Abstract:The Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched as a world-wide international collaboration hosted by CERN. Its goal is to push the field to the next energy frontier beyond LHC, increasing by an order of magnitude the mass of particles that could be directly produced, and decreasing by an order of magnitude the subatomic distances to be studied. The FCC study covers two accelerators, namely, an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh) and a highest luminosity, high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee). Both rings are hosted in the same 100 km tunnel infrastructure, replicating the CERN strategy for LEP and LHC, i.e. developing a lepton and a hadron ring sharing the same tunnel. This paper is devoted to the FCC-hh and summarizes the key features of the FCC-hh accelerator design, performance reach, and underlying technologies. The material presented in this paper builds on the conceptual design report published in 2019, and extends it, including also the progress made and the results achieved since then.

Abstract:In this white paper for the 2021 Snowmass process, we give a description of the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) project and its physics program. The paper summarizes and updates the discussion submitted to the European Strategy on Particle Physics. After construction of an approximately 90 km tunnel, an electron-positron collider based on established technologies allows world-record instantaneous luminosities at center-of-mass energies from the Z resonance up to tt thresholds, enabling a rich set of fundamental measurements including Higgs couplings determinations at the sub percent level, precision tests of the weak and strong forces, and searches for new particles, including dark matter, both directly and via virtual corrections or mixing. Among other possibilities, the FCC-ee will be able to (i) indirectly discover new particles coupling to the Higgs and/or electroweak bosons up to scales around 7 and 50 TeV, respectively; (ii) perform competitive SUSY tests at the loop level in regions not accessible at the LHC; (iii) study heavy-flavor and tau physics in ultra-rare decays beyond the LHC reach, and (iv) achieve the best potential in direct collider searches for dark matter, sterile neutrinos, and axion-like particles with masses up to around 90 GeV. The tunnel can then be reused for a proton-proton collider, establishing record center-of-mass collision energy, allowing unprecedented reach for direct searches for new particles up to the around 50 TeV scale, and a diverse program of measurements of the Standard Model and Higgs boson, including a precision measurement of the Higgs self-coupling, and conclusively testing weakly-interacting massive particle scenarios of thermal relic dark matter.

Abstract:At CERN, each generation of particle accelerators led to the implementation of new geodetic, survey and alignment methodologies following the increasing accuracy requirements and the evolution of survey instruments. The Future Circular Collider (FCC), representing the next generation of particle accelerator, will in its turn require new development to ensure the accomplishment of the construction of the 91 km tunnel and the correct positioning of the machine components. Mainly because of larger size of the machine but also due to the design of its components, the existing geodetic infrastructure has to be extended and upgraded. The accelerator component alignment methodology currently used in not scalable, and the Machine Detector Interface alignment procedure must be revised including monitoring of the alignment. The article summarizes the different aspects of the geodetic, survey and alignment challenges that are currently investigated during the FCC feasibility studies.

Abstract:As the study of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) project progresses, the choice of the exact circumference of the accelerator tunnel becomes essential. It is defined by RF-related constraints, mainly the RF frequency of the FCC-hh, as well as the revolution frequency ratios with the hadron injector. It is shown firstly how favourable circumference options assuming the present LHC RF frequency have been identified and ranked from the RF point of view. Secondly, the entire frequency range of interest has been systematically scanned, assuming the possibility of operating SPS or LHC as the potential injector of FCC-hh. Considerations for the RF synchronization between injector and collider have been taken into account. Several options are studied in detail, amongst them the particularly attractive circumferences of 90478.6 m and 90837.7 m, and compared to the present working hypothesis of 90658.2 m. The results are analysed and rated from the point of view of flexibility and longitudinal beam dynamics.

Abstract:Circular colliders have the advantage of delivering collisions to multiple interaction points, which allow different detector designs to be studied and optimized - up to four for FCC-ee. On the one hand, the detectors must satisfy the constraints imposed by the invasive interaction region layout. On the other hand, the performance of heavy-flavour tagging, of particle identification, of tracking and particle-flow reconstruction, and of lepton, jet, missing energy and angular resolution, need to match the physics programme and the exquisite statistical precision offered by FCC-ee. During the FCC feasibility study (2021-2025), benchmark physics processes will be used to determine, via appropriate simulations, the requirements on the detector performance or design that must be satisfied to ensure that the systematic uncertainties of the measurements are commensurate with their statistical precision. The usage of the data themselves, in order to reach the challenging goals on the stability and on the alignment of the detector, in particular for the programme at and around the Z peak, will also be studied. In addition, the potential for discovering very weakly coupled new particles, in decays of Z or Higgs bosons, could motivate dedicated detector designs that would increase the efficiency for reconstructing the unusual signatures of such processes. These studies are a crucial input to the further optimization of the two concepts described in the Conceptual Design Report, CLD, and IDEA, and to the development of new concepts which might actually prove to be better adapted to the FCC-ee physics programme, or parts thereof.

