant publications, conference proceedings, and scientific files were looked for up to the year 2023. As a consequence of the inclusion criteria that were developed to concentrate on studies only addressing Handwritten OCR on Indic scripts, 53 research publications were chosen as the process's outcome. The review provides a thorough analysis of the methodology and approaches employed in the chosen study. Deep neural networks, conventional feature-based methods, machine learning techniques, and hybrid systems have all been investigated as viable answers to the problem of effectively deciphering Indian scripts, because they are famously challenging to write. To operate, these systems require pre-processing techniques, segmentation schemes, and language models. The outcomes of this methodical examination demonstrate that despite the fact that Hand Scanning for Indic script has advanced significantly, room still exists for advancement. Future research could focus on developing trustworthy models that can handle a range of writing styles and enhance accuracy using less-studied Indic scripts. This profession may advance with the creation of collected datasets and defined standards.

This paper presents an automated approach for Arabic characters segmentation and recognition. The proposed methodology explores character's boundaries based on their geometric features, prior to their recognition. However, due to uncertainty and without dictionary support few characters are over-divided. To expand the productivity of the proposed methodology a hybrid neural model (HNN) is proposed. The model is composed of trained MLP and RBF networks to assist the character's boundary recognition process. For reasonable examination, only benchmark dataset is utilised. Abstract:OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is a technology that offers comprehensive alphanumeric recognition of handwritten and printed characters at electronic speed by merely scanning the document. Recently, the understanding of visual data has been termed Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR). Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) is the OCR module that can convert scans of handwritten or printed characters into ASCII text. ASCII data is the standard format for data encoding in electronic communication. ASCII assigns standard numeric values to letters, numeral, symbols, white-spaces and other characters. In more technical terms, OCR is the process of using an electronic device to transform 2-Dimensional textual information into machine-encoded text. Anything that contains text both machine written or handwritten can be scanned either through a scanner or just simply a picture of the text is enough for the recognition system to distinguish the text. The goal of this papers is to show the results of a Convolutional Neural Network model which has been trained on National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) dataset containing over a 100,000 images. The network learns from the features extracted from the images and use it to generate the probability of each class to which the picture belongs to. We have achieved an accuracy of 90.54% with a loss of 2.53%.

Abstract:There are many applications of the handwritten character recognition (HCR) approach still exist. Reading postal addresses in various states contains different languages in any union government like India. Bank check amounts and signature verification is one of the important application of HCR in the automatic banking system in all developed countries. The optical character recognition of the documents is comparing with handwriting documents by a human. This OCR is used for translation purposes of characters from various types of files such as image, word document files. The main aim of this research article is to provide the solution for various handwriting recognition approaches such as touch input from the mobile screen and picture file. The recognition approaches performing with various methods that we have chosen in artificial neural networks and statistical methods so on and to address nonlinearly divisible issues. This research article consisting of various approaches to compare and recognize the handwriting characters from the image documents. Besides, the research paper is comparing statistical approach support vector machine (SVM) classifiers network method with statistical, template matching, structural pattern recognition, and graphical methods. It has proved Statistical SVM for OCR system performance that is providing a good result that is configured with machine learning approach. The recognition rate is higher than other methods mentioned in this research article. The proposed model has tested on a training section that contained various stylish letters and digits to learn with a higher accuracy level. We obtained test results of 91% of accuracy to recognize the characters from documents. Finally, we have discussed several future tasks of this research further.
Stroke Sequence-Dependent Deep Convolutional Neural Network for Online Handwritten Chinese Character Recognition

Abstract:We propose a novel model, called stroke sequence-dependent deep convolutional neural network (SSDCNN), which uses the stroke sequence information and eight-directional features of Chinese characters for online handwritten Chinese character recognition (OLHCCR). SSDCNN learns the representation of OLHCCs by incorporating the natural sequence information of the strokes. Furthermore, it naturally incorporates the eight-directional features. First, SSDCNN inputs the stroke sequence and transforms it into stacks of feature maps following the writing order of the strokes. Second, the fixed-length, stroke sequence-dependent representations of OLHCC are derived through convolutional, residual, and max-pooling operations. Third, the stroke sequence-dependent representation is combined with the eight-directional features via a number of fully connected neural network layers. Finally, the Chinese characters are recognized using a softmax classifier. The SSDCNN is trained in two stages: 1) the whole architecture is pretrained using the training data until the performance converges to an acceptable degree. 2) The stroke sequence-dependent representation is combined with the eight-directional features by a fully connected neural network and a softmax layer for further training. The model was experimentally evaluated on the OLHCCR competition tasks of International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) 2013. The recognition error was a maximum 58.28% lower in SSDCNN than in a model using the eight-directional features alone (5.13% versus 2.14%). Owing to its high accuracy (97.86%), the proposed SSDCNN reduced the recognition error by approximately 18.0% as compared with that of the winning system in the ICDAR 2013 competition. SSDCNN integrated with an adaptation mechanism, called the SSDCNN+Adapt model, and reached a new state-of-the-art (SOTA) stan-ard with an accuracy of 97.94%. The SSDCNN exploits the stroke sequence information to learn high-quality OLHCC representations. Moreover, the learned representation and the classical eight-directional features complement each other within the SSDCNN architecture.
