Abstract:AbstractThe ability to harness charges and spins for control of organic excitonic states is critical in developing high‐performance organic luminophores and optoelectronic devices. Here we report a facile strategy to efficiently manipulate the electronic energy states of various organic phosphors by coupling them with inorganic lanthanide nanocrystals. We show that the metallic atoms exposed on the nanocrystal surface can introduce strong coupling effects to 9‐(4‐ethoxy‐6‐phenyl‐1,3,5‐triazin‐2‐yl)‐9H‐carbazole (OCzT) and some organic chromophores with carbazole functional groups when the organics are approaching the nanocrystals. This unconventional organic–inorganic hybridization enables a nearly 100 % conversion of the singlet excitation to fast charge transfer luminescence that does not exist in pristine organics, which broadens the utility of organic phosphors in hybrid systems.

Abstract:A new luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by introducing the tetracarboxylic acid ligand (H(4)bptc) as a chromophore to sensitize the luminescence of the Tb3+ ion. Interestingly, despite the achiral nature of H(4)bptc, the resulting framework exhibited rare chiral helical channels. The luminescence studies revealed that this material showed a highly selective fluorescence quenching response to Fe3+ ions in liquid suspension, which can be conveniently observed by the naked eye under UV light. Thus, this material can be potentially used as a chemosensor for sensing Fe3+ ions and its selective luminescence quenching response can be explained in terms of the competitive absorption mechanism.

Abstract:It is difficult to assemble multi-component metallo-supramolecular architectures in a non-statistical fashion, which limits their development toward functional materials. Herein, we report a system of interconverting bowls and cages that are able to respond to various selective stimuli (light, ligands, anions), based on the self-assembly of a photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) ligand, La, with PdII cations. By combining the concept of "coordination sphere engineering", relying on bulky quinoline donors, with reversible photoswitching between the ligand's open (o-La) and closed (c-La) forms, a [Pd2(o-La)4] cage (o-C) and a [Pd2(c-La)3] bowl (c-B) were obtained, respectively. This structural rearrangement modulates the system's guest uptake capabilities. Among three bis-sulfonate guests (G1, G2, and G3), the cage can encapsulate only the smallest (G1), while the bowl binds all of them. Bowl c-B was further used to synthesize a series of heteroleptic cages, [Pd2LA3LB], representing a motif never reported before. Additional ligands (Lc-f), with short or long arms, tune the cavity size, thus enabling or preventing guest uptake. Addition of Br–/Ag+ makes it possible to change the overall charge, again triggering guest uptake and release, as well as fourth ligand de-/recomplexation. In combination, site-selective introduction of functionality and application of external stimuli lead to an intricate system of hosts with different guest preferences. A high degree of complexity is achieved through cooperativity between only a few components.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:For a long time, the small group of cationic ligands stood out as obscure systems within the general landscape of coordinative chemistry. However, this situation has started to change rapidly during the last decade, with more and more examples of metal-coordinated cationic species being reported. The growing interest in these systems is not only of purely academic nature, but also driven by accumulating evidence of their high catalytic utility. Overcoming the inherently poor coordinating ability of cationic species often required additional structural stabilization. In numerous cases this was realized by functionalizing them with a pair of chelating side-arms, effectively constructing a pincer-type scaffold. This comprehensive review aims to encompass all cationic ligands possessing such pincer architecture reported to date. Herein every cationic species that has ever been embedded in a pincer framework is described in terms of its electronic structure, followed by an in-depth discussion of its donor/acceptor properties, based on computational studies (DFT) and available experimental data (IR, NMR or CV). We then elaborate on how the positive charge of these ligands affects the spectroscopic and redox properties, as well as the reactivity, of their complexes, compared to those of the structurally related neutral ligands. Among other systems discussed, this review also surveys our own contribution to this field, namely, the introduction of sulfonium-based pincer ligands and their complexes, recently reported by our group.

Abstract:Taking advantage of a basic ligand (BPCH=2,6-bis(4-pyridyl methylidene)cyclohexanone) and three acid ligands (H2TP=terephthalic acid, H2IP=isophthalic acid, H(3)TMA=1, 3, 5 - benzenetricarboxylic acid), seven metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) 1-7 have been achieved by using this acid-base mixed-ligand synthetic strategy. These complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectra, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. Diverse 3D structural characters of MOFs 1-3 or 2D structural characters of MOFs 4-7 have been observed. The fluorescence properties of these complexes have been explored, indicating that they had selectivity towards Fe3+ ions. Several complexes had shown certain performance for adsorbing dye molecules.