Abstract:The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) is planning a Future Circular Collider (FCC), to be the successor of the current Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Significant civil engineering is required to accommodate the physics experiments and associated infrastructure. The 90.6 km, 5.5 m diameter tunnel will be situated in the Geneva region, straddling the Swiss-French border. Civil engineering studies are to incorporate the needs of both the FCC lepton collider (FCC-ee) and the FCC hadron collider (FCC-hh), as the tunnel will host both machines successively.

Impact of beam asymmetries at the Future Circular Collider e+e-

Abstract:In this paper we present detailed simulations with asymmetric initial beam settings in the context of the proposed Future Circular Collider e+e- (FCC-ee) using the Xsuite framework. We compare simulated equilibrium bunch sizes and luminosities against an already existing analytical model, which shows remarkably good agreement for realistic small perturbations. We investigate the longitudinal top-up injection, the currently preferred injection scheme for the FCC-ee, using self-consistent simulations featuring beam-beam collisions with beamstrahlung and the injection process, for the first time. We present and assess the sensitivity and required precision of the nominal beam parameters in a potential real-life operation by providing first estimates of the tolerances in the initial asymmetry of several machine parameters, with respect to the 3D flip-flop mechanism, obtained from parameter scan simulations.

Abstract:FCC-ee, the lepton version of the Future Circular Collider (FCC), is a 100 Km future machine under study to be built at CERN. It acquires two experiments with a highest beam energy of 182.5 GeV. FCC-ee aims to operate at four different energies, with different luminosities to fulfil physics requirements. Beam-beam effects at such a high energy/luminosity machine are very challenging and require a deep understanding, especially in the presence of x-y coupling sources. Beam-beam effects include the beamstrahlung process, which limits the beam lifetime at high energies, as well as dynamic effects at the Interaction point (IP) which include changes in the beta functions and emittances. In this report, we will define the beam-beam effects and their behaviours in the FCC-ee highest energy lattice after introducing x-y coupling in the ring.

Abstract:In 2022, the FCC Feasibility Study management mandated a working group to analyse the best configuration of the FCC-ee tunnel in the arc regions, in view of the construction of a mock-up of the arc half-cell. One of the main and most challenging goals of the study, named FCC-ee Arc Half-Cell Mock-up Project, was to perform a preliminary investigation on the principles of supporting the Short-Straight Sections and dipoles of the half-cells, both for the booster and for the collider machines. This is an important input needed for the choice of the best configuration of the relative placement of the booster with respect to the collider. The structural stiffness, mass and stability of the supporting structures must be optimized to minimize the vibrations transmitted/transferred to the magnetic system of the accelerators by elements such as pumps, water cooling system, beam thermomechanical stresses, powering elements, etc. To perform the study, tools such as CAD software, FEM and analytical techniques were employed. This paper summarizes the preliminary design concepts and the results of the simulations performed.

Abstract:The FCC-ee impedance model is being constantly updated closely following the vacuum chamber design and parameters evolution. In particular, at present, a thicker NEG coating of 150 nm (instead of previous 100 nm) has been suggested by the vacuum experts, and a more realistic impedance model of the bellows has been investigated. Moreover, also the transverse impedance has been updated by considering the same sources as for the longitudinal case. Therefore, the FCC-ee impedance database is getting more complete and the impedance model is being refined. In this paper we describe the presently available machine coupling impedance in both longitudinal and transverse planes, and study the impedance-driven single bunch instabilities (with and without beam-beam interaction) for the new FCC-ee parameter set with 4 interaction points (IPs). The results are compared with the previously obtained ones and a further possible mitigation of the beam-beam head-tail instability (X-Z instability) is proposed.

Abstract:The collimation system of the Future Circular Collider, operating with leptons (FCC-ee), must protect not only the experiments against backgrounds, but also the machine itself from beam losses. With a 17.8 MJ stored energy of the electron and positron beams, they are highly destructive, and beam losses risk to cause damage or a quench of superconducting elements. Accurate collimation simulation tools and models are needed to design the collimation system and optimize the collimation performance, including magnetic tracking, synchrotron radiation and optics tapering, as well as particle-matter interactions. As no existing code was found that incorporated all these features, a new simulation software tool has been developed. The tool is based on an interface between a particle tracking engine, pyAT or Xtrack, and a Monte-Carlo particle-matter interaction engine for collimator scattering, BDSIM, which is based on Geant4. Results from a simulation of edge scattering from a beam halo collimator in the FCC-ee are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the tool.

Key4hep, a framework for future HEP experiments and its use in FCC

Abstract:The road map to the FCC Feasibility Study Report, for submission to the next Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, will require detailed simulation and advanced reconstruction algorithms to explore and maximise the physics reach of proposed detector solutions. The optimisation process will require maximal flexibility in changing detector geometries, materials and sensitive areas, and efficient tools to quantify the overall performance. To synergise such developments the CEPC, CLIC, FCC, ILC and SCT communities have engaged in the commissioning of a `Turnkey Software Stack' (Key4hep), which would provide all the necessary ingredients, from simulation to analysis, for future experiments. This approach is based on the positive experience of the linear collider projects ILC and CLIC, which have developed and used a common software stack (iLCSoft) over the last decade. Key4hep aims to cover most, if not all, future linear and circular machines colliding leptons (electrons, muons), and hadrons. The common software ecosystem will facilitate writing specific components for experiments ensuring coherency and maximising the re-use of established solutions. Project-specific software frameworks will require adaptation to fully profit from the common software base. In this essay we present the status and plans for re-framing the FCC software framework, FCCSW, around Key4hep and discuss the challenges associated with the transition.

