Abstract:Late Middle Cambrian trilobites are described from two localities in northwestern Tasmania. Twenty-four trilobite taxa are documented. The 15 agnostoid species include Paraclavagnostus longus sp. nov. which is placed in the Utagnostinae, a new subfamily of the Clavagnostidae. The nine polymeroid species include a new member of the Rhyssometopidae, Tasmana truncata gen. et sp. nov, Three other new species of polymeroids are erected: Fuchouia tasmaniensis, Nepea delicata and Nepea hellyeri. Both faunas correlate with the Lejopyge laevigata Zone on the northern Australia biostratigraphic scale, possibly with the L. laevigata II Zone. When compared with Hunan, China, correlation is with the upper part of the Lejopyge laevigata Zone, and particularly with the lower part of the Proagnostus bulbus Zone.

Abstract:The discovery of the Fezouata biota in the latest Tremadocian of southeastern Morocco has significantly changed our understanding of the early Phanerozoic radiation. The shelly fossil record shows a well-recognized pattern of macroevolutionary stasis between the Cambrian Explosion and the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, but the rich soft-bodied Fezouata biota paints a different evolutionary picture. The Fezouata assemblage includes a considerable component of Cambrian holdovers alongside a surprising number of crown group taxa previously unknown to have evolved by the Early Ordovician. Study of the Fezouata biota is in its early stages, and future discoveries will continue to enrich our view of the dynamics of the early Phanerozoic radiation and of the nature of the fossil record. Abstract:Marianian (Cambrian Series 2) trilobites from the area between Totanés and Noez (Central Iberian Zone) are described and their biostratigraphical significance is discussed. The trilobites come from eight localities and can be divided into two main assemblages: the first is characterised by Serrodiscus bellimarginatus , Chelediscus cf. garzoni , Atops calanus , Pseudatops reticulatus and indeterminate polymeroid trilobites. The second assemblage consists of Serrodiscus bellimarginatus , Triangulaspis cf. fusca , Andalusiana palaciosi n. sp., Termierella totanesensis n. sp. and Acanthomicmacca sp. Both fossil associations indicate a late Marianian age in the regional stratigraphic scheme for the Cambrian of the Iberian Peninsula, as Serrodiscus , Chelediscus and Pseudatops have been recorded from the upper Marianian substage, while Triangulaspis , Andalusiana , Termierella and Acanthomicmacca are indicative of the middle to upper Marianian. The taxa considered here have regional and intercontinental correlation potential. The presence of the globally distributed genus Serrodiscus allows correlation in the Cambrian Series 2. The first assemblage, composed of Serrodiscus , Chelediscus , Atops and Pseudatops , has been reported from the Ossa-Morena Zone, Avalonia, Laurentia, Baltica and Siberia, improving the correlation between these regions. The second assemblage of Andalusiana , Termierella , Triangulaspis and Serrodiscus is comparable to other assemblages from the Ossa-Morena Zone, the Iberian Chains and Morocco, with Triangulaspis also reported from Newfoundland and Siberia. In addition, the proposal of the ISCS regarding the co-occurrence of Hebediscus , Calodiscus , Serrodiscus and Triangulaspis as a potential marker for the base of the Cambrian Stage 4 may imply that the upper Marianian of Iberia could be approximately correlated with the base of this stage.

First occurrence of well-preserved Ordovician trilobites of the family Olenidae from Africa

Abstract:Here we describe the first articulated olenid trilobite specimens recovered from the lowermost Fezouata Shale Formation (lower Tremadocian, Ordovician) of Morocco. Prior to the discovery of this sample, only two partial olenid trilobite specimens had been found from this part of the rock record. The specimens are well preserved enough to confidently identify as Leptoplastides salteri (Callaway, 1877), extending the species geographic range from Avalonia into Gondwana. We argue that the Moroccan occurrences formerly referred to as "Beltella sp." in the literature are likely to be those of L. salteri. This species is the only olenid trilobite known from African Gondwana.

Abstract:The Fezouata Biota (Morocco) is a Burgess Shale-type (BST) assemblage that provides a wealth of information on Early Ordovician ecosystems. Much work has been done to compare the preservation of the Fezouata Biota to other BSTs. However, studies investigating preservation variations within the Fezouata Biota are rare. Here, we use probabilities to investigate the preservation of various ecological categories of Fezouata eumetazoans. Complex taphonomic processes and phylum-specific constraints have led to the better preservation of predators/scavengers in this biota. However, no differences in preservation are observed between vagile and sessile taxa. Importantly, Tremadocian taxa are better preserved than Floian ones. As such, this study highlights the gradual closure of the BST window of preservation in the Zagora region of Morocco and constitutes a benchmark for future palaeoecological and evolutionary studies on the Fezouata Biota.

