Abstract:This work explores bounds on the Rouquier dimension in the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on Noetherian schemes. By utilizing approximations, we exhibit that Rouquier dimension is inherently characterized by the number of cones required to build all perfect complexes. We use this to prove sharper bounds on Rouquier dimension of singular schemes. Firstly, we show Rouquier dimension doesn't go up along étale extensions and is invariant under étale covers of affine schemes admitting a dualizing complex. Secondly, we demonstrate that the Rouquier dimension of the bounded derived category for a curve, with a delta invariant of at most one at closed points, is no larger than two. Thirdly, we bound the Rouquier dimension for the bounded derived category of a (birational) derived splinter variety by that of a resolution of singularities.

Abstract:Given a dg category $\mathcal C$, we introduce a new class of objects (weakly product bimodules) in $\mathcal C^{op}\otimes \mathcal C$ generalizing product bimodules. We show that the minimal generation time of the diagonal by weakly product bimodules provides an upper bound for the Rouquier dimension of $\mathcal C$. As an application, we give a purely algebro-geometric proof of a result of Burban and Drozd that the Rouquier dimension of the derived category of coherent sheaves on an $n$-cycle of projective lines is one. Our approach explicitly gives the generator realizing the minimal generation time.

Abstract:The small finitistic dimension of a ring is determined as the supremum projective dimensions among modules with finite projective resolutions. This paper seeks to establish that, for a coherent ring R with a finite weak (resp. Gorenstein) global dimension, the small finitistic dimension of R is equal to its weak (resp. Gorenstein) global dimension. Consequently, we conclude some new characterizations for (Gorenstein) von Neumann and semihereditary rings.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce and study the weak Gorenstein global dimension of a ring $R$ with respect to a left $R$-module $C$. We provide several characterizations of when this homological invariant is bounded. Two main applications are given: first, we prove that the weak Gorenstein global dimension of $R$ relative to a semidualizing $(R,S)$-bimodule $C$ can be computed either by the ${\rm G_C}$-flat dimension of the left $R$-modules or right $S$-modules, just like the (absolute) weak global dimension. As a consequence, a new argument for solving Bennis' conjecture is obtained. As a second application, we give a concrete description of the weak equivalences in the ${\rm G_C}$-flat model structure recently found by the authors. In order to prove this result, an interesting connection between abelian model structures and AB-weak contexts is proved. This connection leads to a result that can be applied to obtain abelian model structures with a simpler description of trivial objects.

Abstract:It is well known that the right global dimension of a ring R is usually computed by the right derived functors of Hom and the left projective resolutions of right R -modules. In this paper, for a left coherent and right perfect ring R , we characterize the right global dimension of R , from another point of view, using the left derived functors of Hom and the right projective resolutions of right R -modules. It is shown that rD ( R ) ⩽ n ( n ⩾ 2) if and only if the gl right Proj -dim M R ⩽ n −2 if and only if Ext n −1 ( N,M ) = 0 for all right R -modules N and M if and only if every ( n −2)th Proj cosyzygy of a right R -module has a projective envelope with the unique mapping property. It is also proved that rD ( R ) ⩽ n ( n ⩾ 1) if and only if every ( n −1)th Proj -cosyzygy of a right R -module has an epic projective envelope if and only if every n th Proj -cosyzygy of a right R -module is projective. As corollaries, the right hereditary rings and the rings R with rD ( R ) ⩽ 2 are characterized.

Abstract:We show that Iacob-Iyengar's answer to a question of Avromov-Foxby extends from Noetherian to coherent rings. In particular, a coherent ring R is regular if and only if the injective (resp. projective) dimension of each complex X of R-modules agrees with its graded-injective (resp. graded-projective) dimension. The same is shown for the analogous dimensions based on FP-injective R-modules, and on flat R-modules.

Gorenstein cohomological dimension and stable categories for groups

Abstract:First we study the Gorenstein cohomological dimension ${\rm Gcd}_RG$ of groups $G$ over coefficient rings $R$, under changes of groups and rings; a characterization for finiteness of ${\rm Gcd}_RG$ is given. Some results in literature obtained over the coefficient ring $\mathbb{Z}$ or rings of finite global dimension are generalized to more general cases. Moreover, we establish a model structure on the weakly idempotent complete exact category $\mathcal{F}ib$ consisting of fibrant $RG$-modules, and show that the homotopy category $\mathrm{Ho}(\mathcal{F}ib)$ is triangle equivalent to both the stable category $\underline{\mathcal{C}of}(RG)$ of Benson's cofibrant modules, and the stable module category ${\rm StMod}(RG)$. The relation between cofibrant modules and Gorenstein projective modules is discussed, and we show that under some conditions such that ${\rm Gcd}_RG<\infty$, ${\rm Ho}(\mathcal{F}ib)$ is equivalent to the stable category of Gorenstein projective $RG$-modules, the singularity category, and the homotopy category of totally acyclic complexes of projective $RG$-modules.

Abstract:In this article, we study the weak global dimension of coherent rings in terms of the left FP-injective resolutions of modules. Let R be a left coherent ring and F I the class of all FP-injective left R-modules. It is shown that wD(R) <= n (n >= 1) if and only if every nth F I-syzygy of a left R-module is FP-injective; and wD(R) <= n (n >= 2) if and only if every (n - 2)th F I-syzygy in a minimal F I-resolution of a left R-module has an FP-injective cover with the unique mapping property. Some results for the weak global dimension of commutative coherent rings are also given.

Abstract:We describe reduced representatives for positive Rouquier complexes. These are obtained via Morse theoretical Gaussian elimination from the corresponding standard representatives. Abstract:We compute several types of dimension for the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves of orbifold curves. This completes the calculation of these dimensions for derived categories of noncommutative curves in the sense of Reiten-van den Bergh. Along the way we construct stability conditions for orbifold curves. We also obtain a characterisation of orbifold curves with hereditary tilting bundle in terms of diagonal dimension.

Abstract:This is a survey on the relation between homological properties of the Frobenius endomorphism and finiteness of various homological dimensions of the ring or of modules over it, such as global dimension and projective dimension. We begin with Kunz's surprising result in 1969 that the regularity of a Noetherian local ring is equivalent to the flatness of its Frobenius endomorphism, as well as the subsequent generalizations to the module setting by Peskine and Szpiro and continue up through the recent flurry of results in the last five years. An attempt is made to include proofs whenever feasible.

Abstract:Let R be a commutative ring with identity, and let S be a multiplicative subset of R. Positselski and Slávik introduced the concepts of S-strongly flat modules and S-weakly cotorsion R-modules, and they showed that these concepts are useful in describing flat modules and Enochs cotorsion modules over commutative rings (see the discussion in [13, Section 1.1]). In this paper, we introduce a homological dimension, called the S-strongly flat dimension, for modules and rings. These dimensions measure how far away a module M is from being S-strongly flat and how far a ring R is from being S-almost semisimple. The relations between the S-strongly flat dimension and other dimensions are discussed.