Abstract:A novel bis[alkynylplatinum(ii)] terpyridine molecular tweezer with conformationally-rigid spacer has been designed and synthesized, which shows enhanced binding affinity towards the complementary guests when compared to its semi-rigid counterpart. Moreover, a three-component supramolecular recognition system comprised of the molecular tweezer and two electron-rich guests was established. Reversible switching of the host-guest binding preference can be achieved via adding a trace amount of hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) into chloroform. Such a system will be interesting for the future construction of intelligent molecular machines and devices.

Abstract:Host-guest dynamic systems in coordination-driven metallo-organic cages have gained significant attentions since their promising applications in chiral separation, drug delivery, and catalytical fields. To maximize guest-binding affinity, hosts adopting multiple conformations are widely investigated on their structural flexibility for guest accommodation. In this study, a novel metallo-organic cage S with breathing inner cavity and freely twisted side chains was proposed. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses depicted a characteristic "breathing-helical" dynamic system on the semiflexible framework, which led to an unprecedent co-crystallisation of racemic and symmetric conformations via the encapsulation locking of C70 guests. By taking advantages of the high binding affinity, selective extraction of C70 was realized. This research provides new ideas for the modification on the helicities of metallo-organic cages, which could pave a new way for advanced conformational manipulation of supramolecular host systems.

Abstract:We designed and synthesized a semi-rigid bis-tridentate ligand L which could undergo trans-to-cis conformational transition when coordinated onto lanthanum ions through the rotation of the single bond on the central terphenyl bridge. By adjusting the metal/ligand ratio, a single-ligand bridged dinuclear complex La2L3 and an infinitely extending two-dimensional layered metal organic polymer (La2L2)n can be obtained. Through the induction of the chiral auxiliary ligand GR/S, these two achiral assemblies could both be transformed into the chiral mononuclear three-component complex LaLGR/S. In addition, we also realized a linear ee sensing for the auxiliary ligand by the induced circular dichroism.

Abstract:Heterometallic supramolecules, known for their unique synergistic effects, have shown broad applications in photochemistry, host-guest chemistry, and catalysis. However, there are great challenges to precisely construct heterometallic supramolecules rather than statistical mixture, due to the limited metal-ions selectivity of coordination units. Especially, heterometallic architectures precisely encoding with different metal ions usually fail to obtain in one-pot method when only one type of coordinated motif exists due to its poor metal-ion selectivity. Herein, we proposed an effective intramolecular cation-π (ICπ) strategy and successfully constructed the heterometallic supramolecule Zn2Cu4L34 by one-pot self-assembly of tritopic terpyridyl ligand L3 with Zn(II) and Cu(II), following the clear self-assembly mechanism that only thermodynamic dimers ZnL12 and Cu2L22 were constructed with model ligands L1, L2, Zn(II) and Cu(II) with perfect self-sorting and ultra-high metal-selectivity feature. The successful construction of the heterometallic supramolecule Zn2Cu4L34, encoding the definite sequence of metal ions Zn(II) and Cu(II) in one-pot method, will offer a novel approach to precisely construct heterometallic architectures.

Abstract:Coordinatively unsaturated atoms play an important role in structural and electronic tuning, while their effects on surface site tailoring for selective adsorption have not been well explored. We demonstrate a new concept based on elaborate tuning of the chemical states of lattice atoms to control the accessibility of different surface sites. The under-coordinated manganese structure developed herein not only benefits the formation of hydroxylated lateral edge sites for preferential complexation of lead (Pb) ions, but also favors a decrease in the proportions of metal-ion-nonspecific octahedral vacancy sites. On the basis of this strategy, a common core-shell structure was devised to further assemble highly exposed edge sites, achieving high selectivity coefficients (31.2-172.0) for Pb(ii) against various metal cations. Even when these metal cations coexist at higher concentrations, the general specificity is still maintained, with further pH-enabled switchable sorption-desorption for adsorbent recyclability. Different from frequently reported specific ligand-induced selective systems, intrinsic structure modification as described herein will lead to a new paradigm for surface site tailoring that enables a versatile and tunable platform in environmental remediation, resource recovery and analyte sensing.