Abstract:The Eager Formation (Cambrian Stage 4) of the Cranbrook area, British Columbia, contains abundant, sometimes beautifully preserved, trilobites and rare non-biomineralized taxa. Trilobites were first reported just over a century ago but have received little research attention, resulting in uncertainty in the number and identity of species within the assemblage and ambiguity in the age of the fauna. The trilobites of the Eager Formation in the Cranbrook area are described herein based largely upon material collected in 2015. A minimum of eight (and perhaps up to 11) trilobite species are recognized. The four species of olenelloids (Olenellus santuccii Webster n. sp., Olenellus? schofieldi, Mesonacis eagerensis, and Wanneria cranbrookense Webster n. sp.) are by far the most abundant elements of the fauna. At least two, and perhaps as many as five, species of dorypygid are present, as are two species of "ptychoparioids". Paucity and poor preservational quality of specimens mean that the various dorypygid and "ptychoparioid" species are left in open nomenclature. Trilobite diversity in the Cranbrook Lagerstätte is comparable to that within other Lagerstätten from Cambrian Stage 4 (Series 2) of Laurentia. The diversity and abundance of trilobites, combined with biostratinomic and trace fossil data, suggest that the assemblage is autochthonous and/or parautochthonous, and that the local environment was at least periodically able to support a "typical" benthic trilobite community. The age of the Cranbrook Lagerstätte is constrained to lie within the middle Dyeran Stage of Laurentia, within what was a substantial stratigraphic gap in the distribution of Burgess Shale-type Lagerstätten. Abstract:Lower Devonian (Pragian-Emsian) reefal deposits of Sierra Morena (SW Spain) contain locally abundant calcified cyanobacteria, calcareous algae, and various microfossils including foraminifers. Calcified cyanobacteria are represented by Girvanella spp. A–C, which form crusts and clumps of various shapes. Supposed green algae (?Dasycladales) are represented by a new genus with one new species, Bediaella hispanica gen. et sp. nov. Algospongia include Vasicekia margaritula (Saltovskaya, 1986) n. comb. Microproblematica are represented by Rothpletzella sp. The studied assemblages indicate photic and warm conditions in a shallow and well-agitated environment with normal salinity, and probably mirror episodes of shallowing due to eustatic sea level fluctuations.

Morphological disparity trends in Devonian trilobites from North Africa

Abstract:The Devonian was a time of drastic environmental change that shaped the morphology of trilobites. This study aims to investigate their morphological evolution and to show the influence of some abiotic and biotic factors (bathymetry, feeding habits and visual abilities) on their shape. A dataset was compiled to investigate the shape of three structures (cephalon as a whole, central part of the cephalon, and pygidium) of Devonian trilobites from North Africa, using a geometric morphometric approach. Based on empirical morphospaces, the morphological changes were quantified through the Devonian stages. The results reveal important variations in the morphological disparity of the glabella shape, the facial suture location, the pygidial length and the presence of spines. In the Lochkovian, morphological disparity was low, subsequently increased in the Pragian with numerous innovations, and reached a maximum in the Emsian. If the morphospace occupancy remained until the Eifelian, a severe loss of disparity occurred in the Givetian, a time known for important environmental changes. Disparity then remained low in the Late Devonian. The shapes inherited from the Silurian persisted throughout the Devonian whereas Pragian novelties were most affected by losses. These persistent shapes were more versatile for environmental adaptation, helping those trilobites to survive the environmental events. Similarly, the trilobite orders that survived Devonian events had a wide morphological spectrum and were better adapted to withstand environmental change.

Abstract:Recent fieldwork has uncovered three new localities from the Lower Devonian of Mezquita de Loscos (Teruel Province, Spain) with further plant mega-fossils and the first record of micro-fossils. Such plant remains have been interpreted as belonging to a basal euphyllophyte, Taeniocrada-like stems, Hostinella genus and paired sporangia. Fourteen spore taxa were recovered, including Ambitisporites, Aneurospora, Brochotriletes, Chelinospora, Emphanisporites, Gneudnaspora and Retusotriletres, among others. New evidence confirms a Lochkovian age for this outcrop and suggests that the plant diversity was more complex than originally documented.