Abstract:We investigate the physics reach and potential for the study of various decays involving a transition at the Future Circular Collider running electron-positron collisions at the Z -pole (FCC-ee). Signal and background candidates, which involve inclusive Z contributions from , and uds final states, are simulated for a proposed multi-purpose detector. Signal candidates are selected using two Boosted Decision Tree algorithms. We determine expected relative sensitivities of 053%, 120%, 337% and 986% for the branching fractions of the , , and decays, respectively. In addition, we investigate the impact of detector design choices related to particle-identification and vertex resolution. The phenomenological impact of such measurements on the extraction of Standard Model and new physics parameters is also studied.

Abstract:A 100 TeV pp collider is under consideration, by the high-energy physics community, as an important step for the future development of our field, following the completion of the LHC and High-luminosity LHC physics programmes. In particular, CERN is considering 100 TeV pp collisions as the key target of a Future Circular Collider facility, built around a 100 km tunnel and designed to deliver pp, e+e- and ep collisions, in addition to a programme with heavy ion beams and with the injector complex. CERN is coordinating an international study tasked with the completion, by the end of 2018, of a Conceptual Design Report (CDR) for this facility. This document presents the first results of the assessment of the physics potential of the hadronic part of this research programme (FCC-hh).

Abstract:The prospects are presented for precise measurements of the branching ratios of the purely leptonic and decays at the Future Circular Collider (FCC). This work is focused on the hadronic decay in both and processes. Events are selected with two Boosted Decision Tree algorithms to optimise the separation between the two signal processes as well as the generic hadronic Z decay backgrounds. The range of the expected precision for both signals are evaluated in different scenarios of non-ideal background modelling. This paper demonstrates, for the first time, that the decay can be well separated from both and generic processes in the FCC-ee collision environment and proposes the corresponding branching ratio measurement as a novel way to determine the CKM matrix element . The theoretical impacts of both and measurements on New Physics cases are discussed for interpretations in the generic Two-Higgs-doublet model and leptoquark models.

Abstract:One of the major upcoming challenges in particle physics is achieving precise measurements of the Z, W, and H bosons, as well as the top quark. To meet these targets, the next e + e - collider complex, FCC-ee, will need to achieve unprecedented luminosities. The FCC-IS European Study is investigating the feasibility of these challenges, with a cornerstone of the study being the design and optimization of the high-energy booster (HEB). This paper provides an update on the status of the HEB of FCC-ee in light of recent developments in the injector and collider survey, as well as an overview of ongoing work on longitudinal stability and design robustness in relation to field, alignment, and diagnostics errors. Constraints and effects related to the design frequency of the accelerating cavities, as well as collective effects, are also highlighted. Lastly, the paper presents an investigation into an alternative arcs cell design.

Abstract:High energy particle colliders have been in the forefront of particle physics for more than three decades. At present the near term US, European and international strategies of the particle physics community are centered on full exploitation of the physics potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) through its high-luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). A number of next generation collider facilities have been proposed and are currently under consideration for the medium- and far-future of the accelerator-based high energy physics. In this paper we offer a uniform approach to evaluation of various accelerators based on the feasibility of their energy reach, performance reach and cost range. We briefly review such post-LHC options as linear e+e- colliders in Japan (ILC) or at CERN (CLIC), muon collider, and circular lepton or hadron colliders in China (CepC/SppC) and Europe (FCC). We conclude with a look into ultimate energy reach accelerators based on plasmas and crystals, and some perspectives for the far future of accelerator-based particle physics.

Abstract:Since its inception, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has significantly advanced particle physics and will continue to do so in the context of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) program to collect $3000$ fb$^{-1}$ by the end of 2041. The particle physics community worldwide is discussing which future collider could follow in the footsteps of the LHC and uncover yet inaccessible phenomena. To foster the discussion on this important topic among the young particle physicist community, the Early-Career Researchers (ECR) panel of the European Committee for Future Colliders (ECFA) has organized the Future Colliders for Early-Career Researchers workshop at CERN in September 2023. This document aims to summarise this event and present the ECR perspective, outline the key questions that came up during the discussions, and explore how ECRs can influence the decision process of future colliders community and beyond.

Abstract:Bremsstrahlung spectra will be strongly distorted due to small lateral beam sizes at future colliders. That in turn will have large consequences for the electron and positron beam lifetimes as well as for the luminosity measurements in the case of electron-hadron colliders. We discuss in detail such consequences for the Future Circular Collider and Large Hadron electron Collider cases.