Abstract:A novel molecular tweezer consisting of 2,2'-iminodibenzoyl backbone and alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine pincers is designed and synthesized. It shows moderate binding strengths towards two neutral organometallic guests, accompanying with interesting optical behaviours due to the involvement of donor-acceptor and metal-metal interactions. Notably, addition of polar solvent, hexafluoroisopropanol, cleavages intramolecular NH...0 hydrogen bonds and thereby triggers conformational change for the molecular tweezer receptor. Consequently, molecular tweezer/guest complexation could be significantly influenced, benefiting for further construction of intelligent molecular machines and devices. Abstract:Ligand-protected metal nanoclusters have drawn increasing research interest because of their unique physicochemical properties and practical applications. Great efforts have been made in pursuing rational synthesis of metal nanoclusters and establishing the structure-property relationships. As an indispensable part of ligand-protected metal nanoclusters, ligands play multiple roles in determining their structures and properties. In this perspective, we demonstrate the importance of ligand engineering in terms of the control of structures, optical and catalytic properties of metal nanoclusters. Furthermore, we will show that ligand engineering is prospective in structural design and preorganization of surface metal sites.

Abstract:Herein a new organoplatinum(ii)-based molecular tweezer has been designed and synthesized, which displays pH-responsive mechanical transformation from the "U"- to "W"-shaped conformation. Pt(ii)Pt(ii) metal-metal interactions have been successfully incorporated into the resulting molecular tweezer/guest recognition motifs and self-assembled polymers, which can be modulated in response to pH variation.

Abstract:Lanthanide (Ln) based mononuclear single-molecule magnets (SMMs) provide probably the finest ligand regulation model for magnetic property. Recently, the development of such SMMs has witnessed a fast transition from coordination to organometallic complexes because the latter provides a fertile, yet not fully excavated soil for the development of SMMs. Especially those SMMs with heterocyclic ligands have shown the potential to reach higher blocking temperature. In this minireview, we give an overview of the design principle of SMMs and highlight those "shining stars" of heterocyclic organolanthanide SMMs based on the ring sizes of ligands, analysing how the electronic structures of those ligands and the stiffness of subsequently formed molecules affect the dynamic magnetism of SMMs. Finally, we envisaged the future development of heterocyclic Ln-SMMs.

Abstract:AbstractCoordination engineering for single‐atom sites has drawn increasing attention, yet its chemical synthesis remains a tough issue, especially for tailorable coordination structures. Herein, a molecular recognition strategy is proposed to fabricate single‐atom sites with regulable local coordination structures. Specifically, a heteroatom‐containing ligand serves as the guest molecule to induce coordination interaction with the metal‐containing host, precisely settling the heteroatoms into the local structure of single‐atom sites. As a proof of concept, thiophene is selected as the guest molecule, and sulfur atoms are successfully introduced into the local coordination structure of iron single‐atom sites. Ultrahigh oxygen reduction electrocatalytic activity is achieved with a half‐wave potential of 0.93 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Furthermore, the strategy possesses excellent universality towards diversified types of single‐atom sites. This work makes breakthroughs in the fabrication of single‐atom sites and affords new opportunities in structural regulation at the atomic level.
Phosphorescent Host–Guest Complexes on the Basis of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane-Functionalized Metallotweezers

Abstract:Phosphorescent host-guest systems have attracted considerable attention because of their intriguing properties and diverse applications. In this study, a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-functionalized gold(III) tweezer receptor has been designed and synthesized. It is capable of sandwiching platinum(II) terpyridine compounds into its cavity with a high noncovalent binding affinity (association constants: ∼105 M-1 in chloroform). The resulting heterometallic host-guest complexes exhibit enhanced phosphorescent emission compared with those of the individual species in chloroform, thanks to the prevention of vibration and rotation upon noncovalent complexation. They can further assemble into nanospheres in chloroform/diethyl ether (1:9, v/v) owing to phase segregation between the metallotweezer/guest motif and the peripheral polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane unit. When terpyridine platinum(II) chloride serves as the complementary guest, the resulting noncovalent system displays an intraligand emission at the individual host-guest complexed state yet excimeric emission at the supramolecular assembled state, yielding the phosphorescent solvatochromic behaviors. Overall, the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-functionalized metallotweezer combines guest encapsulation and supramolecular assembly capabilities, which provides new avenues for color-tunable phosphorescent materials.