Abstract:Mixed siliciclastic-carbonate deposits of Lower Devonian (Lochkovian-Emsian) age are exposed in the northeastern part of the Reggane Basin (Touat region). Based on lithological, sedimentological and palaeontological data, these deposits are subdivided into four distinct lithological units: Unit A characterises the Silurian-Devonian transitional zone; Unit B consists of a thick succession of Lochkovian-Pragian age, whereas Units C and D both document Emsian deposits. The studied section exhibits low to moderate ichnodiversity consisting of 14 ichnotaxa: Arenicolites isp., Chondrites isp., Curvolithus multiplex , Lockeia siliquaria , Monomorphichnus isp., Neonereites bisserialis , Neonereites uniserialis , Ophiomorpha isp., Palaeophycus isp., Planolites isp., Psilonichnus upsilon , Skolithos linearis, S. verticalis, and Thalassinoides isp. Both Curvolithus multiplex and Psilonichnus upsilon are documented for the first time from Palaeozoic deposits of the Saharan platform. These ichnofaunas are commonly ascribed to the Skolithos and Cruziana ichnofacies. Five distinct ichnoassemblages (Ichnoassemblages A to E) were defined, reflecting palaeoenvironmental changes from the foreshore to upper offshore zones, with frequent storm influence. Ichnofabric analysis of the section studied reveals six levels with different bioturbation intensities showing different palaeoecological conditions in various environmental settings (Monospecific Planolites , Lower combined Skolithos-Arenicolites , Combined Skolithos-Thalassinoides , Monospecific Skolithos, and Upper combined Skolithos-Arenicolites and Reburrowed Chondrites ichnofabrics). The vertical evolution of these deposits displays the successive deepening and shallowing trends recorded during the Lower Devonian in this area.

Abstract:The Faixa Nova-Cerrito I site, in the municipality of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, displays rock layers from the Hyperodapedon Assemblage Zone (AZ), Carnian age of 233.23 ± 0.73 Ma (based on data collected in the nearby and correlated 'Alemoa' area), Santa Maria Supersequence, Upper Triassic, Paraná Basin. The new postcranial remains studied are referred to as Dinosauriformes indet., Silesauridae indet., Gnathovorax cabreirai (Herrerasauridae), and a Chiniquodontidae cynodont, all collected between 1996 and 2002, during the Pro-Guaíba project. The identification of specific groups like silesaurids, herrerasaurids and chiniquodontids for the first time in this outcrop adds valuable nuances to the biostratigraphical framework of the Brazilian Upper Triassic record. These findings straighten the correlation of the basal layers of Faixa Nova-Cerrito I Site with other Hyperodapedon Acme Subzone outcrops and provide some insights on the diversity of the upper Teyumbaita -layers. Our result in part corroborates the current hypothesis for the subdivision of the Hyperodapedon AZ, but the probable silesaur occurrence within the Teyumbaita- layers does not yet indicate that those levels are equivalent to those from the Exaeretodon Subzone. Our results highlight the importance of even fragmentary specimens in biostratigraphy and diversity estimations.

Abstract:The ammonoids of the family Maenioceratidae from Givetian sedimentary rocks of the Anti-Atlas (Morocco) are investigated. The study is based on new collections stored in the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin. The genera Maenioceras Schindewolf, 1933 and Afromaenioceras Göddertz, 1987 are revised; the genus Trimaenioceras is newly described. Abstract:The Middle Jurassic terebratulide brachiopods from the Jordan Valley, northwestern Jordan, are herein revised and systematically described and new taxa are added to the faunal list. A new genus and species Jordanithyris ardainensis gen. et sp. nov., is introduced from the upper Bathonian (Hamam Formation) and lower Callovian (Mughanniyya Formation) of the Arda section. In the upper Bathonian Hamam Formation (consisting of limestone, dolomite, alternating sandstone, and marlstone beds), Ptyctothyris quillyensis occurs. The assemblage Arabatia bihinensis, Ectyphoria sinaiensis, Ptyctothyris quillyensis, Dorsoplicathyris dorsoplicata, and Tubithyris jurayfahiensis is recorded in the lower Callovian limestone beds with marlstone interbeds of the Mughanniyya Formation. Brachiopods of the Jordanian Hamam and Mughanniyya formations can be correlated with the fauna of the Aroussiah Formation in Sinai and the Zohar and Matmor formations in southern Israel. The sedimentary environment is interpreted as the protected shallow inner shelf, and nutrient rich habitat resulting in high faunal diversity. The high degree of endemism of this fauna is yet another confirmation of the representative pronounced Middle Jurassic endemism along the southern Tethyan margin of the Ethiopian Province.

Conserved exopodite morphology in three-dimensionally preserved trilobites from the Walcott-Rust Quarry (Mohawkian, Ordovician) of New York, USA

Abstract:Trilobites were extremely abundant and diverse euarthropods from the Paleozoic Era, but our understanding of their non-biomineralized ventral morphology is restricted to localities with exceptional fossil preservation. The Ordovician-aged Walcott-Rust Quarry in New York State preserves exceptional trilobite fossils as calcite casts in three-dimensions with little to no deformation, providing a valuable view of their ventral morphology. Appendages of the two most abundant trilobites, Ceraurus pleurexanthemus and Flexicalymene senaria, have been known for over 150 years but the original preparation of the specimens as thin sections has led to significant disagreement about their anatomy. Ceraruus pleurexanthemus is more abundant in the thin section collections (157 specimens) and features nearly complete appendages including a subtriangular protopodite with stud-like gnathobases along the medial edge and long endites ventrally. The exopodite consists of a long proximal article bearing dumbbell-shaped lamellae (in cross section) and a shorter distal article, closely resembling that of the cheirurid Anacheirurus adserai from the Lower Ordovician Fezouata Shale biota of Morocco. The appendages of F. senaria (37 specimens) are less well preserved. The exopodite bears up to 40 dumbbell shaped lamellae (in cross section) and is proportionally longer relative to the endopodite of C. pleurexanthemus. The close morphological similarity observed between the exopodites of C. pleurexanthemus and A. adersai, despite originating from paleogeographically distant latitudes and temporally separated by over ca. 20 million years, shows that the proposed "Cambrian type" exopodite persisted through the majority of the Ordovician. The morphology of the endopodites between C. pleurexanthemus and A. adersai is more variable when compared to the organization of the exopodites, may reflect selective pressures from locomotion and feeding between these species.

Abstract:The trilobite faunas that occur with the Steptoean Positive Isotope Carbon Excursion (SPICE) at Smithfield Canyon, Utah, have been reported, but not illustrated. Given the importance of the SPICE at this section for international correlations, the trilobites from new collections from the upper Nounan Dolomite to lower St. Charles Formation at Smithfield Canyon are reported herein and integrated with the previously reported taxa. Trilobite assemblages indicate that the upper Cedaria to the Ellipsocephaloides biozones (Miaolingian Series, Guzhangian Stage to Furongian Series, Jiangshanian Stage) are present stratigraphically below or above the SPICE. Some of the taxa reported herein may represent new species, but they are not represented by well-enough preserved specimens and are left in open nomenclature. However, Kingstonia smithfieldensis n. sp. and Bromella utahensis n. sp. are named on the basis of common and well-preserved specimens. New carbon isotope data from Smithfield Canyon from an overlapping section of the lower St. Charles Formation, that add to the overall shape of the SPICE curve, are presented. The new δ 13 C values above the Elvinia Biozone range from –0.36‰ to +1.5‰, confirming that the SPICE concludes within the Elvinia Biozone. The Callovian rocks (Mughanniyya Formation) of the Tel el Dhahab section has allowed recognising two new terebratulide taxa: Kutchithyris simoni sp. nov. and Trigonithyris wilsoni sp. nov, which are formally described herein. Additionally, three terebratulide species: Bihenithyris barringtoni, Ptyctothyris daghaniensis, and Sphriganaria cardioides are reported for the first time from Jordan, all of them recorded together Bihenithyris weiri, a more widespread taxa in the Ethiopian Province. The Callovian Mughanniyya Formation of northwest Jordan is dominated by highly fossiliferous limestone beds intercalated with marlstones deposited on a low angle carbonate ramp in a shallow protected, inner shelf setting. Brachiopods of the Jordanian Mughanniyya Formation can be correlated with the Callovian brachiopod faunas of the Aroussiah Formation in Sinai and the Zohar and Matmor formations in southern Israel. The high degree of endemism of the terebratulide brachiopods under study here is yet another confirmation of the pronounced Middle Jurassic endemism along the southern Tethyan margin of the Ethiopian Province.
